Busy start to the New Year for King Felipe as he attends President Lula?s inauguration in Brazil ? Royal Central

Quoteing Felipe wasted no time in resuming royal duties following the festive period with a quick visit to Brazil to attend the inauguration of President Lula da Silva.

The King, accompanied by his Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, was met by Brazilian officials at the Brasilia Air Base when his airplane landed, and travelled to the Spanish Embassy to meet with workers there.

Following his meeting at the Spanish Embassy, King Felipe joined President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal for lunch before departing for the National Congress for the official ceremony to mark the transmission of power from out-going President Bolsonaro to President da Silva.

President da Silva won the Brazilian presidential elections last fall, narrowly beating out controversial Jair Bolsonaro.

According to Brazilian tradition, the new government takes control of the country on 1 January following an election after a four-year term.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence for Brazilian football legend Pel?, who passed away on 29 December from complications due to colon cancer; and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who passed away on 31 December.

After the ceremony, King Felipe joined the delegates for a reception at Planalto Palace and met with President Umaro Sissoco of Guinea-Bissau.

King Felipe?s quick trip to Brazil wrapped up on 2 January after a meeting with President da Silva. This is his first official visit to Brazil since he became king in 2014.

King Felipe has previously attended this ceremony in the past in his role as Prince of Asturias, starting in 1996, and was present at President da Silva?s first inauguration ceremony in 2003.

TM the King and Queen hosted the annual Diplomatic Reception on January 25 at the Royal Palace in Madrid. An interesting dress code for the daytime event with the King and diplomats in morning suit and the Queen and the ladies in floor length dresses or skirts. These  daytime events do occur now and then for high profile gatherings though typically longer hemlines are seen at evening receptions.

QuoteThe reception is held traditionally each year for the New Year and the royal couple greets diplomats and ambassadors in the Throne?s Room. King Felipe also made his traditional speech.

Yes it is an interesting mix of clothing. The dusty pink skirt quite nice and is saved from looking too formal for daytime I suppose, by having a blouse on top though I?m not sure about the bow.

Macrobug67

Pretty colour.  Not so sure about the bow, either.  Or the shoes.  Really don?t like the shoes with that outfit.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia make history with visit to Angola ? Royal Central

QuoteThe programme continued with a visit to the Economic Bank, which will host the presentation of Cuanz International University and where the King and Queen inaugurated a Joan Miro exhibition. The last engagement of the day was a reception for the Spanish community in Angola, which numbers at around 500 individuals.

On Wednesday, the day will start on separate agendas; King Felipe and President Louren?o will open the Spanish-Angolan business meeting ?Together building the future,? which will put together Spanish businesses that operate in the area, mainly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

At the same time, Queen Letizia and First Lady Dias will visit Lucrecia Pa?m Maternity, where one of the biggest neonatal programmes in the country is carried out.

The royals will then be reunited in the country?s Parliament, where they will meet Parliament President Carolina Cerqueira. The official goodbye ceremony at the Presidential Palace will mark the end of the state visit.

This is the first state visit to Angola by a Spanish monarch since the country gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, and it is a reciprocation of the official visit that President Louren?o and First Lady Dias made to Spain in September 2021. The aim of the trip is to ?highlight and strengthen the ties and the bilateral relations among the two countries,? according to the Spanish Royal Household.
