Congratulations to the little family on their newest member!

A new royal baby in Luxembourg ? Royal Central

QuoteThe Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg have welcomed their second child.

Princess Stephanie gave birth to a baby boy on March 27th 2023 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. Her younger son arrived at 10.04am, local time.

Both Stephanie and her new son are doing well.

The little prince has been named Francois Henri Luis Marie Guillaume.

He is currently third in line to the throne behind his father, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, and his older brother, Prince Charles.

Prince Francois weighed 3.5 kilos at birth and measured 53 centimetres.

In a short statement announcing his arrival, the Grand Ducal Court said the baby prince?s parents and his big brother were excited to show little Francois off as soon as possible.

So exciting. Had been kind of hoping for a little girl, but a second son and little brother for Charles is exciting  :flower3: :bday10:

I can't wait for photos and to see this family of four. This couple just glows with Charles, I can't wait to see them with Francois.

Another boy to play with for his brother. I wonder how the two year old Charles will react on seeing Francois? He has probably been prepared for the new baby by his parents but if there?s a video in a few weeks it will be interesting and lovely to see the interactions.

Congratulations to Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie!

I hadn't realized that Luxembourg had changed its succession laws in 2011 to allow for absolute primogeniture.

The line of succession to the Luxembourgish throne ? Royal Central

QuoteLuxembourg?s line of succession is governed by absolute primogeniture from Grand Duke Henri?s descendants. This change took effect in 2011 ? before that, females couldn?t inherit the throne.

At that time, Grand Duke Henri issued a decree allowing female legitimate descendants of his to inherit the throne, depending on their order of birth. If a sister is born before a younger brother (as was in the case of Princess Amalia and Prince Liam), the Princess ranks ahead of her brother in the line of succession.

The current line of succession to inherit the Luxembourgish throne is as follows:

    Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume
    Prince Charles
    Prince Francois
    Prince Felix
    Princess Amalia
    Prince Liam
    Princess Alexandra
    Prince Sebastien
    Prince Guillaume
    Prince Paul Louis
    Prince Leopold
    Prince Jean Andre
    Prince Robert
    Prince Alexandre
    Prince Frederik

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa?s son, Prince Louis, renounced his and his descendants? rights to the throne upon his marriage to Tessy Antony in 2006.

In 1891 a tradition arose that certain roses were named after members of the Grand Ducal Family. A rose was named for Prince Charles in 2020.
It will be interesting to see the rose that will be named after Prince Francois.

It?s good that GD Henri made the change though I suppose in reality the Luxembourg RF don?t suffer from a scarcity of sons especially with the latest edition! It will probably be a quarter of a century or more before Charles has any progeny.
I wonder what Felix feels about it all? Relief, happiness, a bit of disappointment that after many years his brother, the heir, had a child, and now he?s fourth in the succession. A little bit of everything, perhaps. But that?s the way it goes with royal families.

Outside of Sweden, changing primogeniture not really a matter of concern for lack of male heirs. Its more a modernising the monarchy move.

Not shocking the Lux royals joined the ranks of most of the European monarchies in changing an outdated law. Liechtenstein is the only current royal house (not former still using title) that doesn't at least have male-preference (in Europe).

What is surprising, is that they did it retroactively, something only Belgium has done before them. Sweden confuses people as Victoria bumped Carl Philip. But in reality like the UK, in Sweden the change was simply dated to the start of the law change. Which was prior to Victoria's birth. Belgium on the other hand changed the law in 1991 where it applied to the children of Albert. At that point a 28 year old Laurent who had been third in line behind his father and older brother, was bumped to 7th behind Astrid and her three children at the time.

In both Luxembourg and Belgian cases though it made little issue to do retroactively. Sebastian was even less likely to come to the the throne then Laurent was, when he got displaced a step by Alexandra.

As for Felix being disappointed, unless he has some Scar tendencies, I doubt there was much disappointment. When you are the second child, you grow up with the thought your older sibling is going to have kids and displace you as heir. Always exceptions like in Belgium, but its not something most people would count on. Likely happy there was no need for him to give up his private life, or for his kids to.

QuoteAiko will not be able to ascend to the throne because the 1947 Imperial Household Law dictates that no woman can become a monarch

QuoteThe Kōshitsu tenpan 皇室典範 (or imperial household law) only allows men to ascend to the throne. But this law prohibiting female emperors dates back only to the Meiji period in 1889 when Japan had reopened to the West and modelled its new government on Prussia, which had banned emperors of female descent

QuoteBecause according to Article 1 of the Imperial Household Law, the Imperial throne of Japan is succeeded to by male descendants in the male line of Imperial Lineage. Because current Japanese law does not make provision for an Empress.

Don?t you remember Japan very strict laws but male must have emperor not empress im not surprised no female have empress in 1889 for 134 years im respect japan laws for japan royal family succession

Danish royals do not reveal a new baby's name until the child's christening ceremony.
At least we were able to learn Prince Francois' name on the day he was born.

With the Danes it has nothing to do with the queen's approval, Perhaps you are thinking the UK.

The Danes they are following an old church ritual/superstition. Used to be tradition that you never mentioned the baby's name before right before they are baptised in the church. Not even in private. The royal family holds to his old tradition even now. Other royal families like the Brits announce when they have chosen a name and feel like sharing it.

But back to Francois we have some sweet photos of the new prince
