Summer House.......... :eyes: :o........that is what is called a summer house.....good grief, how over the top some egos must of been during that time period. Yet during that time period in history there were lots of over the top buildings that we still have today.....in fact I do not think anyone in the entire world today could build any one of these palaces or castles like they did way back then. Our technology today just could not do it I honestly believe. Yet nothing today beat the Pyramids of Ancient Egypt for they are still standing after thousands of years.

The Palacio de la Magdalena (Magdalena Palace) is a palace located on the Magdalena Peninsula of the city of Santander, Spain. Construction of the palace began in 1908 for the purpose of providing a seasonal residence for the royal family of Spain.

The Magdalena Palace hasn't been used as a summer home by the Spanish royals for ninety years. Admittedly it was popular with them in King Alfonso's time, but that all ended with the Spanish republic in 1931. The Count of Barcelona (JC's father) sold the palace to the city of Santander in the 1970s. It had long been used as an international college for summer courses and as a conference hall, and it continues to be that today, as well as a tourist destination.

There is a tradition that Prince Arthur, The Prince of Wales, the older brother of King Henry VIII of England, frequently lived with Sir Henry Vernon at his house in Haddon Hall.

Arthur had his own household at a young age so I suppose he and his retinue often spent the summer and early autumn months visiting courtiers and family friends while the weather and the roads held up.
There are some very fine medieval and early Tudor houses still around in England and Haddon Hall is one of them.

It is still privately owned by the family. It seems unclear which owns it though (may be in a family trust).
It was home up until 2012 to the couple's grandson Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria-Tuscany (his father was the couple's fifth child and third son Theodor). The castle was inherited by Theodor on the death of his mother in 1924.
Valerie and her husband also owned two other properties.

Hummmmm that does not look very homey or comfortable to me.
Constant died in 1777, and designed rooms in the Palais-Royal in the mid 1750s, which probably weren?t built for comfort before elegance. He usually preferred the rococo style of design, but that illustration shows a simpler more restrained form so perhaps he was trying something different. Anyway, it was before the Revolution so I expect thousands of Franch peasants and sans-culottes wouldn?t have minded sleeping in a bed, any bed, that was comfortable and warm, compared to their own!
