Prince Philip dead at 99: Queen announces with 'deep sorrow' that husband the Duke of Edinburgh 'passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle' this morning

Well, he didn?t make his century but wasn?t far short. At least he died at home at Windsor and not in hospital. His wife will certainly be bereft after nearly 74 years. And his family of course. He was the centre of their lives for so long.
I suppose the funeral under Covid restrictions will be small and may well be private which is what he always wanted it was said.

Blue Clover

@Curryong Yes, it is a comfort to know he died at Windsor Castle. Prince Philip has been at the center of the Royal Family, and Queen Elizabeth's life, since she was a child and since the beginning of her reign. I am happy to hear he wanted a small and private funeral, as you said with Covid a small funeral is all that is possible. Although we knew death was imminent, this news was still a shock this morning. May his soul rest in peace.

"The Duke of Edinburgh's death has fallen in the midst of unprecedented times as the nation remains gripped by the coronavirus pandemic. "

Her Majesty will not carry out any duties and laws will not be given Royal Assent.

Affairs of state will be paused for eight days following Prince Philips death.

30 days of Royal Mourning will follow before Queen returns to public duties.

Duke is expected to be buried in Frogmore Gardens, in Windsor Castle grounds.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson pays tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh - LBC

In a statement outside Downing Street, Boris Johnson said:

"It was with great sadness that a short time ago I received word from Buckingham Palace that His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away at the age of 99.

"Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world.

"He was the longest serving consort in history, one of the last surviving people in this country to have served in the second world war at Cape Matapan, where he was mentioned in despatches for bravery

"And in the invasion of Sicily, where he saved his ship by his quick thinking and from that conflict he took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the post war era.

"Like the expert carriage driver that he was he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.

"He was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable.

"With his Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme he shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people and at literally tens of thousands of events he fostered their hopes and encouraged their ambitions.

"We remember the Duke for all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen.

"Not just as her consort, by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her strength and stay of more than 70 years.

"And it is to Her Majesty, and her family, that our nation's thoughts must turn today.

"Because they have lost not just a much-loved and highly respected public figure, but a devoted husband and a proud and loving father, grandfather and, in recent years, great-grandfather.

"Speaking on their golden wedding anniversary, Her Majesty said that our country owed her husband a greater debt than he would ever claim or we shall ever know? and I am sure that estimate is correct.

"So we mourn today with Her Majesty The Queen we offer our condolences to her and to all her family and we give thanks, as a nation and a Kingdom, for the extraordinary life and work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

The College of Arms, responsible for state ceremonial, has issued guidance on what to expect for His Late Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh?s funeral arrangements.

Quote
His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

10 Jun 1921 - 9 April 2021

Funeral arrangements

The arrangements for the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will be announced by Buckingham Palace and will be available on the Royal website: The British Monarchy.

The funeral will not be a State Funeral and will not be preceded by a Lying-in-State. His Royal Highness?s body will lie at rest in Windsor Castle ahead of the funeral in St George?s Chapel. This is in line with custom and with His Royal Highness?s wishes.

The funeral arrangements have been revised in view of the prevailing circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and it is regretfully requested that members of the public do not attempt to attend or participate in any of the events that make up the funeral.

Flag-Flying Instructions

All official flags, including the Union Flag, will be flown at half-mast from now until 08:00 on the day following the funeral. Flags may be flown overnight during this period but should remain at half-mast. Official flags in this instance are defined as Union Flags, the national flags of the home nations, ensigns and ships? colours.

Any non-official flags flying or due to be flown should be taken down and replaced with a Union Flag flying at half-mast. Official flags scheduled to be flown should be flown as planned but at half-mast.

Flags will be flown at half-mast during this period, including on days which would otherwise be flag-flying days. The only exception is when The Queen is present within a building or its precincts, at which time the Royal Standard will be flown at full mast.

The flag flown should be clean and in a state of good repair. When flags are flown at half-mast they should first be raised to the top of the flagpole, and then lowered to a point two-thirds of the way up, with at least the height of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the flagpole. When lowering a flag, it should first be raised to the top and then lowered to the ground. Flagpoles which are more than 45 degrees from the vertical should fly no flag as half-masting is not possible.

The flying of flags on buildings of Her Majesty?s Government is determined by the Lord Chamberlain?s Office and administered by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), subject to the instructions of the Prime Minister, and the advice and guidance of Garter King of Arms.

This protocol will apply to Flag Stations (establishments listed in the Queen?s Regulations for the Army), naval and RAF establishments, at home and abroad; all British Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates; and on all buildings of Her Majesty?s Government, Parliament, agencies and devolved administrations throughout the United Kingdom.

Devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales will issue instructions for the flying of the Union Flag and others official flags on buildings in their estate and others as necessary. In Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Office will issue instructions for buildings covered by the Flags Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000.

The Governments of the Commonwealth Realms, British Overseas Territories and Dependencies will be following the same flag protocol as set out above.

The instructions above are not binding on local authorities, public institutions, or others. They will need to take their own decisions as to flag-flying; but the above protocol may be useful for guidance.

The flying of flags in general is subject to planning laws, which state that flags may not be flown without planning consent, unless they fall into certain categories. For details of these categories please see http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/resources/union-flag-faqs. It also comes under the general oversight and authority of the Earl Marshal, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; and Lord Lyon King of Arms, in Scotland.

The Titles of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style and title of Royal Highness on 19 November 1947; on the next day, 20 November, he was created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, of Greenwich in the County of London. These peerages are hereditary and on the death of His Royal Highness have passed to his eldest son, HRH The Prince of Wales. In the event of the Prince of Wales or any subsequent holder of these titles succeeding to the Crown, these titles and all others held will merge with the Crown.

His Royal Highness was made a Prince of the United Kingdom by Letters Patent of the present Queen dated 22 February 1957. A declaration of the same date communicated Her Majesty?s will and pleasure that her husband be known as His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness?s style and titles will be declared at his funeral by Garter Principal King of Arms, in accordance with custom.

It has been reported in the past that he has said he didn't want to make a fuss, and that they  pre-planned his funeral decades ago with his wishes in mind.  Fuss or not, he will be sorely missed. We can be assured that he would not mind having the services made even less of a fuss because of COVID.

TLLK

Indeed this is a very sad day but it is also one to reflect upon the most extraordinary life of the man born Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark in 1921. Honestly despite the fact that he'd been recently hospitalized for four weeks,  I truly believed that we'd see him on his 100th birthday. For most people in the UK, he's been a constant presence in their lives much like his wife, the Queen.

There is also the additional sorrow that another member of the Greatest Generation who like so many  men and women of his era saw active service in WWII has now passed away.

My condolences to HM the Queen and their family members.

Here is the front page of the official BRF website. The background is black with a photo of the DoE and his dates along with the official announcement of his death. The site states that it will be temporarily unavailable until the appropriate changes can be made.

The British Monarchy

I'm glad that the DoE's wishes for his funeral are being respected and that it will be a  service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle instead of a State Funeral. I do expect that might take some additional time to organize due to COVID 19.

As I recall, there's been speculation that Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex is to inherit the title "Duke of Edinburgh." However I just read on another site that this will happen after the death of both of his parents. AFAIK, the title of DoE should go to the PoW as the eldest son for now.

Here is the official obituary from the BBC.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-10224525

QuotePrince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, won widespread respect for his steadfast and constant support of the Queen.

It was a desperately difficult role for anyone, let alone a man who had been used to naval command and who held strong views on a wide range of subjects.

Yet it was that very strength of character that enabled him to discharge his responsibilities so effectively, and provide such wholehearted support to his wife in her role as Queen.

As male consort to a female sovereign, Prince Philip had no constitutional position. But no-one was closer to the monarchy, or of greater importance to the monarch, than he was.

Macrobug67

This is so sad.  He really was an extraordinary man.  He was the core of that family.  My heart goes out to the Queen, he was her bedrock.

Condolence message from TM the King and Queen of Spain. They refer to The Queen as "Tia" or Aunt" and to the DoE as "Tio or Uncle." (While QEII and the DoE are  not King Felipe's actual aunt/uncle but rather they're distant cousins, it is a testament to the affection they feel for them.)

QuoteDear Aunt Lilibet,

We have been deeply saddened by the news of the passing of our dear Uncle Philip.

In these painful moments, we want to convey our deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and the Spanish people, as well as all our closeness and support.

We will never forget the occasions we were able to share with him and the legacy of service and dedication to the Crown and the United Kingdom that he has always played by your side.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your majesty and with the entire family.

With all our love and affection, Felipe and Letizia."

"Querida t?a Lilibet,

Felipe y Letizia".

I expect many more messages to be arriving from other reigning  and non-reigning royals with  many of whom being distantly related to both QEII and the DoE.

Two of her fellow reigning or formerly reigning Queens have been widowed during their respective reigns. Former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was widowed in 2002 and Denmark's Queen Margrethe was widowed in 2018.

Message from Crown Princess Marie Chantal (Greece)

Here is the statement from POTUS Joseph Biden.

QuoteOn behalf of all the people of the United States, we send our deepest condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the entire Royal Family, and all the people of the United Kingdom on the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Over the course of his 99-year life, he saw our world change dramatically and repeatedly. From his service during World War II, to his 73 years alongside the Queen, and his entire life in the public eye ? Prince Philip gladly dedicated himself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth, and to his family.
The impact of his decades of devoted public service is evident in the worthy causes he lifted up as patron, in the environmental efforts he championed, in the members of the Armed Forces that he supported, in the young people he inspired, and so much more. His legacy will live on not only through his family, but in all the charitable endeavors he shaped.
Jill and I are keeping the Queen and to Prince Philip?s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in our hearts during this time.

I'd like to thank @sara8150 and @PrincessOfPeace along with all of our members who are keeping us updated with articles today.

I found this one from the DM to have a treasure trove of photos from the DoE's youth and young adulthood. Many of these photos I'd never seen before and include ones with his parents and his cousin the late King Michael of Romania.
