The annual Prinsesdag  (Princes' Day) ceremony took place today with TM the King and Queen, the Princess of Orange, TRH Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentian.  The King read the speech from the throne. The opening of Parliament in the Netherlands is similar to the one in the UK though the dress code is less formal.

It appears that a number of protestors who were dissatisfied with the government's policies on nitrogen were in attendance yesterday.

Princess Amalia?s first Opening of Parliament overshadowed by protesters ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/princess-amalias-first-opening-of-parliament-overshadowed-by-protesters-181557/)

QuotePrincess Amalia joined her parents in the traditional carriage ride in the Glass Coach, but the streets were lined with both fans and protesters. Farmers, holding the Dutch flag upside down, booed as the carriage procession made its way to the Royal Theatre. Shouts of ?traitors!? could also be heard from the crowd. The farmers have been protesting the government?s nitrogen plans for months. The royal family seemed unfazed and continued waving at the crowd. However, Princess Beatrix, who watched the procession from the building of the Council of State, could barely see over the protesters.

Video of the DRF's arrival. The Princess of Orange's gown was my favorite yesterday followed by her aunt Princess Laurentian's.  I am not a fan of Queen Maxima's dress yesterday.

Good thing that she changed into a more appropriate first day outfit with the hat and the jewelry. I can understand why she's walking carefully up on the Acropolis. It can be rather slippery up there if you step on the marble.

I love doing walking tours of sites like that. My feet hurt just watching her. Some royal women need to put sensible before fashion at times.

The king went to a shelter for Ukrainian refugee kids. Maxima went to one that helps unaccompanied female youth refugees specifically. The Dutch government is involved in the operating of both.

Yes 2010 seems late for an advanced country. Having a sick child is hard enough, cant imagine having to go out of country for treatment.

There is something wrong with a king pedaling a bike in a suit and tie as there is a queen behind him doing the same in *heels* no less.......please give me a break here, get out the jeans and sneakers and sweaters and peddle away and leave the diamonds at home Max.  Being somewhat of a history buff  myself, I would be crawling over ruins in steel top boots or sneakers with jeans and a sweater, leaving the glamour at home for another time.  Who advises them on what the event is should also be helpful with the type of clothing when it calls for something different than normal.

In fairness they arent tourists. They also had four events crammed into one day. Jeans and sneakers were not appropriate for two

Maxima did the best by choosing a cute pair of pants comfortable to ride in but works for other events. The heals I'd have swapped but hey Kate wears heels to play field hockey. It seems royals have it down.

Well the Dutch Royals are the best known examples of the "bicycling monarchies" which was a reputation more or less established after WWII with the late Queen (Princess) Juliana who was known as the "nation's social worker." She loved her grand jewelry but was also known to be very down to earth. She established a tradition of making private visits to schools, hospitals, care homes etc... because when she went on her formal engagements she more of less said that she didn't see the real work being done but rather a showcase.

Honestly this isn't the first time that Maxima's done a bicycling in heels engagement on a busy day. She and the other younger ladies in the DRF roller blade, jump, dance and more during the annual King's Day when they're all dressed up with dresses and heels. As @TudorQueen pointed out "It seems the royals have it down."

Here's an article from 2013 from around the time when KW-A was invested that explains the "bicycling monarchy" term.

Opinion: Dutch monarchs' lessons for world's royals | CNN (https://www.cnn.com/2013/04/30/opinion/dutch-monarchy-lessons)

QuoteThe soubriquet ?bicycling monarchy? is largely an invention of the press. In reality it is a style pioneered by Queen Juliana and continued by Queen Beatrix of being less formal and more approachable and this is extremely popular domestically.

Queen M?xima talks about financial health in new interview ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/queen-maxima-talks-about-financial-health-in-new-interview-185856/)

QuoteQueen M?xima sat down for an interview with CNBC while at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week to talk about financial inclusion.

The Queen of the Netherlands attends the World Economic Forum annually in her role as the UN Secretary-General?s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, and was asked by reporter Tania Bryer about the progress financial inclusion has made since the 2022 Forum.

?We?ve had amazing progress,? Queen M?xima said, relaying that the world data indicates that 76% of the world?s population has access to financial services. In 2011, that number was at 50%.

?Financial inclusion is a means to an end, not an end in itself, so it is about actually having financial health? It basically means being able to deal with your funds on a day-to-day basis,? the Queen said, adding that resiliency, being able to create long-term goals, and not having financial stress are also important tenants to financial health.

Her Majesty said she was optimistic about the collaborations and discussions she?d seen at Davos this year between private and public sector organisations?and private sectors organisations with each other?in regards to financial inclusion.

Queen M?xima said that people need greater access to digital identification so that they can create digital profiles; and that the pandemic has shown that a lot of money had to be moved by mobile means.

A rare in person royal engagement for Princess Laurentien who is married to Prince Constantijn and the sister-in-law to King W-A. Her focus is on literacy.
If I had to give an example of a successful  designation of "royal with career who still participates in national events and has patronages" I'd look to The Netherlands. While it's not "half in/half out" as the pair do not receive state funding, they are part of the Royal House and are official representatives of the monarchy while having careers too.

This is the first time she's taken part in an official overseas visit to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.

The DRF visit to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom continues to its final destination. Former KLM pilot King W-A aka Capt. Van Amsberg piloted the plane to the island of Sint Maarten.

Dutch royal visit lands in Sint Maarten ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/dutch-royal-visit-lands-in-sint-maarten-186284/)

QuoteThe Dutch Royal Family is continuing on their tour of the Dutch Caribbean and landed in Sint Maarten on Monday, 6 February.

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands briefly switched royals to his ?other? job and co-piloted the plane that flew the Dutch royals to Sint Maarten for the final leg of their Caribbean tour. The King shared in 2017 that he had been flying as a pilot for the Dutch airline KLM for over two decades.

Accompanied by his wife, Queen M?xima, and his daughter, Princess Catharina-Amalia, Willem-Alexander had a busy day in Sint Maarten.

Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The country covers less than half of the island of Saint Marten, with the top half a French entity.

The family continued with their aero-theme for the day as they visited the Princess Juliana International Airport to view how reconstruction work is progressing after a hurricane largely damaged the airport in 2017.

The Dutch Royal Family : W-A, Maxima, Amalia, Ariane, Constantijn and Laurentian as well as all four cousins and their wives were in Rotterdam for the celebrations. Alexia is still at school in Wales. As usual it's loud, colorful and very active with the family participating in may activities.

https://www.rexfeatures.com/livefeed/2023/07/01/dutch_slavery_commemoration,_amsterdam?

QuoteAMSTERDAM ? Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologized Saturday for his country?s role in slavery and asked for forgiveness in a historic speech greeted by cheers and whoops at an event to commemorate the anniversary of the abolition of slavery.

The king?s speech followed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte?s apology late last year for the country?s role in the slave trade and slavery. It is part of a wider reckoning with colonial histories in the West that have been spurred in recent years by the Black Lives Matter movement.

In an emotional speech, Willem-Alexander referred back to that apology as he told a crowd of invited guests and onlookers: ?Today I stand before you. Today, as your King and as a member of the government, I make this apology myself. And I feel the weight of the words in my heart and my soul.

King Willem-Alexander interrupts vacation as government falls ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/king-willem-alexander-interrupts-vacation-as-government-falls-191339/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has been forced to interrupt his vacation as the Dutch government has fallen.

The coalition parties were in disagreement over asylum policies, according to the now-former Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Mark Rutte?s VVD Party wanted to limit the flow of asylum seekers, while his junior coalition partners were opposed to his plan. The four parties were unable to come to an agreement during crisis talks held on Friday.

Mr Rutte told reporters, ?All parties went to great lengths to find a solution, but the differences on migration are unfortunately impossible to bridge.? He is meeting with King Willem-Alexander to discuss forming a caretaker administration until new elections can be held.

He had informed the King in writing last night and offered the resignation of his cabinet. King Willem-Alexander arrived back in the Netherlands earlier today and welcomed Mark Rutte to Huis ten Bosch palace around 1 P.M. It is the second time during the King?s reign that a government has fallen. This was Mark Rutte?s third government, which fell in January 2021.

It was not announced where the King was returning from, but the absence of the royal standard on the roof of the palace indicated that the King was not on Dutch territory.

Yes I read that. I approve, actually. I don?t understand the need for ex PMs who have had their term(s) of Office wanting to hang around Parliament afterwards. Several of our ex PMs lounged around on the back benches after they'd been thrown out by the Party Room or the electorate, but most left in a timely manner. Wearing trousers to such an event does seem a bit odd. Maybe she had hurt her leg, had bruises or something. Admittedly Maxi is a very idiosyncratic dresser at times, so perhaps she just thought she would try it out. It will probably be back to a long dress next year.

Yes, and Mabel too has been known for everything but the kitchen sink dressing. But what Maxi is wearing wouldn?t be suitable for any event I can think of. An evening reception for ambassadors and wives, a State visit somewhere, a festival? And a scalloped long coat, over-jacket of many odd and non coordinating colours in some sort of blotchy and weird pattern, combined with unusual accessories like her headgear. It reminded me a bit of the long jazzy coats and pants of the 1970s. I wonder which dressmaker was responsible.

King Willem-Alexander pays tribute to victims of shooting in Rotterdam ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/king-willem-alexander-pays-tribute-to-victims-of-shooting-in-rotterdam-193632/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander has travelled to Rotterdam to pay homage to the victims of a shooting that happened last weekend.

On 2nd October, His Majesty arrived in the city to remember the three people that fell victim to a gunman.

Upon his arrival, the King was welcomed by members of the local community, who were reunited in a community centre opposite two of the victims? house ? the space has been opened to the public to function as a grief and counselling hotspot.

The two victims were mother and daughter; their husband/father was among the ones that welcomed His Majesty, and he later told the press: ?that the king took time for this was great?.

King Willem-Alexander then moved on to the second shooting location, the Erasmus Medical Centre. One of the country?s biggest teaching hospital, the same gunman went in shortly after the shooting at the house and opened fire in the halls, killing a lecturer in the process.

The King was seen talking to hospital staff, including doctors, nurses and students, before getting out of the centre and speaking to police officers and emergency first responders that were on call on the day of the shottings.

Many people said the conversations were warm and emotional: ?That made it very nice, because family members also heard what they went through. They were able to come together this way for the first time, which was extremely valuable. They described the conversation as pleasant, warm and involved. Everyone was very emotional?.

Throughout the entire journey, King Willem-Alexander was accompanied by the Mayor of Rotterdam, who has been involved with the aftermath of this tragedy since the first few moments of it unfolding.

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander believes that "we must face the past, even the less beautiful parts". He said this on Thursday afternoon in response to the news about his grandfather Prince Bernhard. Bernhard's NSDAP membership card surfaced on Wednesday.

"I can well imagine that the news has a major impact and evokes many emotions, especially among the Jewish community," the king said before the presentation of the Royal Prize for Painting in the Royal Palace on Dam Square. "But I am convinced that we have to face the past, even the less beautiful parts of the past."

That is why Willem-Alexander has decided to release the Royal House Archives until September 6, 1948, the Royal House previously announced. From January, researchers can consult letters, documents and other sources from these archives dating back to 1948.

"I also have the option to remove things from the archive, but I have decided not to do that," the king said. "I believe that the entire archive should be available as transparently as possible, for the purposes of historiography."

Flip Maarschalkerweerd reveals in his book De stragglers that he has found Prince Bernhard's original NSDAP membership card. Maarschalkerweerd, former director of the Royal House Archives, came across the map in the private archives that he inventoried after the prince's death in 2004.

Historians have long suspected that Prince Bernhard was a member of the German Nazi party. He himself denied this until his death, even though evidence to the contrary appeared several times in the past. The discovery of his membership card seems to put an end to all uncertainty.

The Government Information Service (RVD) initially did not want to respond to the revelations about Bernhard. On Wednesday evening , the RVD confirmed the existence of the prince's NSDAP membership card.

The Center for Information and Documentation Israel (CIDI), an important voice of the Jewish community in the Netherlands, wants the government to investigate the prince's past. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he did not believe an investigation was necessary.

I think the King is quite right to feel this way and to do this. Everybody in lifelong public service of whatever sort should be able to be scrutinised by historians, even after death, for their actions throughout their adult life.

How I wish, I really wish, that successive monarchs and the consorts in GB had employed the same approach. We would now be able to peruse Queen Victoria?s uncensored diaries, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra?s private papers and letters, destroyed by orders of King Edward at their deaths, the Queen Mother?s letters to Diana and others, burned by Prss Margaret, for instance.

And future historians would be able to examine Prince Philip?s  correspondence to do with his private life, the late Queen?s letters to her consort and adult children about private matters as well. Instead we are left with huge gaps, as I am convinced their correspondence has already gone.

I agree that this was the right approach to take regarding the late Prince Bernhard's personal belongings and his past. Also I believe it was easier to have W-A tackle this during his reign rather than his mother's. To have to confront this information during her own reign would have been more difficult for Beatrix and her sisters IMHO. They were already having to deal with the public acknowledgement of their two half sisters.

I hope that going forward that other royal families consider taking this approach.

This Queen of all of them out there should be ashamed of herself for the way she dresses at time and does not wash her hair, she looks so unkept most of the time and that makes a big impression on her and the country as she represents the people. I am sure she has a dresser and or hairstylist somewhere in one of their palaces..and servanst to take care of everything, so she should have time to wash that head of dirty hair. Not one other woman in her position has ever looked as bad as she does.

Nightowl, the Queen's hair, has been a topic of discussion for many years. I think it's thin from years of dying it blond with straightening, and she wants to wear it as it is. She could use a professional hairdresser, and at times, I think she does, but I also think she likes to do it herself.
