Thank you PoP for the news. I have a soft spot for the submarine units as my uncle was a sub captain in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at the Holy Loch base in Scotland in the early to mid 1980's.

PrincessOfPeace

You're welcome TLLK. I forgot to mention the Duke of Cambridge in addition to being Commodore in Chief is Royal Patron of the HMS Alliance Conservation Appeal.

Submarine HMS Alliance looks a little different today to how she was when the Duke of Cambridge last saw her.

Prince William came to Gosport in 2008 to open a memorial to thousands of lost submariners at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Haslar.

Now he's coming back to see the fruits of a multi-million pound conservation project which has restored the ship to the way she was.

The Duke of Cambridge will attend the rededication ceremony today of the only surviving British Second World War-era submarine.

In his role as Commodore-in-Chief Submarines, William will visit HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, which has been restored at a cost of £7 million.

The Prince is the royal patron of the conservation appeal which made the repairs and refurbishment of the submarine, which re-opened to the public last month, possible.

QuoteIT was down the hatch for Prince William today as he glugged back a huge tot of rum in the line of duty and became an honorary submariner.

The Duke of Cambridge  had a big smile on his face after downing in one the tumbler of Pusser's Navy Rum before being presented with his dolphins submariner's insignia.

William, 31, was spared the usual ordeal, however, of having to pick up the dolphins in his teeth from the bottom of the glass after downing the tot.

Instead, he was presented with the insignia afterwards. "We're not going to choke you today," smiled Vice Admiral Sir Tim McClement, chairman of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum.

He was given an officer's measure, with no water.

QuotePrince William swigged a generous shot of rum today as he celebrated the £7m restoration of a WWII submarine.

The prince downed the neat shot of 55 per cent proof liquor and was presented with a 'Dolphin' insignia as he became an honorary submariner following a rededication ceremony to HMS Alliance in Gosport, Hampshire.

'Where's everyone else's rum?' William joked as he took the glass of Pusser's Navy Rum from Chairman of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum Vice Admiral Sir Tim McClement and necked it in one.

Thank you for the photos and videos of this engagement. The restored sub is a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives during the war.

His Royal Highness arrived by Lynx helicopter and was greeted by the cheers of local schoolchildren waving Union flags.

He then attended a service led by Royal Navy chaplain Reverend Ernie Grimshaw to rededicate the submarine, as well as to remember two Australian First World War-era submarines, one of which, AE1, sank in 1914 off Papua New Guinea and the other, AE2, was scuttled off Turkey and the crew seized.
