QuotePolicing the wedding of the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips and former Bath rugby star Mike Tindall cost £400,000, it emerged yesterday.

The ceremony on July 30 at Canongate Kirk on Edinburgh's Royal Mile was a private family affair, with guests including the Queen, Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Thousands of well-wishers waited outside to catch a glimpse of the spectacle as the Gloucestershire-based couple made their way to the wedding reception held in the grounds of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a few hundred yards from the kirk.

The £400,000 bill for policing the event and managing the protection for the arrival of 13 members of the Royal Family will be passed on to the taxpayer.

Lothian and Borders Police gave the task the codename Operation Opal, with officers also having a presence at the wedding rehearsal the day before the main event as well as a pre-wedding drinks reception on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
