Congrats to Mary and Frederik! I had a feeling it would be a girl. The Danes wanted a little princess and Mary never disappoints even when it's out of her control it seems.

We have to wait for a long time to hear her name, until the christening - 3 months or so?!
But danish "experts" say that the names could be:

Margrethe - after her paternal grandmother (this name as her first name)
Ingrid - after her paternal great-grandmother
Henrietta - after her late maternal grandmother

It's baby season!!!! Congrats to Fred and Mary for their little baby girl!!!

For names the experts predict, I think I like Ingrid the best. I'd prefer if they chose a different name entirely though.

So there is no law about what she can be named... like the son had to be either Christian or Frederik?

I don't know anything about Christian having to be named either that or Frederik, but I do know that in Denmark there are some laws about naming children. There's basically a big book of names that are considered "real" names which you can use for your child. You couldn't go "I'm going to name my child Apple" (although in Danish) over there...it has to be a real name.

And congratulations to the couple! :) Little girls are adorable!!!

Here we go:

QuoteIt is a Danish tradition that the names of that country's princes' alternate between Christian and Frederik.

the age (http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/darren-kevin-craig/2005/12/06/1133829595920.html)

The government, I think. I'm not really clear on the details. I was only told this by a Danish friend of my family, who had been discussing her sister's struggle to choose baby names, and she mentioned this law. I can probably look it up somewhere if anyone's really interested. I figure it's not that vital, though, so for the time being I'll let it be. :)

I'm not sure what the law is in Denmark but in Germany there is a list somewhere ... we gave our children very traditional German names so it was a non-issue for us but I do know you are not allowed to name the child Moonbeam or Knorr Soup Mix or anything weird like that

Maybe one of the names will be after Mary's late mother, or some Danish variation of that?

Princess Henrietta-Elisabeth

In Iceland you have to apply for a name for your baby to a specific committee. Normally it's just a formality, but they serve the purpose of stopping parents from naming their children really unappropriate names and they also reject names that are too 'foreign' to try to keep the language clean.
I did an essay on it several years ago and saw a list of names that had been rejected. For example, one of the names that were rejected for girls was Satanía.

Is it similar in Germany and Denmark or are there different rules?

Funny story...Mary said that Christian showed "Brotherly type love to the baby" the news thingys here are reporting that a little girl who's parents are family friends went to visit and when they walked out of the hospital the media asked the little girl if Christian was there with his new little sister. The little girl said yes and that when he met the baby he hit her on the head.. :crazylaugh: hence the brotherly type love :lmao:

Little Matilda is lovely

Yes  :lmao:
but that doesn't stop American children from learning it in the first grade -- I can still remember all the verses.

But then again here one of the favorite songs to sing for Parent's Night at school is the "Yellow Rose of Texas" which is about a *** named Emily from my hometown who kept General Santa Anna "occupied" while we attacked his forces. :teehee:

2)Henrietta-Elizabeth (after Mary's late mother and April co-celebrant HM Queen Elizabeth)
3)Myrtle-Maud
4)Halibut

Any other suggestions?

Like I've said before:

Danish "experts" say that the names could be:

Margrethe - after her paternal grandmother (this name as her first name) (Frederik's mother)
Ingrid - after her paternal great-grandmother (Frederik's paternal grandmother who he was very fond of)
Henrietta - after her late maternal grandmother (Mary's Mother)

It has just been announced that the Princess will be christened on Sunday July 1, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. in Fredensborg Palace Church, Fredensborg.

Is it likely that they are gonna choose from those names? Is it just as likely they can name her..I dunno..Lipka or Halibut as Ingrid or Henrietta? Does there have to be some sort of precedence and nod to an ancestor with the baby's first name?
Title: Re: A Princess is born in Denmark!!
Post by: Siempre Vuelva on April 27, 2007, 10:25:54 PM
I'm sure they won't call her Lipka or Halibut...at least not as a first name...I think that they'll use the names Ingrid, Henrietta and Margrethe...and then a fourth name...a very special name! But I think they'll choose a first name that has something regal to it...you know she IS the daughter of the future King & Queen!  But this is only speculation as I don't know more than everyone else...
