Not since 1999 would be 23 years broken tradition but must require with parents sit in royal boxes
QuoteThe eight-year-old's presence in the royal box was a rare sight, however, as usually children are not invited to sit there. In fact, only royal children are allowed to do so.
Unless they are members of the royal family, youngsters are not allowed to sit in the royal box under any circumstances ? a rule that has reportedly ruffled feathers in the past.
back in 1999, it was reported that the Duchess of Kent, a keen tennis fan herself, was upset after she asked the All England Club if she could invite a young guest to sit with her at Wimbledon.
The 12-year-old boy was the son of the Duchess' late friend, and she hope to offer him some royal hospitality as a heartfelt gesture.
However, while seats outside the royal box were offered to the pair, her request was turned down in order to uphold the traditions of the world-famous tennis tournament.
A statement released by then-club chairman John Curry at the time apologised to the Duchess but stood firm on Wimbledon's rules.
It read: "I regret any unintentional hurt this may have caused to her Royal Highness. Because of demand for space in the royal box, we also ask that, apart from children of the royal family, children are not invited as they exclude other worthy people from attending, many of whom contribute to tennis".

Rugby League World Cup: Princess of Wales to attend England double-header - BBC Sport (https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-league/63459711)
QuoteThe Princess of Wales is to attend England's World Cup double-header at Wigan on Saturday.
The women's team's group match is against Canada at 12:00 GMT, followed by the men's quarter-final against Papua New Guinea at 14:30.
Catherine will arrive for the men's game and meet the women at half-time.
RFL chair Simon Johnson said: "We will be delighted and honoured to welcome the Princess of Wales for the first time as royal patron."
Catherine took over as royal patron of the RFL from Prince Harry in February, and this will be her first official engagement.
She was given the royal patronage by the late Queen Elizabeth II and also took the role as patron of the Rugby Football Union.
Would be lovely if Princess Charlotte attended the match with her mum.

Unless the Lions make it to the World Cup finals, Prince William will not be present at any of the matches in Qatar due to concerns over the host nation's human rights record. I believe that Belgium's King Phillipe is also choosing to remain at home unless that team makes it to the final round. Other nations are also being very vocal about boycotting the World Cup 2022.

Yes Prince William and King Phillipe cant attend to Qatar due human rights records but European royals and UK royals will stay home to watch the World Cup no matter who will grab gold bring home to UK
Charles, the BRF and the increasing role of the Qatar royals into London life. Qatar and their royal family have been friendly with the BRF for years in fact since the 19th century when Qatar was a British protectorate. This thing with the World Cup and the British royals retreating fast for PR reasons always makes me laugh.
If Qatar?s human rights record is so bad, and it certainly is and has been for decades, then surely the right thing for the present King to have done was not to have accepted the one million donation from Qatar in the first place when it was offered to him when POW, whether in Fortnam bags or not, but of course he did. And Charles couldn?t plead ignorance about it as he?s visited the country more than most Britons. Hypocrisy writ large I?d say!

Yes there are definitely stories circulating about her becoming the President. Which would now see Wales having either the Prince or Princess of Wales as the President/Patron of one of the major team sports. It might be Time to get those "House Divided" banners.

It seems that AELTC will be lifting the ban on players from Russia and Belarus in the coming weeks prior to the Wimbledon tournament.
The PssoW will be handing out the trophies to any player who wins at the tournament.
QuoteThe Princess of Wales intends to continue with the tradition of presenting the Wimbledon singles trophies this year regardless of whether the champions are from Russia or Belarus.
Despite concerns over a high-profile member of the royal family handing over the silverware during the invasion of Ukraine by military forces from Russia and Belarus, sources have said that the princess plans to fulfil her duties as the All England Club?s patron.
Wimbledon organisers are expected to lift the ban on entrants from Russia and Belarus in the next two weeks. Players from both nations will be permitted to compete as neutral competitors, with no mention of where they hail from beside their names on scoreboards and television graphics.
The All England Club has kept Kensington Palace updated during the long decision-making process. While there were initial concerns among some club officials about the propaganda that could potentially be derived from the princess standing on Centre Court alongside a champion from Russia or Belarus, there has been no indication from the palace that the princess will not attend the women?s singles final on July 15 and the men?s singles final on July 16.

Good. That ban was absolutely ridiculous anyway. As if sportspersons from Russia or Belarus could have any possible influence on the foreign or domestic policies of their governments!

^Love it.

The stadium is packed
Well, the stadium would hardly be packed because of William being there! It?s the FA Cup Final for God?s sake! Man United is one of the most popular teams in Britain in terms of fans (and has been for about a hundred years), and this is between two Manchester teams whose fans are fiercely loyal (again traditionally) so it?s a bit of a grudge match of fierce rivalry as well. People from Manchester probably rushed to buy tickets and be there, and the FA Cup Final at Wembley is packed every year anyway, especially when well known teams are playing.
^Did wannable say it?s because William was there? Must have missed that in her post. William is also there because it?s the final, not just a random excursion; he?s the president of the organization.
I realise he?s the President. Several royals are Presidents/patrons of various British sports. And Wembley would be packed for the FA Cup if Sooty the glove puppet was handing out the medals and Cup.
I?m unsure who you think is arguing against that fact? It?s a football match. I don?t think he showed up thinking everyone was there to see him.

There was an incredibly moving moment earlier when the princess was given a pair of earrings by club coach Sarah Renton made in memory of her daughter, Issy, 17, who sadly took her own life on May 29. Kate hugged her fiercely.
I know all of us there were utterly lost in admiration for Sarah's bravery in attending just days after the loss of her brilliant daughter. But she was keen to meet those involved in the mental health charity Brave Mind and thank the princess for her campaigning on the issue.

POLL: Should Prince William attend the World Cup final? | Royal | News | Express.co.uk (https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1803150/prince-william-england-world-cup-final-poll)
William has received some criticism for not coming to see the World Cup final in Sydney.
Should Prince William attend the World Cup final to cheer on the Lionesses?
Yes 57%
No 40%
Don't know 3%
^ What I've read in social media and mainstream media, the biggest contention is that IF it were the mens final, he'd go.
The mens final was pre pandemic, the economy worldwide was stable, his multiple football trips were OK. Not today post pandemic, unstable economy (and politics), including the fact that Australia has decided not to do the Commonwealth games just like that wiping out 'commitment they had previously established' and other political issues preferably discussed in the commonwealth thread.
If he stays or goes, he will be criticized anyway.
I'm surprised with the above poll though, a 17 point difference with Yes go to No go is huge.
A Lionesses with their nuclear family - however it is 'comprised', their partner - whichever gender, a lunch or dinner, whichever they or is choose/chosen at the palace/castle to be yet known, effective sooner rather than later, including important people in the government and the football world.
The expense is probably the same - the BRF know how to use their own produce, the security is already in place, the expense would be operational.
I predict Windsor Castle.
It's good to see Prince William and George together.

England are playing in the Women?s World Cup final in Australia this Sunday. Do you think Prince William, who is the president of the Football (https://yougov.co.uk/topics/sport/survey-results/daily/2023/08/18/ea88d/1)
England are playing in the Women?s World Cup final in Australia this Sunday. Do you think Prince William, who is the president of the Football Association (FA), should or should not be expected to attend the match?
52% Should be expected to attend
25% Should not be expected to attend
24% Don't know
The responses are consistent across region, gender, politics, and social grade. There is some variation by age, with older adults being more closely divided, but in all age groups, those who say he should be expected to attend outnumber those who say he should not be expected to attend. (Adults 65+ think he should be expected to attend by 44% to 33%, while adults 18-24 agree by 60% to 20%.)
IF it were 70% or more, landslide, go, the other 2 minorities of no and don't know would be proportioned in other ways. He'd probably have to stay a few days and add on events in Australia to make it up.
50ish is yes above half, but not enough to treat the rest of the minorities, which aren't so minority with no care or badly ''proportioned''.
None is above 60%.

You stated in an earlier newspaper poll you yourself linked, that you were ?surprised? at the 17% difference in the people who said he should go to Sydney with those who didn?t want him to. You said it was ?huge?. Now it?s a properly weighted poll from a reputable agency like YouGov the 25% difference somehow isn?t good enough! What! And the 25% ?don?t knows? don't consist solely of people who don?t want him to go. It would probably be more like an even split or near to, if they were asked the question again.
I did state the 17 point difference is huge 57/40. That's it, I didn't add what I just added lately. You could have asked then, but your asking now, this is my reply.

The truth is that most people in the UK in both these polls believe that William should go to Sydney. And he?s received considerable backlash for not doing so in several UK newspapers and news outlets.
It?s equally true iMO that he and his advisers badly misread the room on that issue. He thought that being holier than thou about carbon footprints would allow him to enjoy his Norfolk holidays in peace, without a long trip to Sydney and back.
Well he?s been proven wrong, and he?s been shown up by Queen Leti and Infanta Sofia representing their country with an appearance at the Cup final. Not just sending feel good messages most of which which are done online by assistants, but actually putting themselves out by being there, and good on them!

Oh well then, he shouldn?t have gone to Sydney to support his nation?s female soccer team (even though he is President of the FA) because the Lionesses aren?t trending on social media! Really! Lol. His critics in the British media in the last few days obviously don?t agree!
Social media is a reality, its technology will only get better and better. Matter of fact there is ''new'' tech already in X (twitter) that started yesterday.
Each to it's own beliefs. Pre pandemic, I personally would want him to go. Now, No, only if he stays a week and adds about 40 other events with AU government and his personal charity interests.

With the Matildas out the last thing Aussies and the Aus Govt would be interested in is William turning up and having to find him worthy PR stuff to do to be put in English newspapers, to occupy his time and supposedly justify being there.
William hasn?t performed a public engagement for about a month. How long do his holidays last? And why couldn?t Kate go and take Charlotte with her if William can?t be bothered. And as President of the FA it?s William?s duty to be bothered about this Cup final. It?s all about duty with these two isn?t it?
Right and his carbon footprint for 2 hours IMO is not worth going either. He can make the team, their families, their loved one a party at Windsor Castle.
Although it?s the result none of us wanted, @Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud. Your spirit & drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come. Thank you for the footballing memories.
Congratulations to Spain. W

There are plenty direct commercial flights from London to Marseille (1H45M) and Bordeaux (1H15m), by train it's too long for a day trip. My favorite travel website sent me a Rugby World Cup travel alert of many cheap choices.
Less carbon footprint is British Airways followed by Jet Blue.

@Nightowl, I have to say that Anne was the one that caught my attention this time too. She was so relaxed and engaging during the conversation. I appreciated that while it was humorous and fun, there were some crucial life lessons being shared during this podcast ie: that team sports can teach children to be gracious winners and losers and that the nature of the activity requires teamwork.

Yes, it was an enjoyable experience for them as a family, 4 members of the same family all working, enjoying each other's company, being who they are regardless of titles or money, and the country I hope views this as a family together, no bickering, no backstabbing, just friendly loving members of the same family. I wonder if they all got together when this was over and really laughed at comments and views of what and where things happened.......Yes, Anne was so comfortable there, laughing and giggling and smiling the whole time with all of them. That showed me she was close to not just Mike her so/in/law but William and Catherine. That says a lot to me and so good to see. I saved the link somehow...lol....my tech skills are not good, I lose things, if Deb was around she would of loved this podcast...I think of her daily!

The Prince of Wales pays tribute following death of Sir Bobby Charlton ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/the-prince-of-wales-pays-tribute-following-death-of-sir-bobby-charlton-194287/)
QuoteThe Prince of Wales has led tributes to football legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, who has died at the age of 86.
In a statement, Prince William described Sir Bobby as a true great and a gentleman, adding he would be ??remembered forever??.
And William?s emotional message ended simply ??thank you, Sir Bobby??. It was signed ?W?.
Sir Bobby Charlton died on the morning of October 21st 2023 with his family at his side.
The Prince of Wales joined a wave of tributes to the football star who was one of England?s World Cup winners in 1966.
Sir Bobby was one of the most successful football players of all time. He wont 106 caps for England and scored 49 goals for his country.
Today, Prince William at the funeral of Sir Bobby Charlton
Sir Robert Charlton CBE was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder or centre-forward. Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the year he also won the Ballon d'Or.
Charlton died at Macclesfield District General Hospital in Macclesfield, Cheshire, on 21 October 2023, at the age of 86, from complications of a fall he sustained at the nursing home where he resided; at the subsequent inquest, the coroner recorded his cause of death as "trauma in the lungs, a fall and dementia." His death leaves Sir Geoff Hurst as the last surviving English player of the 1966 World Cup final.
Manchester United paid tribute to Charlton at their Champions League match against Copenhagen at Old Trafford three days later in a number of ways. First, United's players wore black armbands, and manager Erik ten Hag was flanked by Alex Stepney and U-21 captain Dan Gore before ten Hag laid a wreath and a minute's silence was observed before the match began. Another wreath was also laid in Charlton's seat in the director's box. In addition, the cover of United's match programme, the United Review, featured Charlton on the front, and supporters laid flowers and scarves at the United Trinity.
