Title: William:Centrepoint Patron and other charities related to the homeless
Post by: wannable on December 17, 2014, 12:20:30 PM
I don't think William administers the Centrepoint twitter, although it's nice to read from their Twitter conversation with Gordon Rayner, a Royal correspondent, that William "often" does private visits.

^^ They tweeted about her hair because William made a comment about it to a trainee hairdresser at Centrepoint, calling it a "nightmare" because it's so curly and has to be straightened.  Limabeany started a new topic about it here: Middleton: Duchess of Cambridge's hair is a "nightmare" says Prince William (http://www.royalinsight.net/forum/index.php?topic=73373.0;topicseen)

Frankly, from what I have seen lately, I believe that this new pr guy is reading forums and criticism and acting accordingly to counterattack. The fact that most negative comments are being red arrowed to death since he assumed his position, for example and the timing of the George photographs for no reason, Kate and the wedding...  :hmm:

A couple of weeks before Christmas is a good time to release the pictures of George.  And neither William nor Kate look very happy to be spotted going into the wedding, so I'd wonder if PR had anything to do with it.  Sometimes it's PR, and sometimes it just is what it is.

QuoteThe Duke Of Cambridge Chats About Jobs, Health And Hair With Homeless Young People

Getting a job, interview techniques, healthy breakfasts and his wife's hair were just some of the chats between Centrepoint Patron The Duke of Cambridge and homeless young people during a visit.

The Duke of Cambridge visited our newly refurbished health and wellbeing centre in Soho, London, ton Wednesday morning to meet young people, staff and some of the UK's top business leaders for a special mentoring session.

First up was a healthy eating session run by healthy living advisor Dominic Lane, which focuses on how to cook, tackling health issues through diet and boosting confidence with new skills. The Duke and young people Ben, Amy and Angel made healthy breakfast combinations of nuts, dried fruit and seeds, along with flavoured waters and smoothies.

QuotePrince William has written a letter urging the readers of the Independent to support the paper's Christmas appeal. The appeal supports Centrepoint and the valuable work it is striving to do for the young homeless as we head towards, not only Christmas but also towards what is forecast to be the coldest Winter for five years. The charity, which has Prince William as Patron, is endeavouring to launch a helpline for those either homeless or at risk of being homeless between the ages of 16 and 25.

They estimate that across Britain this Christmas 25,000 young people are at risk of being homeless, and in a recent survey they found 1 in 3 young people who turn to local councils when faced with this crisis in their lives are turned away unaided.

The Duke told the Independent: "Ending youth homelessness is not just about putting a roof over someone's head. It's about teaching a young person to read and write. It's about helping them live with the consequences and abuse and neglect. It's about stopping people becoming homeless in the first place. As a society, we have a duty to help our most vulnerable young people."

From the Centrepoint website regarding the interaction that their patron has had with their clients over the years.

QuoteIn the past ten years, Prince William has met many of our young people. Sometimes cameras are there, but often they're not – a chance for him to talk openly about their experiences and futures. We know that he has been a great inspiration to them, and to us. One of our favourite moments was during his visit to our Camberwell service in 2011 with his wife, The Duchess of Cambridge. Prince William was snapped doing the now infamous 'swag dance' with young person Vanessa! He regularly meets the Centrepoint Parliament across our services, taking time to listen to their experiences and learn about what Centrepoint is doing to support them.

Here is some background information on William and Centrepoint. From the charity's website: Our Patron Prince William | Centrepoint (https://centrepoint.org.uk/about-us/who-we-are/our-patron/)

QuoteHRH The Duke of Cambridge has been Centrepoint's Patron since 2005.

Centrepoint has always been close to the Prince's heart. As children, Princes William and Harry made private visits to Centrepoint services with their mother, the late Diana Princess of Wales, who herself was Centrepoint's Patron.

He does on the average about 3-4 public visits with them per year. He's made three in 2017.  However he's been known to make non-publicized visits to their offices and sites according to their director.
QuoteCentrepoint chief executive Seyi Obakin said the Duke often paid unreported visits to residents and staff: "The campaign would not have been nearly as successful without the Duke.

"He stuck his neck out and said it's rotten and awful that youth homelessness is still happening in a country like ours.

QuotePrince William has chosen a young people's homelessness charity as the first to which he will be a patron.

The 23-year-old will be following in the footsteps of his mother, who became a patron to the charity in 1992.

Clarence House said William had spent the past two days working as a volunteer at Centrepoint.

He said he was "deeply concerned" for people, especially the young, "who find themselves living on the streets or without a proper home".

A speech by The Duke of Cambridge at the Launch of the Pledge150 Campaign, London | The Royal Family (https://www.royal.uk/speech-duke-cambridge-launch-pledge150-campaign-london)

QuoteUnrecorded, unnoticed, and too-often ignored ? these young people are the ?hidden homeless?.

Centrepoint, a charity that I have been proud to support for many years, estimates that well over 80,000 young people experience homelessness every single year.

When I meet young people in this situation, I see the very human face of this outrageous statistic, I hear the individual stories of young people who have lived through, or are living through, this situation now.

The Awards highlight the impact of the charity?s wider work, which includes providing young people with support in tackling physical and mental health problems and finding a job or route back into education.

Seven young people will be recognised on the night for their achievements in areas including education, sport and personal development. They will reflect the wide range of interests and skills that exist among the young people who use Centrepoint services, and recognise the significance of personal milestones for those who have
had to endure difficult situations in the past.

During the event, The Duke will present the awards and deliver a short speech about the charity?s work. His Royal Highness will also meet some of the young people who have been supported by Centrepoint over the years as well as the winners

The charity holds a special place in William's heart, as first visited the centre in 1993 with his mother, Princess Diana. The late Diana visited the charity regularly for over 25 years.William, who was just 11-years-old at the time, explained how visiting the centre made a "deep and lasting impression" on him.

Speaking at The Passage in 2016, William said: ?The visits I made as a child to this place left a deep and lasting impression upon me ? about how important it is to ensure that everyone in our society, especially the poorest, are treated with respect, dignity and kindness, and are given the opportunities to fulfil their potential in life.?

Yes, they all do IMO.  Just this past week a famous TV personality said in a BBC primetime live viewership that he was with William at the Grenfell DIY Construction think that the DOC had participated last year.  The guy mentioned this week that William since then writes letters to various Grenfell people who suffered and are with the scheme of the DIY Construction of homes and facilities.

As patron, the Duke of Cambridge will mark 50 years of Centrepoint during two engagements on Wednesday 13th November. Centrepoint provides homeless young people with accommodation, health support and life skills to get them back into education, training and employment.

Since starting out in the basement of St Anne?s Church in 1969, the organisation has grown to become the UK?s leading youth homelessness charity, supporting over 9,000 homeless young people a year.

His Royal Highness?s first visit of the day will be to Centrepoint?s new Apprenticeship House, which aims to support young people in their journey to independent living.

As part of a wider ambitious programme developing modular housing solutions in London and Manchester to support young people moving on from supported accommodation and into work, the charity has transformed an existing building in south London into a seven bed shared home for young people on apprenticeship programmes. The Duke will visit the house and chat to residents before officially opening the building.

In the evening, His Royal Highness will attend the Centrepoint 50th anniversary gala at the Roundhouse alongside residents of Apprenticeship House who he met earlier in the day. The gala will promote the achievements of individuals supported by Centrepoint, highlight the issues they face and encourage supporters to help change the story for homeless young people.

At the gala, the Duke will meet young people who have been supported Centrepoint before delivering a speech.

The Duke has been Patron of Centrepoint since 2005.

That is impressive! William is right to express frustration that youth homelessness is still such an issue...but it not just an issue in the UK, and it might be much worse if it weren't for organizations like Centerpoint.

Prince William's visit was the first royal visit to Mansfield since 1985 when his mother the late Diana, Princess of Wales visited.

QuoteWilliam then traveled to The Beacon Project in Mansfield to hear more about the facility and the people it helps.

This was the first visit to Mansfield by a senior royal since his mother Diana, then the Princess of Wales, visited the former mining town in 1985.

Founded in 2001, The Beacon Project is a day centre that helps the homeless and vulnerable population around Mansfield by providing ?a welcoming and safe place where people can get a hot meal, clean clothes and access to toilet and shower facilities,? according to its website.

When the Project began, only five people utilised its services, but now over 50 are taken care of on a regular basis.

Clearly a successful project!  Homelessness is, of course, an unhappy issue, but it is also an interesting one. I was part of a homelessness project in our area. I noticed that many (NOT ALL) of the people using the facility did not want permanent homes....they do not want that kind of life. For them, food, shelter from extreme cold, and toilet facilities (in that order) are what matters. So organizations that understand this and don't try to mold them into something the rest of us are is helpful and important. Sad fact of life, but there it is.

Yes, that is true of some longterm homeless people, and of course various forms of mental illness and/or addictions of various kinds are high among that sector.

I've been involved with homelessness in my social work for over twenty years however, and have found that a large part of the problem for others is high rent in the private sector caused by a dearth of public housing.

For people on inadequate social security incomes like single mums or the unemployed, crises can mean falling badly behind in rent arrears. This leads to eviction and then they couch surf or sleep in cars etc. Its an ongoing problem because governments never put enough money ever into affordable public housing.

@RE_DailyMail
I?m with the Duke of Cambridge as he visits Leeds to celebrate the welcoming, diverse, resilient communities across the region who have come together to support newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan to rebuild their lives. First stop, a hotel where the refugees are being housed.

William listened to some really traumatic stories today of people given hours - or sometimes minutes - warning to leave their homes, jobs and family.
Everyone he spoke to was hopeful of a bright future in the UK, but expressed fears for loved ones left behind in Afghanistan.

The community in Leeds - and across Yorkshire, in fact  - has come together in such a remarkable way to support those who arrived from Afghanistan. At their hotel there is a weekly playgroup for parents and young children.

He also met with families who experienced the relocation process six years ago who asked him to thank the British government - and the people of Yorkshire - for all they have done (one worked for the government and the other as a translator for the British military in Helmand )

More on Prince William's visit to Afghan refugees in Leeds today. :snowflake: Glad to see that so many who served as translators and in other functions for the British have been evacuated and are being resettled in the UK.

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge has visited Leeds to meet Afghan refugees as local councils promise to settle a thousand across Yorkshire.

Prince William came to a hotel in Leeds today, November 30, where refugees evacuated from Afghanistan are staying to hear their experiences.

Councils across Yorkshire have today also announced that 1,000 Afghan refugees will be resettled in the region.

Click here for more Leeds news and stories

The Duke of Cambridge came to Leeds to learn how Yorkshire charities and councils are helping refugees get settled.

All 15 councils in Yorkshire and the Humber have promised to resettle Afghan refugees whose lives are in danger in Afghanistan or who aided British forces.

There have 300 people resettled across Yorkshire and the Humber already.

Migration Yorkshire manages the Afghan Resettlement programmes for Yorkshire and the Humber and works closely with the Refugee Council and other charities.

Yorkshire and the Humber has been the first region in the UK to accept every major group of refugees since Kosovans arrived into Leeds Bradford airport under the Humanitarian Evacuation Programme in 1999.

Dave Brown, Head of Migration Yorkshire said: ?For those people who had to flee for their lives from Afghanistan, it was an incredible boost and an honour seeing the Duke of Cambridge, and also for all those who have worked tirelessly to support them.

After surprising healthcare workers (and cuddling a therapy puppy!), Kate Middleton and Prince William continued their royal outing in Lancashire on Thursday with a visit to Church on the Street, a charity that lifts people out of poverty while providing a space for worship.

The couple visited with Pastor Mick Fleming, who has dedicated his time in lockdown to supporting the homeless. Pastor Fleming ? a former drug dealer who is now known for his charitable efforts ? started Church on the Street in 2019 to help the homeless and people living in poverty in the town of Burnley, about 240 miles northwest of London.

Royal Family: Prince William praised for quietly selling Big Issue on London streets - MyLondon (https://www.mylondon.news/news/uk-world-news/royal-family-prince-william-praised-24182546)

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge has received huge amounts of praise after it came to light that he had recently spent a day quietly selling The Big Issue on Rochester Row in Westminster. Prince William donned the famous red hat and vest and was seemingly only recognised by one member of the public during his outing.

The images of the second-in-line to the throne selling the paper on the street were shared by retired Met Police Chief Superintendent Matthew Gardner on his LinkedIn account.

It is understood that he took to the streets to raise money for those in need and for homeless charities. Prince William has been working to promote the cause for many years ever since his mother, Princess Diana, took him to meet rough sleepers in London when he was very young.

More on the PoW's visit to DePaul UK today.

Information about Depaul.

QuoteWe work in local communities across the country to prevent and relieve the impact of homelessness on people?s lives. We prioritise young people, who are among the most vulnerable in society, and especially those who have previously had traumatic experiences. We are passionate about the difference we make.

The Depaul Group was founded in 1989 in response to the growing number of homeless London youth sleeping rough on the streets. Today, Depaul International charities work around the world, going where the need is greatest.

In the UK, we run services in the North East, South Yorkshire, Milton Keynes and Greater Manchester as well as London and the South East. We also manage and accredit the Nightstop Network of community volunteer hosting services, which operates in more than 30 communities around the UK.

The Prince of Wales is courting politicians, using official audiences with Michael Gove and Sir Keir Starmer to discuss homelessness.
The heir to the throne is preparing to begin a significant homelessness project in the coming weeks, around the time of his 41st birthday.
While the details remain under wraps, the Prince plans to brief several other politicians about it imminently.

''With the help of M-AR, we have turned 8 units into 33 homes in Peckham, which mean Centrepoint's young people now have comfortable, stylish, efficient and cost effective homes and most importantly the key to their very own front door.

Prince William prepares to launch major homelessness project
The Prince of Wales?s programme, which has been two years in the making, could define his legacy as he follows in his mother?s footsteps

The Prince of Wales has spent weeks courting political support and briefing ministers and civil servants on his plans.
The Prince of Wales is preparing to launch an ambitious homelessness project that could define his legacy.

It came ahead of a career defining moment next week when he will unveil a major, long-term homelessness programme that has been two years in the making.
Royal sources said the new project will demonstrate a modern approach to monarchy that goes beyond ribbon cutting and instead tackles one of the biggest challenges facing society today.
He has spent weeks courting political support and briefing ministers and civil servants on his plans, determined to create legacy and impact.

Those close to him suggest the project could have as big an impact on homelessness as his father's organisation The Prince's Trust has had on the lives of hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people.

Yes, I watched a video of Finland?s approach to homelessness a while ago, and I believe they have had tremendous success in this area. However their programmes require a great deal of govt intervention and supervision in a way that this Tory Govt or indeed any recent British Govt doesn?t appear to want to take on board so I?m not sure that it would work so well in the UK.

I do wish those involved with this project all the luck in the world, as if it helps even 5 people, it?s more than what would have been helped had it never been manifested.

However, the real problem in the UK (similar to the US) is that the government has capitulated their responsibility to their citizens. Finland tackled it the way it should be: an all hands on deck, multi-agency project done to benefit the nation as a whole. While I think the remarks toward William from the republican organization were unnecessary, I agree with the basic point.

The government is helping in W coalition, or at least that is what I understand from what I've read so far, next 5 years (ongoing if it works wells for all involved) Including the multiple CC's with government people he has had in the past 1.5 years, specifically some mentioning the reason of the meeting (s).

^Are these entire agencies though or is it individual based help? So, yes, you can build someone a home, but then do you have social workers in place to help people through the problems that caused homelessness to begin with? The funding in Finland was also provided by the state and it?s not a one-time thing. It?s almost like a cycle where people need to be supported in different ways throughout.

@HistoryGirl2 - The program in Finland does provide the support network of social and health care workers. So if the one if William is proposing is to be successful, it will require a similar amount of support which is where the British government will need to step in.

Before launching his initiative, it's worth noting William met with members of government, the leader of the opposition, as well the first ministers of Scotland and Wales. So he's certainly keeping members of parliament in the loop.

William may well be keeping them in the loop, however we all know what politicians are like. When the Tory Govt goes out, as it?s likely to, there?s no guarantee that future governments of whatever stamp will keep any housing programmes up for ever. And that is what is and will be, needed. For ever. One hundred years, two hundred, and so on.

It?s a piece of excellent IMO communal socialism for the good of their fellow citizens that Finns appear to have accepted, though it has not been without criticism there, (as allowing people to become dependent on the Govt.) Social Services work hand in hand with the Housing Ministry there. Don?t in the UK. Moreover, Finnish society is very different to British society. They don?t get the number of immigrants each year, most of them illegal, who need to be accommodated, for a start.

And I think that?s great; it?s really all William can do. But this is more a criticism of the establishment than the initiative itself. William shouldn?t be ?keeping members of parliament in the loop,? they should be spearheading the movement themselves. The private sector shouldn?t be tackling this issue themselves. It?s far too big an issue.

Aberdeen not exactly overcome by excitement at William?s visit to help the homeless then?

Footage shows lack of crowds for awkward Prince William Aberdeen visit | The National (https://www.thenational.scot/news/23618744.footage-shows-lack-crowds-awkward-prince-william-aberdeen-visit/)

?DID they not tell anyone he was coming?

That would be one explanation for the complete absence of any Union flag-waving crowds of royalists during Prince William?s visit to Aberdeen on Tuesday.

The number of journalists was far bigger than the number of people excited to see the noble Duke of Rothesay do some of the royals? trademark walking about and nodding at stuff.

In fact, two of those leaning on the fence ? apparently put there to keep the baying mob away from his highness ? seemed to be there by accident more than anything else.?

I don?t suppose Scotland is a place where you?ll have many supporters of the monarchy in general. But this isn?t about crowds or personal accolades for William. This initiative is going to take a lot of work and his most important task is getting the coalition as much information as possible as to what needs to be done and then brainstorming can be done to accomplish it.

I?m glad to see him out and speaking with people who have actually experienced homelessness to understand more about who he is helping. Hope to see more of this.

The Passage Charity
@PassageCharity

We had a great time at our Client's Christmas Party yesterday!🎄

A special thank you to our Royal Patron, Prince William @KensingtonRoyal, who joined us to prepare and serve food, and meet with those we support.

We hope everyone had just as much festive fun as we did🤗
