When Prince William finally gets round to proposing to Kate Middleton, she may not be able to look forward to having a poem composed in her honour. Mandrake can disclose that the Government is considering dropping the requirement for the new poet laureate to compose verse for the Royal family.

that would be a shame.  the current Laureate isn't that great i admit....maybe that has something to do with it?  but it would be a shame to do away with it completely.  it's a remarkable tradition that gives statue to a literary form that is too often overlooked.

He says there are some aspects of the job that he will not miss. "My heart won't stop every time the Evening Standard says William and Kate are getting married. They better not get engaged in the next two months."
