Princess Anne Pays a Visit to Bristol

QuoteSTUDENTS at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple Secondary thronged in the central "street" of their spectacular new school building at the climax of a visit from the Princess Royal.

The princess had been shown around the revamped school before formally opening it by unveiling a plaque. It was her third visit to St Mary Redcliffe and Temple: she opened the Temple Colston Building in 1988 and the sixth form block in 2005.

But, as head teacher Elisabeth Gilpin pointed out, the school's connection with royalty goes back somewhat further. It was in 1571 that Queen Elizabeth I gave permission for a school attached to St Mary Redcliffe Church.

The Princess Royal said the current school site had undergone a remarkable transformation and she praised the builders, school staff and students for the way they had coped while work went on.
