I'm sad to read that :(

^^ Thanks, SC. I didn't see the death notice thread until after the notice of the fall. And when I tried to post at the death notice thread, I assume you were in the process of combining the two, because I was denied access. I was the two ships that tried to meet in the night. What I tried to post at the second thread was that it's so sad ... he was much, much to young, certainly to die that way. :(
Cindy
I agree, Cindy. Far too young to die. A reminder of just how precious life is and how easily it can be taken away.

I echo your thoughts, Trudie. I've been involved with the Elephant Family for just over 18 months now and the charity's work and projected ambitions are truly exceptional. Mark Shand initiated a truly wonderful vision for elephant welfare and his work will be sorely missed. This has been very sad news indeed and my sympathies extend to Mark Shands' family.
He was his own man and went his own way and did not live off the royal connections.
True sandy.
True, Trudie, he leaves a very young daughter of 19-20 years old. Seems he and his ex were very friendly even after divorce via pictures where they were each's escorts for things.
Seems this organization did very important work. Very worthwhile cause.
He may be dead, they those in this will continue the good work.
Good for the daughter, family of MS, there was no other party involved such as one of NYC's ladies OR men of the night via an agency or the streeets. You know the rags will run with crazy stories, but it was not so.
Thank Goodness his death was not at the hands of one of our KILLERS here. NYC doesn't need any bad press from one of their many criminals.
The bar was not some dive, trashy place. The man did nothing wrong.
Who said , falls can be dangerous...so true.
What , just an awful , bad, fatal accident.

QuoteCamilla and Charles 'Utterly Devastated' as Duchess's Brother Mark Shand, 62, Dies After Slipping and Smashing His head When He Left £1 Million Fundraiser in New York for His Elephant Charity
The Duchess of Cornwall was left ‘utterly devastated’ last night by the death of her younger brother in New York. Mark Shand, 62, suffered a head injury when he slipped and fell on the pavement on a night out in Manhattan. He was put on life support but doctors could not save him and he died 12 hours later.
Camilla, 66, was extremely close to her only brother, who was known for his swashbuckling travel books and passionate commitment to conservation.
A source close to her said: ‘The Duchess is up at Birkhall [her and Charles’s Scottish retreat] with the Prince at the moment and to say that she is devastated is an understatement. They are a very close family and even if they didn’t see each other every week – as was often the case with Mark – were in constant contact.
‘It is just the most tragic of accidents. No one can quite believe it has happened. He was always such a vital man, so full of life.’

This is very sad news. I can imagine that Camilla and the rest of the family are devastated. I have a what might seem like an obvious question, but are the Shands related to Princess Diana's mother, Frances Shand Kydd? I'm sure I've read that they're distant cousins or something like that, but I could be imagining things. Shand doesn't seem to be a very common surname, so I was just wondering.
Shand was Diana's mother's second marriage name.
I wondered that too.
Diana's mother married an Australian man with the surname Shand-Kydd. So, no relation.
Cindy
^^^ Thanks cinrit. :) Although I do think it's a little strange that their not related, as Shand doesn't seem to be a very common surname. However this can happen - just because you have the same surname as someone else, doesn't mean you're related. (One of my relatives used to claim that she was related to a famous person because they had the same surname, but they weren't, just as a personal example.)

At the time the Queen Mum died and soon after her funeral, Charles and Camilla flew to Scotland to claim his inheritance from her. I remember the story of Charles bringing Camilla to Craithie Church a place she could not go to in the Queen Mums lifetime. I don't think Camilla was all that fond of the Queen Mum considering how she told Charles she wanted no C and C wedding in her lifetime. This story sounds like romance novel drivel. PR ploy by Di's friend to whom she leaked? That doesn't make sense ...
^ Makes perfect sense to me Eri after all Diana has been dead almost 17 years and Charles and Camilla are closer to the throne. Kay does earn his living as a journalist and a royal one at that. He does need his job so why not cultivate and redeem himself to Charles and Camilla.
My point that it is wrong on many levels to use Mark Shand's death to write a promotion piece about how Camilla helped Charles in his grief over the Queen Mum. Totally irrelevant since this is not about Camilla and Charles but Mark Shand. The ones who should be written about are his next of kin including his lovely young daughter.
QuoteMark Shand - Obituary
Mark Shand, who has died aged 62, was the brother of the Duchess of Cornwall and a noted conservationist.
An adventurer in the best sense of the word, Shand never tied himself to anything so tedious as a full-time job. Among his earliest heroes was the 19th-century explorer Sir Richard Burton, and his exploits included riding on horseback through the Andes, journeying to Tibet and being shipwrecked in the western Pacific during a hurricane. His first book, Skulduggery (1987), told of an expedition to an uncharted territory in the Indonesian archipelago, Irian Jaya, which was said to be seething with cannibals.
All this might have degenerated into a life of exotic dilettantism. But while travelling in India in 1988, Shand come across an emaciated captive female elephant being used for begging purposes by her owners: “My mouth went dry,” he later wrote of the moment when he first saw her. “I knew then that I had to have her.” He bought the animal, named her Tara and rode her 750 miles from Konarak on the Bay of Bengal to the Sonepur Mela, the ancient elephant trading fair at Patna on the Ganges. Travels on My Elephant (1992), his account of the journey, was a bestseller and won him the Travel Writer of the Year Award.

That's the way it should be Cindy (the articles you posted) and the press avoid the opportunity of playing up to C and C by bringing up an irrelevant story about the Queen Mum. The press did not have the bad taste to do this when Camilla's father passed on, I guess the media is on a feeding frenzy now to butter up C and C. Cindy, I know the daughter was mentioned but I still think dragging C and C spin into it is in poor taste. It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

QuoteUncle Mark is dead. Four words I never thought I'd write. It never even crossed my mind that Mark would cease to be.
Idiotic, I know, but such was the raw power of his personality, the blinding glare of his charm, the sheer force and magnetism of his character, that I never imagined life without him. None of us did. Other people die. Normal folk expire. Not Mark.
Death is for pencil-pushers, bank managers and pompous golf club bores. But now he's gone. Ripped from our grasp. Way before his time.

I'm glad he's paying tribute to his uncle. Better than his name dropping Sir that's for sure.
It's beautiful written. It helps you to see what a remarkable man he was and the strong influence he had on his nieces and nephews, and I'm sure, his daughter. I confess I never knew anything about him before.
The fact some had it in them to talk nonsense when the man's body wasn't even cold yet is mind blowing ...

Quote
When Charles' affair with Camilla was first made public by author Andrew Morton – and then by the execrable 'Camillagate' tape – the Prince could hide away while Camilla had the paparazzi camped on her doorstep.
In fact, as I revealed it was the 'outing' of Camilla which incensed the prince more than any other aspect of the whole sorry saga of his break-up with Diana – and he held her personally responsible for it.
Diana later told me how, ignoring her own despair at the unravelling of their lives, Charles had pointedly complained about 'poor Camilla' being thrust into the spotlight.
The irony remained with Diana for the rest of her life.
Quote
Camilla will now be hoping those princely qualities will be devoted to her. In recent months she had begun finding that her role as a full-time royal, taking on more duties as the Queen reduces her workload, had placed a barrier with her existence beyond palace life.
Her friends found it harder and harder to see her and, according to a close aide, this had made her lonely. 'It was no criticism of Charles, it was just a fact of life of the system,' says the friend.
The only people she saw regularly were the family: her children Tom and Laura and her grandchildren, and Annabel and Mark. Annabel and her husband, businessman Simon Elliot, had been an indispensable part of her transition into royal life after Diana's death in 1997.
Quote
[Camilla] has become the most valued figure in the life of the prince, one who has helped to soften him and soothe away those princely anxieties
Charles, says friends, will do 'whatever she wants'. As one close friend says: 'He loves her and he is a very kind and caring man. He does feel things keenly and he will be both shaken himself and hate watching her grief.
'So he will have to try and balance all the usual duty stuff with looking after her. Actually he is good at showing loving kindness – much more so than his parents.'
Ten years after their Windsor wedding, their marriage is more secure than ever. In a few short weeks it will be 20 years since Charles' television confession about his adultery with the then Mrs Parker Bowles, the third person in the Wales's crowded marriage.
Two decades on the woman once described as the 'most reviled in the country' occupies a position of affection with large swathes of the country.
We have come to appreciate the deep and affectionate relationship which exists between her and the Prince of Wales. She has become the most valued figure in the life of the prince, one who has helped
to soften him and soothe away those princely anxieties.
Now in the depth of the loss of her brother, it is Charles who must put aside other distractions to be the dependable figure in her life.
Is there any event not sacred or emotional enough to them that they wouldn't consider using it to advance their pr agendas?
The death of the Queen Mother was his darkest time?...She was very old, she had a great and grand life. What about the premature death of Diana, the Mother of his children.
That is exactly what my friend said a few minutes ago, she lost her husband 15 years ago, and she said telling her young boys (11 & 6) that he was dead and watching them cry and grieve tore her up even more than her own grief...
Charles was the one who named Camilla--he confessed adultery then his secretary publicly confirmed that Camilla was the one he cheated with. Morton never named Camilla "mistress" to Charles and Charles friends denied that there was any affair. Charles does not seem a kind and caring person to me. And neither does Camilla. Charles never showed loving kindness to his first wife, he was downright nasty to her even making fun of her bulimia.
And pushing their agenda at the time of her brother's death is just poor taste.
I think it's the media that's pushing their agenda, not Charles or Camilla. The only thing we've heard from them about Mark's death is a notice that was put on Charles' website.
Cindy
It is subject to speculation if Charles PR team has anything to do with these promotional articles (that sound like bad romance novels) or is it the possibility that writers want to win points with C and C and possible get honors for journalism.
Eri, that is the media.
Sohie, I agree with that about his grandmother.
sandy and others, I agree it is the meida who want to get in favor at any and every turn spewing stories like these and not PC and not C and their TPTB.
These British reporters who are fans of PC and C will SAY ANYTHING at ANY turn on ANY ANGLE to promote the story of PC and C.
Wait for it.
I know it is coming closer and closer that Camilla practically raised Diana's sons by guiding PC.
Here, Camilla lost her dear brother. She will be able to put in a way to move from her grief and onto her good memories. her sister and her children and Camilla's children will to. You accept a death at some point and move on, live on. Different death's are different. GE, the QM was the death of an old lady who lived several lives. She lived to see great grandchildren.
Diana left two teen boys ( teen and preteen).
MShand's daughter will take more time, naturally , to accept and live on. She is very young, although an adult, but is getting out there to live her life.

I agree. The couple has made a simple statement and for now nothing else has been stated.
I am not so sure that Kay's article did not have Charles' seal of approval. He always hides behind other people even though he might be responsible for this sort of PR. Lots of smoke and mirrors.

A most inspirational and kind man. I do find it a sad pity though that the media cannot leave the family alone during the funeral service.
:goodpost: Orchid. It would be better for the family to be left alone.

Agreed-- the photo of Camilla crying was heart wrenching.
Strange BP didn't issue a polite request asking papers not to print them, a la the Cambridges.
I could have done without seeing these photos. It should have been private. And it was a bit over the top with the headline saying Camilla was "leading" the mourners. It was not a parade it was a celebration of Mr Shand's life. Mark Shand's closest next of kin is his daughter and it would be fairer to say that the family was "leading" the mourners.

Thanks Lady Adams for the photo of floral display inside the church. A perfect tribute to Mark.

Agreed on all levels, I am having the hardest time making sense of the daughter in these pictures, and the fact that these pictures are taken at all at any funeral, and the fact that Charles has impeccably fitted suits and his much younger sons... Well, we all have seen them... :orchid:
I've heard elsewhere that Tatiana Santo Domingo (wife of Andrea Casiraghi, Albert II of Monacos's nephew) was at the funeral. I'm not sure how she's connected to the Shands, it would be interesting to know. :hmm:
On another note, I agree with sandy on the photos. It was meant to be a private funeral.
I guess if you're well-known enough, or connected to someone well-known enough, the media will be all over your funeral. The first time I saw such intrusion was in the mid-80's when Sir Michael Redgrave died. I happened to be in London at the time, and I remember watching the news of the funeral on TV, the cameras panning to close-ups of Vanessa and Lynn, both of whom were sobbing. I was appalled....
Cindy
^It was a private affair which meant there were no cameras inside the service, but as people were walking in and out of the church the photographers were there.
^^ Yes ... and same for Michael Redgrave's funeral. Intrusive even if outside, IMO.
Cindy
I think the daughter dressed that way as a salute to his life's work -
I suspect that the media was allowed because it does humanize Camilla and for people who still dislike her - perhaps may make them more sympathetic.
I meant her joy, I didn't have it in me that soon, especially because it was unexpected, but we all have different spirits and move on at different speeds. :happycry:
Don't forget, Mr. Shand's daughter is technically still an adolescent, and at this stage of her life she may not quite realize the significance of her loss. I've known two who lost important family members at 13 and 18 - they didn't really deal with it until they were older. I realize that sounds strange, but it is true. Possibly that's what is going on here.
I agree, teenagers nowadays mature differently and it depends on the family as well, I have never seen teens or adolescents quite like that especially with an unexpected death of a parent, but, people are different, my inability to grasp it does not signify more than that, I don't understand extremists, how people can consider clubbing baby seals acceptable, fans of famous people who lose perspective where they are concerned or wearing underwear as clothes either... :blahblahblah:
I'm in total agreement with you on all that stuff, Limabeany! I wish I had not seen the pictures as the family were arriving and leaving - I felt as if I were intruding on their privacy, just by looking at them. But, I did see them, and saw that Camilla is really feeling the loss of her brother.
