Title: Duke and Duchess of Gloucester engagements, news and chat
Post by: snokitty on December 28, 2014, 01:00:45 AM
A thread for the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester's engagements, news and general chat.

Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester | Unofficial Royalty (http://www.unofficialroyalty.com/princess-alice-duchess-of-gloucester/)

QuoteLady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott was born on December 25, 1901 at Montagu House in Whitehall, London, England. She was the third daughter and the fifth of eight children of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch and 9th Duke of Queensberry and Lady Margaret Bridgeman, daughter of George Bridgeman, 4th Earl of Bradford.  Alice's father was the largest landowner in Scotland, and she was a descendant of King Charles II through an illegitimate line.

Alice was a very talented artist. She painted to finance lots of trip to Kenya, which she fell in love with on her first visit. She was a mature bride as she didn't marry until she was in her thirties and somehow I don't think Harry Gloucester was her ideal man! She seemed quite resigned to being married by the time she we'd as she remarked she had had 'a decent run'.

I hadn't known that information about Alice. Do you know if any of her work is exhibited?

No, all I know is that she was regarded as a talented water-colourist. She loved Kenya and painted landscapes of ithe scenery there. Then she would come back to Britain and sell them at a Bond St art gallery to finance her next trip. I read a biography of hers ages ago and it had some paintings of hers in it. She was quite an interesting character, but married to a very bovine man.

She wrote her autobiography, Memoirs of Princess Alice, it can be bought at Amazon.  I read it years ago and was struck with how how nice she was and how adventurous.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester attended a Service of Commemoration at Southwark Cathedral on Sunday afternoon to mark the anniversary of the London Bridge attack.

It has been one year since the attack at London Bridge and Borough Market where eight people died and more than 40 were injured.

Prince Richard and Birgitte attended the commemorations on behalf of The Royal Family and were sat beside the Prime Minister and other dignitaries to remember those killed last year.

During the private ceremony, candles were lit by relatives of the victims, before an olive tree was planted in the cathedral grounds using compost from floral tributes which were left on the bridge by wellwishers in the aftermath of the attacks last year.

Following the conclusion of the ceremony, a procession from Southwark Cathedral to Southwark Needle took place where a minute?s silence was held.

Their Royal Highnesses laid flowers alongside the Home Secretary and community leaders.ote][/quote]

Royal couple leave Kensington Palace home | Royal | News | Express.co.uk (https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1145245/Royal-News-Kensington-Palace-Duke-and-Duchess-Gloucester)

QuoteThe Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have lived in Kensington Palace since their marriage in 1972 and raised all three of their children in the royal residence. Kensington Palace has been a royal residence for over 300 years, it was where Princess Diana lived and it is now the London home to Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and their three children Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1. The Queen's cousin and his wife will still be neighbours to the Cambridges as the Duke and Duchess will only be moving a short distance to the Old Stables, also in Kensington Palace, which will cost ?400,000 to refurbish, according to the sovereign grant annual report.

The necessary work that is required before the couple move in includes the following

QuoteThe report explained: ?The scheme allows for the complete refurbishment of the property including the old and failing mechanical and electrical systems.

"The project commenced in January 2019 and is due for completion in summer 2019."

The Gloucesters are still living in Apartment 1, but will be downsizing to the renovated Old Stables property in the coming year, an insider told Hello! Magazine.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have three grown-up children who have flown the nest so it is natural the couple have decided to move to a smaller home.

It would seem that the time has come for the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to leave Apartment 1 at Kensington Palace. Removals vans were on site today. He moved there with his mother and brother in 1970. The royal couple are relocating to the Old Stables, within the KP compound.

I read that the apartment (at least when the Gloucesters were in residence) consisted of 22 rooms. If the Sussexes move in, and I don't think they will, watch the tabloids go berserk after the Frogmore Cottage conversion costs (even though it was Sovereign Grant money) that they carry on about even now.

Also, the Sussexes were supposed to have refused that apartment as they didn't want to be based in London. And it's miles too large for a simple pied a Terre. So I don't think it will happen.

Perhaps it will all go to the Cambridge's and it may be turned into small apartments for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.  Prince Charles DID something similar at Clarence House for Princes William and Harry.  I understand those 2 small apartments have been redesigned and changed since they moved out.

Interesting article! I didn't know the Duke of  Sussex was QV's favorite uncle! In its history it has been left vacant and was not always immediately filled. Perhaps that is what will happen now, but it would be nice if Beatrice and Edo moved in. Junior royals now pay rent at KP and they would surely be able to afford it.

Some of the items to be auctioned include former possessions of the late Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (His parents, his paternal aunt-Princess Mary and grandmother-Queen Mary)

QuoteThey have now put up for auction more than 200 items from their London home and the family?s Grade I listed country estate, Barnwell Manor in Northamptonshire.

The lots mainly comprise items collected by the Duke, who is the Queen's cousin, and his late parents, Prince Henry and Princess Alice, the former Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Highlights include a George V jewelled enamelled gold Royal presentation snuff-box, by Sebastian Garrard London and made to mark the coronation of Queen Mary and George V in 1911, which is estimated to fetch up to ?50,000 and a silver cigarette-case given to Prince Henry by his brother Prince Albert, who later became King George VI, on his 18th birthday. It is inscribed ?For Harry from Bertie 31.3.18?.

Quote

The collection also contains a number of children?s books including first editions by A.A Milne, including a Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner as well as a doll's house dating to the second half 20th century, which is estimated to fetch up to ?600.

The sale also comprises items from the Duke?s late sister, Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, and her family.

Christies said the auction, titled Property from Descendants of Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary, which takes place on Friday, will ?provide fascinating insights into the private worlds of two of their children and their families.?

It comprises 317 lots overall, with estimates ranging from ?300 to ?100,000, and includes an array of decorative arts from furniture and ceramics to clocks, books and paintings.

From the Gloucesters, a set of 19 George III Mahogany dining chairs, circa 1775, have a price estimate of between ?60,000 and ?100,000.

Quote

A monogrammed 9-carat gold notebook holder and pen which belonged to the late Duke?s mother, Queen Mary, is estimated to fetch up to ?1,800, while a George III mahogany library table, circa 1750, has a price of ?30,000.

The late Duchess, who died in 2004 aged 102, was a keen needlewoman and a highlight of the sale is a set of four 18th century cockpen armchairs, received as a wedding present in 1935, the seats of which she embroidered over many years.

One of the chairs has been signed and dated in the stitching ?Alice 1937?. They are offered as two pairs, each estimated to fetch up to ?8,000.

It's not often a collection with so many close Royal connections comes up for auction. Some of the pieces sound very interesting, including things from Queen Mary and the Princess Royal. I think it's a good idea. The Gloucesters are probably going into retirement in the next reign. They've downsized their home and they will want to leave their children a bit of a nest egg as well. This collection will almost certainly bring in some serious money.
Title: Re: Duke and Duchess of Gloucester engagements, news and chat
Post by: TLLK on December 10, 2019, 09:13:13 PM
And as they've downsized, it's likely they just don't have the room for these items anymore.
I wouldn't be surprised if their children were offered an opportunity to select some sentimental items though from their late paternal grandparents' collection.

The Gloucesters moved into their new home in recent months after decades of living and raising their three children in the 21 room  Apartment 1 at Kensington Palace. Apartment 1 also underwent some repair, restoration and refurbishment work in the past year. The article has photos of the Duke and the Duchess at their respective desks speaking to their patronages. They're now in the Old Stables in the former home of courtier Tommy Lascelles.

Many elderly people downsize and I'm sure the Gloucesters will love living in the Old Stables. It will all be fantastic, I'm sure. Even their grandchildren are growing up now and accommodation may not be needed so much, except for major family events which are off the schedule at the moment anyway.

Apartment 1 was the Gloucester's old residence and it still remain vacant at this time. Here's a little history on this royal home in the larger Kensington Palace complex.

Kensington Palace?s 21-room apartment remains vacant a year after the Gloucesters moved out ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/gloucester/kensington-palaces-21-room-apartment-remains-vacant-a-year-after-the-gloucesters-moved-out-149622/)

QuoteApartment 1 at Kensington Palace remains vacant a year after the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester moved out of the 21-room residence.

The apartment, which is adjoined to the Cambridge family?s living quarters, was occupied by the Gloucesters from 1972 until September 2019.

With only Richard and Birgitte living there, the couple decided to downsize, and moved to the Old Stables ? a smaller residence still located within the Palace?s estate.

That KP apartment was pencilled in for the Sussexes. It was meant to emphasis the closeness of the Windsor boys and the 'Fab Four' thing. However Harry and Meghan did not want to live there. I wouldn't be surprised if it remains empty until the review of the Sussexes/RF next year though.

Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visit British Museum ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/duke-and-duchess-of-gloucester-visit-british-museum-151568/)

QuoteTuesday, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visited the British Museum to thank staff who contributed to the museum?s safe reopening and to hear how the museum was cared for during lockdown.

The museum reopened in late August to some pandemic-related changes. Visitors will need to book a free, timed ticket in advance as the museum is reducing visitors to encourage social distancing. There is also now an easy-to-follow one-way route signposted around the Ground floor galleries.

The museum was closed for 163 days, the longest peacetime closure in the museum?s 261-year history. The collection is said to have eight million objects, and it was stored in a complex building to bring its historic infrastructure back into service during the closure. Items include fragile and varied objects such as the Lewis Chess pieces or the Nimrud Ivories made of materials particularly vulnerable to changes in temperature and humidity.

Hartwig Fischer, Director of the British Museum, said at the time of the reopening, ?Visitors are our lifeblood, and we have missed them greatly. It will be wonderful to welcome them back and I do hope that local, London-wide, and UK audiences will take this opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the Museum, exploring some of the most popular galleries in what will be a much quieter environment. And we are looking forward to welcoming back our international visitors as well in due course.

The Duke of Gloucester highlights increased challenges in the fight against leprosy ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/gloucester/the-duke-of-gloucesters-heartfelt-words-on-world-leprosy-day-155311/)

QuoteTo mark World Leprosy Day, the Duke of Gloucester has highlighted the extra challenges faced by all those working to eradicate the disease as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The Duke, who is Vice President of Lepra UK, wrote to the organisation to mark the annual event which highlights the global fight against the condition. And his letter reflected on the increased pressures for those with leprosy and those working to help them.

Prince Richard said ?Over the last ten months, government lockdowns and the risk of COVID transmission has driven leprosy patient numbers down at clinics across India and
Bangladesh to below 50%. This means people affected by leprosy are remaining undiagnosed, continuing to transmit the infection and their disabilities are worsening. I?m very proud to say that Lepra has continued to provide services throughout this time, without postponing or reducing activities.?

He continued ?This has involved a lot of self-sacrifice and risk for those working in the field. Thank you to all the Lepra staff who have played a part in this, and displayed a commendable attitude throughout.?

The Duke of Gloucester highlighted the ways that the organisation had changed its work to best support those with the condition, including providing PPE for people battling leprosy and providing emergency food supplies for remote areas.
