Franz Winterhalter (1805-1873) was a German painter. He painted portraits of Royalty.     
He was appointed court painter of King Louis-Philippe I of the French.   
Winterhalter also painted portraits of the Imperial Family of the Second French Empire.

Yes, he painted that lovely portrait of Empress Eugenie among her ladies in waiting. I was reading some recollections of  Arch Duke Maximilian the other day, the one who was shot in Mexico. He was a great admirer of the young and beautiful Empress Elizabeth of Austria (who was also painted by Winterhalter.)

Maximilian stated that Eugenie was attractive but that much of it was 'due to art', in other words, to her use of cosmetics. It was on this trip that he met Carlotta (Charlotte) for the first time. She was very young. He also inferred her father Leopold I enjoyed lecturing and giving the benefit of his advice.
