King Michael has been failing for quite a long time. The death of Queen Anne must have been a huge blow and I do think his daughters have been preparing for the eventuality that the King might not have long to live. He has had an interesting life I think, even though it's been lived mainly in exile his eldest daughters seem to be reasonably popular in Romania.
@Curryong-Yes I do agree that his life has been very interesting and that he will be reunited with Anne in the near future. The Romanian royal family might not ever regain its former role in the nation, but they do seem to well respected there. They like the Serbian and Portuguese royal families seem to have an unofficial status in their countries in which they are invited to various events.

Oh dear. but he has had a long life. I don't think the monarchy will be restored though.
I once read somewhere that some part of Romania was considering offering Charles their crown but he declined. Is it true or were they just having a laugh? I would have thought that he would not accept such a proposition given the fact that he gets on so well with the ex-royals of Romania?
Prince Charles was offered the title of 'Prince of Transylvania,' because of his promotion of Romania, by the Mayor of some town in the region when he was there on tour with Camilla earlier this year. He never replied to the offer and I doubt it was taken seriously by anyone.
Nevertheless, I think Charles is proud of his descent (through Queen Mary's father) from Vlad the Impaler, as he has often mentioned it. Of course the Queen and his own sons also share that heritage. Charles visits his properties in Romania every year and is very fond of the country.

No I would be surprised if it was, but they seem to have earned a respected status since their return after the fall of the communist regime.
but there is no heir, I gather. Margarita is the heir, but she has no children. Then there's issues with the grandson Nicolai? think they'd be much better to announce now that when he's gone the RF are gone too, they're not going to do anything other than an occasional visit... Its not as if they were a dynasty with a long history in Romania.
I don't think Margarita or her husband Radu will be inclined to leave! Of course they are growing old and there are no children but King Michael clung on so fiercely to Romania and the remnants of his throne as these exiled monarchs are inclined to do, that I think Margarita would feel it would be disloyal to give it all up.
Plus of course it was strictly because of the communist regime that Michael was forced out, it wasn't as if the population was in the palace courtyard with pitchforks and burning torches or anything!
Michael and his family seem to have reached a pleasant sort of accommodation with the government and people and so I think this generation is OK as a sort of quasi First Family, as they appear to be reasonably popular. I have reservations about Radu, and I don't think this is going to continue on with whatever grandchildren remain, so it will be short lived I think.
King Michael of Romania Is Dead at 96 - The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/05/obituaries/king-michael-romania-dead.html)
The king was one of the last heads of state from WWII. He was related to many of the members of Europe's royal families, including Britain's Duke of Edinburgh. He was predeceased by his wife Queen Anne. His eldest daughter Margarita is the caretaker of the throne. His youngest daughter Princess Marie was at his beside when he passed away.
QuoteKing Michael of Romania, who was credited with pre-emptively saving thousands of lives in World War II when, at 22, he had the audacity to arrest the country?s dictator, a puppet of Hitler, died on Tuesday at his residence in Switzerland. He was 96.
The King will lie in state at Pelesh Castle in Romania.
So the King is dead! Even though long expected, this must be dreadful for his daughters. He is now with his loved wife. What an extraordinary life he has led, exiled for most of it yet still a King deeply concerned for his homeland and people. I suppose there will be a State funeral and burial in Romania. He was a cousin of Prince Philip's and they played together in boyhood. Perhaps Charles will represent his father. Too far to go, too cold, for Prince Philip now.
Regele Mihai a murit. Majestatea Sa avea 96 de ani - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRfY8kmrjLk)
A lovely clip with film footage from his long and incredible life.I'm happy for him that he was able to return to his homeland after it had thrown off the shackles of Nazi and Communist rule. While he never regained the throne, he was considered to be a respected elder statesman in his country. I agree
@Curryong that Charles is the one most likely to attend due to his connections with Romania and his friendship with CP Margarita.
With his death, I believe this just leaves former King Simeon of Bulgaria as one of the last WWII heads of state and his fellow former "boy king" of the Balkans.

The laying in State and funeral will undoubtedly be an unforgettable occasion for grieving Romanians. I do wonder about the future of the Romanian royal House, however. There have been so many disruptions, controversies, the motivations of Radu, King Michael's son in law, challenges from the Hohenzollen branch over male promigenture as per House rules, the banishment of grandson Nicholas Medworth Mills, and deportment of the King's younger daughters. And how can Crown Princess Margerita call herself Queen with no authority from her country?
I hope they will give up any pretensions to the throne. they are liked it seems in Rumania, as special patrons of the country, and if they want to go on doing charity work, for the people I think it si a great idea. But give up the idea of its becoming a monarchy again
Good points
@amabel and
@Curryong. I understand that she will use the title Queen according to some articles, but I don't believe that they'll seek a restoration of the monarchy anytime soon.

I thnk it is quite ridiculous. the RF are lucky that they are still liked in Roumania, and I think that's partly due to King Michael, but there does not seem to be a sutiable heir and I don't think that the Rumanians want them back as a RF. They are happy to have some connection, for historical reasons but I think that they look foolish if they are still trying to act like they are claiming the throne.

Yes it is easy, and a very distinguished group indeed gathered to pay tribute to the late King. He had connections all over, both familial and through friendships. The King and Queen of Sweden there and Juan Carlos and Sophia of Spain. I see Constantine of Greece won't be there but his wife and son will be, Charles solo but that was expected. Philip was just too old and frail to travel and Charles has a great interest in Romania anyway.
^^^I noticed Constantine's absence too. I wonder if his mobility and health issues are keeping him at home, but I'm glad to see that Queen Anne Marie, Prince Nikolas and Princess Irene will be in attendance for the Greek Royal Family.

This is interesting and this blogger is personally acquainted with the Romanian Royal Family.
There has been a lot of palaver about his being excluded from the "succession" because of his having a patnerity suit against him, I believe. And he didn't get to see his grandfather before he died...because of King M's disapproval of this...
Apparently Nicholas married very quickly too, (to somebody else) and didn't tell anyone. Nicholas is very popular in Romania. I wouldn't be surprised if there has been some plotting by the old King's son in law who's married to the new Queen.
They really should give up this nonsense about "the succession" and who's in the RF etc. Its not a royal family anymore, I don't believe there will be a restoration.. and they just make themselves look ridiciulous...
I read a few weeks ago on another forum that there had been this problem with Nicholas having had a paternity case from a woman.. and the King being so annoyed iwht this that he demoted Nicholas out out of the RF. Now Nicholas is secretly marrying some other woman... its all getting a bit too silly...
While I respect King Michael, i think that if he did get Nicholas out becuase of a pregnancy, it was a bit OTT .. Mabye there were other issues, but for them to be disputng and quarrelling and "who's in and out of the RF" going on, just looks foolish
After so many generations & marriages outside is a bloodline really the same anyway? If there is no throne is there really a Monarchy or just a name? :king:
They are clearly hoping for a restoration, and they are quite popular in Romania, but I don't think that this means there will be a restoration. Esp if they are engaged in fighting and disputes...
The dynasty does not have deep roots there...
I agree
@amabel that it would be surprising to see a restoration in Romania. Their current situation of a semi-public status keeps them above the political fray. I guess the big question is who will succeed Margarita in the future as the Custodian of the Crown?

Interesting, and at the least a part victory. I can't help feeling that if Queen Margarita had a couple of adult sons devoting themselves to Romania and good works among the people that the government might be very, very amenable to bringing in a constitutional monarchy in another few years.
She doesn't however, and there's the rub. The biggest challenge this Royal House faces is the lack of suitable heirs (male or female) after Margarita, who is no spring chicken herself. It will be interesting to see who emerges as heir to this throne in the future.
Restore the monarchy I say but put constitutional limits. Republicans can be so dreary. They have this habit of sucking the life out of a room with their "worthy" discussions about merit, only to elect megalomaniac with money against the will of the vast majority of citizens.

Yes this is quite a problem for the Romanian royal house. IMHO they're in a unique situation as they appear to be more trusted by the public than their elected officials, but its a system that is built on a hereditary succession.
There aer 5 daughters, don't any of them have children?
Margarita the eldest and Guardian of the Crown now her father is dead is married and has no children. House rules as they now stand forbid female heirs from ascending the throne.
Princess Elena has been married twice. She has a son and a daughter. Her son is Nicholas Medforth-Mills, formerly Prince Nicholas the heir to the throne, who was specifically stripped of his titles by his grandfather before he died, following a serious family rift. He has a sister Karin.
Princess Irina was stripped of her titles, styles and rights to the throne following her and her husband's conviction over illegal cockfights at their property in rural Oregon in 2013. She has two children, a son Michael and a daughter Angelica. Both are married and have children. However, their rights to the throne are affected because of Irina, both are US born and bred and have shown little interest in Romania, or residing there.
Princess Sophie had a brief marriage and one daughter Elisabeta-Maria.
Princess Maria was married to a Polish nobleman and is now divorced. There are no children.

QuoteWednesday of this week Her Majesty Margareta, custodian of the crown of Romania and her husband Prince Radu attended a ceremony where a new book about King Michael was presented. A large audience took part in the event. Following the book-launch, a short concert was held in memory of the king.
I see things continue as they have been in Romania, after the King's death, with the exception of Her Majesty Queen Margareta's position. It's an odd compromise. A styling without an official crown, really. Do wonder about the future as well.
It is pretty nonsenscial IMO. Michael was king for a time, so it is OK for him to have called himself King.. but I can't see any sense in Margareta doing this.. esp when there is no heir and no real call for the monrarchy to return.
Yes the title of "Custodian of the Crown" is an interesting one, but perhaps it was the best compromise as I believe this was still a male heirs only situation. Now the only "acceptable" male heir has been removed from the line of succession and has lost his title. However he is still very popular in Romania.
I just think the whole thing is silly. If there was a realistic hope of the monarchy being restored.. but as it is, the family can if they want to lead a normal life rather than the restricted one of a royal family.
Even though RRF are no longer reigning, they seem to have found a place in society as it seems that many citizens are still skeptical of the government. People seem to have some respect for Margarita.

Yes, especially the manner of it, involving cruelty to animals by Irina and her husband. It would make some sense of she intended to return to Romania and help her sister but otherwise, no.

I was going to inquire if some of the photographs include pictures of Michael as a young boy with his father King Carol II. However, the article mentions the photos begin in the 1960s.
Would there be that many photos of Michael with his father? King Carol was not a likeable fellow to say the least and treated his ex wife (Helen) and son appallingly in many ways. Carol was an unfaithful and unpleasant husband and a neglectful father from what I?ve always read. I?m sure Michael had many interesting photos of his own family and of fellow royals, many of them relatives, that could be shown to the public eventually, without King Carol being in the mix.

Considering that Carol had abandoned his family and nation early on, I don't believe that there would be too many. And as you mentioned, the photos to be shared were taken in the 1960's. I would expect some photos with Queen Mother Helen though.

I?m always intrigued about the future of the Romanian RF. Crown Custodian Margareta is in her 70s now and isn?t going to last forever. There seem to be few males in the RRF, at least ones who are prepared to take on a representative role, though I guess Nicolai may be rehabilitated in the next few years after blotting his copybook with King Michael over his private life.
@Curryong-I have to agree that at some point, Nicolai will be "rehabilitated" just like his Aunt Irina was recently. He's learned the language unlike his mother and his aunts. He's married a woman of Romanian descent. He's active in charities that benefit the country. And as we know, he's the only male heir plus he has a child born in wedlock who could be the future head of the royal family.
For the time being, the Romanian Royals do have a representational role within the country which seems to be satisfactory to all involved.

Nicholas is really the only option in the immediate family. It seems with his life in Romania, wife and daughter, and life they have already started the process of rehabilitating them. They are the closest former monarchy to being restored really, at least a semi official role.
His sister, and his two cousins have little to no connection to Romania. And seemingly no interest.
Michael only had a 1/2 brother. He has a nephew Paul Phlippe of Romania. He tried to claim the throne on at least once occasion. But he was convicted of crimes and sentenced to 3 years in prison this past December. I highly doubt any chance he had of being recognized as heir died then. He is 73 anyways but he does have a son unlike his cousin. But I don't see them going to that branch of the family over Nicholas.
Yes, Nicholas looks as if he will take on the role of Custodisn in the next generation. He may have a son in the future, already has a daughter, though I guess the House rules could be changed if she has no brothers. Michael had only daughters, no sons, but didn?t do change anything. I think Margarita has little option but to agree to Nicholas?s rehabilitation as males are very thin on the ground in the family!

Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown is this week on a four-day long visit to the United Kingdos with her husband Prince Radu of Romania. It?s the latest in a long line of visits between the two families.
The first visit of the Royal Family of Romania to London took place in 1874 when Sovereign Prince Carol I and Princess Elizabeth met with the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The first British royal visit to Romania took place at Peles Castle, in 1888, when the future King Edward VII was the guest of King Carol I. The most recent Romanian royal visits to Great Britain took place in December 2018 and December 2019.
This visit saw a very special meeting between Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romania, Prince Radu and The Queen who welcomed them to Windsor Castle. The meeting, on November 24th 2021, followed a trip to the Royal Defence College. The college was also visited by the Romanian Royal Family in February 2017, and the members of the college visited Elisabeta Palace in May 2018.
The first day of the visit also included a trip to the Mansion House where they were welcomed by the current Lord Mayor of London. Prince Radu was also the guest of the British Paralympic Association.
Are Margareta of Romania and Queen Elizabeth II related?
They are distantly related as descendants of the mother-in law and father-in-law of Europe: the UK's 🇬🇧 Queen Victoria and Denmark's Denmark 🇩🇰 King Christian IX.
King Michael and Crown Princess Margareta of Romania attended The Cambridge's wedding.
The Wessexes also opened their home to the Romanian Royal Couple so they could discuss the DoE Award. I know that Charles and Margareta being of a similar age are longtime friends, but it's nice to see that there's a relationship with the Wesseses too.

The Surrey home is Edward and Sophie?s official residence, and the royals gathered to discuss The Duke of Edinburgh?s Award.
On the Custodian of the Crown?s official website, it is noted: ?Prince Edward is the royal patron of the British Paralympic Association and one of the most active members of the Royal Family in the activities of the world organization of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.?
In Romania, Margareta is the Royal Patron of The Duke of Edinburgh International Award Romania; and Prince Radu is the Royal Patron of the National Paralympic Committee of Romania.
According to the Custodian of the Crown?s website, Edward and Sophie last visited Romania in 2013 and met with Margareta and Prince Radu at the Elizabeth Palace.
Margareta and Prince Radu were in the United Kingdom for a four-day visit last week. Among their engagements included a private audience with The Queen at Windsor Castle on 24 November; the unveiling of a bronze bust of King Michael of Romania?Margareta?s late father?at the Romanian Embassy in London to mark the centenary of his birth; and meetings with financial and Olympic representatives to discuss the links between the UK and Romania.

Apologies for going off topic, but this is on my mind. After the news of Russia's invasion into Ukraine can't help but wonder how the non-reigning but now residing royal families in Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria are feeling today. As former Soviet Eastern Bloc nations, they're were heavily impacted by the presence of the Soviet (Russian) army after WWII. Bulgaria's King Simeon was a child during the occupation.

Yes, these royal families, and others had a hellish time in WW2 due to Nazi invasions. Those in the East and Central Europe were then faced with ?liberating? Russian troops, adding the death knell to reigns of the monarchs of the time.
Incidentally, and I?ve thought this for weeks, Putin?s attitude towards Ukraine and other border states has distinct similarities Hitler?s during the Sudetenland crisis (and then invasion) shortly before WW2. (There are great differences though and imo, though this is a very nasty situation I don?t believe WWIII is approaching because of it.)

It's terrifying to see the results of the bombardment in cities across Ukraine and heartening to see how ferociously its citizens are determined to preserve their independence. No wonder the nations on Ukraine's western border-Poland, Moldova, Romania are so very concerned now with the number of refugees that are entering.

Princess Maria of Romania visits Ukrainian border ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/romania/princess-maria-of-romania-visits-ukrainian-border-174656/)
QuotePrincess Maria of Romania has visited the Isaccea border control station in Tulcea County near Ukraine along with representatives of the Children in Difficulty Foundation to see what is being done to help refugees as they flee the wartorn country.
Over the past few weeks, the Romanian Royal Family has contributed greatly to helping Ukrainian refugees in Romania. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have found their way to Romania since the war began as the countries share a border.
The Children in Distress Foundation began working in Romania in 1990 as a branch of the Children in Distress Foundation in Great Britain. Princess Maria is the patron of the Romanian branch.
Representatives of local authorities and the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations welcomed Princess Maria before she visited the customs tents and met those helping Ukrainian refugees. She also spoke to volunteers and thanked them for their work during such a difficult time in Europe.
Princess Maria of Romania was born in 1964 in Copenhagen, Denmark as the fifth and youngest daughter of King Michael I and Queen Anne of Romania. She has lived in Romania since 2015 and carried out public duties on behalf of the defunct monarchy.
Princess Maria?s older sister, Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, is the leader of the Romanian Red Cross. As the crisis in Ukraine has unfolded, she has worked with the Red Cross in Romania to assist those in neighbouring Ukraine.
Romania has been contributing a significant amount of humanitarian aid to Ukrainians and Ukraine.

Photo (https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=559967892158822)
Lovely and not surprising he has been named for Nicolas' grandfather who he was extremely close to growing up.
The name is even more symbolic and not simply being born on Good Friday. On Easter 1992 King Michael was permitted to return home after 45 years in exile to celebrate Easter with his people (his previous attempt he had been stopped by police and made to leave). While he wouldn't return to live in Romania until 1997 when his citizenship was restored, it was a historic moment.

Good Friday in 1992 was April 17th, so 2 days early, but little Michael makes his entrance almost exactly 30 years to the date his great-grandfather got to come home (even if just holiday that time).
Yes, it?s lovely that the baby was named for his great-grandfather. His father Nicholas may well be reinstated into the succession now that he and his wife have a son.
How long would the process take for Nicholas to be reinstated into the succession?
