Her Highness Princess Elisabeth passed away quietly on Tuesday the 19th June 2018.

The Princess was Hereditary Prince Knud?s and Hereditary Princess Caroline-Mathilde?s first-born child and also the first grandchild of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine.

She was the first cousin of Queen Margrethe and as I recall had been in poor health for some time.

Yes, wasn't there controversy back when Prince Knud her father was passed over as heir in favour of Margrethe, the first female heir for centuries? At least it freed Elizabeth up for a very long and no doubt interesting diplomatic career, which she almost certainly wouldn't have had as the daughter of a King. No marriage, no children though, but a longterm relationship.

@Curryong-My parents had a neighbor who was originally from Denmark so she could always supply us with the "scoop" on Danish royals. Yes apparently the change in succession laws did cause some controversy but she always said that there was something "off" about Knud which meant that the population wasn't too upset by the decision. She never really explained what "off"meant though so this could have been her personal opinion.

Yes Elisabeth did lead a very interesting life for a young woman in post WWII Europe.  :)

'Off,'eh? Interesting. I may investigate! It might have been a bit of a Fred and Jaochim situation perhaps. We know that, in spite of certain opinions held on another forum, Fred and Mary are a very popular couple in Denmark. I once asked a Dane at TRF about why, in spite of being seemingly hard working and pleasant, Joachim and Marie are also-rans in approval ratings within Denmark. He remarked that there was an impression there that Joachim was quite stiff and pompous in comparison to his brother and not so personable. Perhaps it was the same with Fred and Knud, or he might have had a dark side. Who knows!

Later.
Right I've been over to the Alexander Palace Forum (invaluable on little nuggets about royal families. Found that the relationship between Knud and Frederik was never very warm. Knud married his cousin (who had the most enormous gnashers and a long mouth while he had a long nose) and produced Elizabeth and two sons.

The younger son Christian, was born during the war and apparently King Fred and Queen Ingrid took this badly as they had 'only girls' and Christian would have been the name of their son of course. However, Ingrid had terrible pregnancies and births and was advised not to have any more children after the third daughter was born. Knud became his brother's heir.

The constitutional changes had apparently been hanging around since 1915 and the Second World War delayed it even more. The Danish Press apparently played up the physical ugliness of Knud's family in comparison to strapping King Fred and Queen Ingrid and their three attractive daughters. (Perhaps that was the 'off' bit!) Knud seemingly blamed Ingrid for pushing for the changes but in fact  it was the politicians, though she wrote a letter thanking them!

Knud was apparently embittered for the rest of his life and the two families rarely spoke until after Knud's death in the 1970s. Elizabeth's brother (the older one) was going to be heir and admitted he was disappointed for a while but was  philosophical. Don't know whether he is still alive but he was highly ranked in spite of a non dynastic marriage and was granted an allowance for life because he would have been Crown Prince then King. Elizabeth of course never married so she remained a Princess of the Royal House of Denmark, though she had a long standing relationship with a filmmaker.

His elder son later told a journalist

@Curryong I know the forum, they have so much against Mary and Fred.  :hmm:  Its actually refreshing to hear that they are well-liked in Demark - you wouldn't believe it if you only read that other forum (that shall not be named).  :teehee:

Yes, Fred and Mary have actually come higher in opinion polls over the last few years than Queen Margrethe, which seems a bit surprising. Margrethe (Daisy) is still popular, but the Crown Prince family is very well liked and I think Danes want to see Fred as King before he gets too much older.

Princess Elizabeth will be buried beside her longterm partner Claus Hermansen, who made lots of documentaries, including several covert short films recording incidents for the resistance during the occupation of Denmark.

The funeral is going to be held at the family kirk. Apparently throughout the relationship she made it clear that she didn't want to marry because if she did so she would lose the privileges of being a member of the Danish Royal family! She liked being a doting aunt but wasn't interested in motherhood either!

@Curryong-Thank goodness that you are well bitten by the history bug!!! Your detective works seems to have found what appears to be our neighbor's feelings on Prince Knud and his family. How sad that the family's physical appearance was used in such a manner to promote the change in succession. Not surprising that the idea of female succession had been around for awhile but the press needed a scapegoat to promote its change and that was unfortunately Knud and his family.  :(

I have to say that once I left that dishy site that I discovered that I had been influenced by its opinion of the Danish CP couple. While I personally believe that Frederik is not quite as um.."sharp" as his brother, I can see how Joachim has been portrayed as a bit "arrogant." Both men seem to have found good matches with their wives and created happy family life.  Insight from well respected Danish posters at the big site seem to be in agreement about the brothers, their families and the future of the monarchy.  I can see why Danes might want to see a now 50 year old Frederik begin his reign while he's still a younger man especially after his peers in Spain, the NL, Belgium and soon to be in Japan have begun theirs after the living monarch abdicated for various reasons. (IMO other monarchies do seem to avoid the current situation in the UK .) With Prince Henrik's passing perhaps they Danes might be thinking that Daisy might want a bit of retirement. (I have this vision that the NL's Princess Beatrix sends  selfies to her peers  of herself enjoying life while Elizabeth, CG, Margrethe, Harald, Akihito are still slumped over documents or opening another train station.  :P)

The prince, who is 51, underwent what has been described as a successful operation on Friday night after being admitted as an emergency patient to the University Hospital of Toulouse.

The Danish royal court has thanked the public for its well-wishes, following Prince Joachims emergency surgery over the weekend. In a statement released on Tuesday, the palace said that Queen Margrethe's youngest son, 51, is expected to be moved from the intensive care unit soon.

The court said: His Royal Highness Prince Joachim underwent surgery on Saturday night, July 25, 2020 for a blood clot in his brain at the University Hospital of Toulouse, France. After the recent days of hospitalisation and treatment in the intensive care unit, it is now the doctors assessment that Prince Joachim will not have physical or other consequences but as a result of the blood clot.

In his childhood, King Frederik VIII of Denmark was known as "Freddy with the pretty face".
Could "Freddy with the pretty face" also apply to Crown Prince Frederik?

Depends on whether you think CP Frederik is a handsome man or not, I suppose. IMO he?s always had a very pleasant and cheery look, and appears quite young for his age in spite of greying hair. He is a dapper man, good personal grooming and style does help.

His brother Joachim was always a bit bonier, resembling his maternal grandfather King Frederik I think. He appeared to be a bit grim sometimes, leading to unfortunate remarks on a couple of royal forums about resemblances to an undertaker! Anyway, both brothers are loved by their wives and children so it doesn?t really matter what others think!

Queen Margrethe cancels annual Christmas journey to London ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/queen-margrethe-cancels-annual-christmas-journey-to-london-169389/)  :(

I believe that Margrethe used to use this time to visit with the BRF and other friends. Margrethe and her sisters attended boarding school in the UK during their early years. According to the article, QMI would also buy a traditional English Christmas cake as her mother Queen Ingrid introduced the custom to her family.

QuoteQueen Margrethe has a long held tradition of going to London each December and managing both official tasks and Christmas gift shopping for the family. However, her 2021 visit has now been cancelled.

It was expected that the Queen of Denmark would travel to the UK capital while Crown Prince Frederik would have been regent of Denmark in the coming days. Now the trip has been cancelled, the royal house?s communication department confirms to Danish media.

The Danish Royal Court further confirmed that this has happened because of the current COVID-19 situation.

Queen Margrethe should have had attended two prestigious events in London over the weekend. On Friday, December 3, in the evening, Her Majesty was scheduled to attend an officers ?dinner at The Princess of Wales? Royal Regiment, where she is Colonel-in-Chief.

Prince Nikolai of Denmark moves back to Copenhagen from Paris ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/prince-nikolai-of-denmark-moves-back-to-copenhagen-from-paris-171682/)

After studying for a semester in Paris, Prince Nikolai is now on his way home to Denmark. Prince Felix is set to follow his older brother Prince Nicolai into the modeling world.

Prince Felix of Denmark follows in his big brother?s footsteps ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/prince-felix-of-denmark-follows-in-his-big-brothers-footsteps-172557/)

QuotePrince Felix has taken a second step in a path already walked by his older brother Prince Nikolai ? he will appear in a modelling campaign.

Just like his older brother, Prince Felix had sought and gained admission to the Royal Danish Military Academy in 2021, where he was supposed to undergo a two-year program to become an Army Lieutenant.

However, after beginning his training in August, he decided to interrupt his studies in October, which mirrored Prince Nikolai?s back in 2018.

And now, the two brothers have both started a career in the modelling industry. Prince Nikolai made his debut in a Burberry?s fashion show during London Fashion Week, while Prince Felix will make his first appearance as a model in the campaign for jeweller Georg Jensen?s Reflect collection.

Felix is set to appear in both pictures and an advert promoting the new line, and some images and snippets of the video have already been posted by the jewellery house?s social media accounts. The new campaign launched on 10 February and features necklaces, earrings and rings.

I think it?s so lovely to see these sisters, close to each other all their lives, still meeting and bringing along their families. Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and their younger children will move to the United States in the Summer of 2023. He's taken a new role with a defense firm.

Prince Joachim to move with family to US and start new job ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/prince-joachim-to-move-with-family-to-us-and-start-new-job-184083/)

Quote

In recent weeks, there has been uncertainty about the future of Prince Joachim and his family. It became clear this autumn that the son of the Danish queen was going to leave his job in Paris, but where the journey was to continue first became known as November came to an end. The prince will move to the United States, with Princess Marie and their two childrne, where he will work in the defence industry.

The prince has scored a new top job within the defence industry in Washington, D.C. and thus will leave Paris in the summer of 2023. It was the Danish newspaper ?BT? that first reported this, after having the news confirmed by several independent sources. However, the Danish Royal Court`s communications department will not confirm the information about the prince?s new job.

It can be considered a step up the career ladder for the prince, who has been defence attach? in Paris since September 2020. Although France and Denmark have close cooperation, the USA is, as is well known, Denmark?s most important ally when it comes to defence.

The job in the USA is probably also limited in time and after that, no one knows what the future holds for the prince and his family. Exact details of the job haven?t yet been revealed while reports suggest the family could move to Washington D.C., Maryland or Virginia.

The job naturally also means that Prince Joachim is moving even further away from Denmark after a tumultuous autumn in the Royal family. A crisis broke out, when the Queen decided to take away the titles from all of Prince Joachim?s children. This led to the prince, Princess Marie and Joachim?s former wife, Countess Alexandra, saying that their children felt abandoned by the royal family.

In 2019, Prince Joachim began France?s highest-ranked military education at the Center des Hautes ?tudes Militaires and the Institut des Hautes ?tudes de la D?fense Nationale in Paris. In 2020, he received his diploma, and the prince is also a colonel of the reserve forces in Denmark.

Weren?t there rumours a while ago that Joachim would be trying for a defence job after the years in Paris? I?m sure I read something about it but somehow I believed the family would be based in Europe. That?s a big lifestyle change, not least for the children?s education. From the Danish system to the French and now to the American. I?m sure they will be excited about some aspects of American life however. Good luck to them. Won?t be returning to Denmark any time soon.

It depends, doesn?t it? I suppose their mother will be alone in Denmark (unless she?s found herself a boyfriend recently, haven?t read that she has), and while young men aren?t usually tied to their mother?s apron strings (hopefully) I can?t see them leaving her in Denmark for months at a time either.

It?s difficult to know as well, just what they will be doing in the future. Modelling is lovely while you?re young but surely neither Felix nor Nikolai are envisioning it as a lifetime career. If one or both could enter University in the US (if they could find a degree that appeals to them) that could be a solution. They could then live near Joachim and family and spend holiday times in Denmark or elsewhere with their mother. Otherwise, I guess they could find an occupation in Europe that would give them something to strive for.

Quotehis spring I had the great pleasure of having Prince Nikolai out sailing. He was on board for a day and a half, so I had plenty of time to form a proper impression of an incredibly nice and sympathetic man.
Like the rest of Denmark, I knew who Prince Nikolai was all his life. I have seen him in the papers and on the balcony with the rest of the royal family. But I never ?met? him. Neither in the literal sense nor in the transmitted meaning. When you meet a new person for the first time and you have to get in on each other, the conversation goes far and wide. Ours did too, and those conversations have come out of a TV show. It's called "My own course" and can be seen tonight at. 21.55 on TV2 free or on TV2 Play. The program with Prince Nikolai is recorded before he was told that he would lose his prince title at the end of the year.
The episode with Prince Nikolai is the first in a series of programs where I've invited different exciting people on a trip to sea. The remaining programs will be shown in the spring

I think Queen Daisy might well be celebrating Xmas with her sister Brigette this year. The crown Prince family are enjoying an Aussie Christmas and it?s extremely doubtful that after the rift caused by the pulling of Joachim?s children?s Princely titles that he and Marie or their children will be back in Denmark to share the Season?s Greetings with the mother/grandmother he and his ex wife both criticised a few weeks back.

Yes I believe QMI and Princess Benedikte are likely to be together this year. The CP family hadn't been to Australia for 5 years, though apparently Mary and Frederik did make a private trip in March 2021 without their children. COVID obviously disrupted plans for the Donaldsons and the CP couple.

I am a a bit disappointed though in the large number of photos being taken of the family as they're out enjoying the local spots-shopping, beach days etc..I've seen far more of CP Mary's toned legs than I need to in the tabloids. IMHO it's a shame that the the paparazzi are not giving them a break, but this may be due to the fact that the family are out in the general public.

Countess Alexandra (ex-wife of Prince Joachim and mother to their sons) has resigned from her job.

Countess Alexandra makes a big decision about her future ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/countess-alexandra-makes-a-big-decision-about-her-future-185998/)

QuoteCountess Alexandra has resigned from her permanent job at the electronics company Bang & Olufsen. Countess Alexandra is the former wife of Prince Joachim of Denmark, and is mother to his two eldest children. Bang & Olufsen designs, develops and markets, among other things, speakers, sound systems, headsets and televisions for both private and business customers.

In a comment to the Danish media, Countess Alexandra said: ?I have been happy with my time at Bang & Olufsen. The company has really moved a lot in that period, and we have spread awareness of the Bang & Olufsen brand and products to even more consumers.?

Countess Alexandra had been employed by Bang & Olufsen since the spring of 2020, where she was given a part-time position as head of customer programs. Shortly after her employment at Bang & Olufsen, she officially renounced her appanage in order to be free to do as she pelased. Since then, she has worked with the identification of new customer groups and the development of new customer programs across marketing and sales.

The Countess already left her job on 11 January, but it has only now been announced to the company?s employees. According to her press adviser, the reason for the resignation is that Countess Alexandra would like to have more time for other projects. The 58-year-old will continue to serve as an external advisor in the company.

Prince Christian's main priority in the coming year will be the completion of his upper secondary education. The Royal Palace will provide information on Prince Christian's education courses when the time is right.

It has been agreed with the Prime Minister's Office that finial support from Folketing (Parliament) will only be sought when the Prince turns 21 or upon a possible change of throne, if it takes place before that.

Only after this is the expectation that Prince Christian will participate in official duties to a greater extent.

However, it depends on where the Prince is at this point in his education. Until then, just like today, Prince Christian will only participate in official duties to a limited extent.

Interesting that it's been announced that he'll be eligible to receive an appanage at such an early age (18) especially when you consider that he's not the Crown Prince. Maybe Christian wants to travel or pursue an expensive hobby? Have the Danes ever had an adult heir to an heir in direct line in modern times? What I mean is, they are in quite a different position to the Dutch royals with their history of abdications which brings everyone in line up one notch when still quite young. And the Swedes live for ever. It?s possible that King CG  will still be around when Estelle is 18 and she will need one too. Different horses for different courses, I suppose.

@Curryong-From what I have read at the beginning of the 20th century,  there was four generation succession much like we saw in the UK around the same time and more recently with the late QEII and her successors. (And we know that they were all going to be named either Frederik or Christian!)

During WWII and the occupation there was King Christian (QM's grandfather), CP Frederik (QM's father) and a very young Princess Margrethe, but she wasn't the same age as her grandson is now.

Thanks TLLK. I am interested in the Danes as a RF. Bit foggy about dates however. The fourth generation at the turn of the 20th century, Frederik and Knud  though, were only very small children and didn?t need an apanage. I wonder whether their father Christian got one? Still, as he and Alexandrine received several palaces as wedding gifts when they married, at least they couldn?t complain about their accommodation!

Queen Margrethe?s eldest grandchild to exchange Denmark for Australia ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/denmark/queen-margrethes-eldest-grandchild-to-exchange-denmark-for-australia-191729/)

QuoteAnother member of the Danish royal family is moving far away from home. Queen Margreth?s eldest grandchild, Count Nikolai, has revealed he plans to live in Australia.

Prince Joachim?s eldest son currently studies at Copenhagen Business School together with his girlfriend, Benedikte Thoustrup. Now the couple have said that they are going to study abroad and are planning to move to Australia.

This was recently confirmed by Prince Joachim?s press advisor to Danish media.

For one semester, from August 1 to November 30, the couple will be students at the University of Technology in the Australian metropolis of Sydney. It is not yet known where Count Nikolai and his girlfriend will live, but Prince Joachim?s press advisor said that the couple are currently looking for an apartment.

As Nikolai is now a Count not a Prince I guess he and his girlfriend will be able to explore a freer sort of existence. There?s likely to be a little bit of interest from the Aussie media at first, nephew of Cr Prss Mary and all that and then it will die down I expect, unless he does some modelling as a sideline. They will probably enjoy life in Sydney, it?s a young person?s city, plenty to do. Good luck however in finding any kind of decent accommodation at a reasonable price!

@Curryong - Yes I was wondering what the rental costs would be for a cosmopolitan city like Sydney. I too expect that there will be some media interest in Australia and Denmark as Nikolai and Benedikte begin their new lives there.

I don?t know whether the couple intend to lease or rent, (they surely wouldn?t be buying unless they have a million or so lying around or want a hefty mortgage) but below are some average weekly prices. It depends on the location of course, but I don?t expect a young couple to settle down in the far off suburbs. Central Sydney is where it?s at, and the beachside suburbs like Bondi and Manly. And they cost!

It?s still winter here in Aus but Nikolai looks as if he is really fitting in and ready to enjoy himself as well as to study hard. As I posted before, Sydney is really a young person?s city, plenty to do, to go to, to see, especially in the summer months. I wonder where he and his girlfriend are living? Maybe they got a good deal with their accommodation, an apartment somewhere central.

Count Nikolai and girlfriend will be living in Darlinghurst in trendy eastern central Sydney for the foreseeable future, apparently. Not typical student accommodation that?s for sure! Lots and lots of little bars, nightclubs, restaurants. There will be no need to cook at home! Oxford St, which is Australia?s gay epicentre runs straight through it. Lots of gay nightclubs, bars, businesses etc. it?s where Sydney?s Mardi Gras happens each year. So it looks as if somebody in the family has handed over a tidy sum as lease on an apartment!

It?s a great honour and responsibility to be a god-parent and I?m sure that Prince Christian will live up to it! This couple have had a very long road to hoe on their way to marriage and children. I?ve often thought when reading about them over the years what a stiff-necked hoary old snob Prince Gustav?s grandfather must have been. In a way it?s a great shame that it took so long that Carina?s child-bearing years were over. Still, they now have a gorgeous baby boy so all?s well that ends well.

Yes it is a great honor for Christian. Like you I am so glad that Gustav and Carina were finally able to marry and have a family. They waited so long while their own peers were married nearly 20 years ago.

Various facts have come to the fore in the last 24 hours that seem to point one way, but who knows. The only thing that makes me believe there may be something in it is that Fred does have form in this area. I remember years ago a certain Danish forum (still in operation) talked about him playing around with blondes in nightclubs at around the town the twins were due to be christened. And there were photos showing him on Sydney Harbour on a boat getting VERY close and cuddly with a young woman who certainly was not Mary.

Like @Curryong I am familiar with the Danish forum and Crown Prince Frederik's rumored private life that doesn't involve his wife Crown Princess Mary. And that includes information that Frederik had a girlfriend when he met Mary Donaldson at the Slip Inn in 2000. That along with the incident that occurred the night before the twins were christened does make me tend to believe that there might be some truth there.   :(

That must have made for some very awkward moments during the recent State Visit.

A very scandalous situation.  The price of being a public figure.

IF he had wanted his life to be the opposite of scandal, it's very easy to behave.  How can a famous public figure be so dense to sleepover at the opposite sex home, have paparazzi stationed and following  24/7 with all the details.

Ultimately I feel for his children.

Personally I don't think Fred gives a hoot, yet it will be the children thoughout their lives that will have reporters asking them questions for a very long time.  I also am aware of the  times I wondered about his faithfulness to his marriage, many times he seems like a spoiled brat of which there are a number of royals who think they can just do whatever they please.

When this incident happened a couple of weeks ago, Lady C said the marriage is solid, that Genoveva is a friend, that aristocrats don't flinch with this (gossip) and it's normal. Okay - agreed. I have friends of the opposite sex, but still

But he is not only an aristocrat, he's a public figure, heir to the throne.

constitutional monarchy
Denmark has a constitutional monarchy, which means that the monarch cannot independently perform political acts. Although the monarch signs all Acts of Parliament, these only come into force when they have been countersigned by a Cabinet Minister.
