Princess Thyra (1853-1933) was the daughter of King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark.
She was born at the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen. As a little girl, she was taught how to sew and knit her own clothes and socks.
On December 21/22, 1878 Thyra married Crown Prince Ernest Augustus of Hanover at the chapel of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

Thyra had a baby girl by a young Danish officer when she was very young. The baby was adopted after Thyra went off to Europe on a 'visit' to her brother King George of Greece and gave birth. The officer had an interview with the King of Denmark and afterwards killed himself.

Im quite surprised that THrya managed to make a royal marriage after the baby. I would have thought that the RFs of Europe would have found out about it and regarded her as damaged goods...

Yes it's quite interesting really. Almost as interesting as Queen Mary's aunt Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, having a granddaughter who was impregnated by a night watchman engaged to inspect and darken the oil lampss and fires in the Palace bedrooms! She had a baby who was looked after by members of the family and married a nobleman later as well, though in her case her husband was a rotter. Queen Victoria, May of York and the Duke of York were supporters of hers. George put forward the theory that she'd been hypnotised!

As for Thyra, there were plenty of rumours of this baby's existence. However she married in her twenties (she had her baby at seventeen) to Ernst Augustus of Hanover. He was odd looking and Hanover had been annexed by the Prussians. However, she told him herself about the baby and he said it didn't matter to him, it was all quiet and in the past etc. He was a good husband although he hated Thyra being away from her family (the Hanovers lived in exile mostly in Austria) and he didn't like her visiting her relatives in Denmark very much. Thyra and her sisters Alix and Marie (Empress of Russia) loathed the Prussians, as did Ernst Augustus. However EA and Thyra's only surviving son married the Kaiser's only daughter, Viktoria Louise, (a very happy marriage.)!

Hmm, goes to show eh?  a Middle class girl who had done something like that would be a social pariah at worst or probably end up a spinster at best....
The 2 girls were very lucky...

King Willem III of The Netherlands, who was widowed, became Thyra's first suitor. He was 36 years her senior.

Their father King Christian called Thyra 'my sweet daughter' because of her good nature, Dagmar, later the Tsarina Marie, his 'clever daughter' and Alexandra, later Queen Consort of GB etc his 'beautiful daughter'. Alix was certainly noted for her classic beauty.

Thyra was the favourite partner of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef at balls in Vienna. The Hanover Princely family were exiled after the Prussians punished Hanover for fighting against them in the 1866 Prussia-Austrian conflict, and they retreated to estates they had in Austria, though this changed somewhat when, shortly before WW1, Thyra's only surviving son Ernst August married the Kaiser's beloved only daughter Victoria Luise. Anyway, whenever Sissi wasn't present at Court Balls in Vienna and Thyra was, the Emperor would open the proceedings by dancing with her.

@Curryong-Have you ever seen the series "A Royal Family" from 2003? It chronicles the life of Denmark's Christian X and his famous offspring along with their descendants who married into the thrones of Greece, Russia, the UK etc..? It's one of my favorites as you could hear from so many of Europe's reigning and non-reigning royals. Prince Michael of Kent was the onscreen representative for the BRF , though I suspect that he'd always been given support from QEII to participate. Great stories about the famous family reunions in Denmark for Christian's children and their families.

A Royal Family (TV Mini-Series 2003? ) - IMDb -If you look at the "cast" you can see the various royals who participated.

Yes, TLLK, I have seen most episodes of A Royal Family, and enjoyed them very much. I think it's a fabulous series. Queen Daisy is a special delight, frank and witty. Her sons are great as well. It's often forgotten that Christian's children and grandchildren were spread widely in various royal Houses.
