Celebrations for Crown Prince Frederik?s 50th birthday announced ? Royal Central (http://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/celebrations-for-crown-prince-frederiks-50th-birthday-announced-100293)
As someone on another forum stated, it's a bit ironical that there seems to be a ten day celebration of Fred's 50th birthday by the Royal House and yet he has performed less than ten public engagements in this month.
I know little Denmark doesn't demand a great deal of its royal family but I can't help musing that if the Queen had decided on days and days of private celebrations with her family and friends for her 50th the British newspapers, even in those far more deferential days, would have been beside themselves and there would have been hell to pay.
You have a point. The Danes do like their celebrations. I personally found the multitude of banquets and parties for Marguerites' 75th a bit much. Maybe because it is such a popular and old monarchy, they can get away with it. Plus they do not have the rapid tabloids like in the UK.

QuoteBelow is a list of those royals who have, so far, announced their attendance. The list will be updated when and if other royals reveal who they are sending.
Luxembourg: Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa
Norway: Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit
Sweden: King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel
Will the BRF be sending anyone to even part of this ten day celebration of Fred's 50th birthday? Answer: Probably not! Same old story.
More's the pity. The European royals bend forwards and backwards to attend British events but it is never reciprocated. I can understand QEII and DOE now that they are old. Perhaps even Charles because he is busy and his current wife hates flying but surely W, H, M and C could visit. When they really must go, they send Edward and Sophie which is pretty much equal to a snub since they are so far down the line of succession it seems like an oversight.
Edward and Sophie are the usual guests/representatives at the continental events, but I don't see anything yet about either of them attending anything. Both have a reception at BP in 5/24. British monarchy site is not showing anything for them being in Copenhagen.
Sophie did attend Harald and Sonja's 80th birthday celebrations, so it is possible that she's the designated guest if they send someone.
I'd be surprised if the Dutch and Belgians do not attend. Spain's attendance seems to depend upon the "nation's mood." Things seem rather unsettled IMO and both have events for the 26th as noted in the article.

The Danish RF really love commissioning portraits of themselves. There have been group affairs featuring the whole family with an artist who adopted a 'Children of the Corn' style, ones of Henrik, Daisy, and Christian by themselves and now some new portraits showing Fred and Mary. Daisy probably thought 'I'll have a portrait painted of my son for this monumental birthday and throw my daughter in law into the mix as well. Original thought!
@Curryong-Just don't select that "Flowers in the Attic" or "Children of the Corn" artist!! :P
BTW Belgians and Dutch have confirmed their attendance at the birthday celebrations. No word on a BRF attendee.
I would carefully avoid that particular artist TLLK under all circumstances, :D but seriously, Daisy and her family have a positive mania for seeing themselves immortalised on canvas. I wonder whether it's Henri's influence!

Prince Frederik and Princess Mary met 20 years ago at the Slip Inn during the 2000 Sydney Olympics | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8738339/Prince-Frederik-Princess-Mary-met-20-years-ago-Slip-Inn-2000-Sydney-Olympics.html)
Wow! It's been 20 years since this couple met in 2000 and later married in 2004. For those who are not familiar with their story, the condensed version is that they met at a pub in Sydney. CP Frederik was there with other royals: then Prince Felipe of Spain, CP Haakon and his sister Martha Louise of Norway and Prince Nikkos of Greece (cousin to both Frederik and Felipe). Mary was there with friends and the pair began talking and then going out. The pair corresponded throughout their early years of dating with a few long visits to reconnect. Late Mary moved to France and then Denmark before they announced their engagement.
It is nice to learn that Mary included Australian snow gum eucalyptus in her bridal bouquet. :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
She has certainly made the transition - she just seems so Danish now. And what a lovely family they have!
I admire how she learned a notoriously difficult language to pick up as an adult. :)
Did Mary take Danish lessons in both Australia and Denmark?
Danish is apparently a very difficult language and now Mary is completely at home in it. A few years ago I met some Danes who giggled a bit about her mastery of the language, as far as grammar is concerned, but I noticed when she gave a speech in honour of Frederik a couple of years ago how at home she was. A workmate has a son who settled in Norway fifteen years ago, having married a Norwegian girl, and he has an accent in English too, something his relatives find hilarious. Inevitable, I suppose.
I thought that she got some flak from Danes for her accent or not being that good at Danish....
Yes, she did in the early years. But after all Mary has been living in Denmark for many years now.

Like
@Curryong said she did receive some criticism for her accent and pronunciation, but it has lessened over time. Likewise Maxima, Marie, Mathilde, Paola, Silvia, Maria Teresa who all learned a second, third or fourth language as adults will likely never fully achieve native accent and pronunciation but most seem comfortable with speaking a primary language in their respective nations.

Yes, especially when there were so many other demands on her time....learning new patronages, starting a family, royal engagements....etc
With regard to actually learning the language though, didn't Mary go to Denmark and live and work for a while there before she and Fred became engaged? Although I agree that the best time to learn any foreign language is in childhood or teen years, it's also helpful to actually live in the country and learn how to negotiate daily life, everything from dentist appointments to food shopping, going to the hairdressers, ordering a take away lunch, buying bus tickets etc etc. In my view that's a hundred times better than sitting with a tutor being instructed in a language.
@Curryong-Yes she did go there prior to their engagement announcement so it did give her an opportunity to start learning Danish. Former sister-in-law Alexandra had a bit of a head start when it came to learning Danish as she was already a fluent German speaker and there's some similarities in sounds.
They have managed to keep their relationship together! Twenty years and four children later I think Mary was up for the job and has performed very well.

My God!! It doesn't seem more than five minutes since he was a baby being christened!
I'd forgotten that both Christian and Leonor were born in the same year. Which makes sense when you consider that their respective parents married within a couple of months of each other. Very handsome photos of Prince Christian who IMO favors his mother.
Yes I agree. I think both Christian and his sister Izzy resemble Mary. Izzy is very pretty. I got quite a shock when I saw the recent photos about how much darker Christian's hair is now to when he was younger. I wonder who he will end up marrying? Almost certainly a commoner but part of me does want at least one wedding of the younger generation of European and Scandi royals to have a prince and princess fall in love. The Belgian, Spanish, Netherlands families have young daughters in their ranks!
Prince Christian of Denmark tests positive for COVID-19 ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/prince-christian-of-denmark-tests-positive-for-covid-19-153241/)- Apparently there was an outbreak at his school. The family has gone into isolation at the Frederik VIII palace.
QuotePrince Christian of Denmark, second in line to the Danish throne, has tested positive for COVID-19.
His parents, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, received news of a local outbreak of COVID-19 at the Traneg?rdskolen in Hellerup, which Prince Christian attends, last Sunday and he subsequently underwent a test.
Prince Christian is currently in isolation at Frederik VIII?s Palace at Amalienborg. He has not been in contact with other members of the royal recently, apart from his parents and siblings. The Danish Royal House has been advised by the Danish Agency for Patient Safety to also be tested. The entire family will stay in isolation in Frederik VIII?s Palace until cleared to break isolation according to the current guidelines.

This unfortunately means that the immediate family from France, Great Britain and Australia will not be present on the day either. That?s too bad. I am quite intrigued by this confirmation tradition. I was confirmed in the Anglican Church at age 12. There were some lessons then there were a group of 15 of us confirmed in a ceremony. But not the big deal that IA and now Christian are having.

In the Danish Church was Prince Christian required to choose a Confirmation name?

In the Danish Church was Prince Christian required to choose a Confirmation name?
No, in the Lutheran Church, as in most Protestant Churches (all as far as I know) individuals are not given the names of Saints to intercede for them. Dialogue and prayer is between the person and God, Jesus etc. Therefore Christian?s names remain the same.
I can not say for other churches but in the Anglican Church you certainly don?t get a confirmation name. However, if I did, I think I would have chosen St Zita, Patron saint of lost keys.
St Uncumber, an image of which is still around in a church in my home county of Norfolk, was a strange one, and stories about her have always amused me. Horrified at being betrothed to a man by her father when she didn?t wish to ever marry, Uncumber prayed to God to inflict her with something which would make her repulsive to her fianc?. The next morning she woke up with a full beard, and that did the trick!
She was the Patron Saint of women who wished to be rid of their husbands who may have been cruel or abusive. Or maybe who they were just fed up with!
This Saint had a reliquary in Westminster Abbey in medieval times, with a manger next to it, which it was said was always overflowing with donations of grain. The Church asked for such offerings from the women who would come and pray at the spot. There was even a verse. ?If your husband you would disencumber/ Just say a prayer to St Uncumber.?
https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/weird-norfolk-st-uncumber-at-st-mary-s-church-worstead-1124064
A beard would do it.
I read that the kids get some significant gifts, often cash. I remember reading some of the stuff IA got last year when she was confirmed.
They have a name for it when the kids stream into the town this time of year with the cash in hand to spread. They have issues with an increase in robberies, too, as they know the kids are coming.
Found it : It is also a Danish Confirmation Tradition that the Monday after the Confirmation all the young people "konfirmanter" have the day off from school and usually get together and go on a shopping spree.
That Monday is called "Blue Monday". Danish Confirmation Traditions. (https://www.denmark-getaway.com/danish-confirmation-traditions.html)
A little history on Blue Monday The day after your confirmation is known as Blue Monday (Bl? Mandag) where the newly confirmed teenagers enjoy a day of fun with their friends after the solemn family occasion the day before. They go shopping, to the cinema or to Tivoli or Bakken. Some schools give this as day off but not all.
The idea of Blue Monday goes back a long way. In Denmark, the confirmation was originally intended solely as a religious festival. But already by the 1700s, young people from the Copenhagen bourgeoisie met in the King?s Garden at Rosenborg Castle to show their gifts at the time of the few who could afford things like a cigarette case, a parasol or other grown up things. Blue Monday was in fact an important day because it was the first day you even owned some of the things that belonged to adulthood. In today?s society that could be a new iPhone. Lowdown on the Danish Confirmation season ? Dejlige Days (https://dejligedays.com/2019/03/18/lowdown-on-the-danish-confirmation-season/)
Confirmation and it?s aftermath certainly seems to be an extremely important watershed in young Danes? lives in a way that doesn?t impact in the same way in other Protestant Churches. I was confirmed into the Anglican Church at just fourteen and had a special white silk dress and veil for the occasion. The main thing I can remember about it now, though, is sitting in Lincoln Cathedral waiting for the Bishop to bless us all, and looking down from my pew and seeing dozens of other little girls in pews, dressed similarly to me.
It certainly didn?t have the sort of impact Scandinavian Confirmation Days have, a combination of extended family gathering a la Thanksgiving, followed by gifts similar to birthdays only buy your own! Then shopping and after-parties.
Do you have Schoolies Week in Canada, as we do in Australia and happens in the US? A kind of conscious celebration of the end of one phase of a young person?s life ending and another starting. Confirmations in Scandinavia seem to have that sort of a feeling afterwards as well.
No, nothing like that in Canada. At least not in my experience. Canada is very multi cultural and so there may be events like that.
My confirmation was age 13. I wore the most hideous pink dress and two bunched up ponytails on either side of my head - ugly duckling stage for sure. But my grandfather was so proud of me and I cherish that photo. He died just months later.
It was at a small local church and there were 15 or so of us. It must have been amazing at Lincoln Cathedral!
A special memory from my childhood and church - I was the server from age 10-14. I got to wear a white robe and carry the cross. I helped with setting up for mass and carried the plate of bread. Our minister called me his Serviette.
Your confirmation, in the pink dress, must have been a bit like Christian?s though. Just loved and ones important for you there, though Covid iof course impacted on his foreign grandparents and godparents swelling the numbers. So you were allowed to wear pink. Interesting. I wouldn?t have minded pink. White washes me out!
To be a server must have been so special. Especially carrying the cross. So long as nobody wiped their mouths on your white robe after eating, you would have been fine!
Nope...I had to change out of my robe before going down for the tea. And most of the congregation were old so I could outrun them.
Now this was 1980 so I don?t know what they do now. The church my parents go to is small and the youngest person is 68. The Anglican Church is dying in Canada.
I think that Churches are dying everywhere, except perhaps in the US. The Anglican Church has been fading away for decades in the UK and in Australia. Not that Aussies are or were a particularly religious people anyway.
iview (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-06/annabel-crabb-australia-talks-religion-insights/11674076)
Religious views came stone motherless last among seven points, political views (which came in at no 1 spot) gender, nationality and so on in this survey! And most regarded the religious as ?God-botherers and didn?t want to hear about it!
Any idea what the church attendance is like in Denmark? From those articles I was reading about Blue Monday, it was stated that confirmation is a rite of passage and that many aren?t religious. Like Christmas for many.
I used to have Danish-Australian friends but they moved and we lost touch. I got the impression that, like the UK, Canada, Western Europe and here in Australia/NZ, Danish society is pretty secular. The did talk about going to church (they were Lutheran) at Xmas and sometimes at Easter. The rest seems to have been the usual, like other places, weddings, christenings, some funerals, that sort of thing. The big standout there seems to be confirmations, with parties afterwards. The US seems to be the exception in its churchgoing.

@Curryong thank you for sharing the article about the importance of Confirmation in Danish society. I know that Germany has a similar tradition which can be either religious or secular in nature. It's seen as a rite of passage for teens around the same age.
Seems odd to me to use religious rites in this way. If kids want to go out and buy things as "adults" have a "kids spending day" not a confirmation.

Thank you @Marcrobug67 and
@Curryong for sharing info about the Anglican confirmation.
As a Roman Catholic, I did choose a Saint's name for Confirmation as did my kids at their's. It was amusing to hear the same Saints' names pop up during the ceremony for the Confirmation class with some Saints being more "popular" than others. My husband who was never confirmed, kept wondering why the Bishop was referring to the kids as "Saint _____."

You?re welcome TLLK. I suppose German Lutheranism shares many roots with the Scandinavian Church so I guess it is natural that some of their celebrations have something in common.
The DRF are quite informal much of the time. I saw elsewhere young Izzy (looking quite grown up) being a bit sassy with her mother in a little clip where she was about to accompany her grandmother up the church steps, but Mary laughed it off! Teenagers!
Which Saint?s name was the most popular in your kids? confirmation class, TLLK? St Bernadette?

Crown Prince Frederik?s IOC decision sparks new rumours of abdication ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/crown-prince-frederiks-ioc-decision-sparks-new-rumours-of-abdication-161547/)
QuoteCrown Prince Frederik of Denmark announced that he would resign as an active member of the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday. The news came as a surprise for most of the media, and many have now reacted to the international press coverage of this news. Several non-Danish magazines and newspaper claim that a Danish abdication is in the near future.
While Crown Prince Frederik explained in the press release that he made the decision to be able to concentrate even more on his work on other important issues, including Denmark?s position as one of the world?s leading nations in the green agenda, sustainability and innovation, the Spanish magazine Vanitatis has another explanation. According to the magazine, the Crown Prince?s decision is just one of several in the Royal Family that contribute to renewed rumours that Queen Margrethe may want to abdicate.
Unfortunately frequently when an adult heir leaves one position to pick up another, it does seem to spark rumors of abdication. While Denmark does not have an established tradition of abdication like the Netherlands or Luxembourg, CP Frederik's former peers in the other nations like Spain, Belgium are now the monarchs as their parent abdicated.

Denmark?s Crown Prince and Princess mark National Flag Day ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/denmarks-crown-prince-and-princess-mark-national-flag-day-165106/)
QuoteOn Sunday, the 5th of September 2021, Denmark celebrated its Flag Day, a national holiday designed to honour those who have been sent out on missions (including the Armed Forces and medical personnel ) as well as their families.
To mark the day, the Crown Prince Couple has carried out a series of engagements.
They started by laying wreaths at the Monument to Denmark?s International Effort in Kastellet, Copenhagen, during which the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister for Defense gave speeches, before the traditional anthem,, ?In Denmark I was born?, was played.
After that, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary took part in a church service at Holmens Kirke to commemorate all the soldiers Denmark has lost through the years. The service was also attended by soldiers of units that have been deployed over the last two years.
Finally, as a last event, the Crown Prince Couple moved on to Christiansborg Palace Square, where, to the tune of his own personal march, Crown Prince Frederik inspected a parade force made of about 1200 soldiers.
Flag Day in Denmark has officially been celebrated since 2009, when the nation decided to create a Day, which was chosen as September 5th, to honour troops who are currently deployed or have been in the past, and all those who have died in the line of duty.

QuoteWhen His Royal Highness the Crown Prince opens the Northern Lights Festival tomorrow at the National Museum in Copenhagen, it is as patron of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 5th Thule expedition, which was initiated by polar researcher Knud Rasmussen in 1921. The Crown Prince has agreed to be the patron of the entire anniversary, which lasts until 2024.
In the Greenlandic travel magazine Suluk, you can read a new interview this month, where His Royal Highness on the occasion of the anniversary years tells about Knud Rasmussen and tells about his own Greenland expedition 21 years ago:
?It was for me, who had never entered that part of Greenland before, a huge moment that I appreciate even more over the years. The further away I get from it, the more fun it is to reread my diaries, and it is of course also interesting in this context to look into some of Knud Rasmussen's books and study his stories ?.
The pictures of the Crown Prince were taken in Knud Rasmussen's House in Hundested. Knud Rasmussen's expedition was an 18,000 kilometer long sleigh ride through the Arctic landscape, from Greenland across Arctic Canada, along the north coast of Alaska to the Bering Strait and eastern Siberia. The purpose of the expedition, which lasted for three years (1921-1924), was to gather new knowledge about Arctic cultures.

QuoteTo the press, Crown Prince Frederik said: ?I always make sure to have an ongoing renewal and inquire about who may have their hunting licenses. It is exciting for people to be part of such a great hunt here. It is good to be back outside and have a good nature experience together in West Jutland. It is something that is very important to me to have the opportunity to bring people who know the area better than me, who also go hunting, to bring them together. And enjoy each other?s company. There are lots of animals out in the woods, and it is also important to regulate so that there are not too many animals out in the woods?.
The royal hunts are the Danish Royal Houses? official hunts, which take place during the hunting season from 1 October to mid-January in the Danish state forests. Traditionally, a number of representatives from the region, the municipality, the business community and regional chairmen of the Danish Hunters ?Association participate in the hunts, for which His Royal Highness has been the patron since 2019. The association`s aims to take care of the members? interests in hunting and nature. In addition, private friends of Crown Prince Frederik also participated.

Crown Princess Mary?s big birthday to feature big celebrations ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/crown-princess-marys-big-birthday-to-feature-big-celebrations-169260/)
QuoteA gala dinner and major exhibitions on the story of how a girl from Tasmania became a queen in waiting are planned to mark the 50th birthday of Crown Princess Mary.
Mary marks her half century on February 5th 2022 and the Danish Royal Court has now announced a series of special events that month to celebrate.
As January comes to an end, the Crown Princess will be guest of honour at a special celebration for the Mary Foundation, the organisation she set up to support those experiencing social isolation. Established in 2007, using funds presented to the Crown Prince and Princess following their wedding in 2004, the Foundation has developed an international reputation for helping some of the most disadvantaged in society. On January 27th, its partners will join it in celebrating Mary?s 50th birthday.
Just a few days later, the Crown Princess will open a new exhibition at Koldinghus focused on her life and her part in the royal history of Denmark. ?Mary and the Crown Princesses? will detail her own experiences as well as how she and others have developed the role of Crown Princess.
On February 3rd 2022, Mary will open another exhibition at Frederiksborg Castle, celebrating her life and achievements. Called ?HRH Crown Princess Mary 1972 ? 2022?, it includes photos, personal items and outfits. A brand new portrait of the Crown Princess will also be unveiled at the opening.
On the eve of her 50th birthday, a special gala dinner will be held at Rosenborg Castle. Queen Margrethe will host royal guests and representatives from across Denmark at a celebration for Mary.
A new book will be published about the Crown Princess in 2022. :Jen:

Mary ? HRH The Crown Princess (in Danish: Mary ? HKH) will be released on 31 January by Danish publisher Politikens Forlag as a photographic book featuring work by Danish and international photographers. According to the publisher, these photographers will ?give a rare insight into [Crown Princess Mary?s] official as well as private life as a royal, spouse, mother, patron of a number of Danish and international landmarks, keynote speaker in Denmark and abroad, sportswoman, amateur photographer and fashion icon.?
This new book will also feature remembrances from Crown Princess Mary about royal moments of significance in her life. A special chapter focusing on 2004, the year she married Crown Prince Frederik, will share never-before-seen pictures of their wedding day.
According to the publisher notes: ?Out of thousands of photos, a team led by graphic designer Claus Due and photographer Franne Voigt has selected the ones that best tell the story of the Crown Princess? transformation from the Australian businesswoman Mary Donaldson to HRH Crown Princess of Denmark.?
CPss Mary to open an exhibition on her life in early February. The Frederik and Mary meeting story is legendary by now and IMO was one of the more unexpected ones from the late 1990's and early 2000's when so many of the heirs of that generation began to marry.

:crown: :coach: Denmark's Queen Margrethe will celebrate her Golden Jubilee on January 14, 2022. She ascended to the throne on the death of her father King Frederik IX on January 14, 1972. Traditionally a Golden Jubilee would have many public events associated with the anniversary, however with COVID still restricting public gatherings and travel, the large scale galas and other events have been either postponed, cancelled or scaled back.
Possible guest list for the events related to Queen Margrethe's Golden Jubilee on January 14, 2022. The guest list due to COVID travel restrictions may be limited to her sisters, sons, and daughters-in-law. Her extended family from the Greek and German royal families, are unlikely to attend. Currently confirmed: The Crown Prince Couple, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne Marie. However due to King Constantine's current health concerns, Anne Marie might need to decline.

Also new dates for Jubilee events that have had to be postponed for nine months due to COVID.
QuoteAfter announcing that, due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, many of the major public events of Queen Margarethe?s Golden Jubilee were to be postponed, the Danish Royal Household has released a new timeline for the celebrations.
The events were supposed to take place in mid-January, around the date of her father?s death and her subsequent ascension to the throne (which falls on the 14th of January), but they have now been moved to the 10th and 11th of September.
Those events include ?celebrations at Copenhagen City Hall, a gala performance at the Royal Theatre?s Old Stage, festive service in Copenhagen Cathedral and gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle?, according to the press release.
The intention is to maintain a small number of events for January 14th; at 9:30am, the Queen and the Crown Prince will welcome the Prime Minister at Christiansborg Castle while at 10am, the Queen, Crown Prince and Crown Princess, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte will take part in the celebrations at the Danish Folketing, offered by the Parliament. At 12pm, the family will move to Roskilde Cathedral, where they will lay a wreath on the grave of King Christian IX and Queen Ingrid, father and mother of the current Monarch.
Since the public will no longer be allowed to gather in the Yellow Palace at Amalienborg as is traditional for big Royal events, the Court has added a section to its website where citizens will be able to leave personal congratulatory messages for the Queen.

QuoteAs always, both the Swedish and Norwegian royal houses support the Danish. The Swedish king Carl GustaF is a first cousin of Queen Margrethe. His wife, Queen Silvia, who was born in Germany and raised in Brazil, clearly remembers how she was well received by her husband?s Danish cousin. I have always been fascinated that she also speaks perfect Swedish, I am happy about that, because I cannot speak Danish?.
Her Majesty Queen Sonja says: ?When I joined the family, Queen Margrethe was a support to me. She was probably my biggest supporter. She always helped me with practical questions about what happened and how to behave in given situations. It has continued in all years, she has been a great support?.
His Majesty King Harald adds: ?I look at Queen Margrethe as my friend, a very close friend?.

QuoteThe flowers themselves are made from thinly hammered plates of 21 carat gold. Each flower has baroque pearls inside and 4 diamond-tipped stamens. The design is a very literal translation of a garden flower, including moonstones and aquamarines on the leaves to represent dewdrops and insects depicted in pearls, crystals, opals, moonstones, and diamonds crawling about. It is often said that there are also tiny lights involved, to illuminate the flowers. Oh, yeah, and it?s a parure to boot: earrings and necklace included, because you can never get enough garishly bright gold.

Mary at 50: A very modern Crown Princess ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/mary-at-50-a-very-modern-crown-princess-171861/)
QuoteWhen Mary Donaldson tied the knot with Crown Prince Fredrik in 2004, the Australian-born marketing executive joined one of the world?s oldest surviving monarchies. Taking on her new role, Crown Princess Mary tackled the job with gusto, proving to be one of Denmark?s best assets. Steeped in history and rich in tradition, Mary has transformed the role of the Crown Princess with her own twist, making it very modern and relevant in today?s world.
Spending her early years in the small Australian city of Hobart, the Crown Princess?s childhood was about as far removed from the glittering court of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen as you can get. While her move halfway across the globe to marry the man she loved is hailed as a ?modern-day fairytale,? jumping into her new life didn?t come without any hardship. Culture shock and having to learn a difficult new language left the Crown Princess initially feeling very lonely.
The mum-of-four told the Australian Women?s Weekly in 2017: ?I did experience a feeling of loneliness ? short-term ? when I first moved to Denmark. Moving to Denmark was a huge change in my life ? a new culture, new language, new friends, and another way of life.?
Eventually, Mary was able to turn those feelings of isolation into her best asset, realising she could ?be a voice for those who are not usually heard.? In 2007, she founded The Mary Foundation, a program of charity projects that aim to tackle social problems such as bullying, domestic violence and loneliness.
n her new pictorial memoir, Mary H.K.H., which was released in January to celebrate her milestone birthday, the Crown Princess said: ?I have always been very aware that being Crown Princess is a position that comes with unique possibilities. From the very beginning, I was given the freedom and support to shape my own role and figure out how I could contribute to making a difference for the Danish people.?
Now that Mary's been the Crown Princess for nearly 18 years, I often forget how challenging it must have been for her to move to a very different climate, lifestyle and to immerse herself into one of Europe's most difficult languages. Her former-sister-in-law Alexandra had a bit of an advantage as she was a fluent German speaker, but as far as I know Mary's only language was English. While most adult Danes do speak and understand English, it was imperative that the future Queen Consort learn to become fully bilingual and bi-literate. Her sister-in-law Princess Marie was already bilingual in French and English, but also had to learn Danish.
Mary finds herself in good company with the Netherlands Queen Maxima, Sweden's Queen Silvia, Luxembourg's Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie, and Monaco's Princess Charlene who have experienced a similar challenge of acquiring a new language that differs from their primary one. Belgium's Queen Mathilde already was a fluent French speaker but reportedly did have to improve her Flemish (Dutch) when she married the then Duke of Brabant.
@TLLK, Thank you for the information. When one first sees the name of the tiara as The Danish Ruby Parure Tiara, one may not realize that it has any history with royal Sweden.

@Curryong-I can't believe that most of the young European heirs are now in their last years of secondary school or off to university. Elisabeth, Amalia, Leonor, Ingrid-Alexandra and Christian were all born between 2001-2005 and we've watched them from their first hospital photos to the present.

Yes, they are all in their teens (late teens) now and sometimes it?s hard to know where the years have gone. It wasn?t that long ago that there were discussions on royal forums about the appropriateness or otherwise of placing royal children in the public eye too much, and the example of the young William and Harry was often evoked.
Now all the young people that you have mentioned above are dating or soon will be and in their young adulthood will be master/mistresses of their own destinies. I wish them all well with it. As we?ve just seen with Amelia they face challenges as young royals that their parents often did not.

Prince Christian is now a licensed driver but will need to drive with another adult until his 18th birthday. :yesss:
Denmark?s Prince Christian, aged 17, gets his first driving licence ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/denmarks-prince-christian-aged-17-gets-his-first-driving-licence-191101/)
QuoteGetting your first driver?s license is a big milestone in everyone?s life. Now the Danish press has confirmed that the country?s future king, Prince Christian, has passed the tests and received his first driver?s license.
The Danish magazine ?Her og Nu? received confirmation from the communications staff in the Danish royal court. In a statement to the magazine, the royal court said: ?We can confirm that Prince Christian has obtained his driver?s license?.
According to Danish law, however, the Prince will not be able to drive a car alone for some time.
Rules in Denmark state that only those aged 18 and over can drive without supervision. Prince Christian?s new licence allows him to drive if he has someone over the age of 30 with him. That person must also have held a valid licence for at least ten years. In other words, the prince can now ask both his father and mother to accompany him if he wants to drive a car.
Getting your licence, even a provisional one is a great milestone in life. Here in Aus your 18th birthday means you can both drive (after passing the test of course) and go to a pub or club and legally drink alcohol there for the first time.
The experienced driver Christian has to have beside him for a year, is more likely to be his security officer than either of his parents imo especially if he?s going somewhere fun like a party with his mates.

I would say that many of the other Scandi royals will turn up to the celebrations, wouldn?t you? Not just the young ones like Princess I-A, but perhaps Harald and Sonja as well, plus Victoria and Daniel from Sweden. As for the other European royals, I guess it depends on their schedules. However I wouldn?t be surprised to see members of the SRF there, or Netherlands ones.

Yes, very exciting, and some of the almost 18 year olds have been picked by ballot. The evening ball celebration and banquet is apparently going to be white tie, so both the boys and girls chosen will probably be helped financially to enable them to buy suitable clothing and accessories.

I?d imagine that if there are any 18 year olds who are offspring of family friends of the Crown Prince couple they will get an invite. Or close courtiers of Queen Margrethe who have children/grandchildren of the right age may be there too. Danish nobility doesn?t really count for much any more, though.

Denmark reuses orders, as they have to be given back after the holders death. Christian?s order belonged to his late grandfather Prince Henrik
That nice holders after Prince Henrik?s death they torch to grandson order and sash on 18th birthday
QuoteThe final part of Prince Christian?s 18th Birthday celebrations will be attending the Council of State Meeting on Tuesday, November 14th.
Christian will make solemn declaration that he will abide by the Constitution.
Christian will be appointed as one of the regents, and able to perform certain duties when the Monarch is ill or out of the country.
(Prince Christian will not have a seat in the Council of State until his father's accession, as the Council of State does not include the heir to the heir)
I understand that Prince Christian will not seat in the council of state till his grandmother?s death, sick out of country same future sovereign will get that someday
QuoteIn Denmark, the Council of State meetings are held 5 or 6 times a year (about every 2 months), which is why Prince Christian isn't attending until about a month after his 18th Birthday

Wonder whether Christian will hunt down whose slipper it is?
Later: Oh, just read that it was a young guest from one of the 200 invitees from ordinary families. She left it as a prank! Now, that?s a bit disappointing!

It?s got nothing to do with BRF schedules imo. The BRF, with the exception of visits to England from Queen Daisy, King Harald and Queen Sonja and Prss Beatrix on occasion, whom the late Queen was quite friendly with, havent socialised regularly together for years. Edward and Sophie were the go to couple for those events if it was too difficult to get out of. After Charles separated from Diana he didn?t repeat the few events he formerly went to (with the possible exception of the German cousins) and the age gaps not coinciding did the rest for the last twenty five years.

Kinda but late Queen Elizabeth been friendly with Norway Royals,Danish Royals and Sweden Royals but BRF send in Queen Elizabeth?s behalf but Prince Charles they NOW King Charles separated from late Diana,Princess of Wales before Charles become King he attend Norway and Denmark in his mother?s behalf but Edward and Sophie attend European Royals events in late Queen Elizabeth?s behalf during her reign years but they NOW William,Prince of Wales will full responsibility for his father?s duties but members of royal family and expect also senior royals will do that same Princess Anne and Edinburghs in behalf King Charles?s reign same late Queen Elizabeth

But the loosening of ties between the BRF and members of Continental royalty began after WW1 with the Hohenzollerns off the BRF?s Xmas card list. It increased as the granddaughters of Queen Victoria and other relatives who had married into Continental royal houses began to die off and family ties weakened. And it was always said that the QM (the daughter of Scottish aristocrats with no royal blood) felt uncomfortable and out of place with whatever royal networking continued before and after WW2, and with a few exceptions among the Scandi royalty, there weren?t that many visits between Continental relatives and the BRF.
The late Queen, a shy woman who supported her mother, didn?t go on large numbers of holidays visiting other royals/relatives on the Continent though Philip did and his cousin Marina of Kent (whose sister married into the Yogoslav RF and whose Greek/Russian relatives were all over the place) certainly did. And, as I have pointed out, the standoffishness continued with Charles because of the Diana separation and the age difference between himself and all the other heirs.
And as for working BRF members being too busy with so many engagements being the excuse, it?s already been pointed out here that NONE of the present working members of the BRF have as many engagements per year as the late Queen and PP had.. And there are plenty of Continental and Scandi royals with as few members, or indeed fewer, than the BRF has, who still turn up to each other?s family celebrations, birthdays etc, so the explanation offered by that journalist for BRF members staying away was and is, just hogwash.
Happy belated birthday.
What school year is he actually?
I believe Christian has one more half-year to go at Ordrup Gymnasium in Copenhagen. I think after May 2024 he will then go on to officers? training followed by university study as other heirs have done.
@Curryong-I believe that you are correct. There doesn't appear to be a tradition of a gap year in the Danish Royal Family so I believe that Christian's education/preparation will be similar to Frederik's.
I posed the question because (it must be a Danish article mistake), saying he is in 11th grade, therefore graduating from school will be at 19. That would mean his parents placed him at school 1 year late.
In Denmark, most students do not go straight from what is called ''upper secondary'' school (equivalent to U.S. high school) to university. A study from Denmark's Evaluation Institute (EVA) which showed that 86% of the students who started their education in 2018 had one or more ''sabbatical years'' beforehand (what they call a Gap Year). A check of other sources shows a more conservative number, but in all cases they show 75% or more Danish students taking at least one year off before college.

That might be so for many Danish students but I really doubt that Christian will be taking a full gap year after leaving school in May next year. He will then be 18 1/2 years of age.
Reasons? He is the direct heir to the throne after his father. His grandmother the Queen is elderly, and had back surgery only a year or so ago. Like his father Frederik the Crown Prince and his Uncle Joachim, Fred?s brother, Christian is almost certain to undertake some form of military training. Most heirs do. Fred enjoyed a lot of naval training more than any other, but he still did some military stuff as well. Even if Christian does a foreshortened course of twelve months specially devised for him, there will be no way he would be entering university in his early twenties which is what would happen if he had a gap year or more before it.
