The Princess Royal hosted a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Thursday where she welcomed veterans and serving servicemen and women to join in the celebrations.

The Queen?s daughter spent the afternoon speaking to the hundreds of guests invited in the grounds of the palace, including 99-year-old Edward Morrison.

Mr Morrison, who travelled down to the palace from Liverpool, served with the Lancashire Fusiliers.

During his military career, Mr Morrison served at conflicts including Dunkirk.

4,500 members of the Expeditionary Force perished during the Battle of Dunkirk. In 1940, Allied forces in France who were fighting against the Germans were surrounded and forced to retire to the beaches of Dunkirk, France. When they were there, they were rescued by a fleet of civilian ships and taken across the Channel to England.

Operation Dynamo, as it was known, resulted in the safe evacuation of over 338,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force.

Speaking of his time at the Buckingham Palace garden party, Mr Morrision said: ?It means a lot to me to be here.?

A 99 year old veteran who survived the disaster of Dunkirk certainly deserves to be honored.

QuotePrincess Anne paid a visit to Tyneside to recognise the work of a charity working to support crime victims.

As Patron of the Restorative Justice Council, Princess Anne visited the charity and spoke to staff about their work and the crucial services they provide to victims.

I think this is an excellent example of Anne and her work with her charities. Very little publicity but beavering away quietly for worthwhile causes that often get overlooked.

TLLK

More about this worthwhile organization that seeks to help crime victims.

https://victimsfirstnorthumbria.org.uk/

Quote
Victims First Northumbria is an independent victim referral service and registered charity.

We put victims of crime at the heart of our service ensuring they are given help and support to cope and recover from the difficult experience they have faced.

We understand the different needs required by people using the service. Some may have suffered deep psychological or emotional trauma; some may be vulnerable or suffer from a particular disability; people from particular ethnic groups may need culturally sympathetic support; people of different ages will have different needs to each other; some cases are more complex than others.

Whoever the victim, and whatever the crime, we will always put them first and give the best possible support, care and advice.

Contact Victims First Northumbria by calling 0800 011 3116 (Monday ? Friday, 8am ? 7pm and Saturday 9am ? 4pm) or contact us here

To find out about your rights and entitlements as a victim of crime you can look at the Victims Code of Practice leaflet published by the Ministry of Justice.

Thanks TLLK. As someone who worked in social services for years (I retired a few years ago from full to part time work,) I always feel that counsellors of the vulnerable and the bereaved deserve a medal. And thank God services like Victims First are around to help. I think many of these organisations arose from the activism of the 1970s. I know they did in Australia. And what a boon they would have been to WWI widows and fiancees for example, if counselling services had existed then. Crime victims in particular are unfortunately sometimes left with a feeling of injustice if perpetrators get unfairly light sentences while they are left struggling, as well.
