Title: Duke and Duchess of Kent engagements, news and chat
Post by: snokitty on October 27, 2012, 11:53:50 PM
A thread for the Duke and Duchess of Kent and family's news and general chat.

SPECIAL FEATURE: A voice for the unborn: Lord Nicholas Windsor in Australia (John Ballantyne) (http://www.newsweekly.com.au/article.php?id=5371)

QuoteLord Nicholas, 42, is the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, a great-grandson of King George V and first cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II.

On the eve of the Melbourne march, he delivered the inaugural March for the Babies Oration at Melbourne's Sofitel Hotel.

Before he commenced his address, he made a special request to the audience. He asked them: "Please can we begin by keeping a minute's silence? I ask you to pray for our brothers and sisters in the human family who are at this moment alive in the wombs of their mothers, but for whom another day of life is not a given.... Pray too for those same mothers that they may have the courage, and the love of others, so as to bring their child into this world."

In his speech he said: "We are always first of all for life, welcoming it, joyful at the good news of new life, but inspired to hasten to help the mother less able to help herself. Because, for all manner of reasons, childbearing, childbirth and childrearing are tasks that call for great sacrifice and courage on the part of women....

"Loud voices aren't all we need. We need soft and sweet voices too. And then again silence, because silence reminds us of the missing, the fallen, the painful absence of those who might have lived noisily amongst us — in our homes, in our streets and gardens. But they are absent, taken from us, and because of that they can too easily be forgotten.

QuoteThe Duchess of Kent has conducted a rare interview which will be broadcast on Classic FM this coming Monday.

The Duchess, who prefers to be known as Katharine Kent, has given an interview as part of a special programme on Classic FM celebrating her charity, Future Talent.

Presented by Alexander Armstrong, the programme will air on Bank Holiday Monday at 8pm, and will feature recordings of spectacular young musicians and Future Talent alumni performing at Buckingham Palace.

The Duchess of Kent helped to found Future Talent after seeing the lack of support available to talented young musicians.

The charity supports young people between the ages of 5 and 18 who would not otherwise have the financial means to develop their musical talent.

Katharine?s biggest passion in life is music, and the very few engagements which she still conducts as a member of The Royal Family are usually musically based. As well as teaching in Hull and London, the Duchess also rented out a flat in London where she taught piano lessons.

Title: Re: Duke and Duchess of Kent engagements, news and chat
Post by: Curryong on March 12, 2020, 02:45:24 AM
The Dukedom of Kent is not a particularly old Royal title. It came in with the Hanovarians and was created for George IIIs son Edward who became Queen Victoria's father. It's not likely to die out or return to the Royal fold as the present Duke has four grandsons. His younger son, Lord Nicholas Windsor has fathered three of them.

The one that I regret escaping is the Dukedom of Gloucester, which dates back to medieval times in the RF. The Present Duke has one son and one grandson who is now thirteen. There's a possibility of the dukedom dying out if Xian never marries or has sons I suppose, but it ceases to be a Royal Dukedom anyway as soon as the Earl of St Andrews, the heir, inherits the title, as he is not an HRH.

As soon as the heirs to Royal dukedoms inherit them these dukedoms cease to be Royal, as the recipients aren't HRHs. They just die out in the future if there are no sons to carry on.

It would be a remote possibility that there could be a new creation by the monarch of the day if this were to happen but as far as I know the only Royal Dukedom where this would occur in the knowable future is York, as Andrew has no son. There's a possibility that George may make a second son of his Duke of York, but it's unlikely to happen in William's reign for Louis, as, if Andrew keeps up the family average he's likely to live into his nineties.

That's what happened with the Dukedom of Edinburgh. The Duke of E before Philip was Queen Victoria's second son, Alfred (Affie). His only son predeceased him (in ambiguous circumstances) and Alfred himself died not long afterwards. His British title (he also had a German one) was subsumed back into the Crown and remained so until 1947, when it was recreated for Prince Philip. It's odd to think that in 1947 there were still people around who could remember that other Duke of Edinburgh!

Yes there were Earldoms of Kent. Earls were a very high ranking in Anglo Saxon England (there were no Dukes) and Kent was of course an important kingdom, but the Normans also carried on the custom of Earls after the Conquest and in fact the earldom of Kent continued on into medieval times and beyond (in the Grey family.) However, Kent as a primary Royal Dukedom for a King's son was only introduced after the Hanovarian Kings came to the throne.

I just love and appreciate the historical and royal knowledge that exists within this forum. When Prince Harry was getting married there was a lot of discussion of titles he might have received, and the consensus was that Sussex was probably the best bet. I felt a little sad that Clarence, Albany or Connaught were not considered  for "resurrection", since they were associated with Queen Victoria (her uncle and grandsons).

Yes, but Connaught (the title borne by Prince Arthur, Queen Victoria's third son) is now associated with Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, so that was always off the table for Harry. And the RF seem to have an almost superstitious horror of some names/titles bringing bad luck healthwise. Witness the absence of any BRF Prince being christened John since the death of George V and Queen Mary's youngest son during the First World War.

With the death of the the last Duke of Clarence from pneumonia before he was thirty, I think the Queen turned instead to the Hanovarians. And after all, Cambridge was a title given to another son of George III, so 'Sussex' had a certain harmony with that as far as William and Harry were concerned.

I should hoep that they wouldn't have ever entertained the idea of using Connaught.  Clarence is also associated with George duke of Clarence drowned in a butt of malmsey...
I think that Cambridge was given to WIll with a nod to Queen Mary, whose mother was  a Cambridge.. ANd now there aren't many of the ducal titles that have been used, available.  Cumberland also has bad vibes, so I think of the older title there was olnly Sussex left for Harry..

Yes Queen Mary's maternal grandfather was Adolphus, (Dolly) Duke of Cambridge, another of the innumerable sons of George III.

Clarence certainly didn't have a very salubrious history. The posters at the Alexandra Palace Forum loved Prince Eddy,  btw, and thought he'd been badly treated by history.

I suppose William Duke of Clarence (a naval man) who became King William IV, was the best of a bad lot, even if he did have a very long affair with an actress Dora Jordan and ten children by her.

I don't think the RF like the idea of Clarence, as the most recent association is with Eddy and I don't think they want him remembered.  William IV wasn't too bad, but he was a bit of an idiot, and just passable as a King.. and then there is George.  So really all that was left for Harry was Sussex.  Augustus was liked by Victoria and not too bad, in spite of 2 morganatic marriages. Most Royal Dukedoms had died out before fourth generation males in the centuries before George V, and the sovereigns also had a propensity for all their legitimate male descendants to be Princes anyway.

Truly the end of an era as the Kents have long been associated with the tournament. Thank you to the Duke of Kent for his many dedicated years of service.

I am beginning to wonder if this is a sign that both Edward and Alexandra might be getting ready to retire from royal duties. She's just handed down one of her patronages to Sophie in the last week. Both have had health issues in recent years as well.

Cliche but it really is the end of an era. He was quite young when I first remember him presenting the cups. I do think his sister Alexandra won?t be seen doing many more royal duties and I guess the Duke is slowing down to considerably too. He once said that he wouldn?t stop while the Queen was still here.

However, both he and Alexandra haven?t been very well over the past decade, Alexandra especially, and everybody has to retire sometime. He?s been a superb President of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club, everyone says so, and can now rest on his laurels,

Truly deserved retirement, he was an excellent President.  His latest big decision was to notify formally the cancelation of Wimbledon 2020 before insurance deadline.  It was the only one of the 4 yearly grand slams that insured the moneys via insurance company, truly paid off. That is why they were able to do many things with that money which wasn't used last year (Covid19). The sponsors paid 'new' moneys for this year 2021.

It is not easy to sign off any (from small to big) and all decision before, during and after the yearly Wimbledon (i read all the good bad and ugly via twitter, instagram and youtube), so wishing (IMO 99.9% HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) all the best to the new President, whoever it may be.

A little part of me would like to see one of the Kent family members (Edward, Alexandra or Michael's children) continue in the role as president, but honestly they all have their own careers to consider taking on such a position.

It has to be a tennis mad public person image or a very rich person (AO President for example) with a contact book, hence my choice of Kate.  It's been hard to secure moneys for both the men and women's tour this year. The best moneys this year has been Wimbledon and Australian Open, despite the latter paid in AUD, their president found hotel, food, gym equipment, other amenities to sponsor for free ALL the athletes, that is a bonus.

Wimbledon is so prestigious, the oldest 1870's (invented by the English), let's see what the new president can do. It will be hard to do better than what the Duke did, amazing job.

Kate won?t be President. They are two separate roles. She would have to give up being Patron to become President which is a bit more of an administrative position, though Royals in every sport who occupy those two roles don?t do very much at all of the admin or decision making. Royal Patrons promote the sport and Royal Presidents just sign off on things when needed.

He took over as patron in 1969 from his mother who held the position for 26 years. Well over 70 years a Kent has been president.

Definitely an end of an era. Too bad the Duke's kids are considered too private to be handed the presidency. It would have been amazing to see three generations in a row.

Yes, I can remember Marina handing out the trophies, always a very elegant figure! The Duke?s father was also a Patron though I can?t remember him!  Sad that Kent involvement has now ended for good. I don?t think any of the Duke?s children are that interested in tennis and anyway they are not nearly high profile enough for the position.

The Duke of Kent is to release his memoirs in 2022 to be entitled A Royal Life. I might be interested in reading his viewpoint as a member of the BRF who is not part of the main focus of the monarchy but who has worked on behalf of the nation and the monarchy for decades.

Richard Kay's thoughts on what might be covered in the Duke of Kent's memoirs. According to Kay, the Duke decided to begin work on them during the COVID lockdown.

The Duke of Kent will publish his memoir just before the Prince's bombshell book  | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10354063/The-Duke-Kent-publish-memoir-just-Princes-bombshell-book.html#reader-comments)

QuoteAs first cousins they are whisper-close confidants whose lives have shared in the ups and downs of so many royal dramas ? and countless family secrets.

She was present at his christening in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace and eight-and-a-half decades later, when the Queen faced her first birthday parade after the death of Prince Philip, he was there at her side.

He is 86 now and though the higher-profile activities of young royals such as William, Kate, Meghan and Harry grab the headlines, the Duke of Kent carries serenely on with his duties with a quiet, unfussy dignity and absolute contentment.

Indeed it would be hard to find another Royal Family member who embodies the qualities of loyalty and obligation to Queen and country more than Edward Kent, whose father died in a wartime flying accident when he was just six.

So the news that the duke is writing his memoirs in which, we are promised, he will be telling the inside story ?behind the scenes of the world?s most celebrated family?, is remarkable.

Due to be published next May, its timing is significant. Not only will it appear just ahead of the Queen?s platinum jubilee celebrations, it will also beat the arrival of another royal book ? the tell-all autobiography of Prince Harry.

At that Palace christening, as well as the nine-year-old Princess Elizabeth, were the duke?s godparents, among them his grandfather and grandmother the King and Queen and the then Prince of Wales. It places the duke, whose granddaughter Lady Amelia Windsor is a model and Tatler cover girl, at the epicentre of royal life.

So what might be in the 304-page book, called A Royal Life ? and more pertinently what might be left out?

On the surface his life has been one of service, 21 years in the Army as an officer in the Royal Scots Greys followed by 45 years of carrying out royal engagements.

But at the same time he has had a ringside seat at some of the great post-war events, from the funeral of his uncle George VI, where he walked behind the King?s coffin, and the Queen?s coronation in 1953, to last June?s socially distanced Trooping the Colour ceremony where the duke accompanied the Queen, the only other member of the Royal Family present.

He was on horseback, alongside Prince Philip and Prince Charles, when blank gun shots were fired as the Queen led the 1981 Birthday Parade. And he was often a valued source of sound advice in the domestic crises that, at times, threatened to engulf the Queen, from the failed marriages of three of her children to the death of Princess Diana.

A very rare appearance by Katherine (Duchess of Kent) at an engagement!   :hearts:

The Duchess of Kent makes her first public appearance in almost three years as she attends surprise engagement ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/kent/the-duchess-of-kent-makes-her-first-public-appearance-in-almost-three-years-as-she-attends-surprise-engagement-176970/)

QuoteThe Duchess of Kent has been seen in public for the first time in almost three years as she made a surprise appearance at an engagement close to her heart.

The Duchess, who prefers to be known as Katharine, attended an event at Lancaster House in London for her charity, Future Talent.

Katharine set up Future Talent in 2004 to help children from deprived backgrounds thrive in music.

The Duchess stepped down from royal duties in 2002, and has since led a quiet life away from the public spotlight.

Katherine was last seen in in public in September 2019 when she hosted a concert at St James?s Palace for the Royal Northern College of Music.

A photograph of her was also released in June 2020 when she privately met with the charity?s new ambassador, Minhaz Abedin.

The Duchess of Kent was long associated with the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Here's some information about her and Wimbledon.

The Duchess of Kent at Wimbledon through the years ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/kent/wimbledon-fashion-through-the-years-the-duchess-of-kent-163107/)

QuoteThe Duchess of Kent, or Katherine Kent as she prefers to be known, is perhaps one of the most uncommon faces in the British Royal Family. Over the years, she has rarely made public appearances, but each summer, she usually makes an exception. The Duchess is a regular at Wimbledon and was once in charge of handing out prizes during the championship.

In 2021, the Duke of Kent retired as the President of The All England Lawn Tennis Club after 52 years and passed his role on to the Duchess of Cambridge. With the 2022 championships here, Royal Central is looking at some of the Duchess of Kent?s appearances at the tennis event over the years.

Yes, I read that! It?s clear that the Duchess loves all kinds of music and I think it?s great that someone her age can really get into gangsta rap. It?s an acquired taste and even my grandchildren aren?t keen. I?ve always had a soft spot for Kate Kent. Never afraid to try something new at different times in her life. Quiet but determined!

It looks as if the late Queen?s cousins, specifically the Duke of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra, are headed for retirement. Princess Alexandra is very frail, looked exceptionally so at Charles?s Coronation, and the Duke has long-standing mobility issues (whoops, a pun!) meaning he has had to miss engagements. Alexandra has had only two or three engagements for several months.

The Duke of Kent ?reluctantly? misses Remembrance Sunday commemorations due to mobility issues ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/kent/the-duke-of-kent-reluctantly-misses-remembrance-sunday-commemorations-due-to-mobility-issues-194889/)

As well, the Duke has been gradually handing over several of his more prominent patronages. The latest is his Presidency of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, a very important position which involves some travel. Princess Anne is to take over, apparently. Perhaps Tim will deputise for her sometimes.

The Duke of Kent passes on important role to Princess Anne ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/features/the-duke-of-kent-passes-on-important-role-to-princess-anne-194865/#)

@Curryong-I agree that the time in which the Kent siblings retire from royal duties is drawing near. It was very evident at the events related to the Queen's Lying-in-State and her funeral, that Edward was struggling physically. Also  the group photo from King Charles III's coronation clearly showed that Edward and Sophie were physically supporting Alexandra. Even their younger brother Michael appears to be having some issues, so perhaps there's some genetic issue here?

Both have served their nation and two monarchs now for decades, I hope that both will choose to retire and enjoy their remaining time in peace and as much comfort as possible.

Also I agree that Anne is a fitting replacement for Edward with the Commonwealth Graves and that it would be appropriate for Timothy to substitute for her now and then.
