As president of The FA, he played a key role in last year's 150th anniversary, notably a football match and celebration of grassroots heroes at Buckingham Palace and a gala dinner on the date of the FA's founding.

The charities that will be benefiting are the following: William's-Child Bereavement, Centre Point, Tusk, London Air Ambulance (30th anniversary campaign.)

Duchess of Cambridge swaps Wimbledon Royal Box for Court 14 to cheer on British wildcard

The Duchess of Cambridge has swapped the Royal Box for a low-key seat on the Wimbledon outer courts, as she lends her support to British wildcard player Harriet Dart.
The Duchess, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, will spend the day at Wimbledon meeting players and watching the second day of action.

Edit to Add: HRH first saw a match at Court 14 between Britain?s Harriet Dart and US? Christina McHale. Ms Dart is a SportsAid alumna. The Duchess is patron of SportsAid.

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA 2019: RETURN OF THE KINGS CUP

In commemoration of the centenary of the 1919 Royal Henley Peace Regatta, Military VIIIs will once again compete against each other at Henley Royal Regatta after a one hundred year hiatus.
For the first time, male and female military athletes will row in the same boat at an elite international event. The King?s Cup will see crews from the original six nations of Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, joined by Germany and the Netherlands, competing in a knock-out format over the final three days of the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta.
Sir Steve Redgrave, Chairman of the Regatta?s Committee of Management, said: ?The Regatta is delighted to host such an important commemoration. The 1919 Royal Henley Peace Regatta was a key milestone in our sport and was staged by the rowing community to help heal wounds and hasten the return to normality of the Allied nations and their troops recovering from the First World War?.

QuoteShe is promoting herself
Actually Catherine is there today as the patron of All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and as the patron of Sports Aid. So in truth she's really promoting the patronages that she represents just like any other working member of the BRF.

Catherine watched British tennis player Harriet Dart ( a Sports Aid funded athlete) on Court 14 today in early round competition. She also met with retired and current players along with those who work with AELTC and Sports Aid. Today Catherine also met with those volunteers from the Lawn Tennis Association and handed out awards.

This is a great deal of coverage for day two of the tournament. Typically the heaviest coverage is seen in the second week.

We have a misunderstanding here, as I said yesterday Sports is specific to the media as in placing the sports news in sports section, Sports Channels, when a VIP OF INTEREST is all over the news related to sports, it switches to Front Page News and All TV sections rather than only sports channels.

As you may see today, Wimbledon is not Front Page News nor in all sections of the TV (and Radio), you would need to go i.e. to ESPN to watch your tennis game, or CLICK Sports Section to read the tennis progress.  But yesterday it was all over because of a VIP of Interest, which was the Duchess of Cambridge.

Thank you for the update @wannable. Yes with a high profile VIP attending the second day of the tournament, the coverage was more extensive.

Thank you.

Today Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Carole are at the Royal Box, Centre Court, you need to ''scroll down'' to ''Wimbledon News'' in the ''Sports Section'', they are fairly the big size news in that Section, then the other ''mini'' boxes are the tennis news.

Quoten another display of kindness, the Duchess helped Martina Navratilova?s mother get a UK visa. This was after she heard the story of how none of Navratilova?s family could watch her win the championship because they could not leave communist Czechoslovakia.

This was often the case with athletes competing at high profile competitions in Western nations. This kept the athletes in line and more likely not to defect. :(

I'm glad Wimbledon never tried got rid of Duchess of Kent over Diana. Nor I think she'll like getting involved in this sort of situation.

I like this Kate dress at Wimbledon - very classy

As QEII was the patron of AELTC she might have considered Edward Kent and possible Katherine Kent at some point, but the Duchess really retired from royal life quite awhile ago so perhaps had she remained in the BRF Diana would have been the candidates.

Catherine, Duchess of Kent succeeded her mother in Law Marina Duchess of Kent who awarded the trophies. Catherine did retire from royal life so her husband awarded the trophies.

Wonderful game - and these special ladies are bringing even more attention to the sport. Wimbledon probably didn't need any boost to its popularity, but the sport itself is a great one to encourage for the young, at least I think so. I also thought that if the Court is trying to show there is no feud, they couldn't have done better than to bring Pippa along. It's subtle, but it says she is part of the Middleton circle.

I don't care for the invented feud.  Today I feel very happy that Kate and Meghan thoroughly enjoyed each others company, including Pippa, it may be excellent, a new friendship for both ladies and vice versa.

I am baffled with the replies to Kier Simmons tweet with picture/video proof of the 3 ladies chatting, laughing and clearly having fun.  Some of the Sussex fans loved him, highly regarded him.  The dislike of/they have towards Kate (and Pippa) they just black listed him, including their fan squad leader.  I hope it's momentarily or that Kate and Meghan can do some duty outings together, I think that was great positive media.

It was a DOC official visit, announced by KP and in the CC.  Therefore, there was/is a protocol to follow...

Time will tell if Pippa will be the Annabel Elliot 2.0 of Kate or a LIW.

Pippa did very well (she channeled the exact behavior of the Queen's LIW), nothing to write, almost invisible until they take a seat, translate that no Wimbledon official whispers or a Sports reporter there saying she was interrupting or whatever Kate's initial going early; meeting officials, junior tennis players and the lunch.

All in all, what a great day for the threesome.  Here Hoping all goes well for both official events tomorrow of the DOC and DOS (another Wimbledon and the Lion King)  :blowkiss:

Kate might be patron of the All England club but that doesn't mean she's in charge of who sits in the Royal Box, or foe what the arrangements are for other royals, and just because Meghan sat next to Kate doesn't mean she was under Kate's superintendence. I'm sure that it was arranged among the sisters in law as it was known that both were going to the Ladies Final and then the Wimbledon officials were informed and made the arrangements.

As for Pippa being regarded by Kate as a potential L-in-W, she and her sister have been to Wimbledon loads of times, with friends and in family parties. There's nothing unusual about it. It wasn't exactly a novelty for Pippa to be in the Royal Box (nor was it the first time for Meghan.)

Kate is not in charge, it's Mr. Brooks by request from the Duke of Kent and Duchess of Cambridge, the rest he allocates as he deems appropriate.

BUT Meghan was Kate's guest. Said by the official KP, and look Sussex Royal Instagram.

It seems so shallow to talk about their clothing, but since this was posted I'll put in my two cents' worth. I don't think Meghan won the Centre Court style final. The style and cut of the skirt and blouse did not suit her at all. On the other hand, the color of Catherine's dress would be more fitting for spring or fall - light colors are best for summer. Of the three sitting together, Pippa Mathews looked best and won the Centre Court style final. More importantly, it was great that they were all together and seemed to enjoy each other's company.

I thought so too, but after reading Patrick Jephson article, where he states that Royals going to Wimbledon, a public arena, where there is Live TV, millions around the world watching, and professional and random public taking pictures of the tennis players, celebrities and royals...I opened my eyes and definitely wear smart looking clothing.  Meghan's style is interesting and different (yesterday, the jeans look of previous week I didn't like at all) Wimbledon is the oldest competition ever, and the game was invented by the English.

The dresses were ill fitting on both Meghan and Kate. Kate's dress was too tight and since Meghan is still losing baby weight she might have chosen something more figure flattering. I think Pippa is rather dull in her choice of wardrobe. Just my take.

I agree @Princess Cassandra that Poppa's outfit was the best that day. Catherine should retire the green dress IMO though she likely wanted to give a nod to the club colors. I like Meghan's skirt but I am not sure if it was the best look for her. Her olive tent dress was one of her better looks recently.
Again it was great to see the ladies enjoying the match and it was a nice gesture on Catherine's part to invite Meghan and Pippa to the Ladies' Championship and Doubles' Championship. Sorry for Serena as it must have been frustrating to lose again. Equally surprising when yesterday's wunderkind is now in the same place as the veterans before her ie: Steffi Graff.

OMG a FIVE HOUR Men's final!!!

Folks must have got sunburnt in that Mens' Final!  I am sorry for Serena, also. Clearly she felt the loss keenly. She missed Billie Jean King's point, but hopefully as she puts the loss behind her and thinks about what Ms. King said she will realize that it wasn't meant to be cruel.  I think BJK wants Serena to be successful and was sorry for the loss as well.

They will open as a prelude to Cowes Week, which is quintessentially British thing to do/go during summer since 1920, it's the most important economical week for the Isle of Wight. Approx. 1.3 to 1.5 Million visitors, the entire Cowes turns into a huge festival.  After the DOC's King's Cup, during the week there is usually pro and amateur regatta races; 800 boats, 1000 competitors.  People can do day trips or stay (although by end of June, usually it's sold out).

Land Rover is sponsoring the DOC's regatta (and their 8 chosen charities for this year) and apparently have signed up for years to come.

The King?s Cup: the celebrities joining William and Kate ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/cambridge/the-kings-cup-the-celebrities-joining-william-and-kate-127919/)

QuoteThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be joined by six well known faces for the King?s Cup regatta which takes place on the Isle of Wight next week. Adventurer Bear Grylls and double Olympic rowing champion, Helen Glover, are among the ambassadors at the race supporting a wide range of charities.

Eight boats will take part in the regatta representing charities chosen by William and Kate. The Duke of Cambridge has selected Child Bereavement UK and he?ll lead their team. His other picks are Centrepoint which will be represented by England football international Fara Williams, Tusk whose boat will be led by Bear Grylls and the London?s Air Ambulance Charity which will welcome historian and author, Dan Snow, to its crew.

Kate has chosen four organisations for the event, as well. The Duchess of Cambridge will lead the boat for The Royal Foundation. Her other selections include Action on Addiction whose team will include comedian John Bishop. TV presenter, Kate Thistleton, will be part of the crew representing Place2Be while Helen Glover will join the boat for the Anna Freud Centre.

William and Kate announced the King?s Cup race for their chosen charities back in May. The event, which takes place on Friday August 9th 2019, will include a number of races with the teams taking to the water in Fast-40 boats, described as high performance boats with crews of 12 people. The winners will be presented with the King?s Cup on the afternoon of the race. The cup itself was first presented in 1920 by King George V, a keen sailor.

Spectators wanting to see the action will be able to access the SailGP Race Village for free on the day of the event while waterfront activities are also planned.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are hoping that the King?s Cup will become an annual event supporting different charities and raising awareness of the benefits of sport.

QuoteThe Welsh Rugby Union had 60 buckets for fans to make donations to those affected by the floods, and has pledged ?100,000 to support clubs.

Staff have volunteered to help with the clear-up operation across the country.

The union is also taking steps to help with equipment lost in the flooding, as well as providing specialist expertise with recovering and maintaining damaged pitches.

Martyn Phillips, group chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union, speaking ahead of the match, said: ?These are exceptional circumstances and we have therefore decided to allocate dedicated funds and resources to help out rugby clubs in need in communities throughout the country.

?There is money put aside for emergencies such as these and we will take great care to ensure that we target both money and resources in the right areas so that we are helping those who need it most.?

Glad to see that the Welsh Rugby charity is helping those affected by the recent flooding as well as their usual work of assisting those who were injured while playing.

So it seems that the Cambridges spent their half term break in Norfolk with the kiddies joining in with the lambing season. This is an incredibly busy time for the farmers with the new additions to their flocks.

As an ex sports person, I love the scheme of Sports Aid UK, not everyone who 'qualifies' top 5 get commercial sponsorship.  The industries that sponsor are ''still' with the mindset that one (both genders) must be physically attractive, if not, be no. 1 worldwide.

After I retired from sport, I was a Director at the sports federation for the Olympic committee, we created a similar scheme for those who made it, but had zilch private commercial sponsors, i.e. from footwear, clothing, airline, food, beverage, etc. companies. We basically and firstly sponsored the gifted with free Education (university included), health, insurance, a gifted housing, the 'country' Olympic clothing was their basic.

What about the none top 5 of each sport; the scheme gives them basic training facility with donor wear. Usually there's cafeterias with really great nutritional meals and almost free, a penny.

I'm a huge tennis fan, and Wimbledon being one of the 3 biggest highlights in the ATP and WTA, I will miss it this year very much.  The ATP/WTA have decided to squeeze a bunch of tournaments this coming August 2020 with no fans, i.e. like premier football. So at least I'll be watching the US Open and the Roland Garros.

I'm glad that William is following Harry and Meghan in contacting big tech firms in an effort to fight racism and hatred on social media.

However, I'm just wondering where William, and the rest of the RF was, when Meghan, his own sister in law, their own relative by marriage, was living in the UK and being pounded night and day by trolls and the tabloids.

Here was a biracial woman and none of them, not one, including him, raised a finger to assist her. No word in her defence, no shared engagements, no word in any statement. So apparently she didn't matter to him but this does.

Because if you are it suggests you don?t know very much about British soccer! The fans? reaction to the news and the threat of legal penalties to the clubs administration are the key to the recent moves.

The Football Association (also known as The FA) is the governing body of association football in England and the Crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. Formed in 1863, it is the oldest football association in the world and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the amateur and professional game in its territory.

The office holders in order are: The President, Chairman, Secretary, Chief Executive, General Secretary and Executive Director.

The President is the highest holder, who would you prefer to have written the official communication?

@Macrobug67 - These appear to be the big issues that fan have with the Super League.

Why are football fans protesting against Super League plans? | Goal.com (https://www.goal.com/en/news/why-are-football-fans-protesting-against-super-league-plans/8css5g43wcyc1bhv4qwtr6pko)

QuoteWhat is the Super League?

The Super League is a new breakaway league featuring 20 of the biggest clubs in Europe, including 12 established "founding clubs" ? Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter and Milan ? set to rival the Champions League.

The 15 founding clubs will be competing in the tournament on a permanent basis, unable to be relegated (three more founding clubs are still yet to be confirmed).

Three additional guest teams will fill the remaining spots each year, based on their success in their respective domestic leagues.

It is understood that clubs playing in the Super League will still feature in their domestic leagues, but with the competition for the top four all but removed, and with their Super League presence never in danger, the tournament could threaten to imbalance football forever.

Fans and teams complain.

QuoteThere have been many reasons about why there has been so much backlash to the Super League, but the overwhelming issues are that the competition is elitist and exclusionary, removing healthy competition, and that the owners of the clubs involved seem to be more fuelled by financial reasons than by a genuine love of the game.

Fans of the "Big Six" Premier League teams were left upset and disappointed by the Super League announcement, having not been informed of the plans. Coaches and players were also not aware of the situation.

In the hours following the confirmation of the Super League, fans of the Premier League "Big Six" took to their stadiums to protest the announcement, with Liverpool fans hanging banners and flags outside of Anfield.

Chelsea supporters then voiced their concerns at Stamford Bridge in numbers prior to their Premier League game against Brighton.

Oh please! Fans were riled up about this proposed Super League as soon as it was announced. There were protests all over Twitter.

I have large numbers of friends and family all over England still, and it was practically the sole topic of conversation in the last two series of calls I made to about twenty people in all age groups.

Nobody on those calls even mentioned William?s tweet and quite frankly soccer fans in England couldn?t care less about tweets from Patrons not involved in the day to day running of the FA, nor about official statements from anyone, President, Chairman, etc whoever they are.

It?s truly bizarre to believe that fans only publicly protested (in Britain anyway) because they were waiting for some signal from Prince William. As I said there were ructions and protests from many followers of the game and officials from the beginning.

Yes, of course the FA had to do its job in the face of this incipient rebellion. And that job was done by people whose careers have been in soccer admin for years, usually decades and know the game inside out.

What was done and is being done within the FA (and other football overseeing bodies)  would have been done in exactly the same way over the past week if the Patron (another name for the President) was Bozo the Clown or Dumbo the Elephant. And these administrators know exactly what the fans in the stands wanted them to do.

Btw, I?m not sure why the FA was highlighted to three times its normal size in that quote in the last post. If it was for my benefit I do know about the FA. and its history.  I have attended soccer matches in England since childhood in the 1950s (Grimsby Town and Norwich City) and Chelsea and Manchester United many times since.

But that?s the same with 9/10s of the teams in England?s Football League, and always has been. Occasionally one or two do the impossible, but English soccer is dominated season after season by a handful of the top teams in the modern era.

For the Euro2021 which is being held in several countries, a tour for each Group.  The UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin came to London, Wimbley Stadium to have a meeting with FA President, Prince William.

Aleksander said before arriving London ''I will say that Justice is sometimes slow, but it always comes''.   This must be in reference to the ownership scandal of several football teams that wanted to leave the European leg championships to do their own league.  William had calmed the team players and fans, the owners then had desisted from leaving.

The DoK participates in a standing ovation for Dame Sarah Gilbert at Wimbledon today. Dame Sarah is the creator of the Oxford Covid vaccine.

The Duke of Kent joins in an emotional standing ovation at Wimbledon for the creator of the Oxford vaccine ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/kent/the-duke-of-kent-joins-in-an-emotional-standing-ovation-at-wimbledon-for-the-creator-of-the-oxford-vaccine-162357/)

QuoteAs the cameras zoomed in on Dame Sarah, the crowd erupted cheers and a round of applause, before getting to their feet in an unprompted standing ovation.

Dame Sarah was sat alongside her colleagues in the Royal Box alongside the Duke of Kent who also rose to his feet in appreciation.

Also present on the opening day of Wimbledon were NHS staff who were being honoured for their service during the global health emergency, as well as inspirational workers in the community.

BBC commentator and former tennis player Boris Becker said afterwards: ?What an emotional moment starting the championship off.?

It hasn't rained today.  But the rain from day 1 and 2 have made for the first time in Wimby history a total of 85 games today.

It's crazy.

Also Center Court is also for the first time in history - the grass is very slippery, so you have top players going down, the most famous Serena Williams retired without completing the 1st set.

I heard she had been injured.  That?s such a shame and negligent on part of the organizers.
Title: Re: Re: William and Catherine-Sports Patronages: AELTC, Football, Rugby and more
Post by: wannable on June 30, 2021, 04:58:10 PM
Yes, previous to her game witdrawal due to Injury, Adrian Mannarino also got injured and retired, he was winning Roger Federer, saved by the bell.

Which also brings another new historical happening, Serena was the last schedule for Center Court, usually Wimby moves the ''next best not started games to that court at last minute if late afternoon, but it was closed yesterday, they put some fans and dryers.  And yet today Djokovic #1 in the world won but slipped about 4 times.

Center court and Court 1 are the only ones that have roof, so usually late afternoon schedules when done and dusted, the organizers start moving other pending games there.

I'd say he is.

Royals don't attend during weekends, only if the rain delay of day 1 and 2 will make a few appearances happen.  Usually we see extended family from Kate and friends from both William and Harry, military personnel and celebrities (although tomorrow I'm sure they will all prefer to be watching the Euro2021 Football, England will be playing so expect a lot of front page news, win or otherwise, the UK fans are quite loud).

Wimbledon isn?t a separate town. It?s a suburb of Greater London within the borough of Merton. It?s also surrounded by other suburbs regarded as being outer London.

Middle Sunday was implemented as a deal with local residents: The men?s final was long played on a Saturday, but when organizers wanted to move it to Sunday, the community around the All England Club ? a quiet and residential area ? said a day of rest must still be had. So a deal was struck for what we know now as Middle Sunday.

Twitter going cray between the salty royal watchers that W was completely alone at Wembley's royal/presidential box.  The zoomed in pictures of him alone is the cause.

Full picture is to his left Boris Johnson and wife, to his right Denmark's royalty; Fred, Mary and son Christian.  Social distancing included the in between (1) protection officer, futher to the sides a load of PO's.  Above the box is the premium seats and suits, James (F1 Maclaren now, with other F1 people)  with wife Pippa and among well known public persons from politicians, A list celebrities like Guy Richie, Ex footballers, etc.

Excellent news! Glad that she went into isolation so quickly and now will be able to attend the finals this weekend. As I recall in 2019 that Edward Kent presented the Ladies trophy and Catherine presented the Men's.

22 year old Denis Shapovalov, Canadian is playing now his first ever semi final versus the #1 Novak Djokovic.

I'm sure Shapos fans and all the Canadians are very happy and cheering him like the Canuck ESPN commentator, very animated - I don't mind the bias (although I'm a Djoko fan)

ETA: Tennis fans, pundits and commentators call Denis Shapovalov AKA Shapo, Djokovic has various AKA Djoker, Nole

ETAII: I'm fascinated (via tennis players) Shapo's and most or probably all Canadians are children of immigrants. Shapo speaks French, English, Russian, several Jewish languages (hebrew mostly). His mother is a Jewish Russian immigrant. Shapo was born in Israel, has a double nationality but early on in his sport career chose to represent Canada (once you choose, can't switch countries. My case when an athlete)

His real test is what will happen with the owners of some of the English clubs that secretly for money wanted to break away and form their own league with a few other European clubs, but with every football fan almost going quasi hooligan strike in the streets of London, Rome, Madrid, backed out.

These individuals are still owners, but will the people forget?!

William promised the FA and the vast majority of UK football fans that he will 'fix' it...the easiest way is to make those individuals sign a lawful commitment of no break away for 30 years minimum.

I expect the President position will be given to high profile person, with an interest in tennis and knowledge of administration and/or the tennis world. Not immediately however. The FA, William, Southgate (manager of England team), Boris Johnson are asking the social media Twitter, Instagram and Youtube to shut the accounts involved.  It's easy because there is about 1,000 accounts that have been ID versus the universe of watchers, in the UK alone 31 million viewers, plus the billion around the world. The IP addresses indicate approx. 100 are from the UK, the others are rest of the world.

Printed Newspapers that can't backtrack, because it's printed and not digital: Australia and Italy  (the newspapers involved not only had racist headlines but pictures of the 3 England players stating their age (all under 23) that missed the PK, racial profiling them).

Update so far: The racist posts have been deleted by the social media giants, some accounts have been suspended indefinitely, the rest are under investigation because it was the individuals first offense. I hit the abuse button on several, they come in and out weekly abusing athletes left and right and in any sport, weirdos.

I would be extremely surprised if any mainstream or reputable Australian newspapers published any racist headlines or stories about any international or national sports game.

Australia has very strong anti-racial laws which are quickly put in place with regard to anything of that nature being published. The only incident here regarding the match that I know of was a comment on a Channel 7 website that was quickly taken down.

Although Australia has large sectors of its population that are of Italian or British descent as well as some more recent migrants soccer is not a huge sport here. AFL or rugby rule in all States.

There were celebrations in Lygon St (an Italian centre here in Melbourne) last night following the Italy win, but it really was not a big story. There has been a surge in Covid cases in NSW and that is the ?biggie? dominating the news. We are a very multi-cultural country, one of the most diverse in the world.

There was again criticism of William yesterday on Twitter following his statement about racism. The subject of ?Meghan? was trending very soon afterwards.

But it wasn?t just racist trolls whose behaviour is of course to be condemned by any intelligent and balanced individual.

The physical behaviour afterwards was truly disgusting. England fans reverted to the sort of behaviour that for decades made these supporters infamous throughout Europe. Drunken England fans ran riot after the game and began attacking Italian fans outside the ground and elsewhere, screaming, shouting punching, fighting police, defacing posters of English players of colour etc etc.It does absolutely no honour to their team, their country or themselves.

I should have added ?ticketless fans being allowed to crowd into the stadium, missiles being thrown, fights breaking out during the game with blood spilt, too few stewards or police present, and some spectators including children, being genuinely scared?.

All during an international soccer game, an event that was televised all over the world. The organisers of this chaotic mess (the FA) need to have a good, hard look at themselves.

The FA and those in charge at Wembley Stadium need to take a serious look at crowd safety protocols. After all this is not the first major sporting event to take place there.  I am presuming that the Metropolitan Police still coordinate and provide protection for Wembley as they did for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Of course racism anywhere is unacceptable. However it is easier perhaps to ignore the racist taunts if you don?t participate in SM, and easier for the authorities to track such vile posters.

Not so easy maybe for outnumbered stewards and police to confront and eject/arrest yobs (not always young) who are sometimes off their faces with drink and intend to cause trouble at a match. Some people paid good money for seating at Wembley they were deprived of by these idiots and then had to stand, with their children sometimes, near to men fighting each other, shouting, swearing and throwing missiles in and outside the stadium.

All most people wanted to do was watch a good international game of soccer. This hooliganism has been a problem on and off since the 1960s for English fans. Sometimes it wanes, sometimes it waxes, but it?s always there. Trouble is, I can remember a time when it wasn?t like that.

Speaking to The Athletic, Conor Coady has revealed how Prince William entered the England dressing room following the clash to try and lift morale.

"The changing room was quiet after the final," Coady explained. "We were trying to console the three boys. The manager was brilliant at that. Then Prince William came in. I'm big on the royals, fascinated by them and when he walked through the door it was, 'Wow, unbelievable'.

"He gave Rashy, Sanch and Ayo a hug. It was an incredible, incredible moment."

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge today paid a visit to the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club to discuss the ongoing Fan Lead Review of Football Governance with players, management, and fans from various clubs.

Per Kensington Palace, William?s visit was to ?provide an opportunity for those involved in the football pyramid, both on and off the pitch, to put forward their opinions on the interim findings, as well as discuss the importance of grassroots and lower league clubs to English football and how these can best be supported.?

The Fan Led Review was announced earlier this year, in April, to examine the English football system and ways to improve its governance, ownership and financial stability at all levels of play. The aim was to build and strength the benefits of football UK-wide.

The first results and recommendations were released as interim findings in July; and William?s visit allowed him to chat with the Dulwich Hamlet team and managers?including new Director of Football Peter Crouch?about the findings.

Good, he needs the feedback to help solve the scandal issue of that disolved secret superleague.

It's very different to make decisions because huge mobs of people striking all over the UK when the superleague was disclosed versus one on one with fans, management, players in calmer times, not to soon nor to late in time.

I also love that we finally have several clips by Valentine Low (Royal Rota to go, since pandemic, BP and the listed RR's, choose 1/take turns to follow a royal in duty, hoping the future can come back to normal with a dozen or more in tow Source: Richard Palmer thanking Valentine sharing clips, he has to report it to all the RR's) of the Duchess playing tennis rather than still photos. I've read the SM official comments from serious Tennis players to LTA sports heads, they all think Kate is very good at the game. Yay.

Here was a  northern club playing and it?s fans were saying thanks to the Establishment for the Ma Thatcher years when mining communities were destroyed in Wales and the north, and thanks again for the Hillsborough disaster cover-up. Liverpool fans once again booed the national anthem ahead of the Reds' FA Cup final with Chelsea at Wembley.

In keeping with tradition, "God Save The Queen" was sung before kick-off at the national stadium alongside 'Abide With Me' but Reds' fans in attendance booed both tunes. This, however, is something Liverpool fans have done for years.

Both anthems were roundly booed by large swaths of the Liverpool supporters, having also done the same ahead of the Carabao Cup final earlier this season against the same opponents - the Reds eventually running out victors via a dramatic penalty shootout back in February.

Yes, it?s true, booing the National Anthem is a tradition in Liverpool at soccer matches, (and in other places in the North as well.)

However, what about the boos that were clearly heard loud and long when William was shaking hands with the players? No national anthem playing then, just him, a product of the Establishment. And a dislike of the monarchy as a system the further north one travels in the UK, especially among young people and ethnic minorities, isn?t something that can be just brushed off as ?a soccer tradition? in one city. Or it shouldn?t be, by the far-sighted.

Liverpool fans boo everything it seems. William handled it well. There was no booing when he handed out the trophy.

There's hundreds of post on social media condemning it, including leading members of the Labour party.

But at the end of the day, if you're booing your own country's national anthem, it probably says more about Liverpool fans than anything else.

You do know that Britain?s national anthem says nothing whatsoever about the virtues, wonders and strengths of the country England (ies) or of Great Britain itself, right? That it is in fact a paean of praise to the monarch, not to the country, not to its people just the Head of State. It was in fact written originally to a Hanoverian monarch, an import from a foreign dynasty, and adopted thereafter as a national song.

Boy, was I glad when Advance Australia Fair became my country?s anthem in a referendum decades ago! And there have been constant calls for ?Jerusalem? to be England?s national song for years.

Thank you to all who provided background information as to why the Liverpool fans choose to boo the National Anthem and other  patriotic gestures.  Sad to see that the B Positive Choir which was made up of members from the UK's BAME community sang "Abide With Me" were also booed as well.

Personally I  have to agree with @PrincessOfPeace that it says more about the Liverpool fans who were in attendance. <_< Have to say that it continues to show that sadly British football fans have earned a less than favorable impression in the sporting world.

Most of the soccer riots were at international matches, And the laddish behaviour of British hooligan soccer fans has receded in recent years. With a few exceptions.

Plus I would like to know why soccer fans or indeed anyone from a very economically deprived area (post WW2) in the northwest of England, a region not exactly renowned for its worship of pomp, ceremony and the monarchy, is expected to enthusiastically belt out the words to the national anthem on certain occasions. Especially as the Hillsborough disaster and its subsequent coverup by senior police and the elite still lives on in the memory of people there.

It?s not a song dedicated to them or their countrymen and women but a woman whose son sat on a gold throne the other day to open Parliament. Nearby was a priceless crown. Not bad for tourism but whether it speaks volumes to the average Briton eating baked beans for breakfast in a council house is debatable. ?Send her victorious, happy and glorious? indeed!

*Send her victorious, happy and glorious? indeed!*

Just *sad*, we all have our own opinion and are free to say it here....yet the outright hate for HM and her family, well most of them.....is just really sad to see. I like HM, she was *BORN* into that position in life being a member of a royal family and all that it entails , we all have NO choice who our parents are when born...I believe HM made the very best of her life for her country and helped support the entire British Commonwealth. We all make mistakes in life as we are the so called human race.....yet some believe they are of a higher power.

He's the first royal to be President of the FA.

As I said with W or not, the Liverpool fans always have booed (stated by football experts, more than a 2 dozens have confirmed this to date.  Omid couldn't tweet an invention either) starting and since the 1986 Hillsborough disaster. William was 4 years old.

I don?t care if William was a baby or hadn?t yet been born. I have been to Liverpool, and to Manchester and indeed to the North of England several times. The sentiment towards the Royal Family in the north of England has been unenthusiastic for at least fifty years to my knowledge. The Liverpool council is and has been very left wing and will probably continue to be so.

I don?t care if you think that the north west of England is a hotbed of enthusiastic monarchist sentiment, because everything I know about the history of that region says it isn?t.

William is a member of the Establishment, like it or not. And the Hillsborough disaster was and is a stain of corruption on the modern history of Great Britain, just as Aberfan was in the 1960s.

Just as people in the Welsh valleys still remember the authorities like the national Coal Board covering up what they did at Aberfan so people in Liverpool remember Hillsborough and it?s disgraceful coverup by the Establishment afterwards. That is so now as it was in the 1980s, and as I stated in my previous posts it was the reason Liverpool fans booed.

They were booing the Establishment. Of which the Royal Family, including William, is a prime and visible example.

The sentiment is towards centuries of bad treatment by the UK ''government'' (since VD May 8, 1945) who ignored the poor Liverpudlians repeatedly.

Their flags at stadium says ''Scouse not English'', hence they choose not to relate themselves with the English National Anthem.

Industrial decline during Margaret Thatcher

Quote
It led to severe and unemployment and poverty within the city, with the government largely unwilling to aid, and even cutting its public services.

The city had played a key role in World War II, but after the war ended, Liverpool was hit with economic hardship as the trade at their ports ? which were once dominating the industry ? had slowed down.

In 2011, official papers revealed that Margaret Thatcher was indeed secretly urged to consider abandoning Liverpool to a fate of "managed decline".

?In plain English that meant withdrawing resources from the region so that residents would be forced to leave,? states the Independent. ?Effectively starving them out.?

Files released under the 30-year rule showed senior Tory ministers urging her not to spend public money on the "stony ground" of Merseyside, with former prime minister's Chancellor Sir Geoffrey Howe said it would be like "trying to make water flow uphill".

The reports affirmed what those in Liverpool had already been sure of for a while ? that their region did not have the backing of the government, and that it was never a priority.

Liverpool as a city has changed drastically since the 1980s, still retaining its status as a crucial sporting and cultural hub, but its citizens? disregard and resentment towards a government who had never supported them still remains.

Quote
There is also the matter of the handling of the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath.

Former Conservative MP Irvine Patnick had a strong role in spreading the gross untruths and lies about the Liverpool supporters involved in the 1989 tragedy.

While current MP Boris Johnson was editor of The Spectator in 2004, an article written by Simon Heffer spoke of the ?victim? mentality of the people of Liverpool.

"A combination of economic misfortune ? its docks were, fundamentally, on the wrong side of England when Britain entered what is now the European Union ? and an excessive predilection for welfarism have created a peculiar, and deeply unattractive, psyche among many Liverpudlians,? wrote Heffer.

"They see themselves whenever possible as victims, and resent their victim status; yet at the same time they wallow in it.?

He also referred to the grave mishandling of the police as a scapegoat.

Every single time Liverpool plays, this is there way to vent out the GOVERNMENT, yes it's HM Government, but it isn't against the Monarchy.

The monarchy is part of the British Establishment as is the Govt. Also, it wasn?t a politician who was shaking players? hands when the jeering began at this year?s Cup Final. It was a Prince.

And what do you think the English national anthem is that the fans were booing? Oh yes, that?s right, a paean of praise to and about a monarch. Not about the Government, nor the people, not about the land, but about a monarch.

?God Save the Queen?. Not God Save England?, not ?God Save the British Government??. Just ?God Save the Queen?!

I know all about Thatcher?s Britain and the way it impacted on the NW of England and on Wales, thanks. I wrote in a previous post about the industrial decay post WW2.  The Home Counties were fine. I also know all about Hillsborough.

Scousers are what Liverpudlians refer to themselves as. That doesn?t mean they don?t regard themselves as English. They just don?t care for pomposity in anyone, not much time for government officialdom and aren?t fond of the monarchy either.

You can choose to believe that the North of England is full of rejoicing monarchists perpetually waving Union Jacks in their thousands every time a royal person comes into view. Some of my relatives still live in the North East and I?ll take what I?ve seen there over the years as my observations, thanks, and it?s not residents there waving their hankies in delight every time the Queen is seen on the TV.

It?s getting so that relatively few people under 30 even in the Home Counties feels that way any more, actually. The new reign will be interesting!

The poor Queen didn't use her soft powers to influence her Government.  Understandably the Liverpudians (they have the biggest immigrants communities) hate the establishment for all their sufferings.

This is quite an old story. I think I read about it last week. He?s only 17, very cute and lives with his mum and sisters. Others, including Elton John have already sent their support and congratulations.

It?s good that officialdom has come out in support but I hope Jake doesn?t get jeered from the terraces by moronic fans. That?s what happened to rugby players who have come out and to a German soccer player who came out years ago. .

Liverpool has always absorbed large immigrant communities, including thousands fleeing from the Famine years in Ireland. It was a powerhouse of the world in the mid 19th century. And it still has many descendants of those poor Irish people in the city today.

The song ?Oliver?s Army? an Elvis Costello hit spoke of the unemployed youth in the depressed areas of the North of England (Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle etc) being pressed into service with the British army from the 1950s onwards. Ironically many ended up in NI during the Troubles. The title refers to Cromwell whose invading armies attempted some ethnic cleansing and crushing in Ireland, but the British Army in Ireland under many sovereigns didn?t do a bad job itself in that direction, lol!

Incidentally, Liverpool as a port city was knee deep into the Slave trade to the Americas and the West Indies in the 17th, 28th and early 19th centuries. Many of its leading citizens as well as some of the Stuarts made a fortune from it.

We're going in circles here.  Basically let's agree that poor equates to suffering, whilst no solution, being ignored, etc. happened, including their port wasn't used during the WW's because the location was on the wrong side or good only to smuggle with less viewing or good for domestic shipping versus the ones we can all see in this map to Europe and the Americas.

The only way I see it is investing as the Royals have been 'ordered' whenever they visit Liverpool; education and cultural visits.

On the contrary, Liverpool during WW2 was regarded as an extremely important city industrially as was Manchester in both World Wars, hence the German Luftwaffe bombing the area in WW2 only a little less than the infamous London blitz of 1940/41. And that included Merseyside (the Liverpool docks area.)

I don?t know what you mean by Liverpool being ?on the wrong side? (of the ocean I presume?) Well that is incorrect as well, unless you regard imports like sugarcane and fruit from the West Indies to be unimportant, or, even more so, food, arms, ships and material coming into Britain from the US (and Canada from 1939) after 1941 during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Liverpool?s port during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Liverpool | National Museums Liverpool (https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/battle-of-atlantic/liverpool)

?Liverpool was Britain?s main transatlantic convoy port during the war. No less than 1285 convoys arrived in the Mersey during the war, an average of four every week.   Since each one might consist of up to 60 ships, this put a severe strain on the workforce and facilities of the port.

Merseyside?s vast dock labour force played a vital role in clearing ships? cargoes at the port of Liverpool throughout the war. Early problems of slow turnaround (loading and unloading) of ships were mainly due to port congestion and air-raid disruptions. By 1944-1945 all cargoes were being handled in far greater quantities than in peacetime.

Imports to Britain's West coast ports April 1940 - April 1941
Imports to each post in millions of tons, with the percentage of total trade handling by all UK ports (12.9 million tons)

4.2 (31%)* Liverpool and Manchester
1.9 (14.8%) Glasgow and Greenock
0.8 (6.4%) Swansea, Cardfiff and Newport
0.8 (6.4%) Bristol
7.7 (58.6%) Total
From these figures it can be seen that between April 1940 and April 1941 the main west-coast ports handled about 60% of Britain?s imports.  Liverpool and Manchester (31%) together dealt with more than twice the trade of Glasgow and Greenock (14.8%), their nearest ?rivals?.?

Spirit of the Blitz | National Museums Liverpool (https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/whatson/merseyside-maritime-museum/exhibition/spirit-of-blitz)

Liverpool was the most heavily bombed British city outside London. The city was a prime target for attack because, with Birkenhead, its 'twin' across the Mersey, it was the country's biggest west coast port. Every week, ships arrived in the River Mersey bringing supplies of food and other cargoes from the USA and Canada. Without these supplies, Britain would have lost the war.

The German Luftwaffe (Air Force) made about eighty air raids on Merseyside between August 1940 and January 1942. These reached their peak in the seven-night blitz in May 1941.

The bombing was aimed mainly at the docks, railways and factories, but large areas were destroyed or damaged on both sides of the Mersey.?

Note that last sentence, wannabie, as well as the first paragraph from the article.
