Well, the Scandi royals and the BRF were a lot more closely related then than they are now, so Bertie would have been a natural choice. The groom, Prince Olav, was the only child of Queen Maud of Norway, who was King George V?s youngest sister. Olav and the Duke of York (Bertie) would have seen a lot of each other as Olav was growing up as Maud couldn?t stand Norwegian winters and spent months on the Sandringham estate (which was largely where Bertie had grown up in York Cottage.) Olav?s father, Haakon VII, the King of Norway, was a Dane originally and a nephew to Queen Alexandra. (Alexandra was dead by 1929)but Maud and Carl of Denmark, as he was then, were first cousins. Daisy Connaught, the Duke of Connaught?s daughter, who died prematurely, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria but had also been wife to the heir to the Swedish throne, Gustavus Adolphus.
