I don?t think that Prince Philip was that attached to the Greek Orthodox Faith really, except for purely theological interest. I know Philip, was baptised into the Greek Orthodox religion and converted to the Church shortly before his marriage but growing up he attended Lutheran and Anglican Church services, depending on which side of the family he was staying with at the time.. I can?t imagine that at Salem and at Gordonstoun in the Thirties school authorities were searching around for a local Greek Orthodox priest to minister to him. Perhaps if Prince Andrea had lived and there had been close father/son contact to the end it might have been different, as Andrea was very much attached to everything connected to his homeland.

Attendants are very much regarded as ?family? in the RF (witness the friendship between the Queen and Angels Kelly her dresser. She was very very close to ?Bono? who was her dresser and had been with her since childhood.) Old nannies are and have been invited to family events. ?Back Stairs Billy the Page was a well known attendee at the QM?s funeral.

That sort of relationship is quite common in the BRF and has been since the days of Queen Vic and John Brown. IMO that would be doubly so for someone like a valet with years of service to the end, who no doubt helped and assisted in making Prince Philip comfortable over the last few years.

I would expect that there might be at least one Mountbatten family member present ie: Lady Pamela Hicks or her nephew the current Earl of Burma.

Also I agree @Curryong that neither Meghan nor Archie will be traveling to the UK for the funeral. Travel for a very pregnant mother and an under two on a trans Atlantic flight is not easy under normal circumstances and with COVID restrictions, it would be dreadful for all involved IMHO.

Lady Pamela is turning 92. With covid she may not be willing to take the risk to come for the funeral.

Philip was godfather though to Pamela's son Ashley Hicks. As well as to Norton, the current Earl of Burma. Perhaps we would see one or both. I know Norton is close to Charles (Charles gave Norton's daughter away at her wedding).

I know Norton was ill when his daughter wed. I don't know if he is better (not sure what was wrong). His daughter Alexandra could be another option. She actually named Philip godfather to her son Inigo.

@Curryong I agree their long time staff are seen often as family. Angela Kelly indeed. But this is not a normal funeral. There were hundreds of people at the funeral of the Queen Mother. So yes they included people like pages. Unfortunately with a funeral only allowing 30 people, and his children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren already bringing that number to 26, its highly unlikely they will over look his actual family members, for his vallet.

Curryong

Norton Knatchbull was not just ill at the time of his daughter?s wedding. He was only just back in the fold after leaving his wife to look after the family estates, while he left to live in 2010 with a glamorous girlfriend in the Bahamas. That lasted for several years.

Penelope managed the estates very well (assisted by Alexandra) and when Norton came trailing back a year or two before the wedding at which Prince Charles gave Alexandra away, he was consigned for a while to a converted stable block as living quarters, but has his own quarters now in the house. He?s been ailing for years. They are a bit of a troubled family. The Countess took a very long time  to get over the death of a young daughter from kidney disease and the only son Nicholas was drug addicted for many years.

QuoteMod note:  Very interesting topic (I had no idea) but it should be in its own thread.  Let?s return to Prince Philips passing.  Thanks :flower3:

*snip*

The media are apparently parked around Harry and Meghan?s home in Montecito, waiting to see whether and when Harry will leave. Exactly what?s needed at this time.

I believe the whole RF knew that Prince Philip was very ill over the next few weeks, and given his age it was touch and go as to whether he?d be celebrating his 100th birthday. If that was so then probably travel and quarantine arrangements have already been made for Harry just in case, and he might well have already left his home before the crows gathered outside.

Ah man, that?s so unfair.  No matter what is going on between Harry and his family, he just lost his grandfather.  The media can be so obnoxious

^I love the fact the Louise and PP had a hobby in common.  Something that she can enjoy and remember special times with grandpa.

I always loved they shared the hobby. He was so proud watching her competing in carriage driving.

I am sure he is smiling down on her. He never was one for muss and fuss. Likely the kind of mourning he would be happy for. Memories of him while out doing a hobby they both loved.

'The Queen has been amazing', says Countess of Wessex as she and Prince Edward leave Windsor Castle - YouTube

The Wessexes seen leaving Windsor Castle this morning. Sophie reportedly gave a short reply to a question and said that "The Queen was amazing."

The Queen and the BRF are entering into a period of mourning and therefore official engagements are being cancelled or rescheduled. As @wannable mentioned in the Cambridge engagements thread, Prince William was to deliver a speech at the 2021 virtual BAFTA awards but has now withdrawn.

@tiaras -Happy to see you posting again even though it is a sad occasion.

An lovely salute from London's famous black taxi car drivers who lined up outside of Buckingham Palace. Prince Phillip frequently drove incognito around London in his own cab.
QuoteDozens of London black cabs lined The Mall just hours after the Duke of Edinburgh's death was announced by Buckingham Palace - in a poignant tribute to the royal who drove a taxi around the capital for fun.

Prince Philip passed away peacefully yesterday morning at Windsor Castle launching eight days national mourning.

Shortly after the 99-year-old's death was announced, the drivers assembled in two columns along the thoroughfare which links Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.

The Duke famously shunned a limousine and used to drive a black cab to travel incognito around London. He took delivery of the gas-powered taxi in the 1990s and used to ferry himself and others in the royal household to engagements around the capital, allowing him to travel around the city unnoticed.

Thank you for sharing. I really like that Prince Phillip is going to be lying in the private chapel at Windsor Castle. I know that it was damaged during the 1992 fire and that Phillip had a hand in redesigning it when it was rebuilt. I'm pleased to see that PM Johnson is turning down his invitation so that more family and friends can attend.
