A thread to discuss the general news for the Wessexes not related to royal duties. TITLE FOR THE EARL OF WESSEX | The Royal Family (https://www.royal.uk/title-earl-wessex)
QuoteThe Earl of Wessex is Patron of a number of Scottish charitable organisations, such as The Edinburgh International Festival, the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and Badminton Scotland.
As Trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh?s Award, HRH has supported the non formal education of thousands of young people in Scotland and holds annual Gold Award presentations at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
In 2014 The Earl was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, The Queen?s personal representative to the Assembly.
Their Royal Highnesses will use the title The Earl and Countess of Forfar when in Scotland.
The Earldom of Forfar was created in 1661 and became extinct as a title in 1715. It was a subsidiary title to the Earl of Ormond and was a title held by the Douglas Family.
Well, the Queen hasn't forgotten Edward's birthday this year! And it's very nice that it is connected with the Bowes Lyons and Glamis. Is it a bit of compensation, I wonder, for having to wait possibly until old age for the Dukedom of Edinburgh.

Will Edward be 1st Earl of Forfar or 3rd Earl of Forfar?
Edward is the first Earl of Forfar of that particular creation (by the Queen, his mother) as the line of the former Earls died out centuries ago.

QuoteIn 1999, prior to the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones, it was announced that the Prince would, in the future, become the Duke of Edinburgh; so on the occasion of their marriage, he was instead bestowed the title of Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn.
@TLLK I didn't realize that. Wow!
And with that goes the responsibility for the DOE's organization. I understand that the Earl is already in involved.
@Princess Cassandra That's interesting! Its going to be a big transition for Edward.
Yes, although he is already working on it! It's not something that gets a lot of coverage, though.

They all start so early. At what age does learning to ride horses become "impossible".
I'm curious. Other sports you can take up and learn at practically any time. Though perhaps you won't become a professional.
They were not galloping!
Oak and Cedar: You can learn to ride at any age as long as you are healthy enough. Strength, flexibility and balance are important in the sport, so if you want to learn to ride you should prepare by going to the gym to strengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility and balance. Do a lot of walking, too. It is a very enjoyable sport, and if you feel that you don't want to risk a fall you can learn to drive instead.
I just wonder when Edward got the title of Earl of Wessex on his wedding day and arragements were reportedly made for him to eventually be the Duke of Edinburgh of a new creation, whether anyone realised that Edward could well be in his sixties before he gets his Royal Dukedom in the next reign?
Of course his parents aren't in any way to blame for living into their nineties and indeed they may well both reach 100. However I do wonder whether such longevity among the family was considered when Edward was promised his father's title. He's been an Earl for twenty years and in that time his much younger nephews have been given Dukedoms. Wonder whether there was a tinge of regret in the granting of this latest Earldom by the Queen, as a sort of consolation prize?
Possibly. Though Im sure she's glad that Philip is still around and pretty spry, though he has retired from active work.
Curryong, You ask a few good questions. I wonder how Edward feels about this? Sophie's star seems to be rising, I wonder if she is preparing for a more high-profile role?

QuoteSophie, the Countess of Wessex, has become a dedicated senior member of the Royal Family in the last decade. She has chosen to support a number of different causes and represents The Queen across the Commonwealth. Her Royal Highness is a patron to a number of organisations and quietly but thoroughly supports them all. In a lesser capacity, she supports the Prince of Wales in the Campaign for Wool to promote the use of British wool.
Definitely something that she has in common with QEII, the PoW and DssoC.
Yes, I love that about her. That picture of her with a little boy and his lamb is absolutely adorable - he's so little but all dressed up with a tie and all, and seems so proud to show off his pet. And she doesn't seem afraid of that bird of prey, does she!

It not going to return to normal soon. At best it will be some months and even if the virus stops spreading or they have a vaccine by then, I think that there will be a massive recession which is going to impact on all of us. QuoteMuch of the work carried out by some members of the royal family can go unnoticed by the public.
Whilst royal dramas generate bigger headlines, perhaps it is time to turn our attention to the important work being carried out by the Countess of Wessex. This year, there has been a growing recognition of the work done by Sophie who works tirelessly behind-the-scenes and has become patron for multiple charities and organisations often with little fanfare.
The main areas that the countess supports young people with disabilities, avoidable blindness, agriculture and prevention of sexual violence in conflicted areas.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex was today self-isolating at home after coming into contact earlier this week with someone who has now tested positive for coronavirus.
The 55-year-old wife of Prince Edward is not experiencing any symptoms of Covid-19 but is said to be following all relevant Government guidelines.
Sophie is not thought to have seen any members of the wider Royal Family since she met the unnamed person who has subsequently tested positive.

QuoteIt?s been a busy year for the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The couple, who normally operate with very little press coverage, have seen their roles transform this year with the departure of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex as full-time working royals.
This year the couple came more to the forefront with their royal duties. Edward and Sophie continued to champion their own individual causes: women?s rights, prevention of blindness, The Duke of Edinburgh?s Award, and other creative pursuits; but they also pivoted to supporting volunteers and frontline workers as the coronavirus pandemic came to the United Kingdom.
Let?s take a look back at the year in review for Edward and Sophie!
This blog site typically reviews royal years but will often focus upon the individual members of the British Royal Family. With many of the older members of the BRF were limited when it came to in-person engagements, I believe that the Wessexes were especially visible. Click on the link to read about the Wessexes' activities in 2020.

Edward and Sophie follow in Anne?s footsteps with mooted move to Scotland ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/edward-and-sophie-follow-in-annes-footsteps-with-mooted-move-to-scotland-155516/)
QuoteReports that the Earl and Countess of Wessex were being lined up as official royal residents in Edinburgh in a bid to calm calls for an independence referendum in Scotland have surprised many. However, it?s not the first time that it?s been suggested one of the Queen?s children settle at Holyroodhouse to boost the relationship between London and Edinburgh. Over two decades ago, the Princess Royal was at the heart of similar stories.
Back in 1999, the year that Edward and Sophie married, it was reported that the Queen was considering an idea for Anne to live permanently in Edinburgh. A role, described by some as ?quasi-regent? was being weighed up while a job for her husband, Sir Tim Laurence, at the naval base at Faslane was also mooted. In fact, the Herald went as far as to talk to a constitutional expert about a possible new title for Anne should she end up holding court at Edinburgh.
The reasons given for a move north for the princess are along much the same lines as those mooted for Edward and Sophie now. The Daily Mail has reported that Downing Street talked about the possibility of the Earl and Countess setting up home in Scotland to deepen the ??emotional bond?? between the country and the Crown. It was suggested that the couple, who are known as the Earl and Countess of Forfar in Scotland, would take on a bigger range of engagements in Scotland, thus boosting the public face of the Monarchy.
Downing Street told the paper that ??no formal request?? had been made to the Royal Family for the move while Buckingham Palace commented to the Mail that it was ??unaware of the proposal??.
Was this 'suggestion' a Daily Fail special? :hehe:
If the move to Scotland had been mooted when Anne first married Tim it might have been a good idea. I say 'might' because many Scots have wanted to be unhitched from England for a very long time. However, now, with Sturgeon calling for another independence referendum in a couple of years, this suggestion, IF true, smacks of desperation.
And at least Anne has had plenty of engagements performed over the border and is more known there.
But the Wessexes? Really!! I know Sophie is regarded as a workhorse and the media has been constantly bleating for twelve months that she is the rising star of the BRF. However the reality is that nobody in Britain really cares about the Wessexes. They've both got the charisma of a dead haddock and the chances that they could change Scottish minds about independence is below zero.

I must have had an easy menopause as I sailed through it, and thanked God at the end that I didn?t have to bother any more every month. I did get fuzzy brain a couple of times during my pregnancies though, including leaving my toddler outside in her pusher next door to an ice cream shop and then walking off and leaving her. When the Cambridge-educated Prince started dating Sophie Rhys-Jones, then a PR exec with her own firm, in 1993, his parents were delighted. The Queen took an immediate shine to the sales director?s daughter from Kent, who won plaudits in the press for her down-to-earth ?girl next door? image and work ethic. Despite often being compared to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who died two years before they married, the Countess largely kept her head down and quickly became the Queen?s go-to girl.
Yet she has not shied away from ?gritty? subject matters over the years, such as her work on gender-based violence in conflict, and trips to ?difficult areas?, such as South Sudan and Sierra Leone.
I once asked a royal aide why the Queen was so fond of her daughter-in-law. ?I think it?s because she never makes any demands of HM,? they replied. ?When the Queen appears, even for private family gatherings, she will quickly find a crowd gathered around her. The Countess always stands back and I think the Queen appreciates that.?
I like Sophie and Edward. Great interview.
Thank you for sharing the link. It was an excellent interview with the Wessexes.
I noticed the interview caused a minor kerfuffle on some corners of social media.
Oh? Why? I thought it was a nice, safe interview.
Because of *Oprah who*
The Sussex Squad and Omid took it as shade.
I dont think they handled that well, but perhaps its impossible to do so. If they coldly ignored the question it would not look good..
Sophie was defending a clergy member who didn?t recognize Oprah and said that you would have to watch chat shows - at least in this country (England). Oprah is huge in US but I can easily see a minister in England not recognizing her. I know my dad and my mom here in Canada wouldn?t have a clue if I mentioned Oprah. Maybe my mom, maybe.
As for people slagging Sophie because she went to Oprah?s schools in Africa - she didn?t say she didn?t know who she was. Well, they did say Oprah who? But that was a way of dealing with an uncomfortable question.
And if the Wessexs are not thrilled with Oprah right now, that?s their right. It?s a nasty situation.
Yes I got that. I know that she was defending some bishop, but saying "Oprah who", was a bit awkward. That said, i think that the only thing they COULD do was to say "No comment" or just a polite and cool "we didn't see the interview"..
Im sure they are all furious about the interview but they can hardly say so in public.
It was an impossible question. Damned if they do....

Well yes. Just that maybe Oprah who sounded a bit awkward. And it set off people complaining that Sophe must know who Oprah is
Sophie jumped the interviewers question that Justin Welby didn't know who Oprah was. He had asked Oprah during the wedding reception what was her relation with the bride or groom.
Sophie told the interviewer if you are not into chat shows, the Archbishop wouldn't know who Oprah is.
Context...
I thought the question to be funny.
I agree that its possilbe that an older man who wans't into chat shows would not know who Oprah was.. and I think that soem people DID wonder what relation she had to Meghan....
Hello (in robes) are you a guest of the bride or groom. Followed by 'what do you do for a living'?
This guy spends his day to day with a routine, his assistant gives him priority news around the world, especially Anglican matters of the UK.
That doesn't mean that he's incapable of small talk or that he doesn't watch a chat show occasionally...He hardly sits at home reading nothing but theology books
It would be interesting to open a Justin Welby thread, similar to the Pope thread. His routines, Mental Health battles, etc.
Why? He's not a monarch.. he's a priest.
He's the Archbishop of the Anglican Church.
Yes, but what would that have to do with royalty? He is not royal. If he has mental health struggles Im sure he doesn't want everyone talking about them.. and just because he works iwth the RF at times does not mean that he's IMO the sort of public figure who should expect to be talked about on a royal forum.
the poor man had enough embarrassment iwth the "Meghan getting married" situation...
We will discuss this with the Admin/mod team. Until then please only discuss him in relation to the Royal family. Thank you
Yes, hence my comment about opening a thread in the random coffee board. :D
I don't think Justin Welby was cunning at the wedding reception when he small talk/conversation question (s) to Oprah. I believe he truly didn't know who she is.

Can Lady Louise really take the title of Princess on her 18th birthday? ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/can-lady-louise-really-take-the-title-of-princess-on-her-18th-birthday-168082/)
QuoteOn 8 November 2021, Lady Louise Windsor will turn 18. The elder child of Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and his wife, Sophie, much of the conversation around her milestone birthday is about her styling.
Louise is known formally as Lady Louise Windsor, as the daughter of an earl would be styled. However, as the grandchild of the sovereign in a male line, she has been entitled since birth to use the ?Her Royal Highness? style. In a statement shared shortly after her birth, The Queen, along with the Wessexes, stated that Louise would be styled as an earl?s daughter rather than HRH.
In a 2020 interview with The Times, Louise?s mother said, ?We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it?s highly unlikely.?
The 1917 Letters Patent (issued by George V) clearly defines who can and who cannot use the HRH style. It was specifically designed to limit the number of people who can use the royal highness designation. However, it does not address those who are entitled to use the styling but choose not to ? there is no clause that precludes someone legally entitled to use the HRH style if they decide to not use it.
Sophie?s statement clearly shows that the option for Louise to use the HRH style is there. The Wessexes are known for being incredibly close to Her Majesty, and it seems unlikely that Sophie would make such a strong statement in a public interview if The Queen disagreed. While royal squabbles and family fights emerge from different branches of the Royal Family, there are rarely any issues raised between The Queen and the Wessexes
I agree with the author that the styles and royal title of Prince/Princes are technically there for the Wessex children but that they're not likely to use them. They're more likely to just continue with their current ones.
The question is a bit silly. Of course she can. She could take it now. It?s hers. She already is a Princess. The qUestion should be Will she take it. Likely not.
Who 'legally' is a prince/ss?
I don?t think it is strictly a legal entity. It?s a styling given automatically to the children of the monarch (if we are talking UK) and the children of the heir(s) to the throne. The titles were given to Beatrice and Eugenie because rumour has it that Andrew pushed for his daughters to be Princesses as they were of the blood royal. And the Queen at the time no doubt believed that Beatrice and Eugenie would be performing royal duties as adults.
Edward is quite self effacing and it?s doubtful he pushed as Andrew did. As I?ve posted on here before a person on a big Royal forum informed members there that she had actually written to BP about it as a big debate was going on in the forum at the time as to why young Louise and James were not Princess and Prince.
Accordingly an official at BP wrote back informing her that it had been decided at the time of the Wessexes? wedding that the children would not be HRHs,and so we got our answer. That was about five years ago, and now it appears that info was incorrect as Sophie in an interview earlier this year stated that both WERE technically HRHs but that she and Edward had decided that Louise and James would make the choice of becoming HRHs and Prince and Princess when they reached 18.
There?s been a lot of rubbish in the Press about this lately, ie that Louise is going to be a Counsellor of State, that she is wanted on the Royal roster, etc. Like others here I believe it?s far more likely that she will continue to be Lady Louise and will go on to University and a career. I also believe James will choose a career and not be a Prince. There?s no advantage to being a Prince/Princess and HRH when you are that low down on the totem pole. Far better to be unencumbered.
I think that things changed.. that a few years ago, they were regarded as simply having the courtesy titles of the children of an earl.. but in latter times perhaps the queen has reverted to her natural conservatism and has said that if they want to use their HRHS and be styled as Pr James etc.. they can do so.
As for Bea and Eugenie, they are HRH because they are the grandchildren of the monarch in the male line.. so according to the protocols of 1917, they are entitled to be HRH. Simple as that. I think that in hte 80s the queen didn't consider that there might be a dip in popularity for the RF which happened in the 1990s and which IMO caused her to agree to let Ed's children just be Viscount and Lady.

QuoteAn elderly woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after she was struck by a police motorbike escorting Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, in west London.
At around 3.21pm on Wednesday, the motorcycle collided with the woman near the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in Earl's Court.
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance rushed to the scene and a woman, aged in her 80s, has been taken to hospital.
She remains there in a critical condition. Her family have been informed.
Buckingham Palace says the Duchess of Edinburgh's 'thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family', adding she was grateful for the 'swift response' of emergency services. There are no reports of any other injuries.
^That?s so awful. I hope she recovers.
This is the second time (William court circular a few years ago) an elderly is hit by the motorcade in a busy intersection and at a crossing. The numero uno motorcade member that is ahead of the group motorcade should stop pedestrian traffic (including cyclists) like they did last Friday for the BP reception. It's actually highly coordinated, the Motorcade M stops pedestrians at a crossing/light, the motorcade goes through, the Motorcade M then hits the accelerator passes the Motorcade Group to the next crossing/stoplight.
Yes, I watched live even that, one hour of departures leaving BP through the sidestreet of BP - pedestrians gasping when W left like last! I spent the weekend, Coronation weekend, my only outing was Saturday afternoon for a Linner - Linner in the suggested new word category as, a combination of lunch and dinner.

As Lady Louise is most unlikely to become a working royal I don?t think that?s likely. Imo if it gets a royal patron again and lots of events and charities won?t then it will probably be Princess Anne. Louise hasn?t got enough of a profile to become a patron of a prestigious horse show like the Windsor, and like I said, her own mother said that both her children are likely to have careers, ie be private citizens.

I hope that she is considered for the future, but for the time being I have to agree with
@Curryong that it will likely pass to the Princess Royal. However I could see King William bestowing a joint patronage to his cousins Olympian Zara Tindall and carriage enthusiast Lady Louise Windsor. It wouldn't be a "royal" patronage, but as long as there's a Windsor family member as a patron, that would likely be acceptable.
It's just my wishful thinking, tied with the new times, tied with Princess Anne's interview, tied with young blood, tied with Willam and Kate as the future. She is not too young, both W&H had their first patronage about her age. I hope she's doing great at St. Andrew's University.
We've seen more of Louise and James at public events in the last 20 months and it's been enjoyable to see them to grow in confidence and maturity over that time period.

Quote from: HistoryGirl2 on May 24, 2023, 07:10:01 PM
I?m referring to money for funeral costs, not just saying it?s unfortunate. Did she give them money?
I don?t think so!!
Well, I do hope that?s forthcoming. It doesn?t have to be publicized, but losing a loved one is difficult enough, I would expect covering the funeral costs would be the least they could do even if it was just a tragic accident and not negligence.
I can?t remember whether Prince Philip (or the RF) paid the medical costs for that lady whose car he smashed into with his own vehicle near Sandringham a few years ago now. Of course she wasn?t elderly but I do remember she suffered something like a broken ankle in the crash. She only spent a few days in hospital but she was shaken up and not happy. AFAIR he sent her a card and wrote her a letter profusely apologising. I do NOT believe there was any talk of PP paying her medical or vehicle expenses. At least the newspapers didn?t mention any monetary compensation.
This incident is much more serious of course in that involves death. However, the police officer involved would either have been a Met officer or employed as a motorcycle patrol officer by the borough or shire police force. I believe the police have a process by which the police investigate incidents like this and if there are any expenses occurring as a result of police action then the civilian or his family apply and the police pay from their funds, eventually anyway.
While that is underway (or even afterwards) I don?t believe it would be appropriate for Sophie to offer to pay for the funeral. No doubt it would be seen as a nice gesture by the public and media but that might well affect the investigation, the culpability (or not) of the motorcycle cop and any disciplinary action. I think she should keep out of it. Send flowers, write a note to this old lady?s family expressing sorrow, but other than that steer clear.
In my opinion, that?s precisely why it doesn?t matter. It?s not about whether the public find it to be a nice gesture because this isn?t about publicity. I wouldn?t publicize it at all. It?s about doing a nice gesture for the family who has just lost a loved one, precisely because she?s more than financially capable of doing so.
?Well wishes? sounds almost callous to me. But because it says she?s in touch with the family, I?ll choose to believe that she has done the right thing and taken care of it behind closed doors, privately; the way it should be done. As any honorable individual with means to help would do. I don?t foresee the investigation lasting long, so I?m sure it?s forthcoming because one thing that?s certain is that Sophie herself is not going to be charged.

Maybe it?s a British thing. I don?t know. However, news of a British royal paying the funeral expenses of anyone caught up in this sort of incident (and the news would seep out) would imo result in all sorts of reaction from the public and the media, none of it favourable. There would be those who would state that doing so must mean some sort of cover-up by the royal, to negate bad publicity and divert from him/her.
There would also be those who would believe, (entirely without merit) that BP ?is pulling a swiftie? and trying to damp down any official inquiry into the accident. In other words there would be people in Britain who would believe that BP interference into a police matter would be akin to perverting the course of justice. The Police Force should be impervious to any sort of background manoeuvrings and the Palace should keep out of it. That would be the view of many. A sort of ?what has Sophie/BP got to hide?? view.
And quite simply there is no precedent whatever for any royal paying any sort of expenses for any incidents in which others were harmed or injured. PP never offered to pay for car repairs or time spent off work for the woman he crashed into that day near Sandringham. Prss Anne never offered to pay for vet care or medical treatment due to injuries to other people?s children and animals her dog caused, for which she was hauled into Court years ago. The Queen?s corgis were inclined to bite footmen and soldiers on guard on occasion. There is no report of the Queen offering to pay for iodine, tetanus injections or band aids or anything of that sort.
It is in Britain just considered inappropriate for royals to do that sort of thing, even if it is/ would be a goodwill gesture.
^There is no precedent of it having been reported on; I don?t believe what they spend their private funds on is up for public consumption, nor should it be. I will repeat again, this isn?t about publicity. I?m not advocating Sophie calling up the Times to brag about any kindness she bestows on anyone; what she chooses to do privately is her business and the business of those she is communicating with. In this case, the family of the woman whose body was hurled across the street.
I?m not sure being British has anything to do with doing kind acts. It would be vulgar to report it and I don?t expect it to be. I simply hope that she has done something for that family in this time of suffering for them. And I don?t expect to see it headlining the Daily Mail. Not every good act by a royal person is reported on to get brownie points with the public, some at least, have a bit more tact than to splash every private conversation and interaction for all to see.

Not every good act by a royal person is reported on to get brownie points with the public.
What I put in my post was just trying to explain how such things are viewed in Britain.
And if Sophie had paid the news would have seeped out somehow.
If Sophie was so broken up about this lady?s death then why did she then turn up within 24/hours of the news of this woman?s death being reported, thoroughly enjoying herself at a horse show?
And for that matter, what was so darned urgent for Sophie to get to that outriders travelling at top speed were needed as escorts anyway? She is a minor royal, the wife of the King?s youngest brother, not some foreign potentate.
Believe it or not quite a few comments in the UK involve royals and others who consider themselves VIPs treating the main thoroughfares of Britain like their private highways. Travel at high speed, use two or even three back up cars and at least two usually four outriders to get to and from an engagement that is often regarded as not really necessary and ?making work? to allow them to justify their existence on the royal pay roll, via the Sovereign Grant.
In Britain I lived near Sandringham in Norfolk and stayed near Windsor, so I saw quite a bit of this sort of thing over the years.
^Whether they should or should not have police escort them is an entirely different argument. I, for one, don?t think Sophie or the police officer in question woke up wanting to fling a woman across the road on their way to a royal engagement, but hey, I guess anything?s possible.
And I don?t think the fact that she was laughing the next day means anything. I recently attended a funeral and the person?s mother and I were laughing about funny comments in her eulogy. I guess that somehow means we?re not sad he?s gone? I don?t think Sophie is required to be sobbing and in mourning for the next three months to prove she feels for the family. In fact, that?s my entire point, small, genuine kindnesses don?t require a camera crew to report on them.
Well, I don?t believe that Sophie paid for the funeral or offered to, or even thought about doing so. And from my knowledge of British people it would be considered by the vast majority to be completely inappropriate for her to do so. So I guess we will have to agree to disagree!
The BRF have access to MI5, MI5 has access to profiles. Family members are more likely to be spouses/partners and non adult children of employees than elderly mothers. There is no sign however that Helen was a woman who was scratching around for cash. My guess is that the family is m/c. I don?t think any gesture of a monetary gift from the RF would be taken up anyway.

I?m not sure why doing a good deed would ever be inappropriate. She?s not being accused of doing anything and she?s not under any sort of investigation.
It is a case between the Police and the lady's famly, not Sophie.
^Legally yes, but to me, compassion doesn?t come out of a requirement to get involved?if it did involve Sophie, that I would see as inappropriate because it would be like hush money. To me, a gesture like that comes out of compassion for their plight after a horrific accident. If you feel differently, that?s fine.
I think it woudl look very odd as if the family could not afford to pay for th lady's funeral.... I'd say vulgar and condescending.
I?d certainly not throw a bag of money at someone and imply they?re unable to pay. Something as simple as, ?Please let me know if there?s any way we can help during this terrible time? would suffice. There does exist tactful ways to address people. That way, the ball is in their court. If they want to make the request, they can; if they don?t need or want it, everyone moves on with their lives.
