Prince Philip: Why isn?t the Queen?s husband called 'King'? | Life | Life & Style | Express.co.uk

QuotePRINCE PHILIP is the husband of the Queen. The 96-year-old is well-loved by the public and has been a staple of the Royal Family for many years. But why is the Duke of Edinburgh not called king?

Prince Philip, 96, and the Queen, 91, have been married for more than 70 years now.

The couple are iconic, heading up one of Britain?s most important families.

However, some may have noticed something strange about the Prince?s title.

The Duke?s full title is Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and his last name is Mountbatten.

A King is a ruler of a country and giving Philip that title would trump the Queen Regnant, his wife, who is sovereign by descent. I would have thought that explanation would have been blindingly obvious!

I think that these articles pop up at least once a year.
Kind of ridiculous since people who are intrestested in royal things will know or if they are new to the whole thing they'll be able to find out on forums such as this

But Kate will be Queen Consort...so why not make Philip King Consort. There is no public or parliament walking on eggs that it may cause a crisis, no brainier, these two are extremely popular, no poll has ever placed them together or individually in dismal numbers.

Where is the gender equality, none existent in the UK, we have A Queen.

Monarchy is not "gender equal"...
and it Is a bit late to start offering Philip a King Consort position.

The article stated: Men who marry into the royal family cannot take the female version of their wife's name if she is of a higher rank to him.
Here is an example: In 1922 Princess Mary, The Princess Royal married Henry Lascelles. Viscount Lascelles did not become prince.

Im figuring its because if they had "equal" rank, by nature of the monarchy system, then the husband would outrank the wife in the same way that until recently a male prince would get the crown over a sister princess that was older than he.
"No other member of the Royal Family mattered that year, or I think for the next 17 years, it was just her." Arthur Edwards, The Sun Photographer, talking about Diana's impact.
