Honestly if I had to award a prize for the "Most Improved" royal couple, IMHO it's King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde. Phillipe was often viewed as a um...somewhat dim future monarch, but truly he's proven to be quite a stabilizing figure in a country that is split by language and economic concerns. He's gracefully welcomed his half-sister into the family fold after his father finally recognized her. Together with Queen Mathilde, he's raised a beautiful family with an heir who appears to be well prepared for her future role.

The Belgian Court has released information about the upcoming National Day. It confirms that the King's newly recognized half-sister Princess Delphine and her husband will be present. The King's two other siblings Princess Astrid and Prince Laurent will also be in attendance. IMHO King Phillipe has been very welcoming to Delphine and her family since her official recognition.

Terrible flooding across parts of western and central Europe now with Belgium, the NL and Germany being heavily affected. Admittedly I'm glad that our extended family live far away from the river zone in their communities.

More on their visit today.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visit province devastated by floods ? Royal Central

QuoteBad weather has been affecting the Germany-Belgium-Netherlands area for about two days, and damage is already evident.

And while Germany seems to have the highest price to pay, Belgium?s Li?ge province seems to be heading for disaster as well.

Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde travelled there on Thursday afternoon and visited a shelter that welcomed people who had to be urgently evacuated because of severe flooding in their residences.

They also visited a first response coordination centre and listened to firefighters, police, and volunteers? struggles, as well as the forecast for the next few days.

Thursday was a challenge for first responders since visibility was below the line considered safe to fly, and therefore air rescues were halted in fear of helicopter accidents. On Friday morning, the Ministry of Defense has deemed the conditions safer to fly in, and therefore a first helicopter has departed from Brussels to help in the rescue missions of people stranded in flooded areas.

This has certainly been eighteen months to remember in various parts of the world, a terrible pandemic, bushfires, and severe flooding. Floods are absolutely dreadful. Among my first memories are the terrible floods that affected the east coast of England where many people had to be rescued from their homes. My thoughts are with the people of that area of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium that is affected.

Is the service for Belgium's National Day usually held in Sainte-Gudule Cathedral?

Has there been an unofficial marital separation for troubled Prince Laurent and his wife Claire? They haven?t been seen together since Feb 2020 and she didn?t turn up to any National Day commemorations.

Report on it on Royal Musings blog by respected blogger on all things royal Marlene Koenig.

Many of the services that involve State events ie royal weddings and funerals along with Thanksgiving services are often held at this historic cathedral in Brussels.

QuoteThe Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula serves as the co-cathedral of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, the Primate of Belgium, who is currently Archbishop Jozef De Kesel. Due to its importance and its location in the national capital, it is often used for Catholic ceremonies of national interest, such as royal marriages and state funerals.[12] For example, in 1999, it was the setting for the wedding of Prince Philippe and Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz.

Belgium?s king and queen cancel engagements after family member contracts Covid ? Royal Central

QuoteKing Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians have cancelled their forthcoming engagements after an unnamed member of their family tested positive for coronavirus.

The king and queen will limit all their contacts in the coming days as a precaution after a ?younger? member of their family was found to have Covid.

Philippe and Mathilde have taken PCR tests which have come back negative but will remain in isolation as a precuation.

It?s not been announced which member of the royal family has the virus although royal officials said it was one of the ?younger children?. Philippe and Mathilde are parents to Princess Elisabeth, 19, Prince Gabriel, 18, Prince Emmanuel, 15, and Princess Eleonore, 13. No details were given, either, on the state of health of the member of the family who has contracted Covid.

All the engagements scheduled for Philippe and Mathilde, up to and including Monday September 6th, have been cancelled.

Add another Belgian royal to the sick and disabled roster. Now it's the King's sister Astrid who has injured herself. The Princess' official visit to the United States will be postponed.

QuoteOn Friday, the Belgian Royal Palace announced that Princess Astrid had fractured several vertebrae while exercising.

According to the press release, the accident happened during ?a sports activity in the private sphere,? according to the press release. Fortunately, Her Royal Highness did not have to be hospitalised but will have to rest and recover at home.

As a result of the accident, Princess Astrid?s agenda has had to be suspended indefinitely, pending her recovery, making her the third royal in Belgium to have to do so. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde had to also cancel their planned activities up to and including Monday the 6th of September following close contact with a younger member of the family who has tested positive for COVID-19.

More on her upcoming trip.

QuoteBecause of the difficult recovery from vertebrae fractures, it is possible that Princess Astrid will have to postpone her planned trip to the United States of America, where she was supposed to be travelling from the 2-9 of October on behalf of the King, touching down in New York City, Boston and Atlanta.

The trip, a whopping eight and a half hour plane journey, was supposed to focus on medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, the farm and food sector, climate change solutions through new technologies, smart economy and audiovisual.
