The State Opening of Parliament is 11th May, so this may possibly be a first for TRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

@TLLK Can discussions in all other boards and threads that have nothing to do with the DoE be discussed, speculated, commented or not during these next 2 weeks of morning?

Curryong

Why would the Cambridges turn up to the State Opening of Parliament while the Queen is still alive and reasonably able? For years she was only accompanied by her husband Prince Philip. Later on Charles did accompany her with Diana, later occasionally, not always. By himself usually, then with Camilla.

However the accompanying is done by the heir to the Throne and his wife if there?s any accompanying to be done. I never saw Andrew (who was the next heir in line before William?s birth and still close to the Throne after it) going to a State opening of Parliament with the Queen, with or without Fergie.

Nor did George of York ever accompany Queen Victoria to the State Openings, on the admittedly rare occasions she bestirred herself to go, and after Prince Eddy?s death he was in exactly the same position as William is in now, next in line. Victoria?s speeches were almost always read out for her anyway, by the Lord Chancellor and others.

@wannable-Saw that you read my response in the Oprah Winfrey thread.

Hmmm would be very surprised to see the Cambridges at the State Opening of Parliament, but QEII might feel that it's time for the couple to take part in preparing for their future roles.

Charles and Anne accompanied their parents to the SOoP in 1967, but I don't believe that Anne has been there again.

State Opening of Parliament, 1967 | The Royal Watcher

In other European monarchies, sometimes you'll see a larger royal party at their respective SOoP: The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark but typically it always has the monarch/consort, adult heir/spouse, in attendance. AFAIK the UK and the Netherlands are the only monarchies that have the monarch read a speech from the throne.
