how did you get asked to be a mod ? is it because you guys have been on the forum for the longest?

Somewhat, yes. We look at many things. Length of membership, diversity of opinion (across the whole team), and of course, ability to moderate oneself ;) We can't have a mod who doesn't follow the rules! And since we are a team, selections are usually voted on among the whole team since teams work better when all members get along. It's not a popularity contest, but cohesion is important.
