In 1244 Queen Eleanor of England gave birth to a son.
King Henry III, determined that this child should be a boy, had had 1,000 candles set before the altar of Becket's shrine at Canterbury.
The King had 1,000 more candles at the church of St. Augustine lighted.
He told the abbot of St. Edmund's that if he had a son he would name the child for the saint.
Henry III had the monks chant the Antiphon of St. Edmund while Queen Eleanor went into labor.
A son was born. The Prince was named Edmund.

Edmund's nickname of "Crouchback" refers to his participation in the Ninth Crusade.
