Belgium king to address nation amid reports that he is about to abdicate

"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to your children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female'." Diana Vreeland.

Following the Dutch example perhaps? It may also be related to the political troubles in Belgium and perhaps some feel a new face at the top might be required.

QuoteThe King of the Belgians, Albert II, is going to address the nation amid reports he is going to abdicate.

Belgian state TV reported that the 79-year-old monarch would make an announcement on all of the major networks at 17:00 BST.

His son, Crown Prince Philippe, 53, is next in line to the throne.

During Belgium's political deadlock in 2010-11, the king - who is due to mark 20 years on the throne next month - took on the role of mediator.

King Albert met the Belgian government's cabinet earlier on Wednesday to inform them of his decision, Belgian state TV reported.

Following the king's announcement, Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo will address the nation.

But would they want that new face to be Phillippe?

I thought he was generally detested?

My friend in Belgium tells me the Monarchy is not very popular at present due to the several scandals it has faced recently. Also, it is not very popular given the political instability that the several separatist movement have been causing.

Windsor

It is official: The King of The Belgians will abdicate.

Blue Clover

This is the big royal news of the day! I think it will be  a good move for the Belgian Monarchy!

Limabeany

Yes! The complete opposite of the UK Monarchy situation, in the UK people desperately want the Queen to live forever so the Monarchy doesn't go the the not-so-new blood but in Belgium, new blood is most certainly welcome and a fresh start needed.  :coy:

Windsor

I am quite sad to see him abdicate, but understand the reasons. I hope The Duke and Duchess of Brabant are able to do a good job and bring a sense of stability back into Belgium.

Albert's abdication speech is available on YouTube:

Le roi Albert 2 abdique -Belgium's King Albert 2 abdication -België Koning Albert 2 troonsafst - YouTube

According to Wikipedia, Princess Elisabeth will be known as the Duchess of Brabant when her father becomes the new King of Belgium (fourth chapter):

Koala

The King will remain King...just styled differently.

Instead of The King of the Belgians...he will be King Albert II of Belgium.  That's what happened with his father.

Beatrix however went from queen to princess.  Interesting.

Blue Clover

^^^True, about Beatrix, she didn't have to take such a step down.

Koala

Wilhelmina and Juliana became princesses too after their abdications.  That's just how it goes.  Not sure why, might be some constitutional thing.

Interesting fact: Wilhelmina was the 4th child of the King --her 3 elder brothers were all named Wilhelm Something. Like the current incumbent, I guess.

Back then life was more capricious --- now medicine has made it better.
