This was the second marriage of the Princess, and as the Church of England doesn't normally allow divorced people to remarry while their former spouses are still alive, the couple chose Scotland as a wedding destination, as the Church of Scotland under certain circumstances allows remarriage of divorcees.

Princess Anne met her husband, as he served as a equerry to the Queen, Anne's mother, after she had divorced her first husband following a three-year separation. From her first marriage to Mark Phillips, Princess Anne had two children: Zara and Peter Phillips. She and Timothy never had children together.
