QuoteA new three-volume fish encyclopedia has nineteen authors, but one name stands out above the others: the Emperor of Japan.

Emperor Akihito contributed 350 pages (and several illustrations) on Gobioidei, a suborder of Japanese goby fish that includes 518 types, to the third edition of "Fishes of Japan with Pictorial Keys to the Species."

Emperor Akihito contributed 350 pages (and several illustrations) on Gobioidei, a suborder of Japanese goby fish that includes 518 types, to the third edition of "Fishes of Japan with Pictorial Keys to the Species." Goby fish, a family that includes the mudskipper, are a particular specialty of the emperor; he has published a number of scientific papers on them (he has also written about the history of science in Japan).

QuoteCrown Princess Masako met on Wednesday afternoon with her father, Hisashi Owada, a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and mother, Yumiko.

Owada told reporters he and his wife talked over tea with their daughter and Crown Prince Naruhito at the royal couple's hotel. He said they seemed to be relieved after attending the coronation of the new Dutch king on Tuesday, while expressing gratitude to the Netherlands for the invitation.

The Crown Princess is on her first official overseas trip in 11 years after struggling with a stress-induced illness. Owada became a judge at the court in 2003 after serving as the top bureaucrat in the Foreign Ministry.

QuoteEmperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will hand over public duties of visiting kindergartens and nursing homes to their children after both of them turn 80, according to the Imperial Household Agency.

The couple expressed a wish to pass on the duties, the agency said Monday, quoting them as saying interacting with children and encouraging the elderly would be more suitable for the younger generation — Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako and Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko.

The Emperor turns 80 in December and the Empress hits the milestone in October 2014. The couple have made annual visits to a kindergarten on Children's Day in May and a home for the elderly on Respect for the Aged Day in September. Next year's visits will be their last.

QuoteCrown Prince Naruhito says his wife, Crown Princess Masako, feels better about her health since making her first official overseas trip in more than a decade.

The Crown Princess, 49, developed a stress-induced illness soon after giving birth to the couple's only daughter, Princess Aiko, now 11.

The couple visited the Netherlands from April 28 to May 3 to attend King Willem-Alexander's coronation, their first official foreign trip together since a 2002 visit to New Zealand and Australia.

The Crown Prince said Thursday that Princess Masako's symptoms have had ups and downs over the past decade, but that she seems more confident about her health since the visit and hopes to slowly expand her official activities.

QuoteJapan Prince Marks 400-year History with Spain

Crown Prince Naruhito launches Monday a celebration of Japan's 400-year relationship with Spain on a visit that will take him to a curious town where many residents still carry the name "Japon" to honour the Japanese who visited in the 17th century.

Naruhito, the 53-year-old son and heir of Emperor Akihito, begins a week-long visit with formal niceties including a meeting with the Spanish royal family and the opening of a Japan-Spain business cooperation council.

But the prince will leave Madrid on Thursday to tour other cities and to visit the small town of Coria del Rio, population about 30,000, not far from the Andalusian capital of Seville in southern Spain.

QuoteThe Imperial Household Agency said Monday it has reduced the number of households in the Imperial family by one, following the passing of Prince Tomohito of Mikasa a year ago.

The household led by the late prince has been integrated into the one led by his father, Prince Mikasa, 97, the late Emperor Hirohito's brother. The step was applied retroactively from June 6 last year, the day of the prince's demise.

As a result, the number of households in the Imperial family dropped to five, excluding those led by Emperor Akihito and Crown Prince Naruhito. The five are the households of Prince Akishino, the Emperor's second son; Prince Hitachi, the Emperor's younger brother; Prince Mikasa; Prince Katsura, a son of Mikasa; and the late Prince Takamado, Prince Tomohito's younger brother.

At a gathering Monday at the Madrid residence of Japan’s ambassador to Spain, the Crown Prince asked Sotoo, 59, how the more than century-old project has been progressing recently.

“Since I am doing my best, I would be glad if you could come over” for a personal inspection, Sotoo replied.

QuoteJapan's Crown Prince Naruhito on Friday honoured a 17th-century samurai who established the first ties between his country and Spain 400 years ago, in a small town where to this day hundreds of local Spaniards bear the name "Japon".

Naruhito, the 53-year-old son and heir of Emperor Akihito, planted a cherry tree next to a statue where the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga stands immortalised, sword on hip, in a bronze statue overlooking the green water of the Guadalquivir River.

Seventeenth-century Coria was a key stopping point for merchant ships from around the world heading to nearby Seville, a hub of the mighty Spanish empire.
