QuoteIn a book published to mark the Diamond Jubilee two years ago David Cameron offered some insights on the benefits of his weekly audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

As David Cameron apologises for his gaffe we reveal the very different dealings our monarch has shared with the 12 premiers of her reign

He spoke of her knowledge, commitment and "time-tested wisdom" but there was one quality that transcended even those. "Above all she has an abundance of what I would call 'Great British common sense'," he mused.

The monarch could be forgiven for wishing some of that common sense had rubbed off on the PM himself following his gaffe in the United States this week. Breaking the convention that all his conversations with her should remain confidential he told former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg that the Queen had "purred down the line" when he told her the Scottish independence campaign had failed to win a majority.

Aside from confusing our 88-year old sovereign with Eartha Kitt he evidently didn't realise that if you are going to reveal that a head of state has a strong opinion on a political matter that has divided millions of her citizens and on which she is meant to be impartial it is best not to do so in front of a phalanx of cameramen with ultra sensitive microphones.

Always be yourself.  Unless you can be a unicorn.  Then always be a unicorn.

It would be fascinating to know what the Queen's real opinion is of all the Prime Ministers who've served during her reign. If she got on with Mrs Thatcher and Tony Blair the least, however, then she showed good taste and sense!

Thank you for the article. TBH we'll likely not know her thoughts unless her private diaries are shared.
