The comments on Andrew and Harry, perhaps H should seek other kinds of work that may satisfy him, he has a Royal timeline when George, Charlotte and baby 3 and possibly a 4th come forward.

Times are changing fast and the mood towards the monarchy too. People seems to tolerate the Direct Heirs to the throne with their charity, representation in the CW, and ribbon cutting.

The quality rather than quantity seems to be creeping up. Serious work behind the scenes rather than stage set up of once a year show.

Despite Charles critics, people are starting to understand his realized endeavours Prince's trust, Highgrove, organic sustainability farming and what else.

The Queen looks lovely in yellow. So glad she's got over her cold. I think July is the time of the year when she attends various events in Scotland and stays overnight in her apartment at Holyrood House, before settling down towards the end of the month in a house on the Balmoral estate, waiting for the tourists to go so she can move into the castle. Holyrood is very atmospheric. I kept imagining it in the days of candlelight and all the terrible deeds that occurred there in former centuries when I visited.

I'm putting this here because it gives a charming glimpse into the private Queen when she's entertaining foreign leaders and their wives.

She and Michelle got on well. When Michelle was hesitating about where to sit in the Queen's Land Rover she said to her 'Did they give you rules about that? That's rubbish! Sit where you want!'
Confirms what I've always thought. Once you break through the Queen's shyness there is a kindly woman of dry wit underneath. And apparently she's tickled pink if anything goes wrong on engagements!

Considering the hundreds of patronages/presidencies that QEII and the DoE have gathered over the years, it has been impossible for the couple to visit all of them on an annual basis. Having her children, grandchildren and their spouses take them on would be best for the elderly monarch/consort and those organizations IMHO.

Wonder whether the Queen will leave Sandringham for London to consult with Theresa May and, if necessary, Jeremy Corbyn, in the light of the latest crisis?

Of course, Theresa ('I don't have a Plan B') May, having overseen the greatest defeat by a PM in Parliamentary history, will stay on for now, swinging in the breeze. No doubt she will go scuttling back to Brussels to try and negotiate from an extraordinarily weak position to no avail and the country is in crisis. It just looks like a mess everywhere I look, and the likelihood of a hard Brexit at the end of March is increasingly likely IMO. In fact it's almost inevitable, bar some sort of schesmic movement on behalf of May, Corbyn, the EU commissioners or the rest of Europe.

Theresa May is reaching a kind of delusional phase where even such a heavy defeat does not seem to faze her. She is determined to hang on...but for what. The EU will never let UK go free and why should they? There is 39 billion coming in annually. I think the French actually wanted Britain out because it was never an enthusiastic member of the club. Britain has refused to accept that it is no longer the empire that it once was. The EU is now the German empire and the truth is that it is very hard to survive completely outside the EU if you are a European nation. Better to have a second referendum (almost certain to result in a remain) and be done with it. Perhaps the EU can be reformed from within, but never outside. Just ask the Norwegians.

As for the queen, I think she is content most of the powers were taken away from her ancestors. Can you imagine  the scenario if a sovereign was defeated in parliament on that scale??? We would be looking at the fate of Charles I for starters. The queen will juts wait for the next PM to come to her and let them kiss her hand or curtsey as the case may be.
Title: Re: Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh - Duties / Engagements
Post by: Curryong on January 16, 2019, 11:04:40 AM
The Queen is of course there to advise, to consult and to warn with regard to her PM and on occasion her Ministers. If it looks like there is an intractable constitutional crisis looming and it is felt that she could help she will come to London from Sandringham. She's done it before when she's been on holiday. She doesn't just wait impassively for the next PM to arrive on the scene and has probably been on the blower to Theresa already.

May is very unlikely to lose the vote of no confidence in the Commons tonight, if only because self-preservation will kick in among the parliamentary party. No Conservative wants to trigger a general election down the road. She could ask for an extension of Britain's withdrawal after the end of March from the EU negotiators and they might grant it. However, with the government, Conservative Party and country hopelessly divided it's hard to see what extended negotiations could come up with that would be acceptable to all. And good luck on reaching a good compromise with regard to the Irish/Northern Irish border as well!

An overview of the options available to May from the Aussie Press. We watch from afar and wonder!

Her message comes as Parliament remains divided over Theresa May's Brexit deal, as the UK prepares to leave the EU in March.

I hope Theresa has consulted her Cabinet colleagues about the length of time she wants to extend this out to. A week, a month, a year? I'm being facetious, but really this is becoming farcical. She can't get anything she wants through Parliament as it is, and an extension beyond the end of June clashes with a new European Parliament being sworn in.

TM has been disastrous on this. I am now coming to the conclusion that a 2nd referendum is required but this time with clear options for what Brexit will be like if that is what the people choose. Perhaps they should do four options. Remain, WTO, Norway model, Canada+. The plurality wins the day. At this rate, they could be negotiating their way through 2022!!!

The Coronation of The Queen took place #OTD at @Wabbey in 2nd June 1953.
#DYK that Her Majesty is the 6th Queen to be crowned in @Wabbey in her own right
50 more facts about The Queen?s Coronation here: 50 facts about The Queen's Coronation | The Royal Family (http://bit.ly/2Xon4Ly)

I'm placing 15/50 facts.

Here are 50 little known facts about that remarkable day on 2 June 1953:
1. Westminster Abbey has been the setting for every Coronation since 1066. Before the Abbey was built, Coronations were carried out wherever was convenient, taking place in Bath, Oxford and Canterbury.
2. Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Her Majesty was the thirty-ninth Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.
3. Queen Elizabeth II is the sixth Queen to have been crowned in Westminster Abbey in her own right. The first was Queen Mary I, who was crowned on 1 October, 1553.
4. The Queen succeeded to the Throne on the 6 February, 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI. She was in Kenya at the time and became the first Sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad.
5. The Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary, aged 81 was the first Queen to see a grandchild ascend to the throne. However, she died before the Coronation took place.

6. The Coronation service used for Queen Elizabeth II descends directly from that of King Edgar at Bath in 973. The original 14th century order of service was written in Latin and was used until the Coronation of Elizabeth I.
7. The incumbent Earl Marshal is responsible for organising the Coronation. Since 1386 the position has been undertaken by The Duke of Norfolk. The 16th Duke of Norfolk was responsible for The Queen's Coronation in 1953 and he was also responsible for the State funeral of Sir Winston Churchill (1965) and the investiture of The Prince of Wales (1969).
8. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were driven from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach ? pulled by eight grey gelding horses: Cunningham, Tovey, Noah, Tedder, Eisenhower, Snow White, Tipperary and McCreery.
9. The Coronation Bouquet was made up of white flowers ? comprising of orchids and lilies-of-the-valley from England, stephanotis from Scotland, orchids from Wales, and carnations from Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
10. The Duke of Edinburgh wore full-dress Naval uniform for the journey to and from the Abbey. While in the Abbey, he wore a coronet and his Duke's robe over his uniform.

11. The Queen's Coronation dress, designed by British Fashion designer Norman Hartnell, was made of white satin and embroidered with the emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth in gold and silver thread.
12. Since the Coronation, The Queen has worn the Coronation dress six times including the Opening of Parliament in New Zealand and Australia in 1954.
13. Buckingham Palace housemaids, chefs and gardeners gathered inside the Grand Hall at Buckingham Palace to see The Queen leave for Westminster Abbey.
14. The Queen's Coronation service began at 11.15am and lasted almost three hours.
15. On her way to the Coronation, Her Majesty wore the George IV State Diadem - the crown depicted on stamps. Made in 1820, the Diadem features roses, shamrocks and thistles with 1,333 diamonds and 169 pearls.

QuoteThe Duke received General Sir Nicholas Carter at Sandringham as he relinquishes the role of Colonel Commandant of the Rifles Regiment.

The Duke of Edinburgh is Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles since 2006, taking over from his wife The Queen who was Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Green Jackets, as they were then known.

Prince Philip also received General Patrick Sanders at Sandringham on Friday. General Sanders will replace Sir Nicholas Carter as Colonel Commandant.

Sir Nicholas had held the role of Colonel Commandant since 2013 when he took over from Sir Nick Parker.

He has held various other high ranking military posts in his career, including Chief of the Defence Staff, a position he still holds.

General Sanders was promoted to full general earlier this year and was also appointed to the Joint Forces Command.

Meanwhile, while the Duke is conducting his first engagement as a 98-year-old, The Queen is enjoying some well-deserved time away from royal duties as she attends Royal Ascot.

^^ The heir to the heir isn't expected to attend State Openings of Parliament.

The Privy Council was all over in minutes apparently. The quorum of members were helicoptered in and out of Balmoral, for the proposal and consent. The Queen went back to her holiday. Very very different to earlier times!

Something rather sad is happening on Twitter apparently. Remainers and people who don't care for Boris are online expressing anti monarchy sentiments and stating that the Queen should have refused Boris consent to prorogue Parliament. Some are saying she should have consulted Corbyn before acting. References to Oliver Cromwell are being thrown around.

These people ignore the fact that the Queen is a constitutional monarch and as such is bound to follow the advice of her ministers. I suppose she could have argued the toss and said 'Hey, wait a minute. Isn't there another way around it, considering this is new territory? ' which I think Charles may have done if he had been King, but no point really.

And it's no good screaming about democracy as many protesters are now doing, when it was a decision made by the British public to leave the EU. If that wasn't democracy I don't know what is!  The only thing I would suggest that was wrong with it was that voting in the referendum wasn't made compulsory for all adult British citizens, as it was vitally important that everyone have a say.

No point in moaning about it afterwards I say if you couldn't be bothered to get off your behind and vote at the time. And all the consequences since have come from that.

That's my opinion anyway, but then I live in a country which has a compulsory voting system!

Actually a bit concerning when you realize that these are likely citizens who are ignorant of the role of the monarch as Head of State or who are choosing to pretend that they are not aware that QEII or any other monarch is bound by law/tradition to follow the advice of the PM and his/her requests.

Yes, TLLK. Or wilfully blind and just wanting to vent because things haven't gone their way. It's very easy to turn on a HOS who traditionally never answers back. I just hope the Press doesn't become nasty about HM as well, though I don't think they will. .

All this because, as I said, some just couldn't be bothered to do their civic duty. If you vote one way and the majority votes another is one thing. If you go shopping or to the cinema or watch TV rather than participating in something that will involve you, your family, your community etc for generations to come, it's quite another.

I can imagine, after years and years of it, that the Royal routine can feel utterly predictable and boring though, which is why so many senior royals are delighted when there are glitches. It makes things interesting.

Every January a look in the diary shows the Trooping, Ascot, Holyrood Week, the Festival of Remembrance, the Diplomatic Reception, Investitures, etc etc. At 93 the Queen is used to it, after 76 years it continues for her and will until her death or incapacity, at 96 Prince Philip was off as soon as his retirement was confirmed.

Not really a duty or engagement but it's the Queen and Prince Philip's 72nd wedding anniversary today. They are celebrating apart.  Apparently the Express has a story that the couple is virtually separated these days. Palmer says they've  apparently only seen each other twice since September and even when the Queen is there at Sandringham she is usually entertaining people in the big house, which Philip can't be bothered with any more. He just potters around doing his own thing at Wood Farm. I hope they at least had a phone call today!

Usually 2 weeks before Christmas, the Queen hosts at Windsor Castle her staff's Christmas party.  Every year she invites a working royal to accompany her, last year it was a first for the Sussex.  With the elections today, and if Boris wins, she will open parliament the 17th, I see (just like last year) the party for all her staff will be held the 16th?  And who do you think she will request the presence?

Just yesterday there was the annual articles about the gifts the Monarch will give this year to the staff (BP and Windsor).

The Queen to head to Windsor as major changes to royal life are announced ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/the-queen-to-head-to-windsor-as-major-changes-to-royal-life-are-announced-139203/)

QuoteBuckingham Palace has announced major changes to the royal diary for the coming months as coronavirus continues to spread across the UK. The Queen and her family have had to cancel garden parties and investitures while huge events, including Trooping the Colour, are now in doubt.

In a short statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the Royal Household said that ??In consultation with the Medical Household and Government, a number of public events with large numbers of people due to have been attended by the Queen, and other Members of the Royal Family, in the coming months will be cancelled or postponed?.

Among the events now off are the three Garden Parties held at Buckingham Palace every year. They were set to go ahead in May but are now cancelled. All those invited will be welcomed to the Palace in 2021. Special garden parties, for the Not Forgotten Association and the National Trust, are also off. Investitures are now on ice, too, and will be rescheduled once government advice on large gatherings changes.

The Queen will also head to Windsor earlier than planned. Her Majesty holds her Easter Court there every year but she will now arrive at the famous royal residence a week sooner than expected, settling there from March 19th. She will stay there beyond Easter with no date given for her return to London as yet. It?s likely that everyone over the age of 70 will be asked to self isolate from this weekend, possibly for up to 12 weeks, meaning her stay there could extend into the summer.

The Queen won?t be distributing Maundy Money this year ? the ancient ceremony usually takes place on Maundy Thursday but has been cancelled. The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York have just confirmed that all forms of public worship should be cancelled for the time being meaning it?s unlikely the Queen will attend church on Easter Sunday.  At the moment, audiences will continue with the Queen due to meet the Prime Minister as well as the Bishop of Hereford and the Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth in the coming days. However, the statement noted that these audiences will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Further statements on Trooping the Colour, the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the State Visit of the Emperor and Empress of Japan will be made in due course. However, Japanese media is reporting that the visit has been cancelled.

There?s also no word on the impact these changes will have on the wedding of Princess Beatrice of York. She is set to marry Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on May 29th at St. James? Palace with a reception afterwards at Buckingham Palace. The news that garden parties won?t be held at the Queen?s London residence has cast doubt on whether Beatrice?s celebrations will take the shape so far announced.

NCVO - About us (https://www.ncvo.org.uk/about-us/) Suggestions for those who want to safely volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

QuoteLook out for your neighbours

The simplest thing everyone can do right now is look out for their neighbours and offer help with shopping and other errands.

It's not just about neighbours who are self-isolating or vulnerable. Other people in the community who might also appreciate help are:

    stretched medical staff and volunteers
staff and volunteers in key worker roles
    supermarket workers
    delivery drivers.

Remember it?s a marathon not a sprint ? your help will be even more crucial in a few weeks' time. For now, the best thing to do is to check in on neighbours.

A good resource for those who would like to assist in their communities during this time.

Glad to hear that she is going to make this address. Of course HM would have collaborated with the British government to determine when would be the best time to air this address. IMO it was likely to be when the they monarch/government believed that it was that the timing was best which might be now as the UK appears to be heading into the toughest weeks.

Didn't know where to put this, but the continuing conflict over ex Governors General of Canada claiming huge expenses as a perk, sometimes more than a decade later, rumbles on.

https://nytimespost.com/queen-risks-being-undermined-in-canada-over-governor-generals-expenses-scandal/

As noted in this article there is a notable majority of Canadians who want an end to the monarchy (and that has been so for some time.) Again, IMO the chances of the realms becoming republics in the next reign is incredibly high.

Canada has pressing problems, the two above mentioned in the article may be 'fixed' for this coming decade, toppled with the corona economy; Gov General, once retired - finished like any employee in a company, that's quite easy to decree, the H&M is/was Justin Trudeau's problem - as mentioned too.  He also barely won by a point or two in the latest election.

I don't think they will drop from being in the ''commonwealth realm'',  44% today versus 2010 51% it started lowering 2011,  whatever the UK is doing, they lowered it and should lower it more and never allow freebie and long term visits from diplomatic personnel.

More on Prince Phillip's statement to essential workers.

The Duke of Edinburgh releases rare statement praising Britain?s bin men and postal workers ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/philip/the-duke-of-edinburgh-releases-rare-statement-praising-britains-bin-men-and-postal-workers-141012/)

QuoteThe Duke of Edinburgh has released a rare statement praising Britain?s key workers who are keeping the country running in the midst of the ongoing public health emergency.

In his message, 98-year-old Prince Philip thanked staff and volunteers, from those working in the medical profession to those collecting rubbish from the streets.

In full, the Duke said: ?As we approach World Immunisation Week, I wanted to recognise the vital and urgent work being done by so many to tackle the pandemic; by those in the medical and scientific professions, at universities and research institutions, all united in working to protect us from Covid-19.

?On behalf of those of us who remain safe and at home, I also wanted to thank all key workers who ensure the infrastructure of our life continues; the staff and volunteers working in food production and distribution, those keeping postal and delivery services going, and those ensuring the rubbish continues to be collected.?

The Duke of Edinburgh, who turns 99-years-old in June, remains at Windsor Castle with The Queen where they are isolating together.

Prince Philip is affiliated to over 750 organisations, including the scientific, technological research, healthcare and infrastructure sectors, which have responded to the outbreak.

I understand he is taking a scientific interest in the virus. That is a good thing, since he likes to be out of doors and I was thinking he would have a hard time at Windsor. I know she has always walked her dogs in the garden at Frogmore and would hope they can both get out for some fresh air.

This is the first time I read a CC with the formalism of adding the First Lord of the Treasury, which by the way is only a title, the 'real' treasurer is  Chancellor of the Exchequer.

But the history of the name, what before, what now is all historical and super interesting.

Technically all the Lords of the Treasury are equal. In practice the Chancellor of the Exchequer is the Second Lord. There are several Lords of this ancient Office. Years ago it used to be the convention that the prosecution in capital trials (when people could be hanged) were led by Treasury Lords who were barristers.

I know it's not the right thread but...

Britain, Australia and NZ are in the midst of negotiating a new Trade Deal which should be finalised by the end of the year.

Each needs new markets, or rather a renegotiation of old alliances.

China has become frightfully annoyed with Australia recently over Aus pointing out China's culpability with reference to the spread of Covid 19. It's issued threats about tariffs on our barley and wine etc, gone into massive sulks refusing our Trade Minister's calls, and issued warnings to Chinese students who wish to study in Australia about racism towards Asians here, something that apparently has never been a problem before now.

The British too are 'shedding the old skin', the EU, and reaching out for new markets and old friends. We may see something set up like the old days of Empire Free Trade/Preference.

Anyway, below is Boris, spruiking the delights of our (very good) Tim Tam choc biscuits.

It's always been, politics is a chessboard and the countries (planet) monopoly board.  If Aus/NZ tilt the balance in favor of China, communist. If they tilt the balance with the UK, constitutional monarchy.

Perhaps best to make a new thread in the board  ''The Politics of Monarchies & Republics'', I find this subject interesting. I know a few countries that have sold or partnered their state assets to China, others to Russia.

Well the Aus Govt is not kow towing to China at the moment in any way, so they can go sulk in the corner all they want. Their (China's) economy is in the doldrums like the rest of the world. When they need our steel, uranium etc, they'll come round. If they don't then they can do the other thing!

There's no way that Australia will move into China's political orbit. We are a Western nation in the South Pacific and bound by historic ties and treaties to the UK and bonds since WW2 (ANZUS etc) to the US. We share Intelligence information with both.

With the use of the word Spruik*, it's a bit deprecatory, and associating it with Boris Johnson, so I thought the political inclination is to go China.  My bad.

*Spruik definition in any website dictionary is quite contemptuous, scornful, cutting, and the example of the use of the word sexist towards men.
Title: Re: Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh - Duties / Engagements
Post by: Curryong on June 18, 2020, 01:05:47 PM
What ARE you talking about? Spruiking is slang used in Australia meaning to talk up a thing or product. As in the Tim Tam biscuits. It's not sexist or derogatory at all.

Not sure where this article on Royal finances, which is an interesting one, should go. If this thread is inappropriate, sorry.

'The Royal Family has more than doubled its income...but tensions remain'.

Royal Flush (https://members.tortoisemedia.com/2020/06/29/royal-money-sovereign-wealth-fund-queen-and-charles/content.html)

George Osborne  as Chancellor have led to the Queen?s annual taxpayer-funded grant rising from ?31 million in 2013 to ?86 million this year. Adding in ticket sales to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, the monarch?s official income in 2018-19 hit ?100 million for the first time;
The Queen?s public income has risen so much that the Prime Minister is now legally able to reduce the size of her annual grant. Boris Johnson has declined to do so;
Prince Charles is ?4.4 million a year richer than he was in 2009 thanks to soaring profits at his semi-private estate, the Duchy of Cornwall, which is exempt from corporation tax. He has nearly quadrupled what he spends on his two sons and their spouses, from ?1.7 million in 2009 to ?8.2 million last year;
Looking further ahead, the royals are only going to get wealthier: a future King Charles has the capacity to earn up to ?500 million from offshore wind-farms built on the Crown?s land. There is no evidence that a promise made by Clarence House to ?ring-fence? such earnings because of Charles?s personal interest in renewable energy has been acted upon.

100-year-old was today knighted in an unprecedented personal ceremony in Windsor Castle's quadrangle.

National hero Captain Sir Tom Moore has today been knighted by the Queen in an unprecedented personal ceremony in recognition of his outstanding ?33 million fundraising for the NHS.

The Second World War veteran's extraordinary year was capped when the Queen dubbed him a knight with her father's sword.

Staged in the open air, in the imposing setting of Windsor Castle's quadrangle, the ceremony saw the 100-year-old former Army officer joined by his family.

Lot's of pictures in the DM by @getty, which I'd think it's non other than Chris Jackson, who also photographed Camilla yesterday (and very likely the royal wedding today)

Regarding current UK COVID 19 restrictions: (Which are  more relaxed than in the Los Angeles Co. where I reside in California.)
QuoteSmall groups of those taking part in the royal visit were also arranged two metres apart for social distancing.

The choice by British royals not to wear face coverings comes in sharp contrast to the decision made by many of the European monarchs including Queen Letizia and King Felipe, and Queen Mathilde.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge have however been seen sporting floral face masks during recent outings.

Their decision falls in line with government guidance and new laws introduced at the start of the pandemic, which state people must wear masks indoors.

Queen Elizabeth shares about her vaccine experience.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-56203768

QuoteThe Queen has urged people to get a Covid vaccine when they are offered one, saying hers "didn't hurt at all".

The monarch, 94, and the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, received their first doses of the vaccine in January.

In a video call with health leaders delivering the Covid vaccine across the UK, the Queen was asked about her experience of having the jab.

She smiled as she replied: "Well, as far as I can make out it was quite harmless.

"It was very quick, and I've had lots of letters from people who've been very surprised by how easy it was to get the vaccine."

"It didn't hurt at all," the Queen said, adding that she has since felt "protected".

The monarch said she understood getting a jab could be a "difficult" experience for some people but urged everyone to "think about other people rather than themselves".

Returning to her official role so soon after her bereavement typifies the Queens deep sense of duty and service.

He looks quite young for the aging BP staff. So, I hope CH keeps him when the time comes.

Quote
Baron Parker served as director general of the MI5 from April 2013 until last year and was a career intelligence officer having joined the MI5 in 1983.

He hosted the Queen's first visit to MI5's headquarters in central London in February last year, when she praised the intelligence agency's officers for the 'tireless work you do to keep our country safe'.

During his MI5 career Baron Parker, born in 1962, led the intelligence agency's response to the July 7 London terrorist attacks in 2005.

The following year his teams played the lead role in the disruption of al Qaeda's attempt to attack multiple airliners with bombs hidden in drinks bottles.

He was later promoted to deputy director general of MI5 in 2007 before becoming head of the security service in 2013.

He retired from the post in April last year and in an interview that month said the pandemic could force ministers to 'adjust the dials' on public spending, potentially taking cash away from areas such as the intelligence agencies in the future.

This week we?re celebrating #NationalGardeningWeek, the country?s biggest annual celebration of gardening!

Spring has truly sprung in the Buckingham Palace Gardens and Mark Lane, the Head Gardener, has shown us some of his favourite plants and flowers Potted plant

Everything looks so lush.  At the far end to the right of the picture, greenery goes on and on. Lovely. The UK has so many (city) parks and natural (protected) environments, it's quite amazing.

The Queen, Patron, has shared memories of achieving her own @rlsscw Life Saving Award in 1941, during a call with the Royal Life Saving Society.

The @rlsscw works in 30 Commonwealth nations to combat preventable death by drowning, and deliver lifesaving education.

80 years ago, as Princess Elizabeth, The Queen became the first young person in the Commonwealth to achieve the @rlsscw Junior Respiration Award.

This helped to establish lifesaving and resuscitation qualifications across the network of nations.

The Queen will take a Conservative MP hostage tomorrow when she attends the #StateOpening.

Should anything happen to HM, hostage would meet the same fate.

Palace staff told a former hostage: ?If anything happened to HM, we would have made it quick, we would have just shot you.?

Marcus Jones will be the MP ?held captive? by The Queen tomorrow.

One former captive said: ??They didn?t lock me up, but they made it quite clear that I wasn?t going anywhere.?

Just one of the many strange traditions of the United Kingdom.

Not every day a 94 year old kidnaps a political figure.  :teehee:

The Queen looks rather shrunken and as if she?s lost weight. Sad to see, understandable however. She looked very nice in those colours and loved the hat. Her dress was the same one she wore when she and Prince Philip had their photo taken together months ago, before his last bout of illness.

It seems odd to see the royals sans crown, robes, uniform, gowns, and all the ritual. All of it will return I?m sure, but not until Covid is completely over, and with HM?s age that might encompass the end of her reign. The crown she wore for years during the Opening of Parliament was already proving too heavy for her and it was reported she found the steps into the Lords a trial.

Details of the traditions around the State Opening of Parliament below. They include the prior searching of the Parliamentary cellars (not the same building of course but dating back to James the I) and rituals, including the symbolic taking of a Govt MP hostage (coming from the tumultuous quarrels between Parliament and Charles I that led to the Civil War.)
