Marie Biscuits were named after the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia, the wife of Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son.

^ Yes, the biscuit was created to celebrate the wedding of Affie, Duke of Edinburgh to Grand Duchess Pudding Face, the only daughter of Tsar Alexander the Liberator. What a love match that was, NOT! Affie could hear his favourite sound, the chink chink of money, as Marie brought a magnificent dowry to the table.

How did the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna get to be called the Grand Duchess Pudding Face?  :o :o :o

^^ It's my rather rude title for her, LouisFerdinand. She had a face like a suet pudding as she got older, though she was reasonable as a young woman. Marie had grown up as her parents' darling for whom nothing in the world was good enough and she retained that attitude all her life.

Sheer arrogance, even when she was living on a tiny allowance at the end of her life, granted to her by King George V and Queen Mary. She'd lost everything due to the Russian Revolution and the First World War, by then.

She hated the British and the BRF, partly because because she had had to give precedence to the Princess of Wales. Alexandra was in her eyes the daughter of a piffling little King of the Danes while she was THE daughter of the Tsar.

Marie married her daughters off very young because they might otherwise grow a brain and contradict her when they were older. She and Alfred treated their only son dreadfully. Affie was no better. Too busy with his naval career to worry about his family, a boorish alcoholic and probably unfaithful. A delightful couple who deserved each other, IMO.
