What huge meals the later Victorians and the Edwardians consumed on a daily basis! Breakfasts with everything from bap rolls to porridge, eggs done three ways and kedgeree, to lunches at shoots with pies and turnovers and wine, to cream teas and then multiple course dinners. No wonder so many were overweight. King Edward VII used to consume sandwiches and hock after his huge dinners when he played bridge in the evenings and Queen Victoria's coffin was reputedly as square as it was long!
