This is a good move on the part of the government. Charles and Camilla get on very well with other European royals so it is a good idea to also work with other non-royal heads of state. It is also a good salvo to the heated debate that followed Brexit. I am sure they will all do very well.

I know that Charles has met with CP Margarita of Romania and her husband Prince Radu in the past and they're often invited to these types of official visits even though the country is a republic.

^ Yes, Charles has property in Romania and a real love of that part of the world, I believe. It's always looked such a lovely and very quaint country. King Michael was close to King George, the Queen Mother, and the Queen as he and she grew up I think. Of course the end of the war wrecked Michael's chances of a peaceful reign there after the communists took charge.

QuotePrince Charles touches down for #RoyalVisitRomania

HRH The Prince of Wales arrived in Romania on Wednesday, starting a nine-day tour of Europe which will also include visits to Italy, Austria and the Holy See. Prince Charles was greeted by a guard of honour as he departed the plane. He travelled to Romania in the prime ministerial jet, which was nicknamed 'Cam Force One' due to Former Prime Minister David Cameron's extensive use of the aircraft.

The Prince also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he met British troops currently stationed in Bucharest at the NATO Headquarters.

He also shook hands with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest.

^ Charles seems to just love Romania, especially the life lived by country people (peasants?) there. Very simple, horses used for ploughing etc. I think, in a way, places like rural Romania are his spiritual home.

QuotePrince Charles embraced by the Romanian public as he walks the streets of Bucharest

The Prince of Wales was embraced by Romanian children as he walked the streets of Bucharest on Friday.

Prince Charles, who is a frequent visitor to Romania, was being given a guided tour of the city – viewing restoration work on the old buildings.

On a walkabout, 11-year-old Valentin Blacker ran up to the heir to the throne and hugged him. This is not the first time the young boy has met Prince Charles, as he regularly visits Romania in a private capacity.

QuotePrince Charles joins Romania's Royal Family during #ROYALVISITROMANIA

On Thursday 30th March, The Prince of Wales met with members of Romania's Royal Family at the Elisabeta Palace. His Royal Highness has previously visited the Elisabeta Palace in 2011 and 2016.

Romania is now governed as a republic after the forced abdication of HM King Michael I of Romania in 1947. His Majesty told the New York Times about how the Communist Party forced him to sign his abdication, threatening to kill 1,000 students if he refused. The King was sent into exile but remained on good terms with Europe's ruling monarchies. He attended the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh and is friends with the British Royal Family. An opinion poll in January 2012 saw King Michael declared as the most trusted person in Romania, well ahead of any current political leaders. Although still kept from power, the 95 year old monarch lobbied for Romania to join NATO and helped the government by touring Europe. He can still draw huge crowds of admirers in Romania and this popularity has concerned republicans for decades. King Michael affirms that his removal from power was illegal, and that he is the rightful ruler of Romania.

The King has recently withdrawn from public life following the death of his wife Queen Anne and a cancer diagnosis. In March 2016, The King released a statement:

QuotePrince Charles walks amid ruins of quake-hit Amatrice in Italy

Prince Charles has visited an Italian town hit by a devastating quake last summer, walking amidst the ruins of ancient buildings and paying tributes to the victims.

The Prince of Wales was in Amatrice, in central Italy, as part of a European tour designed to shore up relations with EU allies post-Brexit.

Wearing a hard hat, he entered the abandoned "red zone" in the city centre, where collapsed houses lie next to the ruins of a 13th century Civic Tower, and walked alone in silent contemplation.

I think Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall's trip to Italy and Romania was successful and productive. I like how well they connected with the people they encountered. Prince Charles visited children in hospitals and met with survivors of the earthquake. The Duchess of Cornwall also met the family members of the victims of the mafia. They both attended centenary of the British Institute in Florence. The trip was great for improving the diplomatic relations between the UK and other EU nations.

QuoteDuchess of Cornwall meets family members of mafia victims

On Saturday, the second day in Italy of the Brexit charm offensive, the Duchess of Cornwall spent a day in a villa on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples where she met family members of victims of the mafia. The villa was once owned by mafia boss, Michele Zaza. Zaza died in custody at the age of 49 in 1994 for double murder and several other mafia-related crimes.

La Gloriette, his villa, was seized by the state and is now used by several charities that assist victims of domestic violence and those with mental illness. The Duchess met with family members of the 360 innocent men whose sons and husbands were murdered over the last 30 years by the Camorra – the name of the mafia based in the Naples region. Thousands have been involved and affected by organised crime. Her Royal Highness told them: "You are all very strong. You are all very brave women."

One woman told Camilla of how her husband was murdered eight years ago while he was working as a security guard. Another woman spoke of how her 26-year-old son was murdered when he was mistaken for someone else by the Camorra.

QuoteCamilla's dream of saving childhood villa: Duchess reveals she hopes to buy back Italian property after she played there when she was a child

The paint is now peeling from the walls and the iron gates are rusting.

But the glory of the honey-stoned Italian villa where the Duchess of Cornwall once played as a child still shines through – and she hopes to eventually buy it back for her own grandchildren.

Speaking to the Daily Mail in Florence yesterday, on the second day of an official tour of Italy, Camilla revealed that she had always rued the day her mother sold the beautiful family villa, first bought by her great-grandmother Alice Keppel, mistress of King Edward VII.

It was a royal flush – with an Italian twist.

Prince Charles sat down to a card game in a social centre in the heart of Florence on Monday, as he and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, continued their European tour.

QuotePrince Charles is following the Queen's example by strengthening ties with the Vatican

Whhen Prince Charles meets Pope Francis at the Vatican on Tuesday it is likely that there will be plenty of discussion about issues dear to them. One of those is climate change – Pope Francis's encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si', was emphatic that climate change is real and he has accused sinful mankind of turning the planet into a "polluted wasteland full of debris, desolation and filth", while the Prince in his foreward to a book on climate change he co-authored has called it the "wolf at the door" and urged that action must be "urgently scaled up, and scaled up now".

The two also share a similar sense of urgency about the persecution of Christians, particularly in the Middle East, and both have spoken out about the disaster befalling the part of the world where Christianity was founded. The Prince of Wales has become a keen supporter of Aid to the Church in Need, making generous donations to support its work, hosting refugees at his homes in Scotland and London, and speaking frequently about the plight of people uprooted from their homes in Iraq and Syria in particular. Both he and the Pope have publicly regretted that the persecution of Christians is not dominating public discourse: in January the Pope complained that the media doesn't speak about the persecuted because they are not newsworthy, while a few weeks later the Prince told guests at a Lambeth Palace reception that people cared more about Brexit than the plight of those fleeing ISIS in the Middle East.

That the two men are meeting is more than happy coincidence or a moment for theological dialogue. It is about diplomacy, and the Royal Family is one of the Foreign Office's key assets when it comes to engagement with other states, including the Holy See. While at home the royals are expected to be neutral and mostly engage in charitable endeavours, abroad they are regularly deployed to represent the interests of the government of the day. And this has involved regular encounters between the Holy See and the Queen, far more than any other royal head of state.

According to one of the press pack this tour has generated great interest with Italian police having trouble containing the crowds.

This is very good to see and Charles and Camilla seem to be absolutely revelling in it at the top of their form. Charles has loved Italy from his youth. I think the architecture, culture weather, crowds have all combined to make this tour immensely pleasurable for him and his wife.

Sadly, I don't know how much of this genuine enthusiasm of Italians to see them both is getting into the tabloid media back home. The DM for example has just produced some searing excerpts from author Sally Bedell Smith's latest biography of Charles which do not reflect well on his character (discussed here on another thread) and that has swallowed up much of the coverage in that rag, as has Kate's visit to a musical last night. Any excursions by the younger royals often seems to swallow up Charles's endeavours.

Cambridges and Prince Harry do tend to keep their activities low key when QEII/DoE and PoW/DoC are overseas on state or official visits.

^ Yes they do. I was referring more to the tabloid press and their emphasis (illustrated with many photos in the case of the DM)  on what the younger royals are doing, whether low key or key note, rather than the activities of Princess Anne or Prince Charles. This seems to occur whether Charles is in Britain or away.

I really hope Charles resists the temptation to have his agenda driven by the tabloids (i.e. suppressing the activities of younger royals because they are getting all the tabloid coverage or some two-bit journalist is once again suggesting we skip a generation). The media did help to destroy his first marriage by sowing/exaggerating discord between the estranged couple and caused lots of tension in the royal family during the 1980s-1990s. He should be proud and fully expect that younger people will attract more interest than pensioners. That is the nature of things and does not reflect badly on him. Just ignore the tabloids and do what is right. The media is trash and Donald Trump has shown us that the best way  is to either ignore it completely or aggressively attack it.

Ok now I understand. However it does seem that their schedule is cleared though when he's away or when there is an important state event ie: incoming Irish State visit that occurred during the Australian/New Zealand tour and a "rest" day was scheduled for the first day of the state visit. To have the Republic of Ireland participating in its first ever state visit to the UK was a historic occasion that needed to be the focus rather than the Cambridges' tour for that day.

It is a tricky balancing act. The tabloids know which type of articles sell or earn clicks so they'll tend to push those to the front. Perfect example is how the tabloids have been cherry picking details from the soon to be released Bedell-Smith biography.

What I meant to point out in previous posts is --with regard to tabloid and TV coverage of royals, and of Charles and Camilla in particular, I feel, and I do think that this is borne out in the number of photos, that with the exception of the Queen, the focus is on the younger senior royals (not so young any more, but anyway...)

This is because TV and tabloids like the DM concentrate on the visual image and they know that the public in general would rather look at vigorous and reasonably attractive people in their thirties than  people who are twice as old.

This focus means that Kate (whatever her personal skills and attributes, which in my view aren't great), gets more attention than her male counterparts, simply because a woman in a pretty dress/gown, coat, shoes, hat, etc gets more attention than a man in a suit, even a young man. Similarly, a young(ish) woman in a pretty outfit gets more attention than an old one.

(The Queen out on Royal duties is an exception to this, as I do think she's regarded more as an iconic, unchanging  figure and as HOS her work is considered more important. Even so, her outfits are mentioned almost every time.)

It has been said that Charles gets frustrated that his particular charities and causes get starved of oxygen while the younger royals' excursions enjoy far greater publicity. (Ironic that first Charles has been stifled in that way by a beautiful, much loved  first wife and then by his grown sons and to a greater extent his daughter in law.)

The above is true, I think of much of Camilla's coverage too, except perhaps when she is visiting places like dogs homes or entertaining children at Christmas at Clarence House. There is a certain amount of media coverage when this couple go overseas but nothing like the attention given, when for instance, the Cambridges visited Canada or the Pacific.

That's why I thought it made a refreshing change when the crowds have come out in Romania and Italy for this couple. Large enthusiastic crowds and their responses to them make for greater all-over coverage in the media at home.

Yes @Curryong. We still live in the age of clickbait journalism. Worthy causes are not as important as the cost of Kate's dress. I think Kate is a very sensible and controlled woman so she will probably not be taken in by the tabloid interest. It tends to end up with them pulling you down once you have been placed on the pedestal. Most sensible people just ignore the trash media and do the best they can.

A suitable ending in magnificent surroundings to a very successful tour as far as attracting enthusiastic crowds are concerned. What it actually achieved is another case entirely, I suppose, but that's the case with all Royal visits to foreign countries, I think. However, I have to say that I find Camilla's gown for the state banquet a bit bizarre. Valance-like frills down to the floor under a shapeless satin top?? Surely something more flattering could have been chosen?

@sandy. Women in public life make fashion faux pas. It is not the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination. Camilla generally dresses well for her age. My understanding is that she prefers comfortable clothing but her stylists prefers her to look good for the cameras. I suspect they have a compromise where some days Camilla dresses as she likes and at other times defers to the stylist. She is not the first or last woman to do this. Some of the most beautiful clothes out there are impossible to wear.

@sandy. There is a hardcore of anti Camilla DM commentators (they do have aliases) but their syntax and repetitive comments give them away.  They do give an impression of an open season on the woman when the reality is very different. Most normal people will occasionally express approval or disappointment of a person in public life. Not make it their life mission to attack a person they do not know, will never know and probably cares very little about their opinion.

As to the instruction: "enough of the outrageous comments". I am just borrowing a leaf from the anti-Camilla obsessives. They just can't let go. She is bad, bad, bad, bad. Everything she touches is bad, bad, bad, bad. After a few rounds, it gets a bit boring.

Anyway this sounds like de ja vu. I am not getting into yet another anti Camilla tit for tat that ends up with moderators being summoned. Camilla dresses well (most times), is doing her job well and supports her husband well. The trip was a success by any measure. The rest is noise.

QuotePrince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall meet the Pope

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Vatican as they neared the end of their nine-day European tour. Their visit included an audience with Pope Francis, as well as a visit to the Vatican archives where they were able to inspect documents written by and relating to Prince Charles' ancestors amongst others. The couple exchanged gifts with the Pontiff, giving him a hamper of produce from the Highgrove Estates; amongst the gifts given in return were copies of his writings on climate change bound in red leather.

Climate change is clearly one area that Prince Charles and the Pontiff are in accord on. The audience, which was held in a study within the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall building and lasted between 20 and 30 minutes. The meeting was extremely cordial and perhaps more relaxed, it is not the first time the Royal couple have met a Pope – they also met Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The Pope is currently Head of the Roman Catholic Church and the Prince heir to Head of the Commonwealth. It perhaps fits then, that the Pope should encourage Prince Charles by saying "Wherever you go, may you be a man of peace" to which Prince Charles replied, "I will certainly try".

The relationship between the Papacy and the English throne has not always been so amicable, and Prince Charles and Camilla saw historical examples of this when they visited the Vatican's Secret Archives earlier in the day. The rare manuscripts, not open to the public, are kept in Sala Sistina of the Vatican Library. On arrival at the archives, they were met by Archbishop Jean-Louis Bruguès, Segretario Generale, Archivist of the Vatican Secret Archives and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church.

QuoteCharles and Camilla begin #RoyalVisitAustria

On Wednesday, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall started the last leg of their nine-day European royal tour; they left Rome for Vienna, Austria's capital. This royal tour has been considered a charm offensive pre-Brexit. In Vienna, the red carpet was rolled out for them as dignitaries, a guard of honour consisting of soldiers from the Primo Rataglione Granatieri di Sardegna, played a fanfare greeted their arrival at the International Airport

In the Holy See, they met His Holiness Pope Francis and then President Sergio Mattarella at the presidential palace. Before Rome, they spent time in Florence. You can read about the Duchess' visit to a former mafia boss' villa last weekend.

After landing in Austria, the royals paid a visit to the famous pastry and chocolaterie Cafe Demel. They observed a cake-making display and the Duchess watched a wedding cake being made. Later during their visit, they will tour the Wiener Musikverein and sit in on a rehearsal by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. They will also view original manuscripts by composers including Mozart and Brahms.

QuoteCharles and Camilla conclude European tour in Austria

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall concluded their European tour with a visit to Austria, and in a series of visits both individually and as a pair, Prince Charles let slip at least one area where Camilla is better than him at doing something!

Their day started at the Jewish Museum, where the couple met Holocaust survivors and listened to their stories of camps, their families and rebuilding their lives after the war. In turn, Prince Charles told of his paternal grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg. She married Prince Andrew of Greece, and Prince Philip was their son. She was also the sister of Earl Mountbatten, Prince Charles' favourite uncle. During World War II, she stayed in Athens and sheltered Jewish refugees. Though deaf, she could lip-read both English and German, thanks to this work she is recognised as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Israel's Holocaust memorial institution, Yad Vashem.

Following their visit there, the Royal couple dropped in on a rehearsal of the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein. Earlier this year, Gustavo Dudamel became the youngest conductor to conduct the famous New Year's Day concert. They then continued to a nearby family vineyard, where Prince Charles confessed to not being able to grasp what wine connoisseurs meant when they talked about various elements of a wine's taste. However, according to the Prince, the Duchess is well versed in the lingua vinum – a "great red wine enthusiast!"

QuoteDuchess of Cornwall enjoys an equestrian performance at a riding school in Vienna

On the last day of the nine-day royal tour of Europe, the Duchess of Cornwall spent some time at a prestigious Spanish riding school, the Winter Riding School in central Vienna. She was shown around the school and stables by its director, Elisabeth Gurtler. Camilla has long been a fan of equestrian sports. After her tour, she was treated to a special performance done in her honour.

The performance was done in the classic 'equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole,' according to the Daily Express. Winter Riding School is listed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

After the performance, Her Royal Highness, with sugar lumps in hand, greeted and fed the horses. Of the entertainment, she told the Daily Express: "It was wonderful."
