Prince William has announced Blue Peter will launch a new competition for children, with a chance to be recognised at the Earthshot Prize. Founded in 2020 by the prince, The Earthshot Prize recognises those who have helped face environmental challenges around the world.

Blue Peter is the longest-running children's TV programme in the world. Prince William hopes that the new competition with the show will identify "the next generation of young inventors who can make a change".

Children aged 5-15 will be invited to submit an original idea aimed at achieving one of the five 'Earthshots': Fix our Climate, Protect and Restore Nature, Clean our Air, Revive our Oceans and Build a Waste-free World.

This year Prince William attended the Earthshot Prize alone, following Princess Kate's cancer diagnosis. In previous years the Royal couple have attended Earthshot Prize events together.

Each year a broad spectrum of celebrities and environmental champions walk the 'green carpet' to attend the prize ceremony.

The Prince of Wales fitted a car with an eco-tyre made by one of the finalists from his Earthshot Prize and was dubbed a "professional" for his efforts. William got to grips with the 17-inch alloy wheel fitted with a tyre made by ENSO, a start-up shortlisted last year in the Clean Our Air category of William's global environmental competition. The company has announced a three-year partnership with Uber, and thousands of drivers in the UK and US will be offered access to ENSO tyres.

As Earthshot Week kicks off in Cape Town today, The Earthshot Prize has today announced a series of programmes designed to inspire and engage the next generation of climate innovators: the Global Climate Accelerator Network, the Climate Youth Leadership Programme, and Project Slingshot, which will launch in partnership with National Geographic.

These new programmes will, for the first time, ensure that The Earthshot Prize reaches children and young people from the age of five well into adulthood and inspire the next generation to join the movement fixing the planet, one breakthrough solution at a time.
