My mum said that my dad  (who died at 72) never recovered from the suicide of his mother when he was a child.  It affected him always, christmas was the worst and his birthday.

QuoteWilliam talks about his mother's dedication to children's charity

21 years ago, Child Bereavement UK was launched by Princess Diana. The organisation supports families of children who have died or children who are dying, as well as it supports children who have lost a parent.

Today, Diana's son, Prince William, is royal patron of the charity, and so he attended the 21st anniversary dinner last week. Here, giving a speech, he remembered his mother and her great dedication to the cause.

"What my mother recognised back then -– and what I understand now — is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure," William said referring to the pain he himself experienced following his mother's targic death in 1997.

It's unfortunate that cyberbullying is causing girls to suffer from eating disorders and boys to commit suicide. More people should definitely find drastic actions prevent it. As a father, Prince William is very concerned about this issue. He has a new cyberbullying plan with ideas to end the problem and will speak to the Founders Forum soon.

QuotePrince William Partners with Social Media Giants in Plea to End Cyberbullying

Having children can open your eyes to conditions and events that may have before passed your notice. Many people have commented on how parenthood has changed their perspective of the world and helped them to reassess their priorities. Seemingly, Prince William is not to be an exception to this anecdote.

Speaking recently to the Founders Forum conference in Watford, His Royal Highness has issued a general call to arms against cyber bullying and harassment of young people via the internet and social media to the investors, developers and online companies present at the conference. After a lighthearted warning not to spoil the results of the England vs. Wales football match that was taking place the same day, Prince William discussed how widespread and essential communications technology has become within the past fifteen years, and how this has brought into public debate their potential use for more subversive activities and interactions, such as extremism, invasion of privacy, and security of personal data. In particular, it's capacity for new and increasingly invasive means of harassing and bullying one's peers.

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE VISIT THE BBC TO HIGHLIGHT WORK TO COMBAT CYBERBULLYING

Broadcasting House, London

Thursday 15th November 2018

To mark Anti-Bullying Week, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit The BBC to view the work the broadcaster is doing as a key member of The Duke?s Taskforce on the Prevention of Cyberbullying.

Their Royal Highnesses will meet young people who wrote and performed in a new campaign video for ?Stop, Speak, Support?, which is a youth-led code of conduct to provide guidance on what to do when they witness bullying online. The campaign was started by the young persons? panel on the Taskforce and is now being run by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, which is rolling out materials to thousands of schools across the country.

The Duke and Duchess will also meet parents and children who have been helping guide the latest tech developments from the BBC to help young people online, and join BBC Director General Lord Hall as he announces the broadcaster?s latest initiative. Further details will be confirmed in due course.

His Royal Highness and The Royal Foundation convened the Taskforce in May 2016, to support young people and their families affected by cyberbullying, with a focus on 11-16 year olds.

The Duke brought together some of the world?s most recognisable names in media and tech, as well as children?s charities and parents, to work alongside a panel of young people to try and find a way forward. Together they set themselves the task of creating a safer and more supportive life online.

Chaired by tech entrepreneur Brent Hoberman CBE, the Taskforce members include: The Anti-Bullying Alliance; Apple; BT; The Diana Award; EE; Facebook; Google; Internet Matters; Music.ly; NSPCC; O2; Sky; Snapchat; Supercell; TalkTalk; Three; Twitter; Vodafone and Virgin Media.

The Duke of Cambridge is planning to reach out to the family of 14-year-old Molly Russell, who took her own life after viewing disturbing material online, it is understood.
Prince William is expected to contact the teenager's relatives by letter this week as part of his work around cyber-bullying.
Molly, from Harrow, north-west London, was found to have viewed content on social media linked to anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide before ending her life in November 2017.

Earlier this month, a pre-inquest review hearing heard police say were confident they could access Molly's electronic devices to view the internet history data.
The duke has previously spoken out about social media companies and their responsibilities to stop the spread of harmful material online.
In a speech at BBC Broadcasting House in London in November, he accused tech giants of 'being on the back foot' when tackling issues such as cyber bullying, fake news and hate speech.
'I had doubts being cast about the scale of the problem.
'I was told companies were already doing plenty, and just needed more credit for it.
'I saw denials about the ages of young children who are using  some of our most popular platforms.'

This is such a terrible issue, and I'm glad William is highlighting it in this way. Adolescence is a stressful time for many,  filled with self doubt, insecurity, and the desire to be accepted by their peers. They often have suicide ideology that as adults we would never expect or understand. But the scariest thing is the copy-cat suicide attempts.  I think the Cambridge's are correct when they say that you counteract with frank and helpful discussions about mental health.  Meanwhile, those poor parents. - can't imagine what it's like for them now.

Social media does get out of hand at times I feel. Some comments are "too much". And it gets overwhelming even for adults.
Imagine how teens feel?

Yes, you are right, but the cat is out of the bag. How can content on social media be monitored? It's probably best to teach the young how to deal with cyber bullying and other bad behavior and not do it themselves.  It's the parents' responsibility, at least at this point, so I cringe when I see very young (like pre-teens) on their phones, ignoring everything else around them.  I'm sure they didn't purchase those phones by themselves. Ugh.

The majority of are vendors or jobs on the go (tiger world compare and contrast customer service, delivery service, technical assistance, etcetera, WIFI sale point from any of these domicile services, at your place in 2 to 30 minutes) rather than the sitting at the office 9 to 5. The other group of people are millennials (students, recent grads) or housewives or trust fund babe with A Contact Book.

If you do not belong to any of the above, one can safely say your life is a sit in office (any job that's in a building, school), you contacted from office or home the whatever need in this tech world, so you have no need to call again whilst doing errands. You are not a millennial.

Yes I wonder what is driving men on the Thames to harm themselves at such a high rate. I'm glad that men's mental health is one of the primary focuses for the Heads Together campaign. Sadly the stigma of discussing men's mental health remains among the population. For example I still see abusive comments on the tabloid forums directed at those who suffer from mental illness, those attempting to seek help, mental health providers and at those public figures who are trying to encourage people to seek assistance. While I do understand that there are unfortunately long waiting lists for those seeking help via the NHS, at least there are long standing programs ie Samaritans or newer ones like Shout where people can try to find someone willing to listen to them.

But they are doing their best to bring it in to the open through the Football Association and other masculine avenues. Even the Prince of Wales is getting involved. They keep saying that addressing your mental health is no different than addressing your physical health - I do hope they understand that this will take some time and they shouldn't expect it to fall completely into place immediately. I know they've done a lot of research, studying and planning.  It is certainly a worthy endeavor, and poor mental health is a root cause of so much violence, unhappiness, and pain. Good on them!

I really wish when William went this week to Wembley Stadium there would be the entire football team and workers, but it is still a taboo, despite the video with famous footballers and England's coach, the date of visit at the stadium per se was not so encouraging - just a very few people; some white and blue collared men/women and a few sports people rather than crowds of Wembley footballers and employees.

@Princess Cassandra you are right though with it won't all happen in one day. Checking the KP twitter sight, one can tell they persist with the subject of MH, so that is encouraging. Including this Thames Campaign, apparently not only accidents but suicide attempts of self harm is something going on. I bet William will give a speech notifying the percentage per year.

True for Rugby and American Football.

William's long term project with HeadsUp mental health is a message for everyone through the very popular UK sport of football (soccer for Americans)

Hopefully it will be taken by Harry, his Royal Patronage with the sport of Rugby is 'superior' than that of William.

Harry: Royal Patron of the Rugby Football League (all of the UK)
William: Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (only Wales)

Head injuries is typical for the sport of Rugby rather than Football (soccer for Americans)

Ah I see the difference. I originally thought that The Rugby Union was just for England.
So that would be cast a wider net than Weslsh Rugby-William and Scottish Rugby-Anne.

William IS the Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Quote from: sandy on January 29, 2020, 03:11:03 PM
Superior, how so?

Superior that Harry is the Royal Patron of the ENTIRE rugby football league, in other words, all the rugby teams in the United Kingdom, the compilation of the national teams of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each of these national teams have patrons, i.e. William for Welsh (Wales) team, Anne for the Scottish team.

Hence Harry was at the World championship in Japan 2019.

The Duke cut a smart figure in a khaki sweater, blue shirt and navy suit as he met members of the organisation to discuss the charity's three main projects.

Established in 1988, Everton in the Community uses the power of sport to motivate, educate and inspire, and is an exemplary model of a club harnessing its influence to support its fans and address key social issues affecting the local community.
The Duke visited three of the charity?s projects which provide crucial mental health support to different sectors of society.

The projects inlcude Stand Together, a programme which tackles social isolation amongst those aged 70+ living in Merseyside; Everton Veterans Hub, a project which uses sport to engage and support ex-service personnel; and Tackling the Blues, a sport and education-based programme targeting children and young people experiencing mental health challenges.

its a non contact sport, as far as I can recall.  Rugby Union is a lot rougher...

Harry with the 'superior' rugby patronage went once to a rugby head injury charity.  That is the no. 1 common injury in that sport.

Back to the subject of the thread, William is reaching via Football (Soccer for Americans) his mental health HeadsUp project, because that is the most watched sport in the UK.

Back to the out of topic, in Football (soccer for Americans) the no. 1 injury is knee injuries.

Attention should also be paid to head injuries of athletes that cause brain damage. It is a serious issue.
Yes indeed, and hopefully these professional athletes have joined in with him for this very reason. They are all aware that head injuries usually lead to severe mental health issues, just as in American football and soccer. We'll have to read about it to see if head trauma illness is discussed as a cause.

Revelations about head injuries in contact sports are getting so much attention, where ten years ago it was just not discussed much at all. That is sure to save a lot of lives, I'm sure!
PS: I was always concerned about my children's safety in their sports, riding and rowing. We were able to find state-of-the art riding helmets, which was good. Rowing does not bring a danger of head injury, but when their college career ends those who participate have problems with almost every joint in their body. That is still not discussed as far as I can tell.

Mouth guards are also important. To prevent injury to teeth. Dentists recommend them to people who participate in sports.

Quote"We built a little bit of a platform with Head Together a few years ago where we tried to chip away at the stigma and taboo of mental health. One of the last bastions of maleness that seemed to be quite difficult to reach was the football community.

"We felt that there was an awful lot of opportunity here with football - 16-odd million people around the country follow football - and I thought we could use the power of the sport and really elevate mental health to another level and allow people to have that conversation and understand that it's OK to talk and it's OK not to be OK.

"Those sorts of conversations have started, culminating in the FA Cup final being renamed, effectively, the Heads Up FA Cup. I think that's going to be quite a nice thing to hang the campaign on for the year.

I hope the Heads Up (and Heads Together) is a long term project until the stigma of speaking about it with family, friends and seeking professional help, the figures/percentages go down.

It's quite sad when public figures commit suicide, the latest a very well known presenter in the UK who was going through a very terrible time in her career (sacked) and personal life (evidence of battery towards her then partner), Caroline Flack RIP.   It should also be an eye opener for thousands of people who are in a hard place.

They can do so much as promote MH, the government can make laws and invest in public social services too with stricter media laws i.e. Caroline Flack's (social media and all outlets trolling), I understand and heard it is a very complex issue, halted discussions because it has to be equal for all genders.  The blaming to the media (from mostly feminists and a few men) whilst there is sufficient proof CF battered her partner, IF a law passes, then men too who carry out domestic violence and allegedly are suffering from Mental Health will be required with the hashtag and law #BeKind.  IMO, the law won't pass.

And yet kudos to those who are promoting Mental Health conversation.

Royal Foundation Taskforce on the Prevention of Cyberbullying

In response to an increase in tragic consequences resulting from cyberbullying, The Duke of Cambridge brought together leading tech companies, NGOs and independent advisers in a Taskforce chaired by Brent Hoberman CBE, to tackle this critical issue. ABA are very proud to be members of this taskforce.

About
The Taskforce?s Action Plan was launched during Anti-Bullying Week in November 2017 and includes safety guidelines to ensure children and young people are kept safe on social media and gaming platforms, alongside a commitment to improve the awareness and understanding of the issue amongst children, parents and other influential adults. The Taskforce is also piloting the provision of emotional support at the point of reporting content within Facebook and Snapchat.

Through my work on mental health, I have spent time getting to know parents and children for whom the impact of online bullying has been devastating. And as a parent myself, I understand the sense of loss and anger of those particular families who have lost children after they were the targets of campaigns of harassment.

Lucy Alexander reveals how son's death from bullying inspired her kindness campaign and how Prince William has helped.

Writing exclusively for HELLO!'s Kindness Digital Issue, mother-of-three Lucy praised both Prince William and Kate for their work around mental health and for helping reduce the stigma around the once-taboo subject. She also shared her journey and inspiration behind her kindness campaign, her hopes for her son Felix to be remembered not as a victim but as a catalyst for change, and calls for more practical action to be taken in mental health.

Prince William describes his mental health crisis  in his Apple podcast. It appears that this was brought on  in 2017 after William assisted in an emergency call while working for  East Anglia Air Ambulance. A young boy who is close in age to George was seriously injured and suffered brain damage.  :(

The Cambridges and Prince Harry launched Heads Together in on May 16, 2017. Prince Harry was very candid about discussing his own mental health concerns and subsequently Catherine and William have also shared their own personal stories regarding their own mental health. However I believe that this is the first time that William has gone into more detail. I'd suspected that William's had to do with what he and the EAAA team were encountering during calls.

Prince William's mental health crisis: Duke reveals he was engulfed by a dark cloud of depression | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10275927/Prince-Williams-mental-health-crisis-Duke-reveals-engulfed-dark-cloud-depression.html)

QuotePrince William has revealed that he was engulfed by a dark cloud of anguish and depression after witnessing the aftermath of a devastating accident.

In a remarkable display of candour, the Duke vividly describes how his torment left him feeling as if 'the whole world was dying'.

His mental health crisis came after he helped to save the life of a gravely injured boy only a few years older than his son, Prince George, while working as a helicopter pilot for the air ambulance service.

In an extraordinarily frank podcast to be released tomorrow, the future King describes how he was deeply affected by what he experienced that day.

Overwhelmed by depressive feelings, he says it was as if 'something had changed' inside him.

Weeks later his despair intensified. As he describes it, it was 'like someone had put a key in a lock and opened it without me giving permission to do that'.

He adds: 'You just feel everyone's pain, everyone's suffering. And that's not me. I've never felt that before.
The Prince describes how talking to colleagues and meeting the boy's family enabled him to conquer his demons over time.

It is understood that William was referring to a car accident which left five-year-old Bobby Hughes brain damaged in 2017.

Last night, the boy's mother, Carly, 40, said: 'William told us how it affected him as a father and how he felt our pain.'

'He's amazing, a credit to our country... I've looked into his eyes and, genuinely, he has got a kind heart.'

The Prince gave a remarkable insight into his state of mind in an intimate 38-minute programme entitled Prince William: Time To Walk, recorded for an Apple audio series in which celebrities share memories and pick three favourite songs while taking a stroll.'

The late Diana, Princess of Wales was an early supporter of the Child Bereavement trust which was launched in 1994  Her good friend Julia Samuel was the founder of the trust. Had Diana lived, I believe that she would have continued to work with the organization. Julia maintained a close relationship to the Wales brothers after Diana's death and she was present at the 2021 unveiling of the Diana statue at Kensington Palace. Her eldest son asked Julia to be one of the Godmothers for Prince George.

The stark contrast of Catherine's speech during the couple's first MH week filled with positivity, learning to  strengthen your inner self to have good MH and be better equipped to handle the external challenges everyone encounters. The external challenges examples were pandemic, conflict and the fast changing world.

Whilst the SIL and BIL speech was asking for censorship.  For those who do not know ALL social media applications 'can' be blocked from children. Fact.
