At least that?s an improvement on the decades after WW2 when the Old Guard were in power and the subject of Japan?s behaviour towards China in the 1930s and atrocities towards POWs (including Aussies btw) by the Japanese army was scarcely mentioned. Today?s younger generation of Japanese know better.

The Emperor's family will stay at the Imperial Palace (Kyuden) while their personal belongings are moved from Akasaka Imperial residence to the Imperial residence, September 6-15. The Kyuden is normally used for ceremonies & events, not for living accommodations.

The Imperial Household Agency initially planned for the Emperor's family to stay at Nasu Imperial Villa in Tochigi Prefecture during the 10-day move. However, Emperor Naruhito expressed concerns, intending to limit travel during the pandemic.

It's the first time in 50 years the Kyuden will be used as living accommodations. Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun stayed at the Kyuden overnight as rehearsal before visiting Europe in 1971.
