During part of his reign, Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra of Russia stayed at Peterhof.
Alexandra composed the menus the previous evening. Nicholas often ordered, as a hors-d'oeuvre for himself, suckling-pig with horseradish.

Nicholas II had very bad teeth, as did quite a few of the Romanovs. When he and Alexandra visited Victoria at Balmoral with their first baby Olga Nicholas was suffering from toothache. His teeth had rotted as a youth due to the family predilection for desserts and candies loaded up with sugar. His uncle Grand Duke Michael was even worse. A visitor to Cannes recollected seeing him roaring with laughter and the one tooth left on his front upper jaw wobbling as he did so!
