Queen Elizabeth was under a canopy during her Coronation, but the comment made yesterday that she allowed or the Church allowed, the BBC TV cameras (or photographers of any kind for magazines and newspapers, who were not in fact allowed in the Abbey) to televise or make any film of the actual anointing of the holy oils, is completely incorrect.

Neither she nor Charles nor any of the former monarchs stretching back a thousand years have ever been seen by the congregations at the Abbey or anywhere else while the anointing takes place. There has always been a canopy or shield of some kind hiding them for the anointing. It is the most sacred and private part of the ceremony, is recognised as such and that is the reason.

So Lionel Richie, Take That and Katy Perry will be headlining this much spruiked Coronation Concert? Wow, how cutting edge! Richie alone must be older than Prince Charles!

And well over 60% of Britons have no interest in watching the Coronation according to YouGov. Rather surprising isn?t it for a population that thfe tabloids are always insisting absolutely adore their RF? Plus the US audience may well stream later but for many parts of the country it will be the middle of the night, so no joy there, then.

Gee this Coronation appears to be firming up as a bit of a damp squib rather than an explosion of excitement and sheer joy. Still, tourists will enjoy it and turn out on the streets, so, with some skilled camera angles the BBC will be able to make it look as if the whole country is out there, I?m sure.

I do recall similar projections from polling companies regarding the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremonies. And yes I agree that while many Britons seemed to be inclined to initially say "No, I won't watch it," in the end they did tune in and they enjoyed one of the most spectacular and storied Opening Ceremonies in Olympic History.

Will it happen again for the Coronation? We'll have to wait and see. :happy:

The 700 yards referred to in that headline is Frogmore Cottage, which is where it is presumed Harry will be staying during the Coronation trip. It is about 700 yards from Adelaide Cottage, where the Wales?s live. Both residences are in Windsor Park. That?s what the article is discussing.

That has nothing to do with where Harry will be sitting in WA. He?s the King?s son, of only two siblings, and in terms of precedence he now outranks his paternal uncles, aunt and all his cousins, so it will be interesting to see where he will sit. But it won?t be with the Yorks!

Up until the early 19th century rings presented to the newly enthroned monarchs at their Coronations were regarded by them from then on as their personal possessions. It?s not known why William IV decided to have a permanent one made for his Coronation in 1831. Especially considering he was adamant that the ceremony be held as cheaply as possible, and his brother King George IV?s ring was presumably available. Didn?t like it, too gaudy, who knows?

Anyway, apart from adjustments for size, the ring used has been the same since 1831. I do remember reading that Queen Victoria had exceptionally small fingers and therefore the ring was adjusted accordingly, but the stupid and elderly Archbishop of Canterbury insisted on pushing it on to the wrong finger during the ceremony, with the result that when the poor Queen tried to remove it after the festivities it was jammed on. She and her Ladies had to ice her finger in the end and managed to get it off, which must have been a relief.

Few Coronation rings prior to 1831 survive. Below is the one made for King Charles II in 1660, which was among the other Crown regalia that had to be replaced after the Interregnum when most of it was sold off.

Most Britons not really very interested in the forthcoming Coronation. YouGov poll taken this month. The proportion of interest goes down quite substantially with young Britons but even over 60s aren?t that enthused. At the big royal forum one poster had been on a cruise that had quite a few British passengers from the 60 to over 70 years demographic and she was surprised to hear remarks from them like ?Well if Charles wants a coronation he should pay for it himself? and ?Why should we be bothered??

^Seems to be pretty on-trend with how things always are with the RF. Most people don?t really care about them one way or another. Most people have their own lives to worry about with everything going on. Yet still, almost half say they?ll likely watch it anyway.

That?s why these polls are a bit difficult to read in terms of what people actually feel/want. They seem to take one question at a time without putting thought to the whole.
