The royals who turned up at the gate of the former Nazi extermination camp were Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Philippe of Belgium, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Grand Duchess Stephanie of Luxembourg, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and her husband King Willem-Alexander who, as a symbol of respect, wore a blue Jewish skullcap called a yarmulke, which was laced with silver threads.

Especially Queen Máxima looked moved at the sombre ceremony where she joined fellow royals and the last remaining survivors of the camps in placing candles in remembrance at the Birkenau Memorial.
