The Queen formally opens the new session of Parliament each year, usually in October or November. She is usually accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and she travels in the State Coach to the Palace of Westminster.

The Queen wears the Imperial State Crown and parliamentary robe for the ceremony itself, which takes place in the House of Lords.

Seated on the throne, The Queen reads The Queen's Speech. The Queen's Speech to the members of both Houses of Parliament is written by the Government of the day, and outlines the legislation which the Government plans to introduce into Parliament in the coming session.

Traditionally, the Sovereign opens Parliament in person. The Queen has opened Parliament every year of her reign except 1959 and 1963.
