Henry of Lancaster, the son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, was one of the Lords Appellant who challenged King Richard II's rule in 1387. In 1387 the King was forced to restate his coronation oath. In 1398 Richard II exiled Henry for ten years. In 1399 King Richard seized Henry's inheritance on the demise of John of Gaunt.
