Here in our capital, Melbourne, the city fathers were very forward thinking thank heavens and we have botanical gardens, huge parks and a children's farm in the inner city and its centre. Even in our major cities the suburbs, with a single house on a quarter acre block, stretch for miles. Fruit trees, vegs, herbs, flowers, shrubs, whatever you fancy!
London of course developed very differently, from little villages near the Thames and by the time Victorian building speculators had finished there was often just miles and miles of back to back housing, with barely a blade of grass to be seen in some slums. Thank heavens for Epsom Forest, Hampstead Heath and also other little corners like this one. Anything that encourages people to grow fruit and vegs and be in tune with the natural world is terrific as far as I'm concerned, and this garden sounds lovely.
We have a garden at work with herbs in it and non-thirsty Aussie plants. A lizard called Cecil has taken up residence there and is often seen baking in the sun!

Yes, it's a Community Health and Assistance centre. The garden is in a courtyard. There are seats where people can sit and relax, have a bite to eat and drink. It's lovely!

The Opera House is a great patronage for the Duchess.
@Blue Clover - Yes I wouldn't be surprised if QEII hands this patronage to Catherine in the near future.
The Prince of Wales is the Royal Patron of the Royal Opera House (ROH) and the Royal Ballet, the later is also within the umbrella of the ROH. HM QEII would need to request the POW to give up his royal patronage or the later wanting to give it up in favour to the DOC.
I believe Catherine will be a Royal Patron of a Textile related charity, recycling, reusing, something of the sort. One can relate it to environmental issues and how to recycle textiles, it is an environmental issue when fashion houses do not reuse or recycle textiles. Fashion trends is a billion dollar industry, perhaps Catherine will be championing Fashion through returning the textiles to be recycled. Most of the Costume department of the ROH receives not only money donations for the 10,000 yearly costumes, but RECYCLE old textiles to make new costumes (the appeal at their website is 'ongoing', in other words 24/7/365 with the explanation of what costumes/textiles and donate).

Yes this isn't her patronage as it is QEII's and no I don't believe that she's subbing for the Queen today.
@wannable pointed out another organization that might be a possible new one for Catherine. She actually has a family link to textiles through her paternal ancestors, the Lutons.

William is a leader for the Mental Health At Work (MHAW), part of Heads Together, Royal Foundation. I had the opportunity to watch the Mental Health at Work live, I think Prince William did a great job during his interventions and Q&A from the audience. I must add that a lot of the panelists spoke about the very importance of young days/children intervention in Mental Health - this is the area Catherine is projecting past and present.

Um, this thread is not about my conference going habits.
I was speaking of William not being the best choice. And it's my opinion.
Why is he "not the best choice"? He is doing the sort of royal duties you have blamed him previously for not wanting to do, because you seem to be saying that he should have always been doing royal duties, not doing a stint in the army or piloting. And if he's not the best choice, which British royal is an expert on mental health, who could do the job better than he can?
You say that he is not an expert and you would rather listen to experts than to him... but its quite easy to read about and follow psychology experts, if you wold prefer rather than listening to William .
It seems unfair to blame him for wanting a non royal role for a few years and then to blame him when he takes up his royal role

And taking into consideration that this was the World Economic Forum, it wasn't surprising to see government leaders like PM Arden, there along with business leaders as well. The employees' mental health related issues impact productivity if left untreated. Why not have a panel discussion to see how treatment options can be provided for company employees as part of their healthcare benefits.
It means William should not do 'smart' and 'power' events; no Israel/Palestine trip, no Davos. The future POW and King should only pick fluffy events to keep his detractors happy.

The Duchess of Cambridge will make a short speech celebrating the addition of this major new cultural centre for Scotland and the UK, in her role as Patron of V&A. DUNDEE, Scotland (Reuters) - Britain?s Prince William and his wife Kate visited a gleaming new design museum on Tuesday as well as a factory facing closure, and praised Dundee residents for pulling together in difficult times.

They met staff at Dundee?s Michelin factory, an economic mainstay of the Scottish port for 40 years. Workers are trying to reinvent the factory after news late last year that tyre production is to cease.
?When a community faces uncertainty, people feel more optimistic when leaders such as yourselves work together,? William told a group of senior staff at the factory.
William, second in line to the throne, and his younger brother Harry have been changing the once-staid approach of the royal family to public matters with a more candid approach on issues such as mental health and the environment.
?Because of the collaborative approach adopted by the people in this room, I personally am optimistic that a good outcome is possible,? William said. ?You have already reached agreement on developing the site into a manufacturing, recycling and low-carbon transport hub.?
A source at the royal household said the couple wanted to make the important point that those who are facing uncertainty need to be included, not just those responsible for success.
Earlier the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who met while studying at Scotland?s University of St. Andrews, officially opened the Victoria & Albert Dundee, an eye-catching design museum which looks like the bow of a ship, on the mouth of the River Tay.
They drew a large crowd outside the building?s angled structure despite the chill of the riverside in winter.
Kate, a patron of the V&A Museum, wore a green Alexander McQueen tartan coat dress while William wore a blue suit alongside her.
Kate said she was ?captivated by the breath-taking architecture and the sheer range of design on display? at the first offshoot of the Victoria and Albert Museum outside London.
El Bulli to reopen for research, not for dinner
Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, currently designing Tokyo?s 2020 Olympic stadium, configured the building to resemble two hulls side by side, in a nod to the port?s shipbuilding history.
The museum houses treasures such as a salvaged tearoom designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and a tiara of rose-cut diamonds with a pair of wings which tremble slightly when worn.
?I hope that this museum will serve as an inspiration to others, by showing how great things can be achieved when different communities all pull together,? Kate said.
The couple?s words about working together echoed those of William?s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who urged divided lawmakers earlier this month to seek common ground over Britain?s impending exit from the European Union.

In Fermanagh The Duke and Duchess will see the incredible work that the charity Extern is doing at their Roscor Youth Village, which is a residential activity centre for children referred to the charity by social workers or the Department of Justice. The site provides a safe space to help and support these young people, with particular emphasis on outdoor activities and developing independent living skills.
Ending the day back in Belfast at the iconic Empire Music Hall, Their Royal Highnesses will attend a party celebrating young people who are making a real difference in Northern Ireland. The band LARKS will take to the stage, and guests will encompass representatives from Northern Ireland?s business, arts and sport sectors, including Dame Mary Peters who was today appointed Lady Companion of the Most Noble of the Garter by Her Majesty The Queen.

On day two of their visit to Northern Ireland The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend the day in Ballymena, meeting with organisations that are working to create a bright future for the next generation. Their Royal Highnesses will begin the day by meeting privately with officers and staff from the Police Service in Northern Ireland to hear about the unique challenges they face.
At the Braid Arts Centre Their Royal Highnesses will visit the charity Cinemagic, who have used film, television and digital technologies to engage with over 500,000 young people. The charity uses visual arts to increase opportunities and develop skills for young people from all backgrounds. The Duke and Duchess will take part in some of Cinemagic?s workshops to see the full range of training they provide.
Their final engagement of the day will be at Sure Start, a programme that supports parents with children aged under four years old living in disadvantaged areas in Northern Ireland. Their Royal Highnesses will see some of the different programmes that Sure Start provides to understand how the organisation supports parents and provides best practice for early years work.

I can remember a very rainy weekend in Blackpool with friends when I was a teenager. However, unlike several other seaside resorts then and now, there's always plenty to do in Blackpool whatever the weather and the time of year. It's a very cheerful place.
I wish it weren't raining, so the RR and RP can showcase more of Blackpool, it sounds like an interesting place.

The Cambridges visit a former B & B that has been purchased by the Blackpool Council. The former B & B was being rented out by its former owners and was in a terrible state. :no: Before the couple could visit, the floor had to be reinforced.

Blackpool Council has recently bought the house from the previous owners and now intends to renovate it and let it to new tenants.

This and the NI visit were, imo, what they do well. Hope they will be scheduled more visits to different areas in the UK, especially outside of London.

This is good news for Kate.
I like that Kate and William took on a difficult social issue. William had been open about mental illness and now he's addressing "slum lords" this is nice to see, and makes the duties of being royal more real and shows it isn't all ribbon-cutting.

Fighting slumlords is very complicated and difficult, but he is in an ideal position to make a real difference. Of course, some of them will play the victim, but pictures just don't lie. If you can't control the way your tenants treat your building you probably should not be a landlord.

In North Wales, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will first visit the Caernarfon Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter Base.
Until 2015, search and rescue operated out of RAF Valley on Anglesey, where The Duke worked as an RAF search and rescue pilot between 2010-2013.
From Caernarfon, Their Royal Highnesses will travel to Anglesey to visit Halen M?n Anglesey Sea Salt, a thriving local business which has been operating for over two decades, and won @TheQueensAwardsfor Sustainability in 2017.

We have been celebrating Anzac Day here of course with Dawn Services throughout the country. It's become a tradition over the past twenty years for loads of young Australians to gather at Anzac Cove Galipolli and stay there overnight for the big Dawn Service. There has been an arrest of a terrorist this year who planned an act of terrorism at this service or before it. Fortunately he was not able to go ahead.
Nice to see that Harry was able to join Catherine and Richard (Gloucester) today for the service. Understandably his presence was not announced ahead of time. BTW does anyone know which order Harry is wearing around his neck? Would it be the Spanish one? I saw pictures of the various services in NZ, Australia, Thailand, and Gallipoli. It's wonderful that people continue to honor the bravery and tragedy of Gallipoli. Grateful the terrorist was unable to do an awful thing on such a day...and the fact that he (I assume it was a he since it always has been before) even planned it is a tragedy in itself. I hope they caught him.

I'm going to predict Catherine will win a award by the RHS Judges with a Gold Medal, top 3, If not mistaken this is a first by concept/idea of a garden to actually go inside and enjoy rather than look from afar/sidewalk and see, which to date is basically what it has been, no walkway to see inside each garden that is competing.
Other BRF awards: 2009 Prince Charles garden was awarded the Queen's award, 2015 Prince Harry was awarded internet vote People's Choice, silver medal.

I watched a short video of Harry's parents and grandparents when they came to see Harry's garden. He was so excited to have them there, and he was excited about the garden, too. But the amazing thing is that the royals were so busy greeting him and seeing the garden they appeared not to notice the camera; you saw the POW greeting both of his parents with affection, Harry greeting them all with affection - non of it "put on" and you could hear the DofE joking that he should have put part of his father's stumpery into the garden. They were all laughing and having a great time. Just a bit of a glimpse of family interaction.
#RHSChelseaFlowerShow officially begins tomorrow, but the Queen & members of Royal Family will attend the preview day tonight.
We aren?t usually told ahead of time who will be attending, but the Queen, Duchess Kate & Princess Alexandra are confirmed.

Catherine's garden won a Trust award (13 charities competing for this award, which will take her garden to 4 other locations in the UK).
On another note the CAMFED won a Gold Medal, they are extraofficially supported by the Sussex's.
In an article today Camfed cleared the air in relation to an old picture of Harry they wanted to use, but didn't at the end.

Yes, I think you are right. If she won her detractors would say she only won because of who she is, and if she lost she would be criticized because she lost. Because of that, I'm wondering if it is a policy for members of the RF to refrain from entering competitions.

Originally conceived in Japan 40 years ago as a means to combat workplace burnout, the movement has quietly attracted a growing following in the UK.
It was brought to prominence last month, however, when it was revealed the Duchess had based her debut garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, called RHS Back to Nature, on the idea.
Translated from the Japanese Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing involves forgetting day-to-day concerns in favour of absorbing the sensations of a woodland setting through the five senses.
It is now practised by more than five million Japanese people and has prompted a number of scientific studies which appear to prove its beneficial effects.
NHS bosses are currently pushing a campaign for ?social prescribing?, whereby GPs try to prevent illness, or treat it in the early stages, by linking patients with activities that boost health and wellbeing, such as rambling or singing in a choir.
Stuart Dainton, head of innovation at the Woodland Trust, said all family doctors should have the knowledge to point patients towards the nearest suitable woodland where they can absorb nature, informally or as part of a structured programme.
He appealed to GPs to make use of the Trust?s more than 1,000 UK sites.
?Social prescribing through aspects of Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, I think is a route to helping the nation destress,? he said.
?It?s about invigorating the senses by walking in the woods, smelling, listening to the sounds of the woods, touching the ground.
?We?re almost losing that as a society.?
He added that forest bathing should also be encouraged for children to help fight the ?always on? culture prompted by social media.
A growing number of companies have begun offering structured forest bathing, lasting anywhere in length between one or two hours to eight-day residential trips.
Meanwhile the Forestry Commission, the largest owner of wooded land, has announced plans to launch a nationwide forest bathing programme and now offers a printable guide on its website, which includes tips on how to breath correctly.
Wounded and traumatised military personnel are among the groups who have practised the activity.
Faith Douglas, a forest bathing ?practitioner? who has led such groups, said: ?It reduces stress levels, reduces heart rate, reduces your blood pressure.
?The knock on it that it boosts your immunity and it enhances your quality of life.
?It?s been out there for years - this is something our ancestors did, this is something that cultures do all over the planet ? it?s simply being mindful in a natural environment.?

I totally agree. And it's so important that the young royals are taking part in honoring them. The young are further and further away time-wise and many of them just don't care, but if they see their contemporaries marking the occasion, perhaps they will understand how important it is. . We had our parents and grandparents who kept it alive for us, but that generation is fading fast.

He must have requested/notified/approved his grand mother that he would ''read'' the entire speech of his great grand father...a PR Genius from William (or very likely Dr. Simon Case, actual private secretary to the DOC, previously executive director to the GCHQ*now I know where and how William got his 1 month at the GCHQ and M16, previously private secretary to Cameron and later May, all this and he is only 40). D Day Veteran Victor Blunt asked Prince William why he was down on one knee in front of him. He more or less joked that typically it was the other way round with most on "one knee" to royals. William replies "Not to you guys." (Referring to D Day Veterans.)
I hope that if your travels take you to France, that you will be able to visit the Normandy beaches and the cemeteries. There are incredible museums and displays which can provide one with the visual and even some audio regarding the D Day landings, but would pale in comparison to what these young men faced on that day.

Yes I thought it was 2 weeks but it is only 5 days. So I would say 9 visits is relaly a lot, if it wasn't something that clearly interests her and the kids very much, she would probably have made 1 visit.....

Yes, and I think she's very committed to the message. I understand she will be re-creating the garden or creating a similar garden for other shows this year. It has raised the dialog about the value of enjoying the natural environment as a part of good mental and physical health. Her interests and commitments are certainly clear.

It's good that we realize it and appreciate that we still have them. I love to hear them speak and enjoy the deserved attention they are receiving. Were it not for them who knows what life would be like now.
They are right - we do owe them everything. And what it must have been like to muster up the spirit after five years of hell on earth, I just can't imagine. And we can't forget that WWI was only two decades in the past. How weary they all must have been. I was so touched hearing the speech and thought that the Prince repeating his great grandfather's words at such a time of hope and stress must have had a bigger impact than anything else he could have said.

I come from Ireland and when I was a kid, the summer holidays were quite long.. but we only had abut a week for Chirstmas and Easter. In england, the summer holiday is only abuot 6 weeks, July to September. I think they get a bit longer for easter and Chrirstmas.

The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex will take part in the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day at Billingbear Polo Club on Wednesday 10th July. The match will raise funds for charities supported by Their Royal Highnesses.
Great way to raise money, but what amazes me is that they can ride so well when they don't get constant practice in the saddle! Here they are in a rugged sport where 80% of the time they are in the two-point position, which is so hard on the legs and back. They MUST have some practice time on a regular basis, but we never hear of it.
I believe that Charles and then his sons belong(ed) to the Royal Berkshire polo club near London. It's private and very exclusive and William and Harry probably practise there when they can. Harry apparently intends that his son will play polo in the future as he's spoken of it when he was presented with the minature mallet for Archie when he was in Rome playing recently.

Why would they "get drawn into an alleged feud!"? Its just much more likely that as Harry and Meg live in Windsor, their children will go to a different nursery school at first..adn wil make their friends locally or iwht the children of H and M's friends...
They will probably meet at times - but as Harry has settled at Windsor, he's not going ot be on the doorstep near to Will and K and their kids..

I don't know if there is a major row.. but I don't think they are the best of friends. I think perhaps that K and Meg are very different.. and there has been a bit of tenstion between them.. it is not a spontaneous friendship such as tehre was fro a time between Sarah and Diana.
It will be awesome if Prince Louis, Master Archie and Arthur Mathews (Pippa's baby boy) get to be BFF's.

I don't think they are great buddies but probably extend courtesies that sisters in law share.

from the pics i saw louis was sticking his tongue and kate was laughing at him and meghan didnt appear to be laughing.
there are no pics of kate and meghan interacting with each other. or meghan interacting with kate's kids. no surprise imo

The series of photograph do not record every single second. Kate and Meghan are not exactly going to frolic together at Polo giggling and laughing. They children were there and probably the nannies. Little George was standing next to his Aunt, certainly words were exchanged.
I don't think Meghan is a pariah and the sisters in law were there to support their husbands.
And did Kate interact with Archie, coo at him, look at Harry and Meghan's baby, because I didn't see anything of the kind. Interacting isn't a one way street.
Yes, Kate didnt interact with Archie and Meghan didnt interact with kate's kids. Even when they were photograhed physically close enough there werent any interactions. No surprise imo
Not really... I think that Meg was probably nervous and worried, first time she was seen out with the baby.. and tyring to look after him... and Kate was with her 3 who were running around. They were problaby busy enough with their children to not have time to chat much or look at the other's children
So why was Meghan seen showing archie to a friend and talking to a couple?

btw i've seen several times women holding their baby while talking to other people as well as mothers with young kids and or toddlers talking and laughing with mothers holding a baby.
It was her frist outing with the baby. I thought she looked a bit awkward holidng him (not that Im blaming her for that I hasten to add) .and she probably talked to anyone who talked to her.. but Kate was busy with her kids...
Kate and MEghan have nannies. I think they were off camera watching those children.

@amabel. Besides I doubt that we saw the entire visit via a few photos. The vast majority of new parents are nervous and focused when it's the first time out for baby. Personally I would have had a hat on Archie as he is too young for sunscreen unlike his cousins but Meghan kept him in the shade. Catherine had to keep a closer eye on a more mobile Louis but her older kids were fine playing nearby.
Louis is not that old and everybody should wear hats and wear sunscreen even the adults.

I thought that Meg would look after the baby herself while on materity leave? BUt I seem to remember a story that they had had 3 nannies in a few weeks... so I wonder which it is..

Babies can begin to wear sunscreen at six months so Louis would be well protected like his siblings if he's wearing it. Toddlers are well known for removing hats, socks, etc.. so sunscreen is protection that is less easily dispensed with.😁 Also like Archie he was mostly photographed in the shade so he would be fine.😊

Royals do have nannies. It's their way of life. If Kate and the other royal mothers hire nannies, I don't see any reason why Meghan shouldn't.
When George was a newborn baby was hired William's former nanny to help kate and carole with george...
The Sussexes just like the Cambridges, Wessexes, Yorks, Wales and reigning royals around the world will have to have a nanny at some point. :shrug: If she/he was helping Meghan out at the polo match, that seems reasonable especially if they're still in the "getting to know you stage."

It has been said that they have had 2 or 3 differnet nannies in the past 2 months.. so I assume that they have decided to have some kind of nanny helping out while Meg is on Mat Leave.. But I am a bit surprised given their penchant for saying that they are doing things "their way".. not necessarily the traditional royal way. As Meg is on leave, ther's no need for her to go to events like Trooping the Colour or film premieres so wy not enjoy the time at home with Archie...
Archie is about ten weeks old now. Since his birth Meghan has been to his christening,Trooping, one polo event (with baby,) and one film premiere, so I hardly think she, or Harry, is painting the town red and leaving their baby at home. Here in Australia our Kaolas have their babies clinging to their backs 24/7 but it's a bit different for humans! The Sussexes have probably spent hours and hours each day bonding with Archie since he's been born. Surely they're allowed some time as a young married couple?

CHarles says there is. He made it clear that his two sons and their wives are expected to work. He does not want the York girls to work. He wants his sons and daughters in law. Why would she be barred from working when she is part of Charles' vision of a scaled down royal family?

Louis was born in late April last year and Kate was on maternity leave until nearly October. However she broke into her maternity leave on occasion. She attended Harry's wedding in May, Trooping, and also the service for the RAF 100th anniversary in July. Kate didn't need to come out of seclusion with her baby but did. So what's wrong with Meghan coming out occasionally? Her leave is nearly over anyway.

I never expected Meghan to be present at anything associated with the State Visit but was not surprised to see her at Trooping the Color as Archie could be safely ensconced at BP with a nanny or staff member.
Like Catherine did with her maternity leaves, Meghan is occasionally appearing in public but as expected it's a surprise like the baseball game or on short notice like the movie premiere.
The Windsors like many of their European counterparts are either on vacation or will be starting their holidays in the coming weeks like the rest of their respective countries. I wouldn't expect to see many engagements until the end of August in any European royal family so for Meghan to delay her return until October makes sense IMHO. :Jen: :windsor1: The Belgians just held their National Day celebrations today, but there isn't as many dates penciled in on anyone's calendar now. Unless there is political business that requires the reigning HoS's attention, things will be quiet. Obviously QEII is delaying her Balmoral visit until the new PM is announced. :Jen:

Depends what you mean by 'learn'. Both brothers were taught the fundamentals on bikes when they were quite young, learning to hit the ball while cycling and how to manoeuvre swiftly. That was how Charles himself had been instructed by Prince Philip in his boyhood and how his sons were taught when they were still quite young.
However William is a little over two years older than Harry and so he naturally went for professional lessons first at the local Polo Club and began playing first. Harry was familiar with local Polo Clubs from his mid-teens though. I've seen photos years ago of him socialising with friends there from his late teens.
