Coffee first arrived in Sweden around 1674. It was little used until the turn of the 18th century when it became fashionable among the wealthy. In 1746, a royal edict was issued against coffee because of the misuse and excess of coffee drinking.
King Gustav III (reigned 1746-1792) viewed coffee consumption as a threat to the public health.
