QuoteThe Berlin Airlift Memorial honours the Allied forces who flew provisions into Germany during the Berlin blockade imposed by the Soviet Union in 1948. The Prince of Wales lays a commemorative wreath at the foot of the memorial.

"Lest we forget" the actions of the Allies who flew these round the clock missions to aid the people of West Berlin who were in danger of being starved into submission by the Soviet forces. Pleased that there is a memorial to honor the actions of the pilots who kept the population alive.

Over time I believe that too many have forgotten or have never been told that food shortage was a real problem for people in Europe (including the UK) and Asia in the months and years following the aftermath of WWII. My late mother-in-law was born two years before the war ended but recalls the shortages she and her family faced in the southwestern part of the country that was under American control

Princess Cassandra

It is so sweet that they called him Opa!  And indeed he is really settling into grandparenthood.

Blue Clover

That's really sweet! Grandpa Charles!  :teehee:

Charles' speech this evening at the Ambassador's residence. He opened with a greeting in German. He also reflects upon his first visit to Berlin in 1972 when the nation was still divided into the German Democratic Republic (East) and the Federal Republic of German (West).

Yes, there has certainly been a lot of water under the bridge for Germany (as well as for Charles) since 1972. The fall of the Soviet Union and subsequently in East Germany, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, the union between East and West and reunification of Germany. They have all been wonderful for Germans, and it was good for Charles's speech to reflect these historic moments.

Camilla gets a glimpse of Baby Sussex?s photocall ? Royal Central

QuoteIt may not be the first time she?s seen a photo of him but thanks to the speed of modern technology, the Duchess of Cornwall got a glimpse of Baby Sussex?s first photo call within moments of it taking place. As Camilla went on a walkabout in Leipzig, during her tour of Germany, she was shown her step-grandson?s sleeping media debut ? on someone?s mobile phone.

The duchess seemed pleased to share this special moment and said ?thank you for showing me?. Her response ended up in the UK before she knew it as it was shared by the Daily Telegraph?s Hannah Furness.

Overseas #RoyalBaby update: During a walkabout in Leipzig city centre, the Duchess of Cornwall was shown a photograph of her new step-grandson for the first time.
Looking at the picture on a mobile phone, Camilla smiled and said: "Thank you for showing this to me."

A member of the public shared a photo of Baby Archie to Camilla where she and Charles are on tour. The couple were in Leipzig when someone showed Camilla the photo.

Yes, it was a beautiful speech and the message is meaningful and sincere.

Camilla grabbing the limelight over the baby makes me even more sad that Diana is not around to see her newest grandson. I hope Harry and MEghan continue to talk up Diana. Really saddens me to see Camilla grabbing the teddy bear and grinning.

Yes it was and I'm glad that he referenced his family's connection to Germany via Prince Albert.

QuoteSt Nicholas Church in Leipzig is the city?s oldest and largest church and is known as being a key location in the events of the ?Peaceful Revolution?, the events which led to the division of Germany in 1989 and German Unification a year later.

How very kind of the public to gift the newest member of the BRF. Hope that the couple have extra space to bring back the gifts including one very large teddy bear!

Sometimes royals donate the extra gifts to charity. I wonder if this will be the case for gifts for Archie.

Curryong

Hope that Charles and Camilla are enjoying this interesting trip. It looks as if Archie will be well supplied with teddy bears, anyway!

It looks like an interesting trip and let's hope that some good comes from it in appreciable returns for both governments. It's hard to know exactly what such soft diplomacy achieves but Govts keep sending royals on these trips so there must be some value.

Both ladies' dresses are drop dead gorgeous, and the picture of the four of them is very nice.  I know I've seen that necklace before...I think it belonged to the Queen Mother and is versatile - it has up to five strands. If it is the one I am thinking of, I think this smaller version is great with the dress.

sandy

Camilla's dress would have been better in a solid color.  I don't think it is that great, it looks too Night Gown like.
