A thread dedicated to the late QEII's and the DoE's news that is not part of their official engagements, duties and visits

Queen steps down as patron of children's charities - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-38380285)

Other members of the BRF will take up the patronages that she has resigned from. HM remains that patron of 600 other organizations.

It appears that Charles, Camilla, William, Kate, Harry, Sophie and Anne are picking up about 3 new patronages each. Will update in the respective threads when information becomes available.  :xmas9:

QuoteQueen to step down as Patron of 25 charities

Buckingham Palace has announced that The Queen will step down as patron of 25 organisations at the end of the year.

Her Majesty, who turned 90 this year, is thought to be stepping down as Patron due to her advancing age and the gradual decline in her workload.

Other members of The Royal Family will pick up the patronages, many of whom already serve as Vice-Patron or Presidents, ensuring a smooth transition.

Do you think that the Countess of Wessex will take on the role of patron of the Royal School of Needlework?
Title: Re: General Chat for the late QEII and the late DoE
Post by: Curryong on December 22, 2016, 01:06:30 AM
^ Yes, I think Sophie will be given that. She has visited the Royal School of Needlework and expressed interest in their work. Royals who have a history of a visit or two to a charity in a particular area of interest of theirs generally become vice patron or President and eventually Patron of the organisation involved.

Actually, I think the Queen became patron of the RSN almost by osmosis. Her much loved grandmother, Queen Mary, was a great patron of charities that promoted needlework, tapestry work and so on because she herself embroidered, did tapestry work for chairs in her homes and taught her children the crafts. However the Queen's never, so far as I know, expressed much interest in sewing, knitting etc or adopted such as hobbies. I think she took this over as Patron because it gave the School prestige and would have pleased her grandmother.

Yes because as @Curryong has mentioned she's paid visits to them in the past. There is a pattern of the patronages going to members who have a current role with the organizations or an interest or history with a group. I don't think that it is a mere coincidence that some of these organizations received a visit from the royal who is becoming their patron in recent months.

QuoteQueen steps down as patron of 25 national charities

The Queen will step down from 25 of the 600 national organisations she is patron of at the end of this year, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. The patronages will be passed on to other members of the royal family in the coming months.

It has already been announced that the Duchess of Cambridge will take over the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) Wimbledon, while Prince Harry has been confirmed as the new patron of the RFU, England rugby's governing body. Prince Charles will look after the Holocaust Day Memorial Trust, while Prince William is expected to take over the Welsh Rugby Union.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Her Majesty is currently Patron of more than 600 organisations and has enjoyed a close and active association with a great number of them throughout her reign. Her Majesty will continue to serve as Patron to hundreds of charities and institutions but will now share this work with her family. Many of the organisations listed below already have other Members of the Royal Family as Vice-Patrons or Presidents which will ensure a smooth transition."

Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders seem to have better access to British golden syrup or have a domestic product that is similar.

Yes, it's sold in many places in the Commonwealth, don't know how popular it is though. Golden syrup is miles sweeter than molasses. I can't remember having it much as a child except a spoonful mixed in over porridge in the winter.

I would love to try it but I am missing a few ingredients and right now items like flour are still in short supply where I live. I'm currently "hoarding" our supply of flour, yeast and sugar.

However if someone has the opportunity to try the recipe please let us know how it turns out!

I hope somebody asks how the London Plane trees are doing after they were pruned of diseased branches at BP. So sad when a tree species gets hit with an incurable disease....here in New England we've lost our Elms, our Chestnut Trees, and now our Ash Trees. There was also a discovery of an Asian Horned Beetle which may have been eradicated by drastic means.  Whole neighborhoods in the city of Worcester had trees removed because of it, and it hits about five species. Nasty things!!!

Plane trees are everywhere in London. IMO they're a rather uninteresting sort of tree, but it's always been said that they were the only specimens to survive what was the capital's smoky and sooty atmosphere, which is why they are so ubiquitous there I suppose.

OTOH, Dutch elm trees used to thrive on the Royal estates in England as elsewhere in the country. Then they were hit by an awful disease in the 1960s and 1970s and about 90% of them died or were destroyed. Now they are on their way back, I'm happy to say. Dutch elms are marvellous looking trees I think.

Thanks so much for the information! They have developed a few resistant elm varieties - we  planted two "Liberty Elms" in our downtown and so far they look great. But here the Dutch elm disease allows trees to get about 25 feet tall before it hits them, so we don't yet know if they are truly resistant. It's heartbreaking to see, as they get sick and die in a year. Our Chestnut trees do not get very big before they get sick, but they sucker out from dead stumps and you can see them in the forests. I've seen pictures and drawings of the Chestnut trees - they were huge and spreading trees. Every town in New England has an Elm Street and a Chestnut Street, but the mature shade-giving trees disappeared many decades ago. We have a few Plane trees here, also. I like them with their heart-shaped leaves.

Yes chesnuts are terrific trees. You can stand under them in a storm and not get wet! We have most English trees here in Australia, including limes, Dutch elms (which have escaped the disease) and chestnuts. Sweet chestnuts aren't much eaten here at Xmas (too hot) but I used to really love roasted chestnuts at that time of the year.

Conkers from Horse chestnuts used to be used to play a game called 'Conkers', with them on a string and groups of boys would knock into their friends' conkers with them until they burst! However, I'm sorry to say that the Horse chestnut trees have also been subject to disease over the last few years as well.

Incredible to think that arborists and botanists were already working behind the scenes to try and develop a species of Elm that would be able to survive decades after the Dutch Elm disease blight.

@Curryong- I am impressed that the English trees have done well in Australia considering the difference in the climate.

Most species have, at least here in Melbourne, and in Tasmania, which have cooler climates than say Queensland, up north. Many species came here in the 19th century, because people missed what they had at home. Same with wildlife, our rabbit plague is due to one man missing bunnies and wanting to see them here in Australia. Several escaped! And foxes, imported for fox hunting, which have had a devastating effect on our wildlife population.

It was all part of the 'We're British to our bootstraps' ethos that ruled here, even when I came. It's often forgotten that Aussies held British passports until 1949, nearly fifty years after Federation.

Many more Australian trees, shrubs and flowers have been planted here in the last twenty years or so, partially because we have had some terrible droughts and they, of course, adapt to this very well.

Royal gardens begin to open to visitors again ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/features/royal-gardens-begin-to-open-to-visitors-again-144307/)

QuoteThe grounds of some of Britain?s most famous royal residences are to welcome visitors once more after closing because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, ongoing restrictions mean that booking will be mandatory for anyone hoping to make a trip.

Sandringham?s formal gardens will be open this weekend, on June 13th and 14th but visitors have to secure a slot in advance by heading to the website. The same procedure will be used by Historic Royal Palaces which has just announced it is opening up the grounds of two of its famous homes from Monday June 15th 2020.

The gardens at Hampton Court Palace and Hillsborough Castle in County Down will once more be accessible to visitors. However, booking is essential and can be made on the HRP website. The other facilities looked after by the organisation, including the Tower of London, remain shut for the time being.

Visitors to all these royal residences are being told in advance that things will look different when they arrive because of ongoing restrictions. Cafes and restaurants remain closed although Sandringham will reopen its gift shop from June 15th 2020.

Meanwhile, other visitor attractions with royal links are also ready to welcome back visitors. English Heritage has announced that six of the sites it had to close because of the coronavirus restrictions will open again on June 13th although people will need to book in advance and stick to their time slots. Again, only the outside spaces will be accessible.

Boy, 7, sends Queen handmade word search in case she's lonely during lockdown - Mirror Online (https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/boy-7-sends-queen-handmade-22333349?podsave)

QuoteA schoolboy has sent the Queen a word search in case she is feeling "sad or lonely" during lockdown.

Seven-year-old Timothy Madders created his "happiness word search" with hidden words including "smile", "family", "holiday" and "sunshine".

He and his family had been making word searches during lockdown when he decided to create one for Her Majesty and post it at the beginning of May.

The youngster, from Billericay in Essex, wrote to the Queen in his neatest handwritting.

He wrote: "Dear Queen Elizabeth, You might be feeling sad or lonely during lockdown, so I thought I could make a word search for you to cheer you up.

"Love from Timothy Madders."

I don't think so really. Philip has/had a very inquiring mind and a huge library of books on all sorts of subjects. He had wide ranging interest on all kinds of esoteric issues; ancient civilisations, world religions, spiritualism etc. it's possible that he also read about inter planetary travel as well.

Yes, but since he's married to the monarch, presumably he might have been able to discuss his interest with the brightest minds on that matter, or any matter really. Which must be really nice. And I do agree that he seems like a very intellectually curious man.

Slightly off topic, but i've read that HM liked the tv show the durrells I believe it's called, and also dr. who. I can imagine that that would be something Prince Philip would like to watch. Well at least I think that's the case for Dr. Who anyways.

I can just imagine the Queen and Prince Philip sitting together watching Dr Who! The Queen's had odd taste in TV shows in her time, East Enders and Coronation St among them.

On the subject of extra terrestrials I've been watching with some amazement this week as conspiracy theories shoot around the Internet about the stainless steel object that has just been discovered in the desert in Utah. Now, that might interest Philip, not the fact that aliens were responsible so much as why earthlings would go to so much trouble to dig a deep hole and then rivet a sculpture to solid rock in a desert!

Incidentally Oak, guess what I found when I part of re-read Eade's biography of Prince Philip today.
Had completely forgotten this bit.

Philip was a subscriber in the 1950s to a journal called The Flying Saucer Review! He had got interested in UFO's through Dickie Mounbatten, who was convinced that interplanetary beings regularly visited Earth and might come to invade in a big way in order to sort out conflicts in a post war world (this was in the early Cold War 1950s.)

Philip also corresponded with ufologist Timothy Good, who was a self proclaimed expert on UFOs and alien presences. He wrote to Good 'There are many reasons to believe that they exist. There is so much evidence from reliable witnesses.'

An equerry to Prince Philip, Squadron Leader Peter Horsley, who had been a war hero and believed in the supernatural, (as Philip did) after a near drowning experience, would follow up credible reports of UFO sightings for Philip in the mid 1950s and several witnesses were invited to BP to speak to the two men about their experiences.

Horsley later claimed that he had met an interplanetary being named Janus who praised Philip as a man 'who will prove to be of importance in inter-galactic harmony'. He never mentioned this encounter to Philip however. Horsley ended up in the RAF as Deputy Commander in Chief, Strike Command.

Thank you Curryong, that's indeed very interesting.

I came across this article the other day:

Some people in the comments section are suggesting that we are being 'drip fed' info before a 'revelation' or confirmation, whatever one wants to call it.

It's all very interesting and i'm not sure we're alone in the universe. So no wonder prince Philip has a keen interest in the subject.

That Pentagon report is indeed very interesting, but couldn't the unidentified craft that seemed to come from the ocean into the sky be an experimental craft that the Americans are working on themselves?

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a sceptic regarding UFOs and visitors from other planets; though I certainly don't believe we are alone in the universe Im not convinced we've been visited yet. And perhaps it's just as well! How do we know that a very advanced civilisation so ahead of us in technology would come to Earth with friendly intentions, and not arrive in force instead of one or two craft at a time just snooping around?

On the other hand, I'm interested in the supernatural, believe in ghosts and poltergeist and am a sucker for a good ghost story, so it takes all sorts I guess!

PS The 1950s, when Philip was involved was a high point in interest in aliens and UFOs, especially in the US. For instance in Hollywood there were alien and space movies every five minutes! The big Space programmes by NASA were less than a decade away.

A wise decision IMO to announce that she and the DoE have had their first dose of the COVID 19 vaccine.

The Queen, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, are among around 1.5 million people in the UK to have had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine so far.

Guardian article says
QuoteQueen and Duke of Edinburgh receive vaccination

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have received their Covid-19 vaccinations, joining more than a million people in the UK who have been given the jab.

In an unusual move Buckingham Palace, which rarely comments on the private health matters of the monarch, 94, and her husband, had been given the injection.

It is understood the Queen decided the information should be made public to prevent inaccuracies and further speculation. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said:

A royal source confirmed to PA Media that the injections were administered by a royal household doctor at Windsor Castle.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been spending the lockdown in England at Windsor Castle after deciding to have a quiet Christmas at their Berkshire residence and forgo the traditional family gathering at Sandringham.

Yes, it is indeed. Though I could be cynical and wonder whether in fact both of them were vaccinated much earlier, when the first round was undertaken. I mean, in these things the Royal PR machine is always at full pelt.

It wasn't  for a generation or more for example that the nation first learned that the dying King George V was given a fatal dose of morphine in 1936 in order that the news could be issued to broadsheets rather than later in the day to prevent the BBC and those ghastly penny (tabloid) papers getting it first.

An extreme example, but I do wonder about these things. Like Charles, the Queen and Philip are followers of certain alternative though well established medical techniques, so she probably didn't like being vaccinated very much!

I'd be cynical if they were both in their 80s, but in the UK it has been widely reported the 90 yearolds received it priority along medical staff.

I have no issues with a pair of nonagenarians in decent health getting the vaccine.  I know, here in Ontario, they would be first in line as we are trying to get those most vulnerable vaccinated.  And it is good PR and encouragement for compliance to show people in the spotlight and well respected getting the vaccine.

They were practically the last ones (reported) in their 90's.  This past week the UK has been vaccinating the in their 80 year olds. I'm not sure WHY less than a handfull of reporters were cynical about the Queen and her Prince vaccinating, when both are 90 year olds!

The Queen marks the 69th anniversary of her accession to the throne ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/the-queen-marks-the-69th-anniversary-of-her-accession-to-the-throne-155505/)

QuoteThe Queen is marking the anniversary of the start of her reign. It is now sixty nine years since she took the throne.

Elizabeth II became Monarch sometime in the early hours of February 6th 1952 when her father, King George VI, died in his sleep. She was in Kenya at the time as she and the Duke of Edinburgh prepared for a royal tour. Prince Philip broke the news of her father?s death to her and she returned to London, as Queen, on February 7th 1952.

Elizabeth II, who was 26 at the time of her accession, was crowned on June 2nd 1953 at Westminster Abbey.

The Queen will spend the anniversary privately, as she always does, as for her it is a time to mark the loss of her father, rather than commemorate the beginning of her own reign. She is currently staying at Windsor Castle with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The rule that began 69 years ago has gone on to be a record breaker. On September 9th 2015, the Queen became the longest ruling Monarch in British history, overtaking her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria.

In 2022, Elizabeth II will become the first British Sovereign to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. The UK government has already announced plans to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen?s reign with four days of events planned for June next year.

For a bit of comparison, here are the three monarchs who currently have had longer reigns than QEII: France-Louis XIV, Thailand-Buhmindol, Lichtenstein-Johann II however it is conceivable that QEII might one day be the world's longest reigning monarch in history.

Yes, one year to go before Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. Louis XIV was especially notable for length of reign and lifetime, even if he did succeed his father when he was very young. Not too many people lived into their 70s in the 18th century!

I hope we hear more about the puppies!  A few years ago the Palace announced there would be no additional dogs because,  being elderly, she was afraid she would trip and fall over them.  That is a legitimate concern and the practical step for her to take, but in the end someone saw how much this dog lover just loves having her dogs. Probably just what she needs right now!

The Queen was today seen for the first time since Prince Philip's funeral, as she left her Windsor home behind the wheel of a green Jaguar.

The monarch, 94, was pictured this afternoon driving out of the gates of Windsor Castle, where she had stayed the night after the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral yesterday.

She was seen wearing a floral scarf over her hair, and with her beloved dogs

Somehow I don't see this trip as going to a place to mourn, or a sad trip at all.  She isn't a person to wrap herself in misery; she just acknowledges the situation and goes forward. I hope she is going because she loves it there and wants to relax and recharge after such a horrendous time.  I think she is also one who will really rejoice as the COVID restrictions relax.

I remember the queen saying a few years ago that she wouldn't get new dogs. It seemed such a comfort though for her to get the puppies when Philip was ill and especially after he died. How tragic one has died and soon after her husband.

When I first came to Australia portraits of the Queen were everywhere. In all Govt buildings like Post Offices etc and Council offices and public halls. Haven?t seen any such portraits for a good twenty years anywhere here, yet Elizabeth II is also our HOS. I would guess they?ve quietly disappeared many places in other realms as well as in Britain itself.

I think many were positively surprised that in the outset she seems to be doing well, enjoying the horse races, which is indisputably genuine.  Despite the death, but great life her husband had, I also think good for her.  How many more Ascot's will she be able to attend?! @LouisFerdinand - Here's the link to the official website for the BRF. However as most of us know it's not updated frequently or accurately.  For example the three members who have stepped back from full time royal duties appear to still have their charities/patronages/military appointments fully listed even though I know that they no longer represent some of those organizations ie: Prince Harry is still listed as with the Royal Marines.

You'd have to go to the original announcement and research each organization. Here's the announcement- The Queen's Patronages | The Royal Family (https://www.royal.uk/queens-patronages)

The Royal Family (https://www.royal.uk/) -British monarchy website.

Citing financial reasons, Westminster Abbey has decided to limit the traditional bell ringing to the monarch and heir. From now on only QEII and the PoW will receive the honor.

Off the list are the following members who used to receive the honor:

Duchess Camilla
Prince Wiliam & Duchess Kate
Prince George, Princess Charlotte, & Prince Louis
Prince Andrew
Prince Edward
Princess Anne https://twitter.com/Gertsroyals?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I actually believe that one of reasons that they're removing the other members is due to Andrew.

Thanks TLLK, your absolutely right in that regards, yet even with all the hard work they and others do, it seems to be forgotten so quickly.  Maybe this is about slimming down the monarchy yet not to the point where the people forget what made the country they live in.  We need to keep our heritage in tack so that it does down in history as why somethings are important then and are important today.

Why indeed. It?s been a tradition at WA for some years, and now they?ve ended it due to cost, Covid, Andrew or some other reason. Why would another London Church want to take it on?

Yes, but running a flag up a pole costs nothing. There are costs in time and labour with campanology. And it?s probably true that the WA clerical authorities have lost a lot of money used for upkeep with a lack of tourism, events being cancelled at the Abbey etc over the last two years.

Not here in Australia they aren?t. Only the monarch has a flag day and even that is ?encouraged? by the Federal Govt not mandatory. A lot of Council, Town Hall buildings etc don?t bother. And nobody notices what flags are flying anyway. Not here (except perhaps on Australia Day) not in Britain. People are too busy.

We don?t know that the Church authorities at WA made their decision because of Andrew?s actions and bad reputation. We may suspect that but it?s pure speculation. What is obvious is that WA had been closed for months due to Covid restrictions, that tourist numbers to London have dropped disastrously over the last 18 months or so, but costs remain. This is a very ancient building. Probably many things at the Abbey have been cancelled or cut back because of the pandemic. We just don?t hear about them because they don't affect certain traditions relating to the BRF.

The Queen has had a very successful racing season.

Celebrations at Balmoral for The Queen as she records her most successful racing season in many decades ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/queen/celebrations-at-balmoral-for-the-queen-as-she-records-her-most-successful-racing-season-in-many-decades-165578/)

Quote

The Queen is celebrating at Balmoral this evening after her horse, Fresh Fancy, won his race at Kempton Park, making 2021 Her Majesty?s most successful racing season in many decades.

Fresh Fancy?s success on the all weather on Monday means that The Queen has now recorded her 30th winner of the flat season.

This beats her previous modern seasonal best of 29 wins which was recorded in 2019.

There is then a significant gap back to her 3rd best seasons ? 1992, 2014 & 2016 where she jointly had 23 winners.

2021 is The Queen?s best season since The Racing Post?s record-keeping began back in 1988.

And there are still plenty of more winning opportunities to come, with flat racing in Britain due to continue for another few weeks.

In 2021, The Queen has also enjoyed two winners over jumps, which takes her annual winning total to 32.

19 of her horses have finished in a respectable 2nd place, with another 16 finishing in 3rd.

The 95-year-old monarch has had 32 winners from 133 runs this year, giving her an impressive winning rate of 24%.

In terms of prize money, she has won just over ?460,000 in the past nine months.

I hope she has a relaxing few days now. Perhaps a couple of short walks in the gardens in the fresh air. At 95 it?s only natural that the Queen?s engagements have to be cancelled sometimes.

I wonder whether she was experiencing pain in her legs, so they decided to do a check up. The Queen has been standing and walking more than usual since the lockdown ended, and last week was very busy.

Well, if the Queen doesn?t turn up in Glasgow then it may portend something more serious. Until then just must hope for the best..

The trouble is that the natural desire of individual royals to keep ailments of theirs private and  out of the public arena too often melds with the BP mantra of ?Absolutely everything is fine, nothing to see here, move along please? whenever any senior royal has to go into hospital.

This makes for opaqueness, just bland and cheery statements about ?minor procedures? and  royals ?on top of the world?, so no-one gets the true picture until almost the end.

I emphasise I?m NOT saying at all that this is the case with the Queen, but it does give one pause for thought when the PR for Prince Philip was hyped up in those last weeks of his life. First of all he was just a bit under the weather, followed by news he was just going into hospital for a test or two, then we heard he was being taken home to die in his own bed.

The British public don?t need to know every single detail of treatment, but the other way breeds mistrust the next time. Just  a wee bit more candour about how things really are wouldn?t go astray, IMO.

The very careful wording, such as "preliminary investigation" or whatever it was, and "remains in good spirtis"  is a scary thing to hear, because it says absolutely nothing and we wonder if something really is wrong.

She's been pretty robust all along, but has had a very difficult couple of years. The Oprah interview while Prince Phillip was ill (and, it turns out, very ill indeed) made me wonder at the time how she could cope so well. Perhaps she should have taken more time off but wanted to show a bit of normalcy and just went back too fast.

The Queen has had trouble with her knees for quite a few years now. And I do think that is the cause of this recent health news. All the walking and standing in the last few weeks had caused another flare up. She must find it incredibly frustrating. It?s not too long to Remembrance Sunday either. If the Queen is forced to miss that appearance it will be extremely sad.

What a wonderful story and I can only imagine how excited everyone was to know that the war had ended. While the rebuilding efforts would take decades,  at least they had the joy of knowing it was over.

I?m surprised that people didn?t recognise E, quite frankly. But of course it was a very different era, with radio, Pathe News at the cinema and a deferential press just offering discreet little insights into lives of the royals. I suppose that huge gap between royal family life as it was then believed to be and the lives of ordinary citizens prevented anybody nearby seriously considering that the heir to the throne would be out on the streets with friends, laughing, cheering and calling out with others, maybe a bottle of alcohol in hand!

Hmm, that is interesting, and a bit concerning as Remembrance Sunday and the ceremony at the Cenotaph is reputedly absolutely sacred to the Queen. So much so that it?s always been inferred that she would have to be practically comatose to miss it.

I still don?t think that HM is seriously ill with anything. However I do wonder whether she has some form of arthritis developing in one knee or both, and that?s preventing her from any duties involving walking and/or standing for long periods of time. Interesting too that her advisers keep increasing these periods of rest in two week increments.

So sad that QE has had to pull out of Remembrance Sunday, knowing how important it is to her.  The reports indicate it?s her back not the issue that sidelined her several weeks ago.

Brings up the question of how is the health of the Queen overall.  Is she declining or are these normal aches and pains of a 95 year old that normally quite healthy.

Good question @Macrobug67. I've read theories that HM has had a recurring infection that has laid her up ie UTI and was the reason that she was briefly admitted to the hospital in recent weeks. The strained back is just the latest report that we've received.

I am sorry that she had to miss some of the most important dates on her calendar in particular those related to Remembrance Week.

The Queen is 95. Her back problem might be related to the leg/knee problems she has had for years. Or, who knows, she may have had a fall. None of us know at all what is going on. I have noticed over the past year or more that she has been getting slightly tottery when walking.

I can well believe that muscle strain in a 95 year old could take three months or more to heal. However, considering the first commemorations for the Platinum Jubilee begin in February 2022, let?s hope everything is fine by then. If the back strain persists the Queen may be forced to use a wheelchair for the time being, a nice comfy one!

The private meeting of the majesties  that took place earlier this week at Windsor Castle. QEII met with HM the Custodian of the Crown and Prince Radu. There are long family ties between the British and Romanian royals with the late King Michael and the late DoE being first cousins.

Details on the Romanian couple's visit to the UK can be found in the Romanian Royal Family thread.

Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown was hosted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a private meeting on November 24th 2021.

Margareta?s husband, Prince Radu, was also present.

The meeting came at the beginning of a four day public visit by the couple to the UK.

Quote021 has brought a year of joy, personal heartbreak, and difficult circumstances for many people worldwide, and The Queen is no exception. As the year comes to a close, Royal Central is looking back on Her Majesty?s year and all the highs, lows, and little moments in between.

HM must have found the first third of the year (January-April) to be especially challenging with the loss of long term friends Lord and Lady Vestry,  Phillip's hospitalization/death along with the Sussexes' Oprah Winfrey interview being among the most prominent events during that time. However the birth of little August was definitely a joyous occasion.  :hearts:

A review of 2021 for Queen Elizabeth and the late DoE and a reflection on how it has impacted the Royal House of Windsor.  :happyuk:

A year of sadness, yes, but 2021 was far from another ?annus horribilis? for the Windsors ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/a-year-of-sadness-yes-but-2021-was-far-from-another-annus-horribilis-for-the-windsors-170453/)

QuoteIt?s a well worn phrase, coined by the Monarch herself. As the dust settled on a truly terrible year for the Royal Family in 1992, The Queen described it as an ??annus horribilis??. Thirty years on, it?s been used several times to describe the twelve months the Windsors have just gone through. But while 2021 has been a year of sadness and frustrations, the ruling dynasty is a long way from the disastrous days of three decades ago.

No one would deny that the past twelve months have been anything other than tough for The Queen. The death of her beloved husband, on April 9th 2021, clouds over everything else. Losing Prince Philip is something she is still coming to terms with. Like all those who have loved deeply and been loved in return, The Queen will know that shaping a new life around the hole left by someone so important is a long, hard and lonely process.

She has her family to support her. Her particular praise, not just for Charles and William but for Camilla and Catherine, in her Christmas speech highlighted how big a role this raft of senior royals plays in her public and private domains. The many images of Anne, Sophie and Edward supporting her in her royal work that were included in her much watched broadcast underlined their importance, too.

However, other issues have done enough damage in the past year to lead to some claims that 2021 was an annus horribilis. The Duke of York faces a civil lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre who says he sexually abused her when she was seventeen. Prince Andrew denies that and the case goes before a Manhattan judge again in the early days of 2022.  Meanwhile, the early months of the year just gone were dominated by claims made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Their allegations that an unnamed member of the Royal Family made comments about the colour of the skin of their son, Archie, before his birth caused shockwaves and led to another famous line from The Queen ? recollections may vary.

But despite the problems, the Royal Family leaves 2021 in a much better shape than it was when The Queen called 1992 her ??annus horribilis??. Then, she had seen the marriages of three of her children disintegrate and none of it happened quietly. The year had been filled with day after day of revelations in the papers about the state of royal relationships.

It led to an erosion of support that inevitably opened up the wellworn criticisms around issues that always rise when the Monarchy?s popularity ratings sink. There were fresh questions about the cost of the Monarchy as well as its usefulness.  By the time that fire devastated Windsor as 1992 ended, royal stock was so low it was hard not to see some kind of symbolism in the destruction of this ancient royal residence.

And there was little change on the horizon. No wonder The Queen, usually calm and quietly optimistic, seemed to give way to the briefest flicker of despair. But that is where this year differs so much from the past.

Big problems remain but there is far more to look forward to. Amidst the sadness of 2021 came moments of great joy, missing in 1992. The Queen welcomed four new great grandchildren, all of them much loved. Despite the problems of the year, the Windsors? popularity remains solid. They have had big successes this year, including Prince William?s Earthshot Prize, while the whole family?s support at major global events, including the COP26 and G7 summits, cemented their role in soft diplomacy.

But it is the immediate future that marks this year as so very different. The Queen?s Platinum Jubilee will dominate 2022 and is already one of the big news stories of the coming twelve months. History shows us that jubilees bolster the Monarchy and lead to shared celebrations that only ever benefit the royals, however brief the boost might be. Even 2002, when the Golden Jubilee was written off as a disaster before it even began, turned into a triumph.

And The Queen goes into her Platinum Jubilee year with a huge groundswell of support behind her. After seventy years of service, her role in British life is unquestioned while even her most ardent critic would acknowledge that seven decades of duty have won her widespread and well deserved respect. There is a real sense that what is to come is a celebration of an historic reign that has redefined modern royalty and which exerts an influence that is all but impossible to define.

Which is why 2021, for all its pitfalls, is far from a horror show. Yes, it has been a time of deep sadness. But as it takes its leave, it leaves a Royal Family in a strong position to take a moment of history and turn it into a huge success. In just a few months time, massive crowds will cheer The Queen during her Platinum Jubilee weekend and the story of 2022 may well end with the famous phrase that inspired her own words of 1992. The next year could well  prove to be the annus mirabilis of an already magnificent reign.

The Queen makes ?generous? donation to Ukraine humanitarian appeal ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/the-queen-makes-generous-donation-to-ukraine-humanitarian-appeal-173462/)

QuoteThe Queen has made a ?generous donation? to a Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia continues.

The Disasters Emergency Committee revealed the donation on March 3rd 2022, tweeting: ?Many thanks to Her Majesty The Queen for continuing to support the Disasters Emergency Committee and for making a generous donation to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.?

The DEC is comprised of 15 UK aid charities that come together quickly in times of emergency to launch appeals for humanitarian causes. They say the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal will provide food, water, shelter, healthcare and protection to the families who had to flee their homes with only what they could carry on their person.

The DEC has charity partners in the Ukraine and bordering countries like Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova, to provide key, critical aid as needed.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have also made a private donation, The Telegraph understands.

The Disasters Emergency Committee has launched an urgent appeal to help people fleeing conflict in Ukraine.

The UK Government will match pound-for-pound up to ?20 million donated by the public to this appeal.

The Queen has arrived at Sandringham where she will mark her 96th birthday tomorrow in a typically low-key, unfussy way.
Meanwhile her grandson, Prince Harry, takes a swipe on US television about her inner circle, claims she talks to him about things she can?t tell anyone else?.and says he doesn?t know whether he will be at the jubilee celebrations because of ?security issues and everything  else?. He claims he is trying to ?make it possible that I can get my kids to meet her.?

She admitted she was ?blown away? by the honour, adding: ?I don?t feel like I deserve this. I can?t tell you what this means to my family, it?s so much to take in.?

It comes days after she announced she had ended active care and had been moved to hospice at home care, saying she did not know ?how long I?ve got left?.

The Queen ?danced around in circles? after hearing that Zara had won a medal at the 2012 Olympics ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/queen/the-queen-danced-around-in-circles-after-hearing-that-zara-had-won-a-medal-at-the-2012-olympics-184300/)

QuoteFormer royal protection officer Richard Griffin said that Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, was ?too nervous? to watch the event herself.

Speaking shortly after her death in September, Mr Griffin said that The Queen couldn?t face watching the event live, so went out for a picnic instead.

Mr Griffin said: ?I remember once when I was up at Balmoral with The Queen, and Zara was competing in the Olympic Games, and looked like she was going to win a medal.

?And I thought I would be flying down to Greenwich to watch her get on, but the Queen said to me ?I?m just so nervous, I can?t face up to it. Let?s just go out for a picnic.?

?So we drove up to one of the mountainsides, one of the cabins and we had a little private picnic just the two of us.?

However, the late monarch could not wait any longer, so asked her protection officer to radio his colleagues, asking how her granddaughter had done.

Mr Griffin continued: ??So I radioed them and found out she?s won the silver medal.

?I remember the Queen jut grabbed me and we were dancing around in circles on this hill in Scotland.

A beloved character from British children's literature became an honorary member of the British Royal Family in 2022.

YEAR IN REVIEW: How Paddington became an honourary member of the Royal Family in 2022 ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/queen/how-paddington-became-an-honourary-member-of-the-royal-family-in-2022-184792/)

QuoteThis has been a monumental year for the British Royal Family. It included a once-in-a-lifetime Platinum Jubilee, the death of the United Kingdom?s longest-serving monarch, and the start of a new reign. However, for many keen royal watchers, the biggest event of the year was a new addition to the Royal Family ? Paddington Bear.

Paddington Bear?s relationship with the British Royal Family is not new. In 1986, Paddington at the Palace was published, following the little Peruvian bear?s adventures at Buckingham Palace. In 2022, Paddington became a lot closer to the royals, though.

The Queen?s Platinum Jubilee in the first weekend of June featured several large-scale events centred around Buckingham Palace. That included a Platinum Jubilee Party at the Palace concert on Saturday, 4 June, with 22,000 spectators joining members of the Royal Family on the Mall.

The concert kicked off with a special video, with Queen Elizabeth hosting Paddington Bear at Buckingham Palace for afternoon tea. After Paddington accidentally squishes the cakes, he offers Her Majesty his signature marmalade sandwich, and she confides that she carries one in her Launer handbag, as well.

Not only was the video sweet and touching, but it was also one of the last times that The Queen was seen publicly before her death. The late Queen kept the video a secret from all her family members so that it would also be a surprise for them at the concert.

Upon her death in September, thousands of Paddington Bears were left along with marmalade sandwiches and floral tributes on the grounds of Windsor Castle, Sandringham, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and Buckingham Palace.

The Paddington Bears were collected and cleaned by palace staff. After going on an adventure through Buckingham Palace and Clarence House, Queen Camilla donated the bears to Barnado?s Nursery in November, where children could have a teddy bear picnic.

its quite obvious.  Elizabeth was the queens name, and also the queen mothers..  By and large, the RF has used different names for the members of the family who are known to the public, rather than using the same names.  All the children and grandchildren have used Elizabeth as a secondary name for one of their daughters, so that is how they honour the queen.  Williams daughter, is Charlotte Eliz Diana.  Beatrice's daughter is Siena Elizabeth, Andrew gave Bea the names Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, Zara's daughter is Lena Elizabeth Tindall, Ed's daughter is Louise Elizabeth Alice Mary,  Peter Phillips daughter is Isla Elizabeth, and the cousins usually have an Elizabeth as a second name for one of their children.  Lady Davina Windsor is an Elizabeth, Fred Windsors daughter Maud has Elizabeth in her names, so has Lady Heleln Windsors daughter though Lady H is Helen Marina Lucy....

Thank You Amabel2, that is very very interesting.  I knew some of the cousins had Elizabeth in their names yet not all of them.  So someday if George has a daughter first then she will be named Elizabeth as she will be a Queen after George.....that would be difficult to live up to I would think. Wow, getting into the far away future here, time to stay in the present I think or not.  Now I wonder who named me as Elizabeth is my second name and my first name is just weird......even the gov can't get it right...lol

Oh, okay, I was under the impression that the name Elizabeth was saved for queens only, say *if* a first born was a daughter of George's then would she be given the name of Elizabeth.  I personally like the name as it is an old ancient name for a woman, not modern or contemporary like Apple.

we don't know what George's daughter, assuming he has one, will be called. It might be that they'd like an Elizabeth III, but equally in today's world, people tend to try and give a new name to a child, rather than call him or her after his parents or grandparents.  There are other royal names that a future daughter could have...
There has'nt been a Victoria now for a long time, or they cuold use Anne.

Interesting as the two Queen Regeants named Elizabeth were named after Queen Consorts. Elizabeth I was named for her paternal grandmother- Elizabeth of York married to Henry VII.  Elizabeth II was named after her mother who was the Duchess of York.

I think it was just that Elizabeth was such a common name, it was in medieval times and it still is very common today.  Hence the many abbreviations of the name, Lizzy, Liza, Betty, Bess, Libby etc etc.

Chail, from North Baddesley, near Southampton, also admitted making threats to kill and possessing the loaded weapon in the castle. He is due to be sentenced at the same court on 31 March.

A strange life: Profile of Prince Philip | The Independent | The Independent (https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/a-strange-life-profile-of-prince-philip-1563268.html)

A 1992 long but extremely interesting profile of the life of Prince Philip, starting with his emotionally stunted childhood and adolescence. Really, really good in explaining a lot about Philip as husband, father and royal.

Philip and early years of royal life.

In the early years of the Queen's reign, Philip was the only Royal male in her immediate family, and he said what he pleased. He was often brusque. 'Let's get the hell out of here,' he would say. 'This is a bloody waste of time.' He chafed at the constrained, ambiguous business of being Consort. The problems came to a head soon after the Queen's accession, when Philip left on a four-month tour of the Commonwealth, accompanied by Michael Parker.

'I think Philip just got bored with the whole Royal business,' says one of the Queen's former private secretaries. 'All those stuffy engagements, all that handshaking. It wasn't his thing at all. He just got fed up with it.' At the end of the tour, Parker resigned when his wife sued him for divorce. His departure sparked off a wave of rumours about trouble in the Royal marriage.

Philip and the media

Either way, the rumours have done little to help his relationship with media folk, whom he once compared with the apes of Gibraltar. He cannot overcome his distaste, even when it would suit him. One British reporter, who doesn't want to be named, recalls approaching Prince Philip as he took a walk after a church service at Sandringham one freezing January morning. The Royal yacht Britannia had just been used as a temporary refugee ship during an evacuation of Aden. 'The story showed the Navy in a really good light,' the reporter says. 'I expected him to make some sort of positive comment. Nothing more.' Instead, the reporter says, 'he just turned and snapped, '*** off'.' Then he pressed his electronic buzzer. The police came running.

I ask Prince Philip if he still feels misunderstood. He had been quoted as saying so in Look in 1964. It sets him off again. 'Come off it. You cannot take quotations in newspapers seriously.' Brushing an imaginary speck from his suit, he adds: 'It so happens that it is perfectly legal to put anything in a newspaper in quotation marks, and there is nothing you can do about it. You have no copyright on what other people say you said.

'There's no point in talking about it.'

The whole family has been shocked at the tabloids' lese majeste. And one of the reasons advanced for the Queen's offer to take so many of her relatives off the Civil List is that she hopes they will now be able to insist on more respect for their privacy. If so, it may not come in time for the next media bombshell: the next book by Kitty Kelley, who put the cat among the Reagan White House pigeons, is about the House of Windsor.

Again what has that to do wiht anything?  Philip was 100 years old almost when he died. He was born into a conservative royal family in 1921.  Of course he comes across as racist to younger people.  BUt Harry was born 60 years later and made racist remarks to his army friends, and claimed an award for anti racism, then said that he had not accused his famly of being raicist.  So if he iddn't accuse them of being racist, how can he claim an award for fighting their racism?

Philip wasn?t 100 years old when he shared those racist sentiments on tours with the Queen and on his own. He began these so-called ?amusing? comments about other races when he was in his 40s, if not earlier. He was excused it by the Press for years. And the QM also made several racist remarks in her time. Younger members of the royal family (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren) grew up hearing those views.)

Harry made one racist comment to his Pakistani army friend, apologised for it and was disciplined for it at the time. That?s hardly the same thing as PP. Harry wasn?t given the Ripple of Hope Award for fighting racism in the BRF, I copied what the organisers of the RK Human Rights award said about giving the Ripple of Hope to the Sussexes in a former post. Didn?t you read it? It didn?t mention the RF in that statement in any way.

Here it is again, in case you?ve forgotten it,

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights today announced that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have been named this year's Ripple of Hope Award laureates in recognition of their work on racial justice, mental health, and other social impact initiatives through their Archewell Foundation.

Buildings, parks, pubs or businesses cannot be renamed after the late Queen Elizabeth without specific permission, the Cabinet Office has warned.

The name of the late Queen is going to be "closely protected" in terms of how it can be used, says new guidance.

The Cabinet Office says permission for using the late Queen's name will only be "sparingly granted".

An "official national memorial" to the late Queen is expected, says the Cabinet Office.

There are many places and businesses named after historic royal names - including the Queen Victoria pub in BBC TV's EastEnders soap opera.

But official guidance has recently been issued by the Cabinet Office warning about the limits on using modern royal names and titles.

Queen officially opens new Elizabeth Line
In particular there are concerns about ensuring the late Queen's name is only used in "dignified and appropriate" ways.

"The full title of Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be closely protected to preserve the rarity of the honour," says a government spokeswoman.

Gosh, if those rules had applied in previous centuries at least half the pubs in England wouldn?t be named after various Kings and Queens of England. As for Victoria, people all over GB and the Empire went on the rampage of naming things after her, during her lifetime and after it. Cities, provinces, colonies, States, islands, forests, nature reserves, waterfalls, and literally thousands of streets, avenues, buildings, all over the known world named after her.

I agree. It's only now after her death and a few decades since threats were initially uncovered that the world knows about them.

You would hope so. Prince Philip was a stalwart support to her practically all their married life. The Queen may well have struggled with a less interested spouse. Really, in spite of each man having faults (of course) the UK and Commonwealth has been very lucky in both our most recent Prince consorts.

Yes I do hope that there will be a statue or something for the DoE. Phillip's great-great-grandfather Albert has many memorials dedicated to him, so I believe that it is fitting that he would have one as well. Though probably not something on the scale of the Albert Hall.

I certainly don?t think that anything like the Albert Hall will ever be replicated again (and I realise you?re joking.) Victoria so adored her husband that after his death she was determined to honour him and a huge public Hall was considered admirable. Because she was so venerated in her later years, the majority of M/C Britons backed the project. What the poor thought about it is unknown.

Ive more and more to feeling that statues don?t do much and perhaps some kind of national charitable endeavour in the names of the late Queen and PP would be of more practical use. I don?t know. I think there may possibly be a new important building or new wing dedicated to Elizabeth in London in the next few years, an academy, scientific establishment, research hospital wing, something of that sort.

@Curryong -If you have the time, watch the video that is included in the article. It's more or less the same information from the article, but IMO it's more poignant hearing from the reporters/editors on the events of the day.

In the link below, there's an account of Huw Edwards' preparing himself to deliver the announcement of the Queen's death which he did in a most professional and dignified manner IMHO.

Log into Facebook | Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=590213839552541)

Huw Edwards reveals what it was like to announce Queen Elizabeth II's death.

QuoteHuw Edwards, out of vision, is saying: ?We are expecting the news from Balmoral that she?s having treatment or that indeed they are unable to help Her Majesty any more.?

Then Edwards hears in his earpiece: ?The announcement is here. Take your time. Speak when you are ready. Don?t rush.?

News channels around the world switch to the BBC to see Huw Edwards, now in a black tie, say: ?A few moments ago, Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Palace has just issued this statement: ?The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon?.?

Edwards said later: ?When the announcement came, where I thought that I would be terrified, having imagined it over the years, actually I was very calm.?

The stamp was released to mark the anniversary of the death of Her Late Majesty.

It is extremely rare for the Italian Postal Service to issue a stamp featuring a non-Italian and the Royal Family immediately thanked them, on social media, for the honour.

A REMINDER TO HARRY:

Buckingham Palace statement on The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Published 19 February 2021

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service. The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.

Notes to editors:
Following The Duke and Duchess of Sussex?s decision to step away last year as working members of The Royal Family, a 12-month review was agreed.

A decision has now been made after conversations between The Duke of Sussex and Members of The Royal Family.

The military, Commonwealth and Charitable associations which will revert to The Queen are:

The Royal Marines, RAF Honington, Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving.

The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, The Rugby Football Union, The Rugby Football League, The Royal National Theatre and The Association of Commonwealth Universities.

What Harry really said. Reprinted in a source which is anti-Sussex btw. He stated he ?felt forced? and did not mention his grandmother at all.

https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/celebrity-life/royals/prince-harry-claims-he-and-meghan-markle-felt-forced-to-leave-uk-in-new-court-statement/news-story/9840ae6b1ed052e1dcf7604054387398

The Duke of Sussex submitted a statement on Thursday ? which was read in the High Court on his behalf ? as part of his legal challenge to the Home Office over its decision to downgrade his security protection.

Harry claimed that he and Meghan?s relocation to the United States, widely dubbed as ?Megxit?, came ?with great sadness?.

?It was with great sadness to both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020,? Harry?s statement read.

?The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States.

?That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.

?I can?t put my wife in danger like that, and given my experiences in life I?m reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm?s way too.?
